i saw a video on tik tik talking about f2 and how driver academies are making the championship null and void. which, sure this year you may think that because of Ollie and Kimi promoted, despite not overly excelling in the championship this year, and with Franco being Logan's replacement, but I have done the research, and am here to call this bollocks. this is gonna be a long one folks :)
we start in the good old year of 2016, when the series was still gp2, where we have 2015 champion Stoffel Vandoorne completing one race with mclaren before being promoted for a full season for 2017. Alongside him is 2014 champion Jolyon Palmer who completed a season with renault. Pascal Wehrlein, 2015 DTM champion, and Esteban Ocon, gp3 champion, were promoted to mrt, Esteban only racing after the summer break.
in 2017, Pierre Gasly, 2016 gp2 champion gets to finish the season with Toro Rosso, and 2nd in the championship, Antonio Giovinazzi raced twice for sauber. Lance Stroll, 5th in the f3 european series, was promoted to Williams, and Brendon Hartley, who won formula renault in 2015, also finished the season with toro rosso.
in 2018, 2017 f2 champion Charles Leclerc is promoted to sauber.
in 2019, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the 2018 f2 championship are all promoted to f1, George Russell to williams, Lando Norris to mclaren, and Alex Albon to toro rosso, and then red bull.
in 2020, 2nd place in the 2019 f2 championship, Nicholas Latifi is promoted to williams, while 1st place Nyck De Vries is promoted to formula e.
in 2021, 2020 f2 champion Mick Schumacher is promoted to haas, alongside 3rd place Yuki Tsunoda who is promoted to alpha tauri, and 5th place Nikita Mazepin who is also promoted to haas. 2nd place Callum Ilott was in talks with sauber but was never promoted, and instead raced in wec and indycar.
in 2022, 3rd place in the 2021 f2 championship Zhou Guanyu was promoted to sauber. 1st place Oscar Piastri was the reserve driver for Alpine, and 2nd place Robert Shwartzman has since done test work for ferrari and recently one his first race in wec.
in 2023, 2021 f2 champion Oscar Piastri was promoted to mclaren, alongside 2019 f2 champion Nyck De Vries being promoted to alpha tauri. 4th place in the 2022 f2 championship Logan Sargeant was promoted to williams, and 3rd place Liam Lawson was promoted to alpha tauri after Nyck was fired, and Daniel broke his wrist. 2022 f2 champion Felipe Drugovich became a reserve driver for aston martin, and 2nd place Théo Pourchaire continued in f2 for a second season.
in 2024 nobody was promoted to f1 at the beginning of the season, but current 7th place in the 2024 f2 championship Franco Colapinto was promoted to williams after they fired Logan. 2023 f2 champion Théo Pourchaire competed in the superformula championship, and got to do a couple of races for mclaren in indycar. 2nd place Frederick Vesti has been a test and reserve driver for mercedes.
basically every driver who has finished in the top two in f2 since 2015 was associated with a driver academy. the only two who weren't were Alex Rossi, did five races with marussia in 2015, and has since had a successful indycar career, and Artem Markelov, who as far as I can work out, no longer races.
for the most part, 1st and 2nd in f2 were promoted either the year after, or after having a year out. i think the bigger problem is the talent we have in formula one, and the lack of talent we have not moving on from the series. with only 10 teams, and 20 drivers, there is a limit, especially when we don't have many moving on.
there is also a problem with drivers being hired/kept on because they bring something. i.e. Checo bringing money as a Mexican driver, and Mazepin's dad sponsoring the team. then you have Zhou being hired in wake of the Chinese grand prix coming back, Logan being an American driver, with the americanisation of f1. and then there's Lance who's dad brought him a team.
and that's not me saying that they didn't achieve their seat on any merit, it's just an advantage that other drivers with similar results don't have.
i think Théo Pourchaire should have a chance in f1, and i say this as someone who was really rooting for Fred Vesti last year. If sauber don't keep Valtteri on for next year, I really hope they give Pourchaire a chance.
i am irritated at mercedes for promoting Kimi this early. it's nothing against Kimi, but if they really thought that Fred Vesti was good enough to keep him in their academy, and use him for testing and sim work this year, and to do free practices last year, why would they not give him a chance. he's proven himself to be a good driver, and it would have given Kimi a little more time to race in faster cars. In similar vein, livid at Toto for criticising James Vowles for not giving Mick a chance when he had the opportunity to do the same and failed to do so.
Felipe Drugovich is an interesting one for me. sure signing with aston martin is a choice, and with the current driver pairing, unlikely to get him anywhere. but he has chosen to stay and wait, even though other series have given him offers. for me, he'll either swoop in when Fernando retires again because the car is shit, or he'll wait too long and lose any opportunity to race anything.
Robert Shwartzman is an interesting one. He's been unlucky in the fact that at a point they would have been discussing him, Russia invaded Ukraine, and as he is Russian/Israeli, it probably didn't help his career. Still he remains ferrari's test/sim driver, and although it's unlikely that will get him a seat, it keeps him around. and with wec as well, and getting his first win, he is at least racing.
Callum Ilott was unlucky. he should have had the sauber seat in 21/22, but with the signing of Zhou, he missed out. I don't think he'll race in f1, but he's done well for himself regardless. with his stint in indycar, still pisses at how that ended, and in wec as well.
Nyck De Vries was smart. after not getting an f1 seat, he went to fe, won a championship, and as he raced with mercedes, it opened up chances in f1 for him. the biggest mistake he made, was signing with red bull. i can't imagine he couldn't have found enough fe drivers that were screwed over by red bull in one way or another. they really made a shit car, let him help with its development, and then fired him to let their second favourite child race.
i fear my point may have got lost somewhere, but almost every top two in f2 had a previous association with an f1 team or gained one after winning. at which point it is on the teams to promote the drivers they've deemed good enough to support through their junior career.
sure Kimi and Ollie may not be having the best year in f2, thanks prema for making a dogshit car, but they have a history, previous results that make them so sought after. Kimi's junior record is full of wins, and Ollie's performances in his rookie years in f3 and f2 have been more than enough to get people talking.
as for the currently leader. Isack Hadjar is a red bull junior, if he doesn't get a seat next year it's because red bull are too desperate to keep on their mid drivers instead of letting new talent have a chance. Liam Lawson should have had a seat this year, and if he doesn't next year, it's utterly crazy. same for Isack, he should be in that seat in the next two years, once red bull finally let go of Checo, and maybe even Daniel, but it's unlikely.
the academies are not ruining f2, f2 is just shit currently. what the academies do do is sponsor a large number of drivers, making it much easier for them to further their career.
i do believe something needs to be done to stop this collection of talent being funnelled to the top with nowhere for them to go, but i am too tired to sort that problem tonight.
thank you for listening to my rant!
#f1#f2#that video really annoyed me#i did the research for this baby#and i can tell that the person who made that video did not#and theres nothing i like more than spending too much time researching something after someones stupidity annoys me#weve had two years of the champion not getting an f1 seat#and this year isack hadjar a red bull junior may not get a seat#the lack of promotion for talented drivers into the teams is the real criminal#thats what we should be hating on#anyway goodnight guys#i spent an hour and a half writing this#:)

Daniel Ricciardo’s blessing is his curse 🍯🦡🇦🇺
Daniel is in his 14th season of Formula 1. He has had a long career in the highest tier of motorsport. However the questions that surrounded him at McLaren seem to have followed him to Visa CashApp FFS this is seriously what you called the team!
The thing is every driver seems to reach for the F1 seat, but Daniel’s seemingly lack of ability to adapt driving style is being compounded by the grid he currently drives on. You see, either competitively or for fun most of the drivers have had to adapt to a different style of driving. Some at a stupidly young age.
Let’s look into it
Max Verstappen - spends his days off driving any kind of race car Red Bull will let him. Seeing him take his Dad round the Nordschliefe says it all really.
Sergio Perez - drove just about every form of junior open wheel car on his way to F1.
Charles LeClerc - like Daniel seems to be all F1. Do we question he’d be a beast in a Ferrari sportscar though?
Carlos Sainz - again seems to be all F1 but remember Dad has a track on the family farm. He has been driving allsorts, on dirt, since he could sit in a car seat
Lewis Hamilton - never competitively but again over the year Mercedes has given him opportunities to drive all sorts of high powered sports cars for promotion. Even a superbike.
George Russell - says he tested a DTM car, again gets to play with the Merc sports cars
Lando Norris - went from karting to Ginetta then to open wheel. Add a go at the Daytona 500, all competitively. Embarrassed himself at the Race of Champions. Now seems to love ice karting (weirdo).
Oscar Piastri - another one straight through to F1, however only ever driven one F1 car but I don’t worry he wouldn’t adapt
Fernando Alonso - Nando has the full set right? F1, Indycar, WEC, Daytona, Dakar. Won Le Mans. Next!
Lance Stroll - has done a couple of races in IMSA.
Esteban Ocon - drove in DTM prior to F1
Pierre Gasly - drive in Formula E prior to F1
Alex Albon - has done a season of DTM
Logan Sargeant - straight through to F1. Again only driven one F1 car.
Kevin Magnussen - various stints in sportscar series throughout the years inbetween F1.
Nico Hulkenberg - Le Mans champion, Indycar test.
Yuki Tsunoda - straight through to F1. Only ever driven 1 F1 car.
Valtteri Bottas - ice rallying. Need I say more!
Zhou Guanyu - another open wheel all the way to F1. I’m gonna give him the credit of having driven the Renault a number of times before moving to Sauber.
So you see what Daniel is up against.
Not a winter break goes by when you don’t see half the grid in a go kart. Shout out to Lando and Fernando who seem to do it midseason and all the drivers who happily jump in for promotion days. (80% of the grid). One of the biggest shocks for me was when Daniel went karting with Jenson Button in 2021 and admitted he “hasn’t done this is years” 😬
So we are getting to the core of the problem. With a grid of drivers who turn their hand to anything, sometimes for a laugh, Daniel has never really pushed himself out of what he knows. And it’s biting him.
What is of further concern for him, is Liam Lawson is hovering (he should already be in a seat but I digress). A driver who went for F2 to DTM and nearly won the championship in the first season (I’m still bitter). Then into an F1 seat and was up to speed almost immediately.
The trouble is now it’s too late to throw him into a sportscar to give him the experience, because I’m not sure he would get back into F1. If Daniel thinks the Max and Lando’s were a handful to deal with, who needed a bit of maturing to hit their stride, the Oscar Piastri’s and Ollie Bearman’s of the world are terrifying.
Daniel needs to find the solution on his own. Before it eats away at his mental health and confidence. 6 laps in a NASCAR round COTA is not gonna cut it.
I think I know what’s happened and I and he are afraid to admit it. Ask Jenson Button about the point you sit behind the wheel and no longer want to take the risk or push the limit. I worry he has hit the mental block of I can’t learn another way and the idea of taking a high powered sportscar out terrifies him.
And who’s going to let him lose in the Red Bull if that is going on in his head?
Fingers crossed he shows up and shows out in Melbourne

Katherine Legge’s motorsports resume includes experience in Formula 3, Formula Renault, a Formula One test, Champ Car, INDYCAR, A1GP, DTM, Formula E and sports car racing. Legge was the first woman to win pole in a Zetec race in 2000. One year later she won BRDC’s “Rising Star” award.
In November 2005 she became the first woman to test a Formula One car since Sarah Fisher in 2002. Legge competed in the Toyota Atlantic Championship in 2005, winning the series opener in Long Beach in her first career start to become the first woman to win a developmental open wheel race in North America. She finished the 2005 Atlantic season third in the championship with three wins and five podiums. She moved up to PKV Racing in Champ Car in 2006 and became the first woman to lead a lap in that series when she led Lap 12 at Milwaukee and went on to earn an Indy car career best finish there of sixth. She later had a massive crash at Road America but was largely uninjured and able to compete in the final two races of the season. She competed for Dale Coyne Racing in 2007 and matched her best series finish of sixth at Long Beach and earned her best Indy car start of eighth, twice, before returning to Europe to compete in the DTM touring car series from 2008-2010 where she was an Audi factory driver. After a one-year hiatus from racing, she joined Dragon Racing’s INDYCAR SERIES team in 2012 but a short-lived Lotus program led to the team only being able to secure one Chevrolet engine for two drivers and Legge only competed on oval tracks.
She moved to the Delta Wing sports car program from 2013-2015 and also competed in two Formula E races with Amlin Aguri in the 2014/2015 season. She spent three seasons with Meyer Shank Racing from 2017-2019 in a factory-backed Acura GTD program and earned four wins and 11 podium finishes – including the first win worldwide for NSX in Detroit in 2017. In 2020, she competed in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in a Lamborghini in the GTD class before switching her focus to a European-based racing program. She signed with Richard Mille Racing to take part in the 2020 European Le Mans Series and 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP2 prototype category but was injured in a pre-season testing crash after a tire failure at the Paul Ricard circuit and missed the remainder of the season while recovering from her injuries. In 2021-2022, she returned to IMSA as lead driver for Team Hardpoint, driving a Porsche 911 in the GTD class and currently competes in an Acura NSX in the GTD class for Gradient Racing in 2023. She and her co-drivers recently finished fourth in class at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
In her free time, Katherine is a Girl Scouts STEM Ambassador and enjoys skiing, cycling, training and competing in triathlons, yoga and is a vegan athlete. Legge is the second female race car driver to compete for RLL. Danica Patrick competed in the Atlantic Series with the team from 2003-2004 and in the IndyCar Series from 2005-2006.

THE CROWNING OF THE PADDOCK PRINCESS.
Take a look through her journey towards the pinnacle of motorsports. Why don't we count her achievements together?
I. KARTING TO FORMULA 4
Griffiths took up karting at the age of 8 in 2009 in West Wales before she progressed to the cadet class in 2012, becoming the MSA British Champion and British Open Champion. In 2013, she moved to the Rotax Mini Max category before she soon graduated to the KF3 class in 2014, where she earned the SKUSA Supernationals title and became the CIK-FIA European Champion, which she successfully defended in 2015. In her final year of karting in 2016, she finished 3rd in the KF1 CIK-FIA World Championship.
In the beginning of 2017, Quinton moved on to compete in the BRDC Formula 4 under the TRS Arden Junior Racing Team, wherein she had a very close fight with fellow TRS Arden Junior Racing Team driver, Oscar Piastri, for the championship, and ultimately won the championship by 65.5 points. At the end of her rookie season, Griffiths won the Autosport BRDC Award while also earning the privilege to test Formula 2, DTM, and GT3 cars. At the young age of 16, she had become the youngest-ever winner of the award following the previous achievements of fellow driver George Russell who was 17 at the time of awarding. Afterwards, she was selected for the BRDC’s Superstars Junior Driver mentorship programme, where she had once again become the youngest-ever selection.
II. FIA FORMULA 3
Although Griffiths was rumored to spend the entirety of 2018 competing for Arden International, her BRDC award had given her the privilege to skip directly to the European Formula 3, wherein she debuted as part of Prema Theodore Racing, alongside Guanyu Zhou and Ralf Aron. She made her debut in Circuit de Pau-Ville, where she finished 1st in the Drivers’ Championship with 365 points – her best finishes being first in Round 3 at Spa-Francorchamps, Round 2 at Silverstone, Round 1 at the Misano World Circuit, and a total sweep in Nurburgring. She continued her streak up until the second round of the season at Red Bull Ring. She finished ahead of her teammates, which ultimately helped Prema secure their Team Championship the very same year.
III. FIA FORMULA 2 (2019 - 2020)
Griffiths moved up to Formula 2, wherein she was signed to DAMS and set to race alongside Nicholas Latifi. She would end the season, finishing 4th behind Luca Ghiotto and short of 62 points for the championship. With her and Latifis place in the championship standings, they were able to secure DAMS their team championship for the year.
However, in the sprint race in Monza following a double rear collision with Ghiotto, Griffiths suffered a rear right puncture on her car after Ghiotto misjudged his braking for Turn 1 that led to a collision with de Vries, simultaneously hitting Griffiths. Going into Variante della Roggia, her car lost control and violently smashed on the safety barriers. Unfortunately, due to the sheer impact at the speed she was going, Griffiths suffered a break in her fifth metacarpal on her right hand which gave her about 3 to 6 weeks to fully heal.
Griffiths would unfortunately depart from DAMS the following year and temporarily resign from professional racing due to her aforementioned injury – with the rigorous training she had been subjected to before the beginning of the 2020 season, too much strain was put into her injury which only worsened her condition, hence her temporary departure from the sport.
IV. FIA FORMULA 2 (2021 - 2023)
Griffiths made her awaited comeback on the track in 2021 with her previous team DAMS, racing alongside Guilherme Samaia and Roy Nissany. However, on her comeback race in Bahrain, Griffiths experienced a major power loss which caused her retirement from the first Sprint Race of the season. Her misfortune soon followed after in the second Sprint Race wherein she climbed to 6th place by the 13th lap, but was unfortunately dropped to 10th after a safety car was deployed and rivals with fresher tyres passed her. Griffiths ended the 2021 season 13th in the Drivers’ Championship and 8th in the Teams’ Championship.
The following season in 2022, Griffiths was set to race for DAMS alongside Roy Nissany once again with high hopes to come back from the arguably worst season she has ever had in her career. Her steady positions within the points led to her finishing 5th in the overall Drivers’ championship, beating her teammate by a huge 121 points in the final standings. At the end of the season, however, it was announced that Griffiths would once again depart from DAMS and join ART Grand Prix in the 2023 season, joining Victor Martins.
Her unexpected move to ART Grand Prix was exactly what she needed to start the season on the right foot, finishing 5th and setting the fastest lap in the Bahrain Sprint Race in 2023 and 1st in the Feature Race, while also starting from pole position. Throughout the entire season, Griffiths consistently finished within the points, rarely ever getting arguably terrible results which led to her winning the Drivers’ Championship for Formula 2 in 2023 with 203 points and an 11-point gap to rival Frederik Vesti. ART Grand Prix also went on to finish 1st in the Teams’ Championships with the efforts of both Griffiths and Martins, who finished 5th in the Drivers’ Championship.
V. FIA FORMULA 1
Throughout her achievements in the 2023 season and given her performance all throughout her career, Griffiths was offered a chance to test for Scuderia Ferrari back in Fiorano to be part of the 2024 grid. Despite performing well, she was offered nothing more than a reserved driver role — one she thought would not suit her, hence the spot being given to Arthur Leclerc and Oliver Bearman. Griffiths respectfully declined further negotiations from Ferrari, believing that the Scuderia did not have enough faith in her talent to offer her a much more enticing position in the team.
At the end of the 2023 season in December, Griffiths was once again invited to test in Abu Dhabi at the Yas Marina Circuit, this time for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, alongside fellow driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Despite performing with little to no mistakes, she fell short compared to Antonelli’s results in terms of pace and ultimately, did not secure a seat for herself — one that Antonelli secured the following season, to be able to race in 2025 for the aforementioned team.
It was in January of 2024 when Griffiths received a call from Oracle Red Bull Racing and their Team Principal, Richard Martin, offering her an opportunity to test for the senior team directly in Silverstone. Clawing for a seat in Formula 1, Griffiths made quite the first impression for herself, finishing just fifth-hundreths of a second behind 4-time Drivers’ Champion Max Verstappen. Martin was incredibly impressed by the performance shown by the rookie, offering her another reserve driver role for the 2024 season. However, in her contract, a condition set by the team was that her role would put her at the forefront of consideration should a driver be taken out of Oracle Red Bull Racing.
Griffiths sat in the shadows of this news throughout the 2024 season, waiting to hear from Red Bull once again but after not receiving a call from them until the Qatar Grand Prix, she slowly started to lose hope. It wasn't until the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that she received a call to test for them one more time at the Yas Marina Circuit, alongside VISA Cash App RB driver Yuki Tsunoda. This time, Griffiths was determined to learn from her mistakes during her test drive in Mercedes the previous year.
Griffiths ran a lap time actually ahead of Verstappen's performance in 2024, which would have placed her in P5. She would finish a half a second behind Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, which only further solidified Oracle Red Bull Racing's decision on choosing Griffiths to be their second driver for the 2025 season. This news was announced to the general public last 23rd of December, 2024 via the official social media platforms of Oracle Red Bull Racing, following the departure of Sergio Perez from the team. Since then, Griffiths has been continuously preparing for her upcoming season with Red Bull with the expectations of fans worldwide hanging on her shoulders.

i'm so interested in how you started watching indy/f1 (do you watch other sports)? and who you root for?
what a nice question with very long answer! Bare with me
Ok, so my adventure with sport started when I was a toddler basically. My uncle was living with his dad - my grandfather, where I spend a lot of my time. So when they watched football, basketball on tv- local team or National team, I was sitting with them and watching. So when I was 6 I could name whole squad of out local basketball team, who was really good then. When I was 9 I was first time on their game, and it was epic. I was super interested until I was like 15, was watching all sports possibles.
When I was in high school, the club in fact stopped existing due to financial issues, but then I started to work as basketball referee (the table one) and I worked 2,5 season as referee, I liked it a lot, and I worked at many levels starting with 13 years olds, old boys, amateur leagues, students and even wheelchair players.
Then I was watching EVERYTHING started from winter sports (hi Małyszomania) to snooker, golf etc spending HOURS watching sport channels like eurosport.
In the same time, when I was a teenager, I was sometimes watching F1 because it was on open TV. When Kubica started his career in F1 OF COURSE we all watched it. (another fun story about his first race, I was on holidays with grandparents and we were listening to radio, where they have sport news every hour) When he had his accident and stopped racing there, the F1 started to be in paid tv, so I didn't have access to it, interested died.
When I started uni, my interests in sport overall was dying. I stopped beeing referee, I stopped watching everyhing. Wasn't even interested in Euro 2012 when some games were played in my city!
After 2012, I got interested in football by accident I had tumblr dedicated for Real madrid. I remember when they won la decima and it was... HUGE. I was so into it, that I was waking up at 3-4 to watch the friendly games played in USA in preseaon. Stupid I know.
So it was more or less like this until 2020, when covid happen. It's basically funny story, becasue few weeks before, I met a guy on tinder. And we were talking, I remember him watching preseason tests in 2020, before the whole world stopped, I remember talking to him about the Australian race being called off. When in July everything started, we were still talking, and since he was watching it, I started too, to have something to speak with him about. And I got invested. Season 2021 came, I was watching with him all motorsport, DTM (bc Kubica), WEC (bc of Kubica year later) Formula E, becasue he said he is going to watch it, so I turned it on too. Then Indy happen the same way.
To be honest, before I wasn't even aware that such series exists. I knew F1 and feeder series, Rally and to be honest was it. I started watching not knowing anyone in those series (except like Grosjean in indy) got into it.... Then 2022 I stopped to speak with the guy, but i was HOOKED. Since then I was twice in Berlin on E-prix, and got very interested in indy. Indy especially this year, and after I joined tumblr again in May.... It sky rocketed, as it was really sad, that I didn't know anyone to talk about it.
#omg what a long story#but I decided to skip so many parts D:#I love telling stories#I see so many typos there#sorry#I suck with grammar...

Floersch lands late place on Alpine Academy as Doohan becomes F1 reserve driver | 2023 F1 season
Sophia Floersch has been named as a ninth member of Alpine’s junior academy, just two days after the team announced a roster of eight drivers. The team has also confirmed Jack Doohan will carry out reserve driver duties for its F1 team this year. Floersch’s signing forms part of Alpine’s RacHer programme aiming to improve diversity and representation of women in motorsport by offering support for young female drivers. The 22-year-old will return to race in the FIA F3 championship this season. She survived a horrifying accident during the 2018 Macau Grand Prix which left her hospitalised with a spinal fracture. She returned to compete in FIA F3 in 2020 before later moving into endurance racing and the DTM. Pictures: Alpine reveal A523 in regular livery and pink colours for first three races “Joining the Alpine Academy is an honour and a major opportunity in my career,” said Floersch. “I have great ambitions and I am sure by applying the knowledge and expertise from Alpine, it will only help me grow. I can’t wait to start this new chapter and represent the Alpine brand on the global stage.” Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer said the team’s support for Floersch is “more than a sticker”, and she will receive the same level of support of her fellow Academy drivers, including Doohan and Abbi Pulling. The latter will compete in this year’s new F1 Academy series for women. “It’s support of our academy, just like Abbi Pulling will get,” Szafnauer told media including RaceFans at the Alpine A523 launch. We’ll help with the human performance programme that we’re putting in place and any other area. She can drive our simulator, we run old cars as well and we’ve got a decent amount of engineers that understand racing too. So we’ll help her best we can. Doohan tested for Alpine in F1 last year “She’ll be competing against the boys in a very competitive formula, Formula 3 is not easy. So we’re going to help her to to achieve.” Doohan’s appointment as reserve driver was widely expected as he has completed multiple days of Formula 1 testing with the team’s 2021 A521. He also had two Friday practice runs towards the end of the season in Mexico and Abu Dhabi in Alpine’s 2022 car. He takes over reserve duties from Oscar Piastri, who departed Alpine controversially at the end of last year after signing a race drive with McLaren. Szafnauer announced Doohan’s new role during the launch of Alpine’s A523 for the 2023 F1 season in London. “Although he can’t be with us here tonight – because he’s in Bahrain getting ready for the F2 championship where he should be, testing – we would like to announce to all of our Australian friends here and others that Jack Doohan will be our reserve driver for 2023,” he said.
