Glenn Howerton: [...] and we talk about that all the time when we're writing Sunny, it's like this moment is like 'it's not funny enough,' and I'm like yes, but is it *entertaining,* is it interesting to watch? [...]
Sure, "it's funnier" if they don't, but...

Being a fan of Sunny is crazy because something genuinely stupid will happen to one of those men in real life and that event will end up becoming a whole episode revealing the psyche of a character who has been smashed full of debauchery and trauma-based lore for 18 years is trapped in his own systems of oppression, and the majority of people who are fans of the show will still argue day and night that the characters aren't deeper than the surface.

must an episode be “good”. is it not enough for there to be gore, blood, and cannibalism.

a year on and i love dennis takes a mental health day like the leniency that he affords the workers of the system representing him reframing himself and/or the gang as simply victims who deserve kindness and forgiveness and that then allowing him to dial back his anger towards them and himself. the sweet unhealthy drinks he shouldn’t get but then actually really enjoys because self care is about treating yourself and he needs to start existing outside of his self inflicted rules and standards. n for nancy b for boy because. well. then the second n for nancy there are two n for nancys which is. well. then “who is the person who created your customer service system in such a way that the information entered into the computer isn’t passed on to the Human representative”. emphasis very much on Human. then obviously pressure cooking a diamond out of the cold heart of the system’s creator. eating it. accepting it. birthing something new and beautiful out of something now recognised as damaging and obsolete. it being gentle and merciful and crazy gay. then it all ends with him impressing and arguably minorly flirting with a security guard. incredible episode

Thinking about how Dennis read the license plate of his rental car as "B as in Boy, S, X, 365". In his own self created fantasy, Dennis Reynolds gave himself a car with a license plate of Boy Sex 365. This feels very Freudian
Edit: it's been brought to my attention that the numbers were 355 not 365. That's my mistake but the idea still stands I think

I think Dennis having to fantasize a scenario where the gang depends on him but he can’t depend on them, where he is allowed to have two entire sugary drinks (but even then only a few sips!), where he’s able to save all his anger only for the person who deserves it instead of lashing out at everyone, a scenario where he can turn bad situations into diamonds instead of letting them consume him the way they do in real life, where he himself can become a diamond, is profoundly sad and highlights how insecure he is about every aspect of his life and how desperate he is for easy solutions that don’t exist. I’m ripping his heart out and eating it

forgive me if this exact posts exists somewhere already I feel like it certainly could. but the thing about dtamhd is that the fantasy of removing the heart is not actually “violent.” he removes a man’s heart but does it with no great force; the man does not die or even react; there is a stillness and peace and even gentleness to that scene. I just do not believe Dennis engages with this fantasy on the level of “violence.”
by the same token Dennis does not see remaking & strictly controlling & criticizing the self as “violent” — he sees these things through a clinical lens, with a sense of cold necessity, and even with that gentleness — it’s what needs to be done, and it’s a kindness to do it. he additionally does not truly have a “beauty is pain/suffering” mindset because he perceives the control, restriction, & criticality, again, not as violence — but in this case a more neutral type of “effort.” he believes successfully performing this “effort” begets the “reward” of beauty/perfection.
in conclusion I ultimately do not believe dtamhd serves as definite evidence that Dennis relishes in the fantasy of or materially desires violence, because in his mind it is not “violence” the way we perceive it.
