Yume Nikki DS Theme!!

(for TWiLightMenu++'s Original R4 skin)

A fun little project of mine from a while back, I dread not having my special interests on my devices... so here's what I eventually came up with.

It never wound up on the official twlmenu theme site, due to me submitting another theme along with it, a template theme I used for exact measurements of UI elements' positions and size (yes, they cannot be altered in this skin :c )

The Theme Itself!

Here are the raw photos! Saving these with the filenames logo.png, bckgrd_1.png, icons.png and bckgrd_2.png should do the trick and make it work! Otherwise, you can just extracting the ZIP with all of the working files I've used onto your console:

With that out of the way, I will talk about my process making the theme, including whatever else I had in mind for it!

Process

I wanted this theme to feel... dynamic, I always try to go for this whenever I do customize something, make the best of what I have and even try to tell a story with it, or make it immersive... make it relevant. Do all themes need to do this? Not really, I'm just like this.

My vision was pretty simple really, since this skin in particular does not allow for a lot of freedom, just four images and all the interactive buttons are... not customizable (in size)! But, they lack graphics, so we can use the background to make graphics for them (the only button with a graphic is the manual which you can see in the first picture, bottom screen, top right).

So let's start! For the three main buttons on the first screen, they represent choosing a game, booting the cartridge, and launching GBARunner2, the GameBoy Advance emulator/hypervisor/whatever!

I believe what I originally had in mind was making all the buttons part of Madotsuki's room, but... that plan soon fell down since I realized... Madotsuki's room was too small! But I realized it was big enough for two buttons... and I thought, huh, I suppose the first and second button DO seem more related than the one for running GBA games, so boom, both of them are now packed in Madotsuki's tiny room... Selecting a game is Madotsuki playing on her console, while launching the cartridge is... an indescript boxart I referenced of NSMB, it's not great but it's also like 2 pixels large so... I didn't think it mattered that much.

And so, only the GBA button remained, my initial plan was to have Uboa on a separated white-desert-like island, but that plan fell through quick as I did not want to make more custom graphics than thhat little DS box...

Thinking what I could replace Uboa with, Poniko came to mind! And there couldn't have been a better fit, I loved how well it just worked! Madotsuki's room was latched to the bottom of the screen, while Poniko's was latched to the top...-right corner, but alas!

The final touch was making Poniko look at the door, almost as if looking at Madotsuki, I feel like this is my favorite detail out of all of them, plus some funny little gay subtext (/j /j but also the light novel exists so.)

That's it for the bottom screen of the intro images, the top screen is just Madotsuki's balcony at day, which when entering the file selection, turns to night time!

And as entering the file selection is represented by Madotsuki playing NASU, you also have NASU on the bottom screen, albeit a very squished down version of it... along with the TV and a graphic for quitting... (since it's an input that I just don't see mentioned anywhere else ever...? The graphic for "START" in it was also made by me!)

Scrapped Ideas!

Only the bottom screen in the first set of images is changed, it's just a minor alt of the placement of Poniko's room and her sprite, now facing forwards.

The second set of images is a different background for the top screen, the file selection screen, that of Mars-san... I wanted to convey the idea of going deeper into Mado's mind when you select a game, but that's still conveyed somewhat in the original, as the day turns to night, and you see NASU on the bottom, speaking of! Another difference in that screen was just hiding Uboa instead of FACE, an entirely inconsequential change, but one I wanted to mention nonetheless.

Another idea I had for bottom screen during file selection was Masada looking at the game or folder you are about to pick! This one... just didn't fit at the original resolution of the screenshot, and with the other UI clutter (the unremovable microSD/SD text in the bottom left...), it just seemed too busy, I feel with a bit of tinkering something nice can be made... but honestly I didn't want to mess far too much with it, despite my perfectionism in every other aspect of this theme.

the DS Eshop is closing on the 27th of March and whenever i see ppl talking about it it's always got to do with how the eshop crystal is the only legit way to get shiny celebi or how u need to remember to download pokemon bank, but no one talks about the themes

there's all these different themes u can buy for like £1.80 a piece that have music & some of them have panoramas on the top screen with animations on the bottom that u can see when u scroll

i personally only have a few pokemon ones but there's a large selection available

Marika burns everything she has build out of sorrow

Ranni banishes the Outer Gods and also fucks off the Lands, giving agency back to the normal beings of the Lands

Fortissax endlessly fights Death for his friend/lover

Melina burns herself and Erdtree in hopes of a better world in the hands of the Tarnished

Blaidd fights against the very reason he was created out of love for his sister

Ranni and Rykard always keep an eye on their mother, protecting her

Radahn evokes so much love from his troops that they organise a whole festival to give him a honorable death even in his madness

Radahn learns an entire new school of magic in order to still ride his favourite horse

Boc's love for his mother, his mother's love for him

How all but two endings are build on the hope that this new era (whatever it might be) will be good

Miquella attempting to create an whole new world-tree to host the forsaken and the damned

Miquella turning on the faith he was raised and even believed in to an extent, when it was unable to cure his sister's curse

The Cleanrot's loyalty to Malenia and their endurance of the Rot, only to stay in her service

Malenia marching through the entire continent in search of her brother

Finlay traveling all the way back on her own, carrying the incapacitated demigod on her back

Tanith's love for Rya

Dialos' entire questline

Edgar being driven mad after his daughter dies

Vyke embracing, to a point, the Frenzied Flame in order to save his finger maiden

You have been tossing and turning in bed yet Sylus made sure not to keep up the pin-drop silence you needed to rest, to get used to your surroundings. Sometimes it is amusing given how sensitive you are to him but apparently, not now. 

You wake up in a frenzy feeling the thumping of your heart inside your ears, eyes wide open like it has not slept for a while. The first thing you see is Sylus hovering above you. “Get off me,” you try to swat him away but he does not move a bit but the back of his fingers tilts his face under the influence.  “What did you do now?” You ask but all you receive is a raise of one of his eyebrows.

“Relax.” He walks around the bed. Your eyes follow him as he halts, one of his hands still tucked behind his back. Is he hiding something? He is standing at the foot of the bed, now with both of his arms neatly tucked behind his back. You scoot away towards the head side. It puts a smile on his face. There you are, as lively as ever. Not a moment passes by when you are not scared of him or resisting him. He walks around the bed stilling as he comes near the bedside table. “I just wanted to make sure you’re okay.” Sylus finally reveals what he is holding behind his back “Here.”

Eyes embedded with ruby-like pupils grew linear as you posed a question while staring at the bouquet of Jasmine. “You got me flowers?” You lean a little closer as he holds the bouquet. No. It doesn’t smell suspicious. It smells like Jasmine indeed. 

“Why you don’t like it?” You raise your eyes at him, lips forming a pout. Your attention falls on his pecs and muscles. He is in his night robe which means either he was sleeping or working. He grows impatient as you do not take the bouquet away from his hands so he keeps it in the water-filled vase.

“Why’re you awake?”  you ask so many questions. Ever heard of, “Curiosity killed the cat.”

Sylus looks at you, inspecting, and then jocks down in a flash almost closing the gap between you and him. “You see, his fisted hands rest on the mattress of the bed creating dips, I’m a creature of the night.” Is he even wearing anything underneath that loosely tied robe?

You lean closer. “Like a vampire or something ?” You whisper lest if someone hears.

His eyes trail off to your slightly parted lips while he wets his bottom lip. “Wanna find out? I could be something deadlier. . . ” Sylus notices as you swallow. Why are you so afraid of him? What did he ever do to you, huh?

“Good God.I’m just teasing. Relax.”He moves away from you turning around and pressing the bridge of his nose. This is not going anywhere. But you beg to differ.

“You’re going to sleep?” Sylus turns his head towards you and seeing you sitting at the edge of the bed surprises him, gives him a little hope so he follows it.

“Oh, how can I when someone else has occupied my bed.” Aah! perhaps not that fast.

“Like it's my fault as you lose your sleep,” you tartly reply looking away. Apparently, you are but he will get to that later.

He lets out a chuckle and sits on the lounge chair nearby crossing his legs. You are forced to rake your eyes away because you are sure that he is not wearing anything else except that night robe. “I’m not going anywhere. Go to sleep.” He takes the book and his specs from his reading table.

Like hell, you can now.

If you’re mostly a Sims player like me, you can share recreations of the locations and characters in whatever game you prefer! You can post analysis on parts of the game, post your head canons on the characters/world, or talk about any other ideas you've had.

You can even do something as simple as telling us all about what you liked with the game and your experiences with it or even making a ranking of the characters based off of whatever criteria you want. You could even just post some screenshots you took while playing! Do whatever works for you!

The goal of this event is to get people talking and thinking about The Urbz: Sims in the City during/around its anniversary. I want people to do whatever the hell they want, but I also want to make sure to provide some ideas as a starting point for people who may want to particpate.

Also! Since all versions of the The Urbz: Sims in the City weren’t published in all territories for a few months, you can participate until March 11th, 2025, which is 20 years after The Urbz for DS released in Europe. So, if you want to participate but don't have the time, didn't see this post, or whatever you're doing is taking longer than expected, don't sweat!

King Allant led Boletaria with a round table of brave knights. The royal Twin Fangs, Vallarfax and Biorr, Alfred, the knight of the tower, Metas, the knight of the lance, and the brave tribesman, Long Bow Oolan and his fearsome legions.

But today, Boletaria is an abysmal mess. Vallarfax was lost and Biorr slipped through the fissure, never to be heard from again. All the rest, along with Boletaria, have been devoured by the fog, and will soon be prey for the Demons.

The Boletarian knights are no longer.
