Last night was a strange night and I feel like I need to talk about it.

It was my flatmates birthday yesterday, so we invited some people round and started pre-drinking. Straight away I knew something was off, I wasn’t getting a good buzz off the alcohol. Instead I was feeling sad and lonely, I was making zero effort to join in and smiling fakely when my flatmates met my gaze.

A couple of them saw that something was off and repeatedly asked me if I was ok and if I was still up for going out, I said I was and that I was sure I would be fine after we got to the club. When we got into the club we managed to get VIP tickets and everything was going well, until it hit me. Suddenly I felt terrible, like I could burst into tears at any moment. It was a weird experience, nothing bad had happened and I was surrounded by friends who love me. I felt like I couldn’t breathe and like I was having a panic-attack. I kept telling myself that if I could last until 1:00 then I could leave and it would be acceptable, the minutes dragged on and twice I had to quickly ditch my friends and run upstairs to the VIP bathroom to just try and calm myself down. I felt really shitty and bad for plastering a very fake smile on my face and dancing like I was completely care-free. I managed to make it to 1:00 amazingly and found a friend of a friend who I had only met that night who wanted to leave early too.

We decided that we would take a bus back to uni but we just missed it, so the guy who I knew nothing about suggested we get something to eat while we waited. We ended up going to a crappy kebab shop, once we got our food we started talking and all the worries I had about this random guy and what his intentions might be disappeared. He started talking about his girlfriend and how he decided to take Italian at university just to learn her native language and so one day he could move to Italy with her and get married. This completely moved my heart and the way he spoke gave me hope in the world. Seeing an 18 year old in his first year at uni being so serious in a relationship and so excited to settle down and to love someone was incredible to see. He asked me about my life and respected me and the things I said. 

After getting back to uni we went our separate ways and I was left in shock because 1 hour talking to a stranger turned a really bad night out into a good night which made me feel more confident and a little bit less lonely. So even when you are at your lowest something very random can come around and completely flip your mood.
