I wonder if there’s some significance to the name Strix? It’s a mythological creature, but also a genus of owl. In Japanese it’s written 梟, which literally means owl, so maybe the mythological part is not intended?? I want to know more.

I love it. There’s no real equivalent to “chichi” in English, so they went with something that means dad, but is also a little weird and a little baby talk-y. Perfect. I watched a couple episodes of a fan sub of the anime, and they translated it as “Daddy” which is cute but is simply not weird enough. Anya is a Weird Little Girl.

We get a brief flashback to Anya’s time as an Eleven-style lab rat, which is sad. What does “studying” entail? I think we will all be sad when we find out ☹️

Loid returns and we are treated to a sick. ass. fight. Loid takes a guy out with a can of tuna. He breaks a chair over a dude’s head. I think there was some commentary from Endo (maybe in Eyes Only?) about how using improvised weapons just hits harder. We know more about cans of tuna than guns or whatever. We can imagine what taking a tuna can to the face would feel like.

What a dick.

Anyhow, Loid bamboozles the same guy with the same trick a second time, bravely rescuing Anya, and now it is time for a sad flashback

Anyhow, the world where kids don’t cry thing should be so corny, but they really pull it off somehow.

For some reason he decides to walk back into danger and beat those guys up?

Loid kicks everyone’s asses, and then, there’s Anya waiting for him, and she wants to stay with him. This is the moment. This is the moment where he realized, subconsciously, that he loves her. Consciously is still a work in progress. But like, he already cares about her so much. It’s been been like 2 days, and he’s gone from “I hate kids” to “I can’t abandon this little girl who I callously adopted to use for my own purposes”

A little too much stuff happens in this first chapter, on reread. The streetcar scene is such a logical ending! The Eden test, and then the subsequent complication of needing 2 parents felt tacked on, almost like that should have been padded out a little and made its own chapter, but also I am eager to get to my girl Yor so 🤷‍♀️

Looking back on some of their earlier interactions, Loid has not been thinking through Strix logically from the start. This kid has no birth certificate, and she has been repeatedly returned to the orphanage like a naughty puppy for no obvious reason. She is (allegedly) 6 and she solved a crossword where one of the words was “symplectomorphism” with no adult assistance?? There are some questions he should be asking here, but instead he’s buying her posters and snacks.

He hasn’t had anything to love in so long, you guys. He’s going to love this kid with everything he has, it’s just going to be a long, long time before he understands that it’s love.

Loid stared at the wall, unable to sleep. Yor was on the other side of the bed with their backs to one another. He could not tell if she was sleeping or not. He knew from the beginning that by pretending to be a married couple, this kind of situation had to happen. It was the mission and it was not the first time that he had shared a bed with a woman or a man for a mission. So why could not he sleep ? Why did he feel this weird feeling deep down ?

Yuri had come to visit them unannounced for dinner. He had drunk too much and Yor had refused to let him go home and left him her bed for the night. Of course, for everyone, Yor's bedroom was just a simple guest room, since they were married and like any couple they slept in the same bed. Loid closed his eyes, trying to fall asleep. He felt Yor move.

“Loid-san,” she whispered.

He could have ignored her and pretend he was sleeping, but he did not want to. He turned over and looked at her. He thought it was the first time he had been so close to her. They were almost nose to nose. His gaze bore into hers.

“I'm sorry about Yuri,” she said. “But I couldn't let him go like this.”

Loid smiled to reassure her.

“You don't have to apologize, you did well. If you want, I can go to sleep on the couch and come back before Yuri wakes up.”

Yor shook her head and blushed.

“You don’t have to. After all, we are married.”

Loid nodded. She was right, they were not doing anything wrong.

“Let's try to sleep,” he said.

“Yes. Good night Loid-san.”

“Good night.”

Yor closed her eyes and fell asleep after a few minutes. Loid looked at her. He lived with her and therefore they spent a lot of time together. He had gotten to know her and he would never have thought it possible, but he loved all those times spent with her and Anya. Without he realized it, they had become a real family. A few months ago, he would have laughed, saying that Twilight was a spy ready to do anything to accomplish the mission he was given, and not a husband and a father.

He smiled slightly as he looked at Yor. She was so peaceful in her sleep, it made the moment magical. He slowly raised his hand and brushed a strand away from her eyes. Loid froze and opened his eyes wide. What was wrong with him ? Why was he making tender gestures towards her ? It was not the first time he was tender towards a woman, but each time it was for a specific purpose. With Yor, he acted unconsciously, normally. It was the first time he had done this. And strangely, it made him happy.

He slowly took his hand away. Yor moved slightly, but she did not wake up. It was better that way. He did not know what to say to explain his gesture. He looked at her for a few more minutes, enjoying this quiet moment with her. For a moment, he was no longer Twilight the spy, but Loid Forger the family man. And for a second, he thought he would like to stay like this for the rest of his life. He slowly closed his eyes and finally fell asleep.

Blood- what would she do if she saw a stranger’s corpse: originally, pre rescas, depending on the place, she would’ve panicked. Whose body is this, what killed them, am I in danger as well? That kinda stuff. Unless it was like a funeral she accidentally got invited to (she would go to see if she knew anyone there and if she didn’t she would apologies) post ResCas, probably after stasis, legit that would’ve been just par for the course. Unless it had a Headcrab on it. Then she would stab the Headcrab (she hates those things)

Garnet- if they had to kill someone, what method would they choose: the most quick and painless way possible. Not a stranger to mercy kills after the rescas, she has found that shooting someone in the soft part right between the skull and the neck on the back of the head is the least painful and most sure fire way to kill someone, aiming up thru the skull ofc. If she didn’t have a gun on her tho she would snap their neck.

Scarlett- how does she grieve: She used to get real quiet, cuts herself off from people, silently reflect on times she had with the person. However, after the rescas, most all of her friends had already died, and she was in Europe now instead of America or Australia, so she just assumed that her family was dead, so she forced herself to channel the pain and grief into rage, helping her get through her rather extraneous circumstances. She really just needs a hug and a good cry smh

Wine- How does she act when she’s drunk: She’s a happy drunk, but is also a heavyweight. Think of it like Brooklyn 9-9’s “# drink Amy” system. She gets real fun (a little loud) for the first 5 drinks. After 5 shit hits the fan, but she knows her limits. (She gets really competitive at drink 7 is the problem)

Lipstick- What is her love language: she is probably physical affection and quality time. Poor girl didn’t have the time to spend with people to fell fulfilled in a relationship before the rescas, and probably never will again.

Poppy- Does she believe in a god: After meeting up with Gordon after the rescas, he told her about the Nihalinth, and so she believes in some sort of higher being, but not probably the Christian god. She is a woman of science after all.

Time for Jaws! You all know Jaws (hopefully) but if you don’t, they are this crime gremlin I made for Payday. Common traits among all Jaws are: extensive scarring, multiple mental disorders, propensity for explosives. But the main point is just they’re a crime gremlin

Scarlet- how do they grieve: violently. Lots of murder, lots of stealing. At the Safehouse, where they can’t lash out violently, they have this thing called a “stab pillow”, it’s a throw pillow they started stabbing when they were mad. Also they have their dogs for emotional support (Rexy and Tatsuya my beloved)

Wine- how do they act when they’re drunk: they mellow out a lot actually! Get really tired, but also usually have enough energy to play like drinking games and stuff. Very much a lightweight.

Lipstick- What is their love language: they are aroace, but with their “family”, it’s quality time. They just like being in the presence of people (they aren’t physically affectionate but very touch starved so think of them like a cat on occasion)

Poppy- do they believe in a god: no. God abandoned them.

Finished “Spy x Family” chapter 79:

You know, even though it’s another chapter where not much happened, I’m giving it a pass since it’s a Yor-centric chapter. At this point, I’ll take what I can get, especially since it feels like the series has turned into Anya’s school stories/Loid and Nightfall shenanigans. And also, the humor feels tighter. Maybe not necessarily a return to form since it’s still not as funny as the first few chapters, but there’s an improvement. It’s at least funnier than these last few chapters.

If I had to gripe, I’ll say that while Drunk Yor is a fun way to mine for comedy, it does at times feel a little too infantile. I mean, I know she’s drunk, but sometimes it feels like an excuse to write a grown woman acting like a child. And that’s kind of how Yor feels as a character in her recent appearances, like she’s regressing in maturity but the story gives an in-universe excuse for her behavior. “It’s because she’s drunk”. “It’s because she’s socially awkward”. “It’s because she doesn’t get normal people”. “It’s because she’s just weird”. “It’s because she’s flustered by Loid”.

I’ll let this go…but not gonna lie, part of me does wonder if Tatsuya Endo feels more comfortable writing children characters. It would explain why Anya takes up way more panel time than her parents, as well as all the focus on Anya’s friends. Also, it’d explain the series, at certain points, feeling like it was written for little kids. That said, I don’t really have a gripe with Yor being infantilized, there are worse things I have gripes about with this series. I just prefer adult characters to act more like adults, which I admit might be a personal thing since I’m getting old.

(I won’t say how old I am, but I will say that my favorite childhood anime was “Bleach”.)

So, for a score, I give this chapter 6.5 out of 10. It’s okay.

I had some dream about Yakuza, that Haruka was living somewhere else and wasn't oldest morning glory kid, there was someone older who was partly deaf. But most of the dream was Haruka getting new love interest after Yuta died. There was a dating sims like mini-game where Haruka was crying drunk and love interest had to choose comforting option for her. She also hid having a child and being from Morning glory. Eventually Haruka's new friends including the guy friend found out (with a little moment of them thinking Haruka is with Kiryu since Kiryu had a house made for her with child-proofs and little desk and all) and the guy confessed to Haruka with signing to make sure his almost crying confession was completely clear. He wanted another kid with Haruka too, and Kiryu left his big house for them. There was some social worker coming to check their life because "on suspicion of twincest" (even characters in the dream didn't know what that meant, but implication was because parents/kids were from an orphanage, social workers suspected incest) but the dream ended before that got resolved. :'D

(I think Haruka's new "love interest" just looked like Tatsuya Fujiwara/Yuta with fluffy hair but he wasn't Haruto's dad in the dream. 🤷🏼‍♀️)
