There's Nothing Quite Like Friends

For @remnants-of-rwby-events Day 6, friends.

... Oz might be regretting having all his friends together. It's a rare enough occasion that he never quite remembers why he prefers that. Until it happens.

It was so nice to be around his friends, for once, Ozpin mused as he glanced around the table. His house was crowded with visitors and the noise was a very welcome change to how he normally spent those few holidays where he wasn’t at Beacon with his students. It had been a very long time since they had all been together, scattered as they were throughout Remnant. But then, that tended to happen to adults. They all had their own lives, after all, and all four kingdoms were heavy weights to bear. He hadn’t exactly meant to be such close friends with Leon, Theo and James, or not at first. But they worked well together, able to support each other when needed and to be there to listen if any of them ever had doubts. The Brothers knew, Ozpin had a lot of doubts, at times.

… it was slightly less nice, later. A tipsy General Ironwood made for far too many arguments with Leon for anybody’s comfort. Qrow, as usual, was happily getting drunk in one corner. But then, he hadn’t really wanted to come at all. He was mostly there for Oz, but… yeah. Maybe he shouldn’t have been? Oz really appreciated his presence, though.

Unfortunately, James was several years older than him. Though he was hosting, cutting the older man off might result in some very awkward moments, later. Especially as he wasn’t the thought to ever acknowledge the fact that he might have gotten rather drunk at the party. Oz rolled his eyes fondly, recognising the bottle James was currently pouring shots from. It was part of a private stash, yes, but why would he ever think it was Oz’s? The rather too loud conversation seemed to confirm his belief, but surely he knew that Oz never drank? There were too many old memories tied to previous incarnations for that.

He winced, getting a slightly closer look at the bottle in question. It was really a rather expensive whiskey, part of a gift he’d given to Qrow a few months ago. Maybe he wouldn’t notice? He certainly hadn’t seemed to notice much of anything except for the frequent heated glances he shot in Oz’s direction.

That might be for the best, though, the arguments were already getting out of hand.

He exchanged a wry smile with Glynda, who was rather obviously concealing the need to laugh at them all. She’d been his friend as long as he could remember, the instantaneous connection solidifying the moment she entered Beacon as a student for the first time, Oz should probably feel guilty about that, she’d been all of fourteen and he had been her headmaster. It had all been highly inappropriate.

But he couldn’t really bring himself to regret that, since she was the only other sober person here. Especially since she, like Summer, had never bought his claims of being nineteen. He still wasn’t certain which of them was technically the elder, though from the fact he did tend to listen to her… well. Neither one of them had ever been able to explain their connection. It just was. Easy and instant best friends, like the memory of another life.

There was something deeper there, perhaps, but it wasn’t something he wanted to dig out tonight. Theo had disappeared somewhere, probably to take another of his many smoke breaks, but Oz couldn’t blame him. It was rather loud, but at least they were all having fun.

There was far too little of that, recently.

It was a mistake – drunken horniness, on Qrow's part; fleeting sentimentality (but also some drunken horniness), on Salem's. Both were aware of who the other truly was, yet uncaring in the moment.

But their little mistake leads to something permanent; something Qrow never knew could happen.

And yangs just like a very determined older sister

Yang just wants her family all safe and happy and would happily die to ensure this

Yangs just like “this is my found family” and it’s like the most important people in the world

Not that this is at all new she’s just like surrounded by them her uncle is one of the best huntsmen alive despite being falling over drunk all the time considering he does all of ozpins missions personally and always by himself Ravens so good of a criminal she was on salems radar plus she’s MAGIC and can turn into a damn bird AND so yangs gif that in her I guess + the whole maiden thing summers super important somehow connected to salem as well ironwood who was the general for a WHILE was so close to qrow he might be her or rubys god father ozpin liked strq so much he gave two members magic so he might be a godfather too cause he seems to be really close to the family too

And Yangs still just kinda there and she doesn’t consider any of these people like high and mighty or anything for being so important

She talks to ironwood super casually for the highest ranking military commander ever when he visits her after she becomes a criminal in v3 Qrows just her uncle when she speaks to Raven she’s totally ok with the idea of beating up her entire clan of criminals to get what she wants and then doesn’t respect a THING she says even after the reveal that MAGIC IS REAL and then when they Talk again after Raven joins salem, the bad guy and reveals she’s the MAIDEN which is super powerful yang insults her over and over with only one of her arms like she’s in no danger and then when she confronted ozpin/ Oscar about what Raven told her she gives him no special treatment for being a magical wizard that her entire family (minus Raven) trusts to make any decisions

Yang makes no exceptions no one is special yang would look the gods in the eyes and go “fuck off” and see nothing wrong with that

Yang & Ruby's Childhood

Oh how I wish, I wish that people would stop ignoring canon and pretending Yang & Ruby had functional adults who were good parents in their lives after Summer died. 

Because the fact of the matter is that they did not and canon has spelled this out again and again for the audience with increasing clarity every single time.

In Volume 2, Yang overtly states that Tai shut down following Summer’s to the point where his neglect became so pronounced a 5 and 3 year old who were grieving were left alone for hours and could disappear into a Grimm inhabited island looking for a different parental figure. 

Its re-established again in volume Five when Yang spells out to Weiss in no uncertain terms that after Summer disappeared, Yang, a five year old, was the one who needed to keep the family together and the trauma this inflicted on her alone is obvious. Let alone Ruby, because she was both being neglected and being raised by someone only two years her senior. Something Ruby fully acknowledges was the cast. 

There’s a multitude of other things I feel Tai has done wrong as both a teacher and a parent, but these one’s are undeniable, openly stated facets of the household. 

And Qrow doesn’t get an out by being the uncle either, oh no. 

Ruby makes it expressly clearly despite how much she loves and admires her Uncle she is very much used to him dropping back into her life shit faced drunk and being carted home by a stranger and needing to be taken care of. 

Again, by children! 

He has his reasons and his problems, but amazingly that doesn’t stop this from being a shitty way to grow up. No matter how much Tai & Qrow might love these two, they were not ‘great parents’, I wouldn’t even call them good. 

These two adults were negligent and damaging to the children under their care despite how much they may have loved them, and the fact that is ignored really burns me up inside.
