i like how the nimona movie like. emotionally it feels like a sequel to the comic. like obvis its the same core characters and a lot of similar events so its not literally 1000 years after the events of the comic, but like tonally, thematically, it feels like it.
i liked the way the comic was a bit darker, both in terms of the characters moral complexity and in the way the ending was sadder, still hopeful but more the world isnt ready yet, theres hope for change but we arent quite there yet, nimona cant come back yet, shes still an outsider and cant live with her friends in the open even tho she knows they love her. its more the world as it is now.
i was a little frustrated at first at the way everyone is much less morally complex in the movie, theres a lot more clear cut none of the good guys ever did anything wrong rlly, it felt a bit sanitized (not rlly surprising given. you know. cost of being made by a big studio. but still disappointing). but at the same time theres some different themes being explored, and then the overall throughline is more hopeful.
i like how by making ballister both a man of color and more strongly emphasizing his background of poverty and how hard he had to work to make it as a knight, the way he is much less aware of the structural problems of society and tries to cling for awhile to oh its just the director who is the problem, it rlly gets into the model minority myth, the way you grow up being fed this lie that you arent being oppressed, that you just need to work harder, to prove to your oppressors that you arent lazy or lesser, both for yourself and for others like you. ballister in the comics already knows the system is broken, his quest is not to clear his name in the eyes of a flawed legal system, hes floundering but he knows the government is rotten. movie ballister is more naive, has to be guided to see that this is bigger than his own problem of being framed.
i like how nimona gets to be a hero in this story. the comic was a story of one person seeing the humanity in a monster, in a nimona who is much more angry and bitter and lashes out much harder. both stories have the theme of being saved by a single connection, by someone seeing you, acknowledging your personhood, but the comic sort of ends there. maybe someday the rest of society will understand, but they dont yet. maybe in another thousand years.
and then you get the movie, where nimona is softer (emotionally maybe bc of the comic thousand figurative years ago), but also sadder, less bitter and more despondent. its been another thousand years and she still isnt accepted. but things are different this time. nimona has enough hope that ballisters love and acceptance makes her want to save people, to change their perception of her. and she DOES everyone sees her as a hero she gets little kids making we love nimona drawings and its like ahhhhh this is the fulfillment of the promise at the end of the comic it feels SO good it feels like closure it feels like hope i love it so much!

hey if they made a Nimona tv series or something...
what if another kingdom's ruler came to visit for diplomatic/trade reasons
and the ruler was an asshole. let's call him King Dick
he saunters in like he owns the damn place
and takes one look at Bal and goes "ah, yes. this one"
straight up gets down on one knee and proposes
Bal obviously says no, a bit flustered and awkward
King Dick brushes this off
meanwhile Ambrosius is glaring at the king
the other knights are getting a bit nervous
Ambs is well known for being protective of Bal
he also has a history of biting
but he keeps his cool and jealously casually puts his arm around Bal
King Dick does not like this
for like, a few days or so he makes a point of trying to woo Bal
keeps bringing him flowers, offering him riches, interrupting dates with Ambrosius
who eventually gets sick of it
so he challenges King Dick to a duel to leave Bal alone
King Dick takes it has being for Bal's hand and accepts
Ambs just wants to beat the king until he either leaves Bal alone or stops moving
whichever come first
(he's hoping it's the latter)
on Bal's end, this whole thing has been a pretty uncomfortable experience and he doesn't necessarily like Ambrosius being jealous
on the other hand, two rich, important guys are fighting over him, and in all fairness to King Dick he's actually pretty attractive in a smarmy Gaston-like way and a pretty good fighter
it makes him feel special
so he's just enjoying the show for a bit while he waits for Ambs to win
Nimona has just spent this entire plot laughing her ass off and egging Ambs on
she's just having the time of her life
like whatever the state of her relationship with Ambs at this point, she definitely considers him the better option for Bal
anyway King Dick is actually doing really well holding his own against Ambs and eventually they fight to a standstill, neither will yield
Bal's fed up. with the fight and with the king
he's tried to be polite for the sake of diplomacy but he's had enough of being harassed
so he gets between the pair of them
grabs King Dick as though he's gonna kiss him
and head-butts him as hard as he can
(bonus points if the king's wearing a helmet)
then he turns to Ambs and tells him to come get cleaned up
Ambrosius.exe stops working
he kinda nods vaguely and follows Bal to get some medical attention
Nimona loved the whole thing
she's a bit concerned how Bal did that tho
like she's seen him to it before how does he not have a concussion??
now she wants Bal to get checked out too
King Dick eventually wakes up and threatens war if Bal doesn't marry him
everyone's worried until the rest of King Dick's government officials arrive
it turns out King Dick's kingdom is run by a parliament
his family have been powerless figure-heads for generations. he has absolutely no power or authority to declare war
meanwhile the officials are begging for forgiveness for their king trying to steal Ambrosius' (currently the highest authority in the kingdom) boyfriend
everything gets sorted without issue after this
tho King Dick swears vengeance

Teeny teen Percival.
Gosh, how has it been a month since last time I drew the boy.
Anyways, Percy was pretty much of the "I'm a genius no one understands" kind, extra, sometimes obsessively perfectionist.
He did had his goofy moments, tho, lel.
16-17 years old was the time where he set his mind on what he wanted to do in the future, and It was pretty much a struggle 'cause of surrounding expectation. They weren't oppreasive at all, just casually thrown in there, but still, they got him thinking. Even his dads sometimes got at it, and he seriously had no idea how to say that for him "no, no, nah, mid is fine".
Ballister and Ambrosius at this point have been parents for literal years, and they only know slightly more on what they're doing.
They're giving their absolute best, and well, they're actually not bad!
They're different, each has his own ways, they both have their personal things they share with Percy, Ambrosius goes "ugh, have you seen him? He's picking such an attitude-" and Bal goes "like someone else I know" and then they both stare at the each other like "・–・".
Also thinking that they're in their 50s here makes me giggle a little because imagine Nimona, who perceives ages crookedly, paying a visit and going "congrats on becoming a grandpa, Boss!"
They do have their moments where they struggle understanding their son, tho, and Percy usually doesn't make it easy to be understood , because he partially feels as they should know (Percival, my boy, they're not in your brain, what are you doing).
Also, temporarily set aside how it's the second time Ballister has a teen in his house and it's making him stressed because he's self conscious how it ended up last time, sad and nostalgic because he misses his little friend, glad because hey he actually loves him and trusts him and doesn't murder people, he did a pretty good job! But also guilty, because he fully knows it's not the same situation and making the comparison doesn't feel right-
But yeah, over all they're really close, despite the occasional mix-ups :)
And nothing, have an additional family moment, as bonus 👍🏻

OKOK THANK YOU. so
I was messing around with some Nimona AU ideas was thinking abt teenage gloreth encountering nimona for the billionth time because i love them. But my ideas werent really getting anywhere yk
Ended up thinking abt shapeshifter gloreth bc that seemed like a fun idea + would solve my nimona bring immortal and gloreth being. Not immortal problem when thinking abt them thru a shipping lense
And after a while i realized Wait. This actually works
So gloreth would start out human and the events from nimona's mini backstory (go back to the shadows w glorteth thing yk) would still happen. Nimona would avoid her and the other humans for a good while after that, but never fully leave bc gloreth was the first person she felt a real connection with. Gloreth on the other hand would grow up as the 'heroic monster-slayer' altho she never slayed any monsters before or after nimona, tho she ended up a great hunter and swordfighter. She didnt really like all the attention but its her life know so she cant do much abt it
For years she'd often think she saw nimona out in the wilderness as various animals, but never properly run into her (nimona is watching but avoiding her -> has been for all those years, and liked to shapeshift her human form to match gloreth's in age, probably subconsciously)
I should probably mention that gloreth does regret what she dis to nimona, being mire mature and understanding what happened. Shes mad about it, but also conflicted, with everyone in her life having told her that nimona was a monster. She doesnt know what to believe.
Eventually due to Circumstances i havnt figured out yet (tho theyll probably involve magic), gloreth randomly turns into a shapeshifter one day. This is where im not completely sure what to do with the story, but heres some points that i know:
- nimona sees what has happened to her and reluctantly (?) decides to help her out
- gloreth initially blames nimona, thinking she'd turned her into what she percieved to be a 'monster' somehow. Nimona is upset by this but ultimately decides to keep helping her
- after that initial confusion (which never really goes away for her), gloreth feels extremely bad abt everything and desperately tries to rebuild her relationship with nimona, but nimona doesnt fully trust her since the back to the shadows incident. (This eventually leads to a 'why are you helping? Because i care about you' situation
- gloreth does eventually learn to accept herself this way instead of trying to 'fix' herself, and mostly repairs her relationship with nimona
- at some point nimona has to disguise herself as a human and go into town for reason i do not yet know. Gay things and angsty drama happens
- yuri
This was already a lot so i'll try to keep this short:
This au started out for funsies, but there is some queer metaphors buried in it, as there should be
Nimona and gloreth represent different types of queer/trans people. Nimona has known she's queer for her entire life and you don't need to know anything about her 'original' self, but she wast accepted by others. Gloreth was raised in a society that didnt accept queer people, but when encountering queer people herself, wasnt hostile, or was evwn friendly. She was either in denial or only later in life realized she's queer, but because of the people around her, stayed in denial and blamed other queer people for 'turning' or 'manipulating' her. Eventually, by interacting with others in the lgbtq community and learning more abt herself, she learned to accept herself for who she now was. Unlike nimona, who has always been queer and wants others to percieve her that way, gloreth wasn't always, and is open to discussing her previous identity as well as who she is now.
THAT WAS A LOT SORRYYY TY FOR LETTING ME RANTT
I have a page or two of doodles from this AU i might send too :D
Sorry for spelling/grammar mistakesss
Okay, first off, don’t be sorry I THOROUGHLY enjoyed myself reading this, and I would LOVE to hear more via ask or DM, and I would LOVE to see that page.
Second: this was actually fucking beautiful and reading throughout the whole thing the metaphors and symbolism came through so well you didn’t even need to mention it. Like this is so good. I usually don’t read manh AUs because they’re not always something I look for (although most are so good), but this is something I would 100% sticker subscribe to and look for and oh my god this fits so well. I’m so excited to hear more about this because I really really really want to hear more and I can’t articulate how well written the relationship is, overall story, character depth, and oh my goodness gracious this is so cool.
(Can I tag this with your blash things?)

HEY HEY HEY
Do you guys remember this post? With the Goldenheart fankid?
Remember how I talked about Bal and Ambrosius as parents??
Well, here's basically what I think they'd look like in their deep 40s, early 50s even. Kid, no kid: doesn't matter - that's old men yaoi for ya!!!
Should I... Like... Elaborate on the design choices?😭😭
Let's start off with Bal, shall we?
- I made him as hot as I could
- GLASSES BC he's an aging man let him live guys...
- beard bc I think he's grow one out eventually
- a golden earring to pay respects to Blackheart
- some cool tools to accentuate his job
- I feel like Bal is a type of guy to have a lot of body hair for some reason so uhhh I couldn't resist okay😁
- little scars on his fingers bc his job has a lot to do with creating mechanical stuff
- grey long shirt inspired by the city fashion of townsfolk in Nimona
Now, to Ambrosius
- he's kinda younger-looking since I think he still dyes his hair (doesn't bleach - dyes) his natural color and uses make-up to cover wrinkles bc he's kinda afraid of aging
(he doesn't mind Ballister aging like fine wine tho👀)
- my man's growing out his hair!!
- lavender on the ends since I think he's be a type of an adult (dad too in that sense???) who tries to understand youth's culture and stuff. Also bc lavender is the gayest color and it'd suit him so well
- a silly moustache bc I wanted to make him more dad-ish if it makes sense
- an ugly white polo shirt since HE HAS NO FASHION SENSE I'M SORRY😭😭 HAVE YOU SEEN HIS HOODIE???? BOY-
- yeah his and Bal's rings match bc silver for Bal&golden for Ambrosius except they're switched to show that they belong to each other blah-blah-blah all that romantic stuff
Them as dads would be such a chaotic duo tbh😭😭 neither of these mfs had permanent good parental figures who didn't die (in Bal's case) or weren't using them (in Ambrosius's case) and they have NO IDEA what they're doing
I know for the fact that Aquila's classmates would be head-over-heels for Ballister. HAVE YOU SEEN HIM. GOD. DAYHM
Ambrosius oh so agrees
Some memes ig- I refuse to elaborate on them
Gn!! Lemme know what you think of these designs jzjsjsjsjsja-
#nimona#ambrosius goldenloin#ballister boldheart#ballister x ambrosius#goldenheart#nimona fanart#nimona headcanons#fankid#i should draw older nimona too#despite her not really aging-#yknow what i mean#aquila boldheart

Tw: suicidal thoughts/past attempts
Ambrosius strikes me as the type of person to make a lot of "I'm going to kill myself" jokes. He'll drop a cup and laugh, "aw man, I'm going to kill myself." Stuff like that. Everyone just thinks he has a really dark sense of humor, and it's pretty in line with the types of jokes that the other knights find funny, so no one really thinks much of it. Really, it's a cry for help/unhealthy comping mechanism. He doesn't have any other way to express how he's feeling so he's using terrible "jokes." His voice when he says these things is humorful but if you look at his eyes... it's a completely different story.
Eventually, once they start dating, Ballister would ask him to stop saying stuff like that because he doesn't think it's funny. Ambrosius would hesitate but agree. He was worried that he would lose his last way to express his feelings but it's not as bad as he thought it would be because he can talk to Bal when he's upset instead of bottling it up until it gets to that point. He still says them when things get really bad though.
During and after the movie it's almost nonstop. Nobody did anything during the movie, they just thought it was a weird time to be joking around, but Bal recognizes it after the movie and it leads to a lot of discussions about how they're both feeling/their relationship. Once Nimona comes back, he's mostly in a good place but there are times where he can feel the darkness creeping in. The first time he made a "joke" like that in front of Nimona, she did not hesitate to call him out on it. He had messed up a meal he was cooking and said, "Fuck. This is my thirteenth reason; I'm going to jump off the wall." She shot up on the couch, stared him dead in the eye and growled, "Don't fucking joke about that, Goldenloin." He immediately shut up.
He caught her later and apologized for what he said, he didn't mean to upset her. She begrudgingly accepted it but told him to not say stuff like that if he didn't mean it. Hesitantly, he told her that sometimes he did mean it; those jokes were the only way he was allowed to talk about his darker feelings for a long time and it became a bad habit. She stared blankly at him while he explained that he's still sorry though and he'll do his best to use other ways of dealing with those feelings. In a rare moment of vulnerability, she quietly explained what happened at Gloreth's statue. Now it was his turn to stare in shock.
They end the conversation in an unexpected understanding. It actually brings them closer and gives them something to relate to that's not the persona they put on. They both agree that they desperately need to get better at talking about their feelings tho lol
#basically i think it'll be interesting for nimona to be angry with him until he explains it. then she's like '...you're like me'#maybe it's the first thing they realize they have in common. besides ballister#ofc from there their friendship grows but i think this would be an interesting basis for it#nimona#ambrosius goldenloin#nimona headcanon#tw suicidal thoughts

Thoughts on Nimona (because a good friend asked):
Source: me, an expert on the webcomic (joking)
Okay SO:
There is so much foreshadowing in the beginning of the movie, which technically also happens at the beginning of the book, with Nimona's little red drawings too, but somehow for me it was different to see it animated
Goleth in the book Is Not A Thing. Doesn't exist. There IS no "1,000 years ago the kingdom was cursed" stuff. They said Goleth and I mentally went "who the FUCK is Goleth??"
In the book/webcomic/graphic novel, Ambrosius is the one who cuts off Ballister's arm, on purpose. Yes, Ambrosius, the twink gay boyfriend guy. (Also, in the book they both have long hair)
It's not super important, but in the book there's a bank heist that they do complete together and it kind of sets the stage for everyone to realize Nimona is a shapeshifter and is with Blackheart
In the book, part of the 'framing the director' thing is that she & the government agency (or whatever it is) have this massive supply of jaderoot, which is like, this poisonous plant (more on that later)
I didn't fully understand that 'the Director' was like, basically the queen until I was literally watching the movie. I guess I understood her to be like, almost a head-security person? You really only see her in the book being like "guards! Capture Ballister!" or "the plan didn't work 😡"
OH. Very important. At the end of the book— in the part of the movie where they put all those spidey webs on Nimona and capture her— in the book, they bring her to.... basically an experiment lab, they put her in a tank with a lot of jaderoot and shock her and do all this torture stuff and they're basically like "Tell us how you got like this", and she talks about how she was cursed by a witch who gave her shapeshifting powers BUT they were very loose (in that she can transform into literally any animal/creature/etc) ("She wasn't a very good witch," she says)
On that note! If I remember right, basically her parents abandoned her after she became a shapeshifter (or maybe before?) and in the book, she did pillage and burn down villages in the meantime— which she references at the beginning of the movie, but it's never fully explained or expanded upon
There's this really good dialogue between Ballister and Nimona at the end of the book, which I don't think was in the movie-- where, Nimona is being tortured and they're using all the stuff to try to punish her for being 'a monster', and she says to Ballister, "You're not the only one who thought you could change me. Who thought you'd fix me until you saw who I really was" (or something like that, I'm blanking on the exact words right now), and it's at that point in the book where she turns into a little girl, and then turns really big and into that dark shadowy thing
Also, when she's a little girl, in between being different monsters (so to speak), in the book she looks at Ballister and says "You came back for me?" And he says "Of course I did"
There are references to Nimona "doing this before" in terms of being the 'monster', but there isn't the whole Goleth/chosen one backstory like there is in the movie
Nimona's voice doesn't sound like that To Me. In my head I always thought she'd be like, grittier and spunkier? She was almost like, trying too hard to be carefree and cool in the movie, IMO. Also, in the book, it is a thing where Ballister asks questions about her life and she gets Very Distracted by like, random weapons or different poisons or whatever
ALSO. This has been killing me because I don't fully remember, but. I think in the book, Nimona does almost certainly die or disappear... but there's also this really bittersweet panel with different red animals where Ballister is basically like 'Sometimes I hope you're out there and that I'll see you again someday'. And in the movie she DIED-died and I don't think she deserved that, honestly
Thank you for asking @grayscale-kaleidoscope <3 I'd love to hear your thoughts on the movie too
#personal#nimona#this is close to me infodumping so you're welcome#long post#fuzzy gemstone rainbow friend

I WATCHED NIMONA!!! As someone who read the original nimona webcomic when it was updating (roughly a decade ago??) and was rly impacted by it, I was so excited to watch the film and... they did a really good job!!! it was so beautiful i cried omg... it's def worth a watch!! (long ramble under the cut BWAHA spoiler warning)
...and it was rly completely diff from the original comic but im not complaining?? like its a v loose movie adaptation and the plot/setup was v diff but still v well done... like the comic and movie r both good in their own right... & i laughed and cried a lot... i was surprised at the extent of some of the changes but the emotional parts hit hard(my eyes r swollen from crying) and it was written v well... and visually it's just gorgeous... my jaw kept dropping at the beautiful lighting, and they brought the futuristic medieval setting to life so well i could cry😭
it's funny bc one of the main things i was afraid of was them changing nimona's backstory from the comic, bc even after a decade that's one of the things that stuck w me the most... i love nimona as a chara sm... I was so worried abt them changing it and... they ended up changing it completely... but it was actually really good?! like i cried so hard, it was well done... so I'm glad I didn't have to worry after all jdjfjd🥺 like they Did change it but both ver r good in their own right...
I understand that they had to rewrite the plot completely to fit within the time length of a single movie while still being a contained story, as is always the case w movie adaptations of books, graphic novels, etc which r much longer... Series have a chance to follow the source more closely but that just isnt the case w movies... and as far as movie adaptations go they did an amazing job!! I can rly appreciate both the comic and the movie as their own thing... and I rly liked some parts that were added to the movie, like ballister(blackheart)'s backstory in the beginning, and the addition of gloreth (and her relationship w nimona) was surprisingly compelling... And I really really love that they made Ballister and Goldenloin canon POC 😭😭😭 like that made me so happy!!!❤️🔥 When i first saw the casting of riz ahmed and eugene lee i was sooo happy, i was like YAYY IDC IF THEY LOOK WHITE IM GONNA HC THEM AS POC🥰 but the fact that i dont even have to hc bc its canon now... 🥹 SOUTH ASIAN/EAST ASIAN KINGS🛐... and they also didn't hold back with showing them openly as a gay couple... Even tho their dynamic changed a lot from the comic I rly appreciate that...
And there were things that I did miss from the webcomic, like the original setup with goldenloin and blackheart as staged nemesis, them being exes (and some time having passed since their graduation, so they're older, unlike in the movie when it just happened), etc. but the whole setup and plot and everything I completely understand why they had to change it to make it work/fit as a movie, so I get it... so not complaining there tbh bc they did what they had to do... But tbh... TBH... my one(1) complaint(/lh) w the movie... IS I REALLY MISS GOLDENLOIN'S BEAUTIFUL LONG HAIR😭😭😭💔 He would've looked so pretty with long golden locks in the movie artstyle, esp w the gorgeous lighting... glowing gold and flowing in the wind... And I think it would've fit perfectly well with the movie ver of his chara/lore too?? like the new lore of him being a descendant of Gloreth... I could imagine him growing out his hair and bleaching it blonde to fit the image/pressure of being a descendant of gloreth, and to look more flashy and heroic to the public (They did tone down his vanity a lot but im sure he still retains some of it... like he still has that pretty popular celebrity image)... And him having long hair doesnt contradict with him being asian too or the modern setting... modern asian men can and do have pretty long hair😭 Like he couldve still been Asian, just w long blonde hair... It doesn't contradict w his new personality either... And I wish they kept the golden color bc the white/silver makes him look less like a "goldenloin"... (i also love black/gold color combos personally lol)... And i just aldjskd can u imagine movie Ballister stroking Ambrosious's long hair affectionately... pls🥲 WE COULD'VE HAD IT ALL... canon asian madeleine cookie qkjdksdj... I also do miss his original stupid vain arrogant himbo personality from the comic, but I understand why they changed it (for one, charas like that might start out obnoxious but then slowly develop and gain depth over the course of the story, but in a movie's short length, there's less time to slowly grow on ppl so it'd be easier to make them more likeable from the start... so like i get it.) but I think it would've been perfect if they just kept his long hair even w his new personality😭😭 LIKE IT WOULDVE BEEN 100000% PERFECT THEN!!! So that's literally my one lighthearted complaint/dissatisfaction w the movie LMFAO... I'd be happy if ppl draw fanart of movie ambrosious w long hair... TTwTT i miss it sm DKDJZ /end rant OVERALL I HAD A GOOD time ^^ LMFAO

Fun fact i have too many AU's with my Welcome Home OC Patch so I wanted to post as many as i can in 1 post (this is all but 1 I'm still working on with a friend, for rp)
- original patch
- patchwork patch (different endings, good, neutral and bad) explaining these endings, the good ending is where Patch feels really bad about what they've done, and wants to fix it, bringing their friends back by giving back each piece they took from them. This ending is called "healed", the neutral ending is where they go crazy and tear themselves apart, from the stress of loosing their friend that promised they would never leave, and ended up running away. Thos one is called "torn" and the bad ending is where they kept taking parts of their friends, until they were all alone. Realising the weight of their actions, but with nobody to help them to fix it. This bad ending is called "all alone". Patchwork Patch has really bad autophobia (fear of being alone) which fuels its actions
- Flower Patch (inspired by flowerfell but its different) they were given a toxic flower by a friend, who didn't know it was toxic. They kept it, putting it in their hair, which resulted in the flower attatching itself to patch's body, and infecting them with an unknown disease (good ending cured, bad ending dying aka "flower bed")
- og patch but with teeth lol
- monster patch is inspired by nimona, but also a deity character I had made a while back. Able to heal, shapeshift, and mind control. But they don't like to use any of these abilities, afraid to scare anybody, especially its friends
- Test subjects patch/subject 0081, this au is something I thought would be a cool collaborative au with anyone who has interest

So I used to read a whole bunch, but then I took a small break so that I could have an actual social life. Now I'm trying to get back into it but I've tried to... I just can't get into it. Do you have any suggestions of what I could do to get back into wanting to read more?
bI relate to this SO. MUCH. It’s always hard to find a good reading/life balance, since reading can often be a very isolating activity. It’s also really difficult around this time of year for younger readers, too, since a lot of us are getting back into the swing of it with school and such and find that we have much less time to be reading what we want. So without further ado…
How I cure “reader’s block”/being in a book rut!!!
1) First of all, there’s literally no shame in reading something because it’s short and you know you can get through it, or reading something you might consider a “beach read.” If it’s less daunting for you to pick up a 70-page romance novella than Tolstoy that is perfectly!!! okay!!! What matters is that you’re still reading and it’s making you happy, not that you have gained all the answers to the universe by reading a dry and endless classic.
2) Another good option is to reread something you know you really love/want to revisit. I find it’s typically easier to read something for the second or third time and if it’s been a while, then you’ll still be surprised by little things here and there and get the warm nostalgia fuzzies. For me, one of my old favorites to revisit is Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I always read it at the beginning of the summer when I’m switching from all academic reading to personal reading (f i n a l l y) because I’m familiar enough with the story that it goes pretty quickly, but I still really love it.
3) In a similar vein, I find it really fun when I don’t want to sit down and read seriously to go back to some of my old favorites from childhood! For example, I loved the Deltora books by Emily Rodda when I was a kid and had some fun the other day going back through some of them and reminiscing. It has the potential to remind you of your love for stories and also in my case, it reminded my why I fell in love with fantasy at a young age and why I’m still so passionate about it! Reading children’s/middle grade/YA books is always acceptable and so much fun at any age.
4) This Barnes and Noble Reader article also suggests reading about books if you can’t actually read a book. As they explain it, find book blogs (like those on tumblr!) that speak to your interests and get you excited about picking up books. Other people’s enthusiasm goes a long way in encouraging you to also pick up a book to read!
5) If you can, find other avid readers and friends who you feel comfortable sitting in silence with! One of my favorite memories ever is sitting on my friend’s back porch and trading the books of the KARE First Love manga series back and forth. We played peaceful music in the background and so we were spending time as friends AND getting reading done. This lead us to discuss our favorite scenes and how we felt about certain translations (literally just because we like how to guy asked the main girl out in the online scantalation better than the printed book rip). But we ended up really getting into this series that in all honesty is kind of silly (despite the soft spot I have in my heart for it) and we joke about it all the time. Reading and socializing in one!
6) And speaking of manga…it’s always a great bridge for getting back into reading when it’s been a while, as are graphic novels! If you haven’t ever tried manga or graphic novels and don’t think it’s your rap at least give them a chance! I thought I hated them until I read Fullmetal Alchemist and fell in l o v e! You’re getting a story and doing some reading, but the pictures really help to ease you in so that you’re not necessarily devoting the same attention that you would be with a novel that’s just pages of text. As such, each volume is pretty quick depending on how long you linger on the drawings. If you already do love manga/graphic novels, then try picking up a new series you’ve been interesting in or rereading a series you already know you like!
Here are some graphic novel recommendations!
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson (a story that does a fun take on the idea of the “bad guy” - it actually gave me way more feels than expected, and I loved the art style)
The new Ms. Marvel series written by G. Willow Wilson and illustrated by Adrian Alphona (so do not confuse this with the old Ms. Marvel, this one is better in my opinion because our hero is your average teenage Muslim girl living in Jersey City and it’s refreshing, amazing, adds diversity to the typically white/male dominated world of superheroes, and I am unabashedly in love with one of the main characters, Bruno)
Umbrella Academy written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Ba (this does another more twisted/dark take on the idea of the superhero story, if that’s something more up your alley. It’s the first book of a series I’ve really been loving lately, plus I trust Gerard Way’s taste in comics unequivocally and he wrote it so that’s a yes in my book!)
American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang (the intertwining stories of an American-Chinese boy trying to figure out his place in the world and the Monkey King of Chinese fable)
I did not include a special section for manga recommendations because most of what I read is probably not the sort of stuff to dive into after having reader’s block. Overall, the realm of shoujo might be a good place to look (things like Skip Beat!, Blue Spring Ride, Fruits Basket, and Kimi ni Todoke. Ouran High School Host Club and Dengeki Daisy were ones I really enjoyed too.)I also recently read Orange which is a fairly short series and easy to read - I loved it but major depression/suicide/mental illness tws there. In terms of shonen, Hunter x Hunter would be a good one because not only is it amazing, but it’s broken up into shorter yet very distinct story arcs which I feel would be easier if you’re trying to get back into reading. If someone has some more recs tho, please add!
7) Another variation of manga/graphic novels is online webtoons, which are basically digitized comics. I have recently discovered them and think they’re the best. things. ever. If you’re like me and you have a horrible habit of lying in bed scrolling absently through your phone before going to bed and after waking up, this might be good for you. I have slowly been replacing my mindless Facebook scrolling with scrolling through webtoons, which has been so amazing for my mental health! My favorite app is literally just called Webtoon or maybe Line Webtoon (the icon in the app store is a green speech bubble that says “Webtoon”).
For most webtoons, chapters are generally pretty short so it doesn’t take a lot of focus but once again, you’re still reading, and you’re still getting a good story, all while laying fetal position like you might while scrolling through Facebook or texting people before bed. Not to mention you’re supporting amazingly talented artists/individuals who are oftentimes not published and doing this for fun or with the hopes of eventually being published, so you can say you followed them from the start! Also since they update only a few times a week, it gives you something to look forward to on random days.
Here are my favorite story-oriented webtoons currently:
Assassin Roommate by Monica Gallagher. Super cute and quirky romance with a great female lead, also really great in terms of body diversity, and LITERALLY THE ONLY REASON I LOOK FORWARD TO TUESDAYS, THE DREADFUL DAY AFTER MONDAY
My Dear Cold-Blooded King by limelight. Just started this but it seems pretty cool??? The author has paired up with a musician so all the chapters have music which is lit af if I do say so myself
Silk and Briar by paragoing-paragon. I think this is on hiatus but it’s shaping up to be a brilliantly-constructed fantasy story with some crazy twists and turns
instantmiso’s stuff is also really popular (Where Tangents Meet and Siren’s Lament). It’s not as much up my alley as it is pretty fluffy romance and I’m not crazy about the writing, but she is an incredibly talented artist and has great music with her chapters. Her stuff is super good for an easy read without a ton of brain power/commitment, but I say that with immense respect for her talent and abilities!
Cheese in the Trap by soonkki. This was also made into a K-Drama so I read the series and threw a little watch-party with some of my friends from my Korean class! Super good series and another great way to enjoy reading AND be social!
Here are the webtoons that are more “Sunday newspaper funnies” style, where each chapter is a mini story:
Bluechair by Shen (this is WILDLY popular and I totally see why!!! These are hilarious and have cheered me up on many a rough night!!!)
Sapphie: The One-Eyed Cat by joho (feel-good, cute comic about cats that’s also pretty funny. I shamelessly read like a hundred chapters in one sitting.)
If none of this is appealing to you, there is always the audio option! If the actual act of your eyes scanning the page is difficult because you can’t focus on anything, there are a lot of options in this realm!
8) Local libraries usually have an audiobook section that is deeply neglected, but holds some secret treasures! Whenever I go on roadtrips, I always pick up two or three before I head out. They’re also perfect for when you do mindless tasks like sorting/folding laundry, walking a dog if you have one, waiting in long lines, or on your commute to and from school or work or any other similar activities.
What’s cool is you can search for audiobooks based both on books you actually want to read, and whoever is narrating it. I know Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz had a super popular audiobook because Lin Manuel Miranda narrated it. If you want to pay, Audible is one of the most popular paid platforms for audiobooks. I haven’t personally used it, but it seems to be quite successful. One way or another, audiobooks are a good way to get back into reading without having to budget extra time to sit down with a book.
9) Podcasts can also help if you haven’t already explored those and are open to! Not all podcasts are TED talks, or political debates, or generally academic, or whatever they are stereotyped as. There are a ton that feel just like audiobooks, or at the very least like a play without any visuals. There’s a script and there’s a story and I know it’s helped me ease back into a mindset that preps me for reading because much like audiobooks you can listen to them all the time (I do so while cooking dinner and walking to classes) and it helps your mind switch from reality to the world of a story with relative ease if that makes sense. I’m pretty new to podcasts myself so don’t have a ton to recommend, but here’s what I’ve been enjoying….
Podcasts to look into:
Anything written by Mac Rogers. That includes The Message, Afterlife, and Steal the Stars. Personally, I like Steal the Stars and The Message more that Afterlife. They’re all sci-fi stories that are generally told from one perspective but you get to know amazing characters and I was not expecting the twists and turns. And Steal the Stars is still coming out so jump on the bandwagon now lol
The Adventure Zone from Justin, Travis and Griffin McElroy at My Brother, My Brother and Me (another podcast which I have not listened to). The Adventure Zone is actually them playing Dungeons and Dragons, but they’re funny as all get out (the last place I lived had a communal kitchen for dozens of people and I was always laughing like and idiot while listening to this and making dinner and I’m pretty sure everyone thought I was nuts). Eventually the Dungeon Master gets super into the story telling and they script some of it with cool music. It’s really amazing and has a nice balance between story/characters but also the element of “real people” as they’re a bunch of brothers and they’re dad all just having fun. It’s a good bridge to getting back into reading.
Welcome to Nightvale is always a classic. It’s a bit trippy for me but tons of people enjoy it. The same team also produced a podcast called Alice Isn’t Dead. I honestly know nothing about it but one of my friends always raves about it, so it has his vote!
10) And okay so here’s my last suggestion. It might feel like a bit of a cop-out because I guess it kind of is, but it often works for me. So here it is. Sometimes it just helps to sit down and remember why you like to read in the first place. The fact that you’re actively trying to get back into it isn’t meaningless. It’s a very willful decision. So what is driving you? Maybe it’s because…
reading is an escape or a way for you to cope with difficult things in your life. This can be anything from mental illness, to school/work stress, to relationship dissatisfaction, difficult family or economic situations. Maybe you just are bored of our planet earth. Sometimes you might just need to be transported into another world for whatever reason and that is totally okay.
or reading inspires you to live your best life. Maybe there’s some character in a book you love that you look up to and aspire to be. Remember that passion you had when you were first getting to know that character, and that sense of being understood or finding a role model. Maybe you want to go on an adventure as wild as that character went on and that’s your idea of living your best life. Whatever the reason is, this sort of inspiration is a powerful emotion that books make us feel and sometimes that’s also a good reason to reread a book that’s inspired you.
and I don’t know, maybe you’re a writer yourself and you draw inspiration from reading in that sense. The more you read, the more you learn about what sort of writing you like and don’t like, and you grow stronger in your craft. Good readers help make good writers (but also don’t take that to mean that if you happen to be a writer and you’ve been in a book rut for a long time that you own skills are waning. we all get in book ruts and that’s okay. maybe it’s time to seek out a new source of inspiration in a different genre or new writer)
or perhaps you simply love stories. Maybe you breathe stories like other people breathe air and you can’t imagine that side of you not existing. If you’re one of these people, that makes reader’s block twice as hard. But that doesn’t mean that if you’re not turning pages that you’re not absorbing stories. Take it slowly and ease back into it with things I already mentioned like podcasts and webtoons.
One way or another, you’ll find your way back. Maybe this post will spark something. Maybe it won’t, and it will take another few months for you to really feel gungho about reading again. That’s all okay. Take your time. Enjoy being with friends and other activities. Do what’s healthiest and what works best for you. And eventually you’ll get back to reading a ton. However it happens, I wish you the best of luck!

How many fics do you have on ao3?
23
What's your total word count?
151,328
What fandoms do you write for?
Right now I'm on a Nimona kick but I've also written for Shadow and Bone/Six of Crows, What We Do in the Shadows, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, and Puss in Boots and the Last Wish. I'm also in the middle of my first BBC Ghosts fic.
Top five fics by kudos
You're a Werewolf and I'm a Full Moon (219), The Blue Beta Bronco (144), A Decent Cup of Coffee (141), Red Bullets (127), and The Fear of Being Known (90)
Do I respond to comments?
Yes! I love responding to comments! I usually give way too many insights into my writing process/inspiration in my responses tho lol Please comment!
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
"Laters Gators" in which Steven leaves a message for his mom.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I don't like leaving things on an unhappy note so everything except "Laters Gators" has a happy ending. Some of them have really angsty middles tho.
Do you get any hate on any fic?
Never any hate but I've written several queer platonic relationships that people will comment on saying "I don't see them as a romantic partners :/ " and that gets my blood boiling bc I go to great lengths to show it's not romantic but ppl still read it that way
Do you write smut?
No, I cut to black for any sex scenes. I do write a lot of implied sex/innuendos tho
Do you write crossovers?
The only crossover I ever wrote was between Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night but I'm not opposed to crossovers. If it's funny or makes sense, I would be open to taking a stab at it
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I know of.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, but I have friends who write fanfiction and I'll help brainstorm the plot with them
What's your all time favorite ship?
I don't know my all time favorite. Ships I really enjoy that I've written for tho include Fedyor x Ivan (shadow and bone), Puss x Kitty (puss in boots), and Laszlo x Nadja (what we do in the shadows)
What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I make it a point to finish all my stories. I think I have two unfinished stories in my google drive but I don't remember what they're abt so clearly I wasn't very passionate about them. I do have a Puss in Boots series tho that I've been saying I'm going to finish for the last year. All the stories published it in are finished but the series isn't and it's really bothering me lol
What are your writing strengths?
I feel like I'm good at internal dialogue and describing details.
What are your writing weaknesses?
I've been told that my characters are always very open about what they're feeling/thinking and never lie about it. So ulterior motives ig
Thoughts on dialogue in another language
I try to include it where it makes sense. I have used google translate a lot (sorry!) but I always check that against other sites that are slightly more reliable (like word hippo)
First fandom you wrote for?
Avatar the Last Airbender. But the first one I published was for Six of Crows.
Favorite fic you've ever written?
I like fics were I'm juggling a lot of plots/character arcs and am able to tie them together in a satisfying way at the end. So in terms of things I've written that's Everything is Fine (right?) and Much Ado About Something. The first one is a Nimona fic for the everything is fine au where they all live in a cabin in the woods and nothing bad ever happens (except for the bad stuff I made happen) and the second one is a moon knight fic in the style of a Shakespearean comedy with mistaken identities and love hexagons
