Cabin Crew Capture Smugglers

North China Airways crew manager, Mrs Fen-jing Lee (pictured left above with NCA stewardess Ms Meng-yao Zhang), turned sleuth to trap a couple of wanted young smugglers attempting to sneak Class A drugs into Hong Kong on board her flight from Beijing. Observing the two men making repeated trips to one of the rest rooms, the senior stewardess, her suspicions aroused, together with Ms Zhang, proceeded to check the area, searching beneath the toilet rim. Mrs Lee and her colleague found two small packets of what turned out to be cocaine secreted there. Speculating that the drugs may have been deposited in the rest room to be collected by a member of Airport or Airlline staff in Hong Kong, the two cabin crew confronted the two suspicious passengers with their find.

After initial denials, the men eventually lost heart, confessed to attempted smuggling and surrendered to the two women. “After they had surrendered, Ms Zhang and I took the pair of them to the rear of the plane in order to hold them for the HK Police.” related Mrs Lee later. “Being caught seemed to make them very co-operative and they confessed to at least two other acts of smuggling on NCA flights while we were still tying them up!” The crew manager allowed herself a gentle smile at the memory. “We told the police about those offences too when we handed our prisoners over to them after we landed.”
