In TWP I do hope we see more Julian with Dru and Ty with Dru

But I also hope to see Dru with Tavvy dynamic in TWP.

And I’m interested to possibly see more of Tavvy’s character (I know he’ll just be 10 but still)

But Dru is def closest with Tavvy than her other siblings as she has spent the most time with him growing up. Even though Dru is closer in age with Ty, Livvy and Julian— they were always paired up Ty+Livvy, Emma+Julian

Also in TDA from Jules’ pov Tavvy is “the baby” whereas to Dru Tavvy is more her “baby brother.” So even though Dru has taken care of Tavvy, she is not as parentified as Julian

Plus Ty moves to the scholomance and Julian starts his travel year post TDA while Dru still stays in LA with Tavvy since she still has a few years till she can attend the academy.

And it’ll still takes Tavvy and Dru time to get used to Helen and Aline so they stick together. Plus when Helen and Aline go out, Dru still hangs with Tavvy.

So yeah in TWP since Ty and Dru will be the main Blackthorn siblings (like Mark and Julian in tda) hopefully Tavvy will be the main little sibling (Like Dru in tda) and have more of a role

Sorry, blackthorns as a concept are so gothic. What do you mean there are a bunch of orphaned kids with dark hair, pale skin, and creepy/mesmerizing blue eyes? What do you mean the oldest is constantly drugging his uncle to keep him sane? What do you mean the uncle is a raving lunatic hidden in the attic who befriends vampires and is weirdly obsessed with the ancient history/myths his family is named after? What do you mean the only Blackthorns who don’t have startlingly dark hair are half faerie, smelling of the wild woods, with horrible knowledge, and ears like knives? What do you mean they’ve looked the same for the last 200 years? What do you mean a villain is trying to hunt them for their blood? What do you mean they listen to the raging sea on stormy nights? What do you mean they wake up every day to see their brother wearing the face of the father he killed?

no bc reading cohf after tda is truly so heartbreaking. like these were children, they were happy and acted like kids and teenagers and they had dreams and families and people they loved more than anything in the world. like helen took care of her siblings, mark bickered with them, julian teased his older brother like a normal 12yo kid, and he didn't have to act like a father, emma waited for her parents to come home, like......

maybe it's just me but sometimes the narrative surrounding Julian & his siblings in the fandom annoys me just a little bit. especially the twins like he is not their father?? he did not raise them?? yes he did raise Tavvy but the twins are literally two years younger than him. they have the exact same age gap as Alec & Izzy.

like I understand where this perspective comes from, aka Julian. obviously it seems like common sense to take a main character at his word but you can't!! Julian's has a very disordered thought process regarding his siblings specifically and he isn't necessarily representing the situation clearly. he was forced to grow up very quickly at a young age and because of that he's created a narrative in his head that frames his siblings as being younger than they are and he's wrong!! except maybe Tavvy they ALL grew up too fast. we literally see Dru looking after Tavvy multiple times during tda like she's also raising him. and Julian is in many ways blind to that (he does work on it throughout the series tho, see: him letting Ty & Livvy go out on their own in London & treating Dru less like a little kid)

yes he refers to them as his kids sometimes, but again, this is disordered thinking. Livvy Ty & Dru don't view him at a father figure: Ty was literally the champion of wanting Mark to take over from Julian (and he hates change!!). Livvy & Ty also hacked his phone so they could keep tabs and make sure he was ok like. Julian perspection is not mutual, and even he doesn't always believe in it. exhibit a:

look at the language he uses regarding each of his siblings. in his ideal future, he wants to teach Tavvy (which is very parental) but he wants to fence with Livvy, and watch movies with Dru, and look for animals with Ty - as equals, as siblings. he just wants to be able to hang out with them doing things they love without having the burden of caring for them. which is also different to how Mark & Helen (& Aline) are referred to, as they are sharing that burden. he's not really bonding with them in the way he wants to with his younger siblings. (which also is bring us to the other contributing factor here which is that tda (& sobh) give the impression that Julian is closest with Mark and people assume that has always been the case. which isnt true but that's a whole other post lol)

anyway I really really hope twp digs into this significantly & we see more of the whole situation from Ty's & Dru's eyes. because I need Julian's framing to be broken down within the text for my own peace of mind and also because I want to see him finally have that bond back

The fact that, both in Thule and in the main universe, the Blackthorns lose Livvy and Livvy loses them reminds me of this line from Fable:

TDA characters and how I think they drive

Ash- physically cannot (the man has wings)

Dru- drives well but always makes someone else drive

Cristina - Drives fast but well

Mark- refuses to drive but if he’s convinced he drives normally but throws up when he gets out of the car

Kieran - basically almost kills everyone in the car but it’s really fun so they still let him drive

Helen - drives slow but well

Aline - was trying to be funny and pretend swerved into an old lady but accidentally did a hit and run

Tavvy - as panic attacks every time he’s in a car because he was the only one with Aline

Livvy - deceased! probably stole the car in the middle of the night just to drive and look at the lights though

Ty - literally the only person Tavvy will get in a car with now. Drives extremely well.

Julian- doesn’t speed intentionally but sometimes tries to make it through yellows

Kit- literally had no good role models in life, drives as well as one in that position does

Helen was raised by Eleanor more than any of her children were. From age 6 to 16, Eleanor acted as Helen’s mother - and by all accounts, did an excellent job. Eleanor would have been with Helen as she grew, during her first period, her first crush, her first date, first rune, first demon killed; for so many firsts, Eleanor would have been there to guide Helen.

Eleanor also would have been there for Mark, from age 4 to 14, and she would have been there as he grew up, ready to lend a hand.

Presumably, Andrew would have also been there for Helen (6-18) and Mark (4-16), but he would have focused more on the Shadowhunter side of things, rather than their basic upbringing.

Then Julian would have had his primary caretaker go from his mother (birth to 10) to his father (10-12) who was shown to be more focused on preparing his kids for Shadowhunter life. After his father died, Julian had to become the figuative “man of the house” to help his siblings.

Livvy and Ty are in a similar boat as Julian, starting out with their mother (0-8) before she died and their harsher father took over (8-10). But where the younger siblings differ from the older three, is that Julian took care of them after that (10-15). But after Livvy died, Ty went to train at the Schoolomance, where he would have grown into an adult without a “primary caregiver/parental replacement,” much like Julian.

Dru is interesting, because she’s still growing. She went from her mother (0-6) to her father (6-8) to Julian (8-13) before she, like Ty, became a student and went to the Shadowhunter Academy, where she still is at age 16.

Tavvy is perhaps the most tragic. Being raised by his mother (0) and father (0-2) at such young ages, means he has likely forgotten them. Julian raised him after that (2-7) then Helen and Aline took on the baton when Helen’s exile ended (7-9).

Helen, Mark and Julian all have approximately equal time with Eleanor, but with Julian being a baby for most of that time, we can assume that Helen and Mark (Helen moreso than Mark) remember her best.

Livvy, Ty, Dru and Tavvy all have approximately equal time with Julian, but the older kids (Livvy, Ty, Dru) probably had a harder time seeing him as a parent (because they probably remember both their parents) while Julian really raised Tavvy out of diapers.

There’s something bittersweet about Helen taking care of Tavvy. This is how it should go. The parents are dead, so the oldest - and only legal adult - should take responsibility for the baby. But it was Julian who took care of him for so long, and Tavvy knows that. Tavvy misses him.

Also this helps create parallels between Julian and Helen (substitute parent) because what are Blackthorns without parellels? (istg they all parallel each other somehow)

Do you ever just think about the moment that Julian, Mark, and the rest of the older TDA gang find out about Livvy? Like, how it's going to hit them that their little siblings are having to go through the same horrific ordeal with secrets that cut like a knife like they did? How are they going to feel about Ty (I don't think they'll be angry, just extremely sad, worried, and intent on releasing Livvy)? Will this rip them apart, knowing that necromancy is what took Livvy away from them in the first place?

everyone always complains about the ending of tda but no one ever acknowledge the Blackthorns hate it too 💔 like they're being so Normal and Mature about their siblings being split between continents that it's tricking you into thinking its not absolutely killing them inside. deep down they all want to lock their siblings in a room so they can be all together forever and ever and never say goodbye again but they can't because they know they have dreams and places where they are needed elsewhere. and they are totally cool with this honestly. like its Fine, London is halfway between New York and the Scholomance anyway. and their rooms are always waiting for them in LA when they do come home for a visit. like they're ok they'll live (lying)
