okay but the absolutely different type of hit that literature professor hob × prince of stories dream has.
can you IMAGINE. the impact that hob settling into one of his happiest careers spreading stories has on this entity. dream just white knuckling the table when he finds out and every time they meet after. palm over his mouth incandescent w lust every time hob talks about poetry. eye twitching and legs crossed when he fondly starts going on in different languages about different classics. he is the chattiest he's ever been, which makes hob perk up and chat back more, so far out from the printing press, and dream is just DYING over here.

KICHEN 2Point0 :)
It’s been well over a year since the last Harlix collaboration, but we are happy to finally be able to announce the KICHEN 2Point0! It all started way back in 2019 with the original KICHEN, so we decided we wanted to bring it back full circle and finally focus back on our much-loved room of the home. A lot has changed over the past 4.5 years, not only in our own personal work but the multitude of custom content creators that also now create kitchens for your Sims. In 2019, there were slim pickings for your homes. Now, there is such a vibrant array of content to choose from, and it really is an excellent thing for all.
In the years that followed, we have really focused on improving our technical skills and artistry, which we hope you can see with this latest set. The stand-out item for us both in the original KICHEN was the wishbone chair. We have personally both tried to find another dining chair that tops it and failed miserably! It is just the perfect chair for use in so many different settings, whether it be modern or even a rustic setting; it’s just so versatile. It deserved an update to our latest techniques and colours & it’s the only item from the original KICHEN set that has been reworked for this newest iteration. Also, back in 2019 we were a little too scared to use our internal name for that item, but in 2024 we are happy to share the appropriately named WISHBONER chair with you 😆
The KICHEN 2Point0 is also designed to fit perfectly into our current Klean & Soho sets to fulfill the kitchen part. For some reason, we always seem to be in sync with our set themes, and no more so than with Klean & Soho. The overlap was very scary tbh, with many Pinterest pins selected independently but shared in common, so we decided to do this 2 part collaboration to create a kitchen to fit both of our current sets, with the hope of creating a much more in-depth set which includes all elements required to make your dream kitchen. This first part focuses on the foundations of that dream kitchen.
All items are Base Game compatible and can be found by searching the b/b catalogue using the keyword 2Point0. As the items are designed for both of our current sets, they will also appear when you search using the keywords KLEAN or SOHO.
Set Items include:
- Counter (raised with legs) - Counter (standard) - Island (raised with legs) - Island trolley (3 pieces) - Cabinets (short) - Cabinets (tall) - Appliance Cabinet - Fridge Nooks (high & low) - Built-in Sink (wide & standard) - Dining Table (1, 2 & 3 tile) - Wishboner Dining Chair - Shelving (multiple height endings, middle & standard end pieces) - Hanging Feature Pendant Lights (multiple variants)
Now on Patreon Early Access
Public release on the 7th of May
The collaboration will continue next month and focus on appliances and clutter for your kitchens.

Dream Come True
Rating: General CW: Minor internalized ableism on Steve's end Tags: Established Relationship, Married Steve Harrington/Eddie Munson, Future Fic, Adopting a Child, Parenthood, Steve Harrington is a Sweetheart, Eddie Munson is a Sweetheart, Fluff, Domestic Fluff, Let Them Live a Quiet Life God Damn It, Mild Hurt/Comfort
For the @steddielovemonth prompt: "Love is about healing each other's wounds."
💕—————💕
They haven’t discussed children since the second month they were together. Was that probably a little too early in their relationship? Probably—Eddie will be brave enough to admit that right now. But, considering where they’re at now: Steve is forty-seven and Eddie’s forty-eight, their wedding bands are simple and gold (something easily spotted amongst the silver ones that Eddie still wears), the house they took a loan out for is painted yellow with white shutters installed (well, they paid Dustin and Will to do it. They were happy to help), they live in Massachusetts away from public eye, and though they don’t have a dog—not yet, the service dog process has been a long and weary one on Steve’s end—they have their little brown tabby cat. They’ve got a well furnished home. And years of love between them.
Nearly twenty-eight years in total. Nineteen years wedded. Six years of that are legally recognized. But that doesn’t matter. What matters is they stopped talking about the prospect of having kids.
Eddie’s initial answer at the beginning was, “Maybe. I think it would be neat. But, I’m gay, Steve. That isn’t really a possibility.” He chuckled a little bit. “I meant like adopting, but in a technical sense—Considering what’s in my pants, the possibility is still out the window.”
Steve’s was changed from what he told Nancy in that Winnebago. “I still want children. Or, just one. I want a quiet life. Even if you make it as some big rock star, I want a quiet private life.”
It was doable. What Steve had whispered on Eddie’s shoulder, that was doable. The question for years though was, When does he want that? And also, When will he leave to pursue that?
The answer was clear. Steve was never going to pursue that. That, sure, they’d have the quiet life. But never have children. And Eddie saw him wilt a little further and further. When they passed by the playground at the park. The daycare up the street from their home. After the seizure diagnosis, Steve stopped looking and thinking about it all together. It hurt Eddie’s heart.
He may have got the quiet life. And Eddie may have lived out his simple dream. He’d been a rockstar for a little bit in the late nineties and early two-thousands, retiring before they got married. But…Steve hasn’t lived his dream. Eddie hates that he thinks it’s being held back from him. Eddie’s determined to heal that hurt inside him.
——— Steve comes home from his Wednesday teaching shift around four in the evening. Eddie’s already on the couch, combing Poncho’s fur, watching the local news. He’s got a very important print out laid neatly on the coffee table. He hears Steve set down his briefcase on the dining table, his footsteps retreating to their kitchen to rinse out his thermos, coming back to the front door and placing his loafers on the shoe rack, and he hangs up his coat. Then, he enters the living room, hands scrambling to undo his tie, body leaning over the arm of the couch to press a kiss against Eddie’s mouth.
But then he pulls away, turning his whole body to watch the news. And that’s when he spots it. The flyer. He shuffles over on his mismatched socked feet, hands falling away from the collar of his dress shirt. He swipes up the paper. Behind his glasses, he squints.
It’s advertisement for the adoption agency some forty minutes out. Eddie hopes, by everything, that this will heal the pain in his own chest, and the emotional line of thinking in Steve’s brain. Hopes with everything that his body can physically give.
“What’s this about?” Steve asks. His voice is neutral. Almost…dare Eddie say, steely. Okay, maybe he made the wrong move. “We haven’t even—“
“I know,” Eddie immediately says. “I know we haven’t talked about it. But, sweetheart, just listen to me, alright?” At Steve’s confused and hesitant nod, Eddie tries to arrange his words. “This is something you’ve been wanting since forever ago. And I know that I haven’t really voiced my wants on it. But I also thought that it would never happen.
“That it would never be something people like me—“ He raises his eyebrows and points to the keyring attached to Steve’s belt loop. The short rainbow garland that sits discreetly among his keys. “—Would ever get the chance to do. But I—Steve, god, I want it so bad. I want to be able to be a dad and chase around a kiddo of our own while you’re busy at work. I want to see one off for school for their first day and cry like I’ll never see them again. Wanna make them a lunch they can bring to school, the same time that I make your lunch for your school. I want to watch them grow up with your goofy dancing skills and our combined love for music. And I—I want to be a better parent that I could’ve ever imagined.
“I want it with you,” Eddie breathes. “I want all of that with you. And I know that you still want it. Your forlorn looks at couples with babies. Every time you see Lucas and Max and their spitfire teenager, your eyes get this brightness to them that I—I have to be honest, I don’t think I’ve seen you happy like that since we got married.” He swallows at some of the implications there. And it’s not meant to be accusatory, but gosh does Eddie notice. The way his sunflower wilts. “This is just something for you to think about, okay? I know my decision on it. But think about it.”
Steve’s grip on the paper trembles. And his eyes are searing Eddie in a way that melts him. Blazing with adoration and love. “You want that?” He shakily asks. “You want to raise a kid with me?”
Eddie nods. “Yeah, baby. I really, really, really do.”
“Even though…Even though I have seizures that could scare them shitless? And I get so angry some days that all I can do is hide in our bedroom and cry? And I—You want that with somebody like me?” He hesitates to ask again. Eddie doesn’t answer, but his arms open in comfort and his eyes soften with earnest. Steve doesn’t move from his spot, though. He looks back at the paper. “What’s the—Our first step?”
“We apply. And they determine if we’re worthy and that it’ll be safe,” Eddie answers. “If they see us fit, they’ll look at our house and things like that. We’ll come back to that later on. If that’s something you still want.”
“Okay,” Steve states with fervor. “Let’s do this.”
——— After a tedious process, Eddie realizes how correct he was.
It’s a Saturday. The curtains are open. Dinner is simmering on the stovetop. And Eddie stirs the soup while he listens in on Steve’s activity in the living room.
“There you go, sweetheart,” Steve is cooing. “Good job, Carmen. Look at you.” He’s been supervising her tummy time everyday he’s able to. Loves being able to lay on his back on the floor, eyes watching their daughter, his fingers combing through her hair as she uses her wide brown eyes to wonder about the world around her.
Eddie bites back a smile.
“That’s Poncho,” Steve is saying. He’s introducing them like they’re all acquaintances around a water cooler. Eddie, maybe, snickers a little bit behind his hand. “He’s gonna be your buddy. He likes the space between his shoulder blades scratched. Just like you, huh?” And hears the moment that Steve dully traces his fingernails on Carmen’s back. She gurgles a little excited babbling. “That feels good, doesn’t it?” Steve murmurs. “Daddy likes that, too.” He’s talking about himself. Because he practically fought tooth and nail for that title. Eddie wouldn’t have it any other way.
From the kitchen archway, Eddie surveys the display on the living room floor. And Steve’s on his back in his pajamas. Glasses smooshed awkwardly up his face as his cheek is pressed against the carpet, eyes gone soft and glistening while Carmen is on her belly. Her hands are sprawled in front of her, squeezing at the soft toys they had gotten. He’s brushing his fingers through her short, curly wisps of brown hair. Then, his hand travels back down to massage and scratch at her back again. She’s wearing a pink striped onesie and a pair of white socks on her little feet.
He clears his throat to make himself known. Steve looks up at him, softly smiling. “I reckon things are going good in here?” Steve only nods, too enamored with petting at Carmen’s back. Eddie finally smiles at him. “Good,” he whispers. He leans his weight on the doorway. A dish rag thrown over his shoulder, arms crossed low over his belly, hair thrown up in a loose bun on his head. Domestic life has really begun to suit him, if he’s honest. He finds himself at ease about it now.
As he turns back to the kitchen, to serve up their bowls of soup, Steve calls his name. He immediately turns back around. Greeted with his husband’s soft face, his deepened smile lines, his messy hair spread on the carpet. He’s more youthful than ever, fatherhood has changed him for the better, at least Eddie thinks so. He hums to see what Steve needs, because by god, he’ll do anything for him.
“Thank you,” Steve whispers.
“For what?”
“Making my hurt go away,” Steve says. But Eddie’s eyebrows furrow in confusion. And Steve clarifies, “Allowing me to accomplish my final dream. I’m really happy that it’s with you.”
Eddie crosses into the living room, crouching down to kiss Steve’s forehead, pecking Carmen’s soft head, too. He combs his own fingers through Steve’s hair. Smiling at the way he keens. “You made me believe that I could be a good dad,” he admits. “I can’t wait to do this right.”
Steve brings a hand to Eddie’s cheek. His index finger softly tracing down the side of his face. “Love you,” he murmurs.
Turning his face, Eddie kisses the tip of Steve’s finger. “Love you, too,” Eddie easily says in return.
Sure, he got to be a rockstar, but he thinks that this life—Steve soft and middle aged and smiling at him, petting down their daughter’s back, cooing soft as if he’s not almost fifty—is much better than anything he could’ve ever dreamed. Maybe filling the hole in Steve’s soul, the remedy that their daughter brings—Maybe that heals something for Eddie, too.

Matthew didn’t go immediately.
When Death visited the Dreaming that day, it was just he and Lucienne she was there to see. A quick visit, she said. Informal. Just the three of them in a quiet corner of the library. Because, she said… if anyone deserved to know, it was them.
She smiled that smile of hers, and he swore something that had been broken in his little bird-sized heart started to knit back together.
He would have been gone in an instant, out the window in a flash and demands on his…er…afterlife?… be damned. But Death crooked a finger at him, and leaned down, conspiratorial, to whisper, “Matthew, give them time, okay? It won’t be easy, at first. He’s going to need it.” A quick hand stroking his back feathers, like an apology.
He coughed and studied the wood grain of the desk . “Uh…yeah. I mean…right. Of course. You…you got it, uh, Ma’am.”
But she was already gone.
So, he gave them time.
A month passed, in the Waking, by his reckoning.
How much time was time, Matthew wondered.
What did ‘time’ mean to someone who was a few billion years old? Was a month enough time for the anthropomorphic personification of everybody’s brain-stuff to become Some Guy? How did that even work, anyway? Did he need to, like, solidify? Like a pudding? Probably not the instant stuff. But what the hell did he know about pudding, he’d only ever eaten it out of a little plastic cup.
While he pondered the pudding-to-Endless equivalency method of time measurement, another month passed.
Then one evening, as he perched on one of the palace spires and watched the sun sinking down towards the rippling mirage that concealed the horizon, his patience snapped completely, without warning, and he found himself winging his way into the Waking before his own common sense could sweet talk him out of it.
He landed on the narrow sill outside of a very familiar window. Mellow lamplight spilled through the glass. He could see inside, across the comfortable living room with it’s well-worn couch and cluttered dining table, to the two figures standing together in the small kitchen.
Holy fucking shit, Matthew thought.
He lunged foreword to tap out that familiar little rhythm on the glass— shave and a haircut— and Hob was hustling over to open it in an instant, grinning like a searchlight. Then he was skidding to a stop in the middle of the kitchen counter and before him was
Before him stood
If possible, he seemed even thinner than before— whatever had happened over the past two months had happened to him hard. But he was also…softer. Was that a thing that could be? Standing in the kitchen in a faded blue (blue. blue?) tshirt and threadbare gray sweatpants and smiling. SMILING. He was Some Guy and he was looking at Matthew and smiling.
He was exactly the same. He was entirely different.
“Holy fucking shit,” Matthew said.
Dream leaned his forearms against the counter, bringing himself down to ravens-eye level and said, “Hello Matthew.”
Very eloquently, Matthew said, “Dude.” Then, the floodgates opened and he couldn’t seem to stop. “DUDE. Fuck…it’s…you! It’s you! Look at that! Holy shit! I can’t even…I mean why am I surprised I died and woke up a fucking bird but I mean…look at you!! FUCK!!” He flapped his wings emphatically and stomped, as best he could with his spindly legs. “Goddammit! These…fucking…ARRGH. No thumbs! An’ no arms! I just wanna…HOB. My dude. Would you help me out here????”
Hob, who had been standing by with the expression of someone who had sprained an internal organ with the effort not to laugh, drew a shaky breath and a hand across his mouth and stepped foreword.
“Okay, I think I see. I get you.” He stepped up to Dream, laid broad palms on his narrow shoulders, and said with great formality, “Dream…from Matthew.”
And tugged Dream forward into a crushing, bone-creaking hug, compressing the breath clean out of him.
Dream squeaked like a squeezed balloon and that…that, more than anything else, made it real.
“Yeah,” Matthew said, “That’s the stuff.”
When Hob released him a solid minute later, Dream staggered a bit and caught himself on the counter, looking slightly stunned. But the smile was back, tugging up the corners of his mouth.
“I…I thank you, Matthew,” He said. “I missed you as well.”
Matthew looked down at his skinny little bird feet, listening to the sound of his claws clicking as he fidgeted. He felt…what was this? Shy. When the hell had shy ever happened to him? Never, that’s when. Fuck that. Matthew cleared his throat and looked up at the pair standing there beaming at him under the gold kitchen lights. “So, uh. What’cha up to? Got any big plans for…uh…for your afterlife tonight?”
“Ah. Hob is teaching me how to.” Dream paused. “Not set the stove on fire. We are making—what is this?” He plucked a small box off the countertop and studied it. “Pudding. Apparently.”
The sound Matthew made would have been pppPPPpppffffftttttt if he’d had lips. Which he didn’t, so the noise that actually came out was more or less indescribable.
“It’s a step up from tinned soup,” Hob said. “Progress is being made.”
Dream slanted him a look and picked up the can of whip cream, fiddling with the nozzle. “I did make perfectly adequate tinned soup. The second time. I believe I will be more than capable of—“ The rest of the sentence was obliterated by the sound of aerosolized dairy product spurting across his face.
Dream sighed.
Hob turned around to face the refrigerator, his shoulders shaking silently, organs once again in peril.
“…Oh man,” Matthew said. “This is gonna be great.”

Hindsight
"You know Rhysie? I'm so friggin glad you talked me out of that endoskeleton plan."
Jack stands up from his desk, one of two now in the large office, and walks over to Rhys.
"I mean, look at us! I have a new body. You're Co-CEO of Hyperion. And quarterly profits are through the friggin roof baby!"
Rhys chuckles at that. "Yeah Jack, not airlocking half the R&D department every month will do that."
Jack throws his head back and groans. The kid has a point, but it doesn't mean he has to like it.
"Yeah well, I still say the numbskulls had it coming."
~~~
"Aaaand that'll do it."
Jack closes the Hatch on Rhys' arm and gives it a pat for good measure. The kid lifts his arm, inspecting it this way and that.
"What, ya don't trust my handywork cupcake?"
Rhys tilts his head at him. "Nah, it's not that. I'm just, kinda surprised you know how to fix it? I know you're more of a programmer than an engineer."
Jack can't help but laugh at that one.
"Did you forget I used to be code living in your cybernetics pumpkin? The first thing I did when I got access to Hyperion systems was learn how to repair you. Couldn't have you breaking down on me."
"Helps that you got the top of the line stuff too. Holographic palm interface. Echoeye with AR overlay. 200 year internal power supply. The works. Must have cost you a pretty penny."
Rhys slips his shirt back on as he nods, "Yeah, it definitely wasn't cheap. Cost my entire yearly bonus. I was eating instant noodles for months." He shudders at the phantom taste of noodle before looking Jack in the eye.
"It was worth it though. Without it I never would have met you."
~~~
"Hey cupcake, do you remember the time you first trusted me? When you let me into your subsystems?"
Rhys pauses from reviewing the contract and looks over at him. "Yeah, how could I ever forget? It's still the most terrifying, yet exhilarating, thing I've ever done."
"More terrifying than facing down a hoard of bandits and psychos in a race to the death?"
"Oh for sure. I didn't really have a choice. I could watch my friends die, or trust you. And let's be fair, your reputation preceded you. I mean, when you woke up, the first thing you tried to do was strangle me."
Jack couldn't help but grimace at the reminder. He'd never admit it out loud, but there was a lot he regretted about how he'd treated the kid in the early days.
"So why do you ask anyway?
Jack looked back down at the contract he was writing. "Just thinking about how far we've come, you and I. And this business deal were working on feels like that moment. For me it was pure exhilaration. It was then I knew that we could do anything, and I mean anything, if we worked together. We make an amazing team pumpkin."
Jack looked up to see the fond little smile the kid had. He was directing those at him more and more these days.
Jack clapped his hands together. "Alright, no more sappy shit or I'm gonna get a rash. Back to cracking skulls and writing loopholes."
"We're not cracking any skulls Jack."
"Hey, a man can dream can't he?"
~~~
"Wake up Jack. It's time to get up. Today's the big day!"
Jack rolled over and cracked an eye open. Ugh, he'd fallen asleep with the mask on again. Sometimes he wished he hadn't opted for it on his new body, but he just didn't feel like himself without it. The man before the mask was dead and gone, and he wasn't coming back. He was Handsome Jack now.
Rhys snapped him out of his introspection with a small shake to his shoulder. "Jack, come on. You gotta get up. The meeting's in an hour."
Right, the meeting. The most important one of his life. Jack was definitely awake now. As he sat up he realized he could smell greasy goodness wafting in from the kitchen.
Food was one thing he never took for granted anymore. Go for as long as he did without a sense of taste or smell, and you really learn to appreciate the little things.
He padded into the dining room and Rhysie turned and smiled at him.
"I know you were up late working on last minute revisions, so I made you breakfast. I hope bacon and eggs are alright. There's a pot of coffee brewing too."
Jack sat at the table and took it all in. Sometimes he couldn't believe this was his life. He never thought he'd be so domestic again.
"You're a godsend cupcake, you know that? I could just kiss you."
Rhys froze as he was plating the food, before setting it in front of Jack with a smile.
"I'm glad you like it. Now hurry up, we have a busy day"
Jack dug in gleefully. It was the best thing he'd ever tasted.
~~
"Looks like everything's in order. Pleasure doing business with you gentlemen. We'll talk again soon."
Rhysie turned towards him as the holo-call ended, business facade broken. The kid was downright giddy. It was contagious if he was being honest.
"We did it Jack! We really did it! I can't believe it!"
He thought the kid was gonna faint he was so hyped up. Instead he did something Jack never expected. He reached up, grapped his lapels, and pulled him foreward into a kiss.
Jack froze in shock, before melting into it. This was better than anything he'd ever imagined. Rhysie was a surprisingly good kisser. Finally they ran out of breath and pulled away.
"I can't tell you how long I've wanted to do that. Now just felt like the right time. We made this deal together Jack. Can you believe it? Hyperion is now the biggest company in the univer-
*CRASH*
Jack's eye flew left and right, searching for the source of the noise. He couldn't see anything though, and the mic wasn't picking up anything else. It must have just been more wreckage from Helios setting.
Jack hadn't seen another living soul since the crash. It'd been years, and he didn't want to think about how many more it could be.
That daydream was nice though. He wished it hadn't ended there. But he could always start over again. Wasn't like he had much else to do.
He flexed the arm again, trying to reach the eye, but it was a futile effort. Just like every other time. He couldn't help but look again at the scattered remains around him. The eye had long since rotted and fell to the ground. The bones were all he could really see. Everyday, reminded of his greatest mistake.
"God, I miss you Rhys..."
A Christmas Sorrow
Some more Akane Survives AU fic, this time with a more festive tone, to fit the month.
The day went by like it had become usual: Waking up, preparing, and eating, breakfast, helping Yuki with the physical therapy, so he can be able to walk again, take a small break, to both rest and be able to eat lunch, continuing the therapy exercises from they left them off, dine, and finally go to sleep.
But she couldn't help but to take a look at the calendar that night.
A year had already went by since the killing game she and Utsuro were sent to do ended.
A year since she destroyed so many lives, all in the name of her beloved master, only to survive through the sacrifices of those she loved.
Why? Why she had to live while they didn't?
Why she had to see Utsuro and Ayame throw away their lives for her to survive?
Was this her punishment mandated by the gods for having enabled Utsuro's fall from grace through her own inaction and fears?
It had to be, because why then she would have been given a second chance to live after everything she did?
She could feel her tears welling on her eyes, but she wasn't going to cry.
Crying wouldn't make her any good at this point.
Wiping her tears with her arm, she went to her bed, and prayed for her dreams to not be haunted by everything she did wrong.
To not be haunted by her own failures.
Sadly, her prayers weren't heard, and she saw their faces once again after closing her eyes.
And the only thing she could see in their eyes was hatred.
Hatred for her.
And for what she did to them.
---
When he woke up, the first thing he noticed was that it was still early in the morning.
The second one was that Sora still hadn't woken up.
He didn't gave it a lot of thought, just assuming that she was more tired than usual, thanks to her nightmares, so he decided to go to the kitchen, and start to make a breakfast for the two of them, only for a noise to stop him right on his tracks.
Crying.
And it was coming from Sora's room.
His curiosity winning over his reason, he scoot closer to the door, realizing in the process that she accidentally left it open last night, and got inside the room, where his suspicions were proven correct.
Sora was having another nightmare.
He wheeled closer to her, debating internally about what he should do, unsure if he should wake her up or not, when she twitched violently and snapped her eyes open.
But he soon realized that, even though her eyes were open, she still hadn't woken up.
And whatever she was seeing in his place, it had to be bad.
He stood completely still, only hearing her desperate, inaudible, mumbles, and deep sobbing, without knowing what to do, when she locked eyes with him, and weakly extended an hand towards him, slurring something that he was barely able to understand:
"Master Utsuro... don't leave..."
It was that name again. The one Sora always repeated like a prayer when she was having a nightmare.
But this was the first time he saw her doing something like this, begging whoever this name belonged to to stay with her.
Once again, he couldn't help but to think about what happened to her in her past, before they first met.
And why she was always repeating that name in her dreams.
Still unsure of what to do, he took her extended hand, staying at her side, and consoling her, until she finally awakes.
At least, like that, she wouldn't be alone in her dreams.
---
The first thing she saw once that terrible nightmare was over was an awake Yuki, who was right at her side, and holding her outstretched hand.
Her brain too scrambled by both the nightmare and exhaustion, she stood still for a short moment, only looking at him until he realized that she was already awake, a realization that made him flush intensely.
Clumsily trying to explain to her why he was there, he immediately left to the kitchen, mentioning something about "having to prepare their breakfast" while almost hitting the wall in his haste to leave.
It was pretty cute.
Once she left the bed, took a shower, and changed to cleaner clothes, she went to the kitchen, where Yuki had already prepared a pair of bowls with some leftover rice from the previous day, and fried eggs, for the both of them.
They had almost finished the good, when she saw Yuki taking a look to the calendar in the kitchen, before telling her what had caught his attention "Oh, it's already Christmas Eve. Do you want to do something today?"
At his question, she gave the calendar a quick glance too, and realized that Yuki was correct. It was December 24th already.
If she was going to be honest, celebrating holidays, and holidays like that one at that, has been something that she barely had the chance to do, neither in her childhood, trapped inside that terrible orphanage, nor when she became Utsuro's servant, thanks to his broken heart not having any space to celebrate anything, so Yuki's inquiry left her pretty surprised.
But that didn't meant that she wasn't interested in his suggestion.
Her ruminating silence didn't lasted long, but it was clearly leaving Yuki nervous, the boy fiddling with his hands and avoiding eye contact with her, a ghost of a blush forming on in his cheeks.
Did he thought that he said something wrong?
She wasn't sure, but it felt like it.
Holding his hands with hers, and letting the contact between the two of them to slowly but surely sooth him, she finally gave him an answer:
"Of course yes"
---
They left the building around midday, trusting in the fact that, with the sun still shining, criminal activity would be lower and they would be safe to stay outside.
And also, because he wanted to eat outside for a chance.
When Sora woke up, snow, or ash, he wasn't sure what it was, thanks to its greyish color, had fell down onto the town, and the streets were now covered with a layer of a greyish something, which would have made using his wheelchair outside impossible, except for the fact that Sora was already prepared for such a situation, securing something that reminded him of the snow chains mom always kept in the car's trunk, if the need arised, onto its wheels.
In response at his surprise at seeing it, she told him that she bought it on a store she found in the town, even though he could see that it actually looked to have been hand-made.
He didn't said anything, however.
She probably had a good reason to not tell him.
The streets were almost empty, he couldn't help but to notice while he and Sora walked around, both of people and of holiday decorations. It was clear that both the Tragedy, and everything that the Ultimate Despair did, and were doing, to keep it, had scarred everyone, one way or another.
Seeing this with his own eyes just made him hate them even more.
They spent some hours just walking around, and looking at the scarse holidays gifts and trinkets in the stores they passed by, until they started to feel hungry, where they immediately came across a fancy-looking, but almost empty, restaurant. After a short second of hesitation, the two of them went inside and asked for a empty table, before waiting for the food they ordered.
It felt a bit too convenient, the restaurant being empty like that, but he didn't said anything.
After all, it had to be just a coincidence, right?
Their stay in the restaurant was a pleasant one for the most part: The food was delicious, and staff was pretty polite, however a bit downcast thanks to the now chaotic state of the world making them find it hard to keep the place afloat. Things only soured up when they were already ready to leave.
Sora had already payed the bill, and they were getting ready to leave, when a couple entered the building, making her stop in her tracks once she noticed their presence.
They looked like your typical pair of friends, one of them having short black hair, and the other having her longer, brunette, hair in a low ponytail, but, when she saw them, he swears that he was able to see something break inside of Sora.
Her eyes became glossy, looking at something beyond the room and barely responding to his voice, staying like that, in that frozen stupor, before she just ran away, not giving him any time to react, only following her once his own shock faded away.
Thankfully, it didn't took long before he found her, sitting in a bench close to the restaurant, hands on her face and sobbing profusely.
He stood still at her side, not knowing what he could do to help her.
Since the say they met, she had been always the one who helped him with his struggles, but now that she was the one struggling, he couldn't do anything.
God, he was useless.
He started to fall into a self-deprecating spiral, only to be ripped out of it, and back to reality, when he felt the distinctive feeling of someone hugging him.
It was Sora.
And she was apologizing to him.
No, she wasn't apologizing to him, she was apologizing to the person in her nightmares.
Utsuro.
She probably was confusing him with them in her stress, but he didn't said anything.
He had a lot of questions, but now it wasn't the time to find the answers for them. If he did it, he knew that it just would hurt Sora more.
Laying his hand over her head, he let her cry onto his chest, and let out all those tears she had for those plaguing her nightmares, whoever they were.
After all, it was the best he could do for her right now.
---
After she was able to calm herself down, and they went back to the apartment, she couldn't help but to apologize for how she just... broke after those two girls entering the restaurant.
Those two girls that reminded her of what she lost.
Yuki's only response to her apologies was to tell her that he just did what she would have done if their roles were to be reversed, before telling her to stop worrying about it when she tried to press on the subject.
The rest of the day was spent mainly in silence, an unseen wariness surrounding, and slowly choking, them.
Feelings caused by the secret she had to keep from him.
She knew that, one day, she would have to tell him the truth, the truth about herself and her true connection with him, but, at the same time, she just couldn't do it.
Because, if she did it, Yuki would hate her forever.
And if he hated her, he would leave her side, leaving him completely defenseless against all the scum hiding in the corners of this now ruined world, that would take that opportunity to fulfill their sick desires through him.
Such a fate for him made her shiver from just thinking about it, driving her desire to protect him right into even further heights, no matter what would be the cost for her.
After all, this was the only way she could make up for everything she did to him as "Akane Taira".
And everything she did as a Ultimate Despair.
Their, honestly late, dinner was spent like the rest of the evening, in complete silence, before Yuki left for bed, leaving her alone with her half-eaten food.
The entire incident in the restaurant had completely killed her appetite, so she decided to leave the food back to the fridge, in the case of her being able to feel hungry again by the next day, before she took a look at the windows, and into the streets below.
Yellowish hues coming from the streetlights blended into the the blinding, and ever-changing, colors from the scarse decorative lights decorating windows and balconies, combined with the sound of voices down below, were a sign of how, with Junko Enoshima gone and the world finally having a symbol of hope to believe in, people were finally starting to heal from the horrors from the Tragedy, even if the Ultimate Despair was still alive and out there, waiting for the moment to strike again.
Looking at them, she couldn't help but to think about one thing:
Would she be able to heal from her pain too someday?
She didn't knew the answer for that question, and, if she was being honest, didn't wanted it either.
Because after all, with every horrible thing she did to win Utsuro's love, did she really deserved to heal from all this pain?
Trying to not think about it too much, she turned her head towards the door to Yuki's room, where he was now surely sleeping soundly.
She didn't knew why, but, in that moment, she couldn't help but to think about his smiling face.
An expression born from the gratitude towards someone he would never truly know.
It was painful, so painful, to see the person who was the perfect mirror image of Utsuro smiling so brightly at her, the person who ruined his life, but, at the same time, it was strangely comforting.
Maybe she felt like that because of that physical semblance Yuki and Utsuro shared.
Or maybe, it was because of the fact that, after everything she did in the past, she was finally doing the right thing for once.
Either way, she still had a duty to perform:
To take care of, and protect, Yuki Maeda until the day he could be able to once again walk on his two feet.
She had a lot of regrets and sins weighting her down, and what she did to Yuki, and his family, to give Utsuro a chance to infiltrate Hope's Peak Academy at Junko's orders was the heaviest of them all.
So she was going to do everything in her power to fix this sin of hers.
And she wasn't going to let anything stop her from doing it.
The Demons We Face | Chapter 12, Pajamas
Preview:
From where Genya was laying, the mohawked boy battled internally with the things that have protected him this far in life. Above all odds, Gideon had become someone he cared deeply for in a short amount of time. He was kind, and a small part of him felt healed, being able to cry without shame in the other boy's arms. But that in itself was dangerous. Gideon could be ripped from him at any moment like the majority of his family were. He could fuck something up, lost in his grief and guilt and every un-pretty thing inside of him and unintentionally push Gideon away…
The silver haired boy was carefully, tactfully convincing Genya to allow his walls to be lowered, but the walls were what had kept him alive and…
Parts of him were still so unsure.
The nice thing about the butterfly mansion was the feeling of safety within the walls and gardens. Surrounded by wisteria trees, it was a safe haven and no one who dwelled here needed to worry about demonic activity after dark.
The boys finished up their meals, thanking Aoi before wandering out of the dining area. Genya looked back to Gideon, who had followed behind. The silver haired boy’s attention went to the nearest window to the outside, and he noted the clear sky.
He'd gotten into the habit over the last bit of time of wandering outside with tea in hand, wanting to bathe in the moonlight when possible on the engawa. However, with Genya's arrival, things could shift. He smiled softly as he turned, just in time to face Genya who had moved to see what he was looking at.
Verdant eyes flashed with happy surprise and his smile bloomed into something more joyous as he met Genya's gaze. He was so happy to see him again, and he still hadn't quite registered that this wasn't just one of his lucid dreams.
“So partner, where to now?~” Gideon asked him, his voice light.
Genya had looked into his eyes as he turned, but noticed that Gideon had been gazing out the far window. “Well… were you wanting to go that way?” He asked, nodding towards the side of the building where the window was.
Gideon shrugged. “I don't have to, I just liked sitting outside with tea in the evenings is all.”
He slipped his hand into Genya's. “I'd much rather spend time with you, if you're up for it. Are you tired?”
Genya yawned as he asked, and it caused Gideon to yawn as well. Genya chuckled a little. “I wouldn't be opposed to settling in. But I've missed you and I want to catch up. Let's go sit outside with tea.”
It was then that Gideon noticed Genya's demeanor. He definitely looked exhausted from travel. Genya began to wander back to the kitchen but Gideon stopped him gently.
“We can sit together outside another night. Let's get tea and settle in.” Gideon gave him a warm, reassuring smile, and then followed him in so they could start a kettle together.
Another yawn from Genya, and just as he was about to protest. Gideon gave him a knowing smirk, and Genya conceded. “Alright.”
As they prep and wait for the water to boil, Gideon pulls Genya in to hold him softly. His arms wrap around his waist and he looks up into his eyes.
“I imagine you probably want your bed after the long journey. Would you mind going to my quarters first, so I can change clothes? Then we can sleep in your room.”
Genya nods, agreeing to the plan and giving a small, tired smile.
Gideon waits a moment, and then smirks as he looks at Genya. “And by sleep, I mean I'll wait until you're sleeping, and then I'll talk to your trees~”
Genya grins and shakes his head. “How will you do that without waking me?”
“I'll whisper. I'm a champion at whispering.”
“...How are you going to get out of my arms to do this?”
“It's a challenge I'm willing to calculate for.”
“Alright, it's settled then. I'm laying on top of you.”
Gideon gasps, and then laughs. “You'll crush me!!”
Genya takes the kettle off of the fire. “Nah. Mattress will help you not be crushed you'll live~”
“Don't underestimate how crafty I can be. Just because you flustered me and I stopped moving last time doesn't mean I can't escape now.”
Genya flashes him a very playful but devious grin. “Is that what happened? I think I can fluster you again. Keep you in your place. Under me~”
Gideon freezes and his face turns beet red. He stammers, grasping at any comeback he can but fuck, the image-
And Genya knows he's won, so he revels in the aftermath as the silver haired boy falters beside him. He carefully pours tea for the both of them.
Genya glances over and hands Gideon a tea cup. “I must have really got you; were you unprepared?~”
Gideon gives a little flustered laugh and nods. “Y-yeah, damn. Congrats.”
Genya carefully inches over to him and kisses his forehead, but then shifts to whisper in his ear: “You're so cute when you're flustered~”
Gideon squirms, almost dropping his tea cup. He's somehow more red now with that and he looks up at Genya as he pulls back.
“How was that? Am I on level with you, whispering champion?~”
“You're such a tease, Genya.” Such a tease and it was almost unfair. Though Gideon supposed, if he'd struck the first fluster blow, it'd be about the same.
There was another element to this though. Even if Gideon could fight back on any ground at this moment… The victorious grin on Genya's face was one of the hottest things the silver haired boy had ever seen. Confident Genya was incredibly sexy.
So this battle would go to Genya, but not without some spoils being obtained by Gideon.
“I only tease you because I like you,” Genya assured. “Now… come on. Let's get you into jammies.”
Gideon smirked. He called them ‘jammies?’ Adorable.
But Genya had called them jammies for a while prior. When he helped his younger siblings get ready for bed, they all called them jammies. Even Sanemi would call them that.
Honestly, it was the context that caused him to call them jammies in front of Gideon though. Genya was opening up to Gideon in new ways over time. This was one of them, an endearing term that he'd likely not be caught dead saying to anyone else in the present.
They made it to Gideon’s room. Opening the door, the room already smelled pleasantly like lavender. Gideon took an appreciative inhale in to bask in the calming scent, releasing it slowly.
Genya looked around his room. On his walls, Gideon had hung up sketches of things and places he'd found. Genya admired one drawing in particular, of a Rhinoceros Beetle.
It reminded him of Sanemi a little. His older brother loved rhinoceros beetles. He thought back fondly to earlier in their childhood together when he'd catch them, bring them in the house to show mother, and then be told to release them. Genya would often come with on the hunts, and he'd also follow Sanemi back to the woods when it was time to say goodbye to the beetle friend.
In the time that they'd entered and Genya had reminisced, Gideon had changed into a comfortable sleep kimono. He crept behind Genya and looked to the drawing he was admiring.
“Do you like beetles?” He asked him softly. He'd sensed from Genya's silence that he was deep in thought, and sought not to disturb him too much by entering. He stood on his toes to rest his chin on Genya's shoulder and wrapped his arms around his waist from behind..
“Yeah… but my brother loves them especially. We used to go out and look for these kinds of beetles all the time.”
Gideon listens to him carefully, giving him space to share. A moment of silence passes and Gideon releases Genya from behind. “I think they're pretty neat beetles. He was fun to draw.”
He goes to the drawing and unpins it from the wall, handing it carefully to Genya. “You should have it. It reminds you of good things, right?”
Genya's eyes widened. “I can't- it's your art, you probably worked hard on it… I can't possibly take it from you.”
“I'm giving it to you. I can always draw more.” He places it in Genya's hands and gently presses his hand over Genya's. “You'll likely give me more material, and more inspiration to draw. Plus, you gave me a gift and I want to give one back.”
Genya begins to tear up slightly. Gideon places a reassuring hand on his shoulder and leans in to kiss his cheek softly.
“It's okay, Genya. You're… you're hurting from something, aren't you? If you ever want to talk about it, I'll listen to you. I'm here.” His words were careful, just like his touch.
Genya wraps his arms around him. The pain in his chest lessens just slightly, and Gideon rubs his back slowly. The tears come despite him wanting to hold them in and he hides his face in Gideon’s shoulder.
“S-sorry-” he managed. It came out as a small choke.
“You have nothing to apologize for. You're allowed to cry. Here…”
Gideon gently leads them over to his bed so Genya can lay down, and he crawls in beside him. “I'll hold you. If you fall asleep it's okay.”
“O-okay,” he said, hiding his face in Gideon’s chest as he cried. As promised, Gideon held him close, keeping his breathing steady and gently, rhythmically, petting through Genya's soft hair. After about ten minutes… Genya had calmed.
Gideon pulled back slightly after his breathing evened out to see if he'd fallen asleep. He hadn't, and he looked up at Gideon with a sniffle, his eyes slightly puffy.
“How are you feeling, darling?” Gideon cooed to him.
Genya blinked softly to adjust to the light in Gideon's room. “...Really tired actually.”
Gideon nodded. It was to be expected. Sometimes a good cry could make one feel tired once everything finished up. He looked at Genya's uniform.
“Are you still wanting to go to your room? You'd probably feel better… being able to clean up a bit and change into pajamas.” He reached up to push some of Genya's hair from his face. “If you don't want to move, you can borrow something of mine if you'd like.”
Genya looked into Gideon’s eyes. The day was catching up with him. Hell. The *mission,* the past *month* was catching up with him. He couldn't mentally fathom moving right now.
“Could I please borrow something?” He asked, feeling somewhat pathetic that he couldn't even bear to go down the hall to his own room.
But Gideon smiled warmly at him. “Of course. Let me grab clothes for you.” He pulled away from Genya carefully, not wanting to jostle him.
Going over to his closet, he pulled out pajamas for Genya to borrow.
For all that Gideon had been through, he'd learned to parent himself pretty well. He didn't subscribe to his parents’ version of love, and while he appreciated the elderly couple who took him in out of kindness, they weren't super well equipped to handle his emotions. That's what he thought anyway. He had to regulate himself without snuffing himself out, otherwise he was certain he'd be left. Tossed out again for not adding up. If his parents could do it, anyone could.
And so he parented himself; the only person who'd be there for him at the end of the day without fail.
But… he knew that people needed each other. The world was fucked up, and people could be ripped from his grasp at any moment. But… It wasn't an excuse to isolate himself. He could show people kindness, he could be strong for those who needed help. It's why he joined the corps.
From where Genya was laying, the mohawked boy battled internally with the things that have protected him this far in life. Above all odds, Gideon had become someone he cared deeply for in a short amount of time. He was kind, and a small part of him felt healed, being able to cry without shame in the other boy's arms. But that in itself was dangerous. Gideon could be ripped from him at any moment like the majority of his family were. He could fuck something up, lost in his grief and guilt and every un-pretty thing inside of him and unintentionally push Gideon away…
The silver haired boy was carefully, tactfully convincing Genya to allow his walls to be lowered, but the walls were what had kept him alive and…
Parts of him were still so unsure.
When Gideon came back to the bed and handed Genya a set of PJs, Genya shifted and changed into them rather unceremoniously. Gideon helped by collecting Genya's clothing and setting them nearly on the nearby chair.
“Gideon…”
“Yeah?”
“...Why… Do you want me?”
Gideon felt the pain in the question. Genya was avoiding eye contact as well. Gideon sat on the bed beside him and took his hand gently.
“There are so many reasons I want you, Genya.” He pauses to squeeze his hand. “I sense that you're an incredibly kind, loving person and I would love nothing more than to experience things alongside you, and *with* you. You're… the most beautiful person I've met. The strongest person, too.”
Gideon tucked a little to try to look him in the eyes with a smile.
“You scared the *shit* out of me at first but as I got to know you … I realized that you have your walls up a lot. I'm grateful that you let me in, and it's that act and all of the ways that you continue to allow me in that make me want you more. Everything I get to learn about you… everything that is you, is precious to me.”
Genya listened to him speak, feeling his anxiety ease. He looks up to meet Gideon’s gaze and Gideon cups his cheek.
“Is that alright?” He asks softly.
Genya nods to him, a small smile gracing his face.
Gideon stands and scoops Genya into a hug from the side of the bed. “You're amazing,” he cooed into Genya's ear. It was muffled slightly into his shoulder.
“I think you're pretty amazing too, Gideon.”
Genya squeezes Gideon and pulls him into the bed with him. “Now… c’mere, and let me squish you.”
Genya grins as Gideon flails, laughing in his strong hold. “Genya, no!!”
“Genya, yes,” he says, easily rolling so Gideon is under him. Gideon squeals and hides his face in his hands, but Genya simply yawns and forces himself under Gideon’s arms.
“I'd wrestle with you more but I'm super tired,” he says sleepily into Gideons ear, smirking as Gideon squirms under his weight.
“Goodnight Gideon~”
“GENYA YOU'RE SQUISHING MY ORGANS-”
“What's that you say? You want me to squish your organs?”
“HNNNG NO-”
Genya grins big as he brings all of his limbs in to squish Gideon under him, laughing quietly as Gideon tries as hard as he can to wriggle free and stops out of exhaustion.
“Is this my life now? Is this what having a boyfriend is gonna be like?”
Genya shifts so that he's nose to nose with Gideon. “Absolutely it is,” he said, smirking before stealing a kiss from Gideon's lips and ultimately releasing him. He shifts over to the wall side of the bed, waiting for Gideon to settle into a comfy position before he cuddles him.
Gideon reaches to turn his lamp off, slipping under the blanket and inviting Genya to do the same on his side. He lays down, feeling Genya's arms wrap protectively around him as he scoots to be flush with him. Genya sticks his nose right into Gideon’s hair, breathing in and out in contentment.
They say their goodnights, and drift off to sleep at the same time as one another.
11 years later
Autumn in Wassenaar, I was preparing the table for our regular dormitory dinner with the thirty of us - our ibu Asrama was very particular about having her plates wiped clean - when all of the sudden a man came up to the dining room, introducing himself. To be honest, I forgot the name. All I remember is that he's a middle-aged man, saying that he was a renowned reporter with a long list of experience covering the media reports from areas of conflict (including Afghanistan and Syria, at that time). He went on talking about himself - which, I don't blame, because this man must have endured a lot of pressure and suffering through experiences in high risk countries as such; how he had come to a point where he felt like having a brush with death, how his whole life flashed in front of his eyes. Truly, remarkable. The man is no ordinary Indonesian guy, I thought.
…or so I thought. The conversation turns south when all of the sudden he was asking me about my background. As a regular 18 year-old girl, I responded to the question with my usual response, how I dream of making the world slightly a better place; even if it means starting from my own surrounding. How I dream of pursuing education until at least a Master's degree, since I really want to make my parents proud. How I was able to stay in the Netherlands because my parents worked hard, even though they did not come from a wealthy background - and therefore I strive to do the best I can, to be the best version of myself in the future by having a good career, as a token of appreciation to my parents. To me, it was a perfectly normal answer.
To him, though, it maybe came as slightly an offense; not to him as a person, but maybe to the version of reality that he held in his mind. He paused for a few seconds, sighed for a bit and said, with heavy voice as if he needed to get the message across to my full-of-utopia-head. I will use Indonesian this time because it's critical to get the essence of the message.
"Perempuan itu, harus tahu kodratnya"
I was stunned. I didn't know what to answer.
Really?
I came all the way to the Netherlands, leaving behind my hometown and lovely high school friends, struggled with the culture and everything - only to be dismissed by some random Indonesian guy?
Not having the poise and courage to speak my mind at that time, I just shrugged, smiled a bit (I guess it was to nullify my boiling anger inside?) and said
"Oh begitu, gimana tuh maksudnya Pak?"
Perfectly feeding into his ego by placing myself as a clueless 18 year old girl with no opinion. Great job Rasyida.
He went on explaining that no matter how high an education women have, how great their career are, their place will be (I'm really sorry to write this here but this is what he said, I still remember the scene perfectly) in the kitchen, or in bed.
I was stunned, again. Not because of surprise but because of how inconceivable his statement is.
How dare he talked to me like that? I can hear the voice in my head yelling.
At that point I decided that there is no point arguing with someone like that. Misogyny is something learned and internalized through years and years of indoctrination - not necessarily by an external party, probably through self-reinforcing belief. I would not be able to change his mind no matter what I say. Especially being a 18 year old minority girl wiping plates clean in a dormitory in a Netherlands' small town.
After keeping my internal voice in check, I just held a deep breath and said
"Terima kasih pak, saya sekarang jadi tahu kodrat saya"
and left him there with the perfectly-arranged table I set up for that night's dinner. He was there the whole night.
Fast forward to 11 years later.
I have finally received my Master's degree, alhamdulillah.
It's official: M.Sc in Business Analytics from University College London, with Distinction. Adding to my B.Sc in Industrial Engineering from University of Groningen, with Honours.
I surely know darn well, what my kodrat is.
The Malfoy Conundrum - a review
The Malfoy Conundrum by Omi_Ohmy
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Rating: M
Tags: Post-Hogwarts, HP: EWE, Countdown, Custard Creams, Green Parakeets, Cups of Tea, Insomnia, Harry Being an Idiot, Pining, Depression, Romance, Housemates, Community: hd_erised, Cooking Lessons, Tea, Cats, Bisexual Male Character, Auror Harry Potter
Word count: 49,764
Summary:
Harry’s miserable living with his memories at Grimmauld Place, so after a chance meeting he takes the opportunity to move somewhere new. His housemates, though, are rather unexpected. Especially the blond, pointy one…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Malfoy Conundrum is absolutely beautiful in so many ways. It’s so emotionally evocative it will blow you away; Omi_Ohmy is a master writer. It truly takes a read to understand the depth of the story fully, so here are my thoughts to encourage any potential readers:
From the very first paragraph, it’s clear that The Malfoy Conundrum is stunningly poetic.
“Sometimes, when Harry walked down the stairs from his bedroom, past the dining room and all the way down to the kitchen, it felt as though he was walking down into the past. The tang of pipe smoke from Order meetings still seemed to hang in the air; he half expected to hear hushed voices from the dining room, or find Molly Weasley cooking with a strained look of worry on her face. This day was worse than most: he’d dreamed of Sirius the night before. The rasp and bite of Sirius’s voice still sounded in his ear.”
The author paints a vivid picture of the past with the “tang” of pipe smoke and the “rasp and bite” of Sirius’s voice; their writing immerses you. This style continues throughout the story, pairing wonderfully with the slice-of-life content in a slideshow of beautiful images portraying Harry’s post-war life.
Omi_Ohmy’s depiction of Harry’s internal monologue is just as evocative as their description of the setting. One of my favorite parts of the Harry Potter fandom is their representation of the impact of the emotional traumas suffered by the cast of characters. The Malfoy Conundrum describes Harry’s mental state after decades of various traumas truthfully and powerfully. Equally well it describes the process of healing from depression and trauma, parallel to and supporting instead of depending on romance. The Malfoy Conundrum is beautiful in that it tells the story of many aspects of life like mental health and friendship, complementing romance in a true slice-of-life story.
Building on my last comment, another area of focus in The Malfoy Conundrum is family. I’m a sucker for any content involving Teddy Lupin. He is actually my favorite child, and after adding in Draco Malfoy with his own relationship (or lack thereof) with that side of the family, it’s a pleasure to read.
Another one of the things I most appreciate is how the story balances the known lore of the Harry Potter universe while also introducing unique elements. Harry, Draco, Blaise, and the rest are not so abstract in characterization as to be unrecognizable but still exude freshness. The dialogue in particular is lively and fleshes out each character into their own unique self.
The Malfoy Conundrum is a perfect rainy-day read. The slow pace and poetic prose mirror the soothing rainfall. Plus, with only 50k words, it’s easily bingeable in 2.5-3 hours. The more you read, the better it gets as the characters and world develop with the storyline. Do give it chance; it’s lovely! Feel free to agree or disagree with my assessment in the comments!

gulf shores, alabama, 2017
Let it come down on me, Let me see all the things that I was supposed to see. Light up a darkness I was never meant to climb out of, Like a bursting sunrise from the deepest sleep. — comedown, luke hemmings
Grace had used some of her Disney money to buy her parents their dream beach house.
“Grace LeeAnn Wagner, you better not have just left your cup on the table and walked away like that.”
But, international fame or not, she was still a daughter first.
Grace had already made it up a few stairs. She dropped her head with a sigh before retreating back to the dining room and grabbing her coffee. “Shh, Mom,” She moved to the kitchen and put the mug in the dishwasher, “You’re so loud, he’s still asleep.”
“I’m sure he’s sleepin’ like a rock.” The woman shook her head, “Having your own room and a big bed after sleeping in a cabin for years will knock you right out.”
“And if everything you’ve told us is true, he deserves it.” Her dad was still sitting at the table, sipping his coffee as he scrolled through the news on his phone. “He can sleep until three in the afternoon for all I care.”
The comforter on Dex’s bed was fluffy and soft as he rolled over, messily pushing his glasses onto his face. It was unsettling. There was no blaring horn to jolt him awake, no barracks full of people and constant noise. Just the morning ocean waves crashing onto the beach outside and the smell of fresh bacon wafting through his open door. He touched his face. The tension in his jaw was noticeably absent, his mind weirdly quiet.
“Oh, good, I thought I heard your alarm go off.” Grace smiled as her head appeared in the doorway. She strolled in and flopped across the bed, still in her animal print matching pajamas and hair in braids. Her eyes washed over him in cautious analysis. The moment Dex told her he’d had enough of Camp Jupiter and was going to go to college, she’d snatched him up. Called it a summer vacation. She’d made sure he hadn’t bought a return flight yet.
Dex stretched his arms over his head as he yawned, and she once again noticed just how much he’d grown. Describing her best friend as “beefy” felt wrong. But, here he was: beefy and strong with arms that’d make anyone swoon from training and fighting every single day. But, his energy when she’d picked him up at the airport was tight and unsettled, just as erratic as when he’d fallen apart two years prior. Dex’s eyes took in every inch of a room the moment they stepped in it, anticipating anything, like stepping outside of California was a risk.
But already, after one night, she could see bits of calm breaking through the surface. The way he lazily smiled and rubbed his eyes, jostling the glasses on his face, grumbling, “I forgot you’re so goddamn chipper the moment you wake up.”
She always loved his glasses. There was Dex the popstar, then this Dex. The nerdy boy she met when they were twelve. Who liked music, and history, and staying up until 4am to read a book, who wrote silly little poems and songs to make her laugh when work days got too long. She hadn’t seen this Dex in a long, long time. And it made her heart swell up, watching him rub the sleep out of his eyes, but scoot over in the bed so she could crawl up beside him.
Grace laughed as she settled beside him, “Mom is making biscuits and gravy.” She glanced back outside the door, “Take your time though. Seriously. I think we’ll just sit on the beach today and chill?”
He swallowed, like something had lodged in his throat and nodded, voice soft, “That sounds perfect.”
She kissed the top of his head, like she knew exactly what he wanted to say, and hopped off the bed.
—————
“So, you really met at the other camp?” Dex asked, doing his best to not absolutely shove his face full of biscuit while he spoke.
It was a relief, in a way. Dex had spent so much time with her family, as if he were a brother or cousin and not just a friend. Omitting just the right details from every story of her parents’ life had been a pain. But now it was different. Now—all along, really—Dex had been sucked into that circle as well, saw all of the same things she could. How bizarre that the number of Demigods in her life had jumped from two to three.
Grace’s Mom nodded. She had a soft smile and Grace’s same eyes. A Teacher. And like Grace, similarly always prepared. “Capture the Flag.” She smiled over her mug of coffee, “Did you guys have that in California too?”
“Like, the game you play in Gym class?” Dex raised an eyebrow, shaking his head, “I wish. We had Deathball. Which is paintball, but with acid and fire.” He said it so nonchalantly, too busy devouring a piece of bacon to notice the shocked looks on her parents faces, “And literal Gladiator fighting.”
“Well, one of us—” She cleared her throat and glanced over at her husband. Mr. Wagner was a painter, known for his dramatics, prone to forgetting his glasses on his head and staining all of his clothing, “Was ill-prepared for the game. So when I absolutely demolished him and accidentally gave him a concussion, I helped him to the infirmary. And that was that.”
She looked at him with such love in her eyes, like he was her best friend in the entire world. He reached over and brushed her cheek. “And I don’t know what I’d have done without her.”
Grace watched Dex physically hold back a swoon. She was glad to know he was still a romantic sap at heart. Instead he chewed his food methodically, thinking. “They always made it sound like the Greek camp was lazy and unprepared.” He frowned, “Sounds like y’all were just kinder.”
Mrs. Wagner’s smile was sympathetic, “I think you’d enjoy it there much more than whatever they do at Camp Jupiter.”
“It sounds inhumane and worthy of a lawsuit.” Mr. Wagner chimed in.
“I’m just glad you’re done there. And now you get a normal ass life. For once.” Grace quickly flipped the subject, giving her parents a glance, “And you never have to worry about that shit ever again.”
—————
The house was large, three stories, two levels of balconies, jutting up against a private beach in a community of other opulent beach houses. They’d baked on towels in the sun and read, went swimming. Made sandwiches and ate them sitting in the sand. Her dad showed him the best technique for grilling a steak. They played goofy board games, explored the little beach town’s shops and brunch spots. And slowly, piece by piece, day by day, Grace watched the cement walls around Dex chip and fall away, the brightness coming back to his eyes.
It was dark. The only light coming from the moon in the clear, starry sky; Reflecting off of the slow waves lapping at the shore. Finally, he’d cracked under the weight of it all. Dex was curled up on an adirondack chair, knees pulled up to his chest, crying.
Grace was in a matching chair beside him, leaning over hers to keep a steady hand on his arm. There was something deep and broken in the way the sobs heaved out of him.
“I don’t even—How am I supposed to—” He tried to put together an entire sentence, “It’s like there’s nothing there. I feel so—” His breath caught on the corner of another sob, “Empty.”
“You’ve been in survival mode for years,” Grace shook her head, “You haven’t had the time to feel or process, like, anything. You’re not empty. You just need rest.”
“How? How am I supposed to rest when my whole life it’s felt like there’s someone stepping on my neck?” He sniffled, “I’m never getting another job. I’m never going to be me.” There was a certain sort of levity in his words. Something Grace knew she wouldn’t understand. “I fucked it all up. I’m just going to be another name on a BuzzFeed list of trainwreck child stars or whatever the fuck.”
“No.” Her voice was strong, definitive, “The system failed you.” It was a stunning realization: even after all this time, Dex still wanted to please everyone. “No one’s relying on you. No one’s watching your every move. You’re free, Dex.”
That brought him pause. Like it was a revelation. He was staring at the ocean, tears still falling down his face, “I feel like I’m going crazy.” The sobs had lessened, his shoulders less tense, “It’s like I look out at the future and it’s just…blank white space. I don’t even know who I am. All I know is who they molded me to be.”
She didn’t know if that meant Hollywood, or Camp Jupiter, or maybe it was a mix of both. “Well, now you have the chance to figure it out.”
“I’m scared.” He finally admitted, softly. Dex turned to her, eyes full of tears, “I miss my Dad.”
She remembered the night he was shipped off to camp too well. Dex had begged her to come over, absolutely freaking out on the phone. His Dad said she could help him pack. There was a lot of screaming (mostly Dex), and tears (mostly Dex, but she did spot his Dad out the window, quietly crying on the patio as she helped Dex throw things into suitcases). The memories of that night still chilled her to the bone. “Have you tried reaching out to him at all?”
He shook his head, “I can’t.” It looked like he was holding back another sob, or a confession. “He tried to come and take me home. Back at the beginning. I think he got worried that I wasn’t answering his calls.”
Grace’s face fell. “Dex…”
“I know.” The held back sob sneaked out as a half sort of hiccup. Dex hugged his knees closer, “Since I wasn’t with him, he couldn’t find his way to Camp Jupiter again. And I told him…” He sucked in a breath, like it hurt, “Whatever hell I was going to endure there would be better than dealing with him.”
Grace realized she had been holding her breath. “And that was it?”
He nodded, wiping the tears from his face. “I worked with my accountant, I officially have all my money. And I’m nineteen, so…” Dex shrugged, voice small, “I’m on my own, I guess.”
Her hand hadn’t left his arm the entire time. Grace squeezed it and shook her head, definitive; A promise,
“You have me.”

Customising Your Ground Floor Extension for Sydney Family Living
For many homeowners in Sydney, expanding living spaces to suit family needs is a priority. Whether it’s a growing family, a desire for more functional living areas, or simply enhancing the home’s value, ground floor extensions in Sydney have become a popular option. As housing prices in Sydney soar, more homeowners are choosing to extend rather than relocate.
A well-planned ground floor extension can bring significant benefits, including more space, improved flow, and modern aesthetics. But with the right customisation, it can also be designed specifically for family living, catering to the unique needs of your household.
In this guide, we will explore the various ways you can customise ground floor extensions in Sydney to perfectly suit your family’s lifestyle. We’ll cover key considerations, potential layouts, and design elements that can turn an extension into the heart of your home.
1. Understanding the Benefits of Ground Floor Extensions
Before diving into the customisation process, it's important to understand the fundamental advantages of ground floor extensions in Sydney. These include:
Increased Living Space: Expanding the ground floor gives you the opportunity to create more space for your family without changing the footprint of your home significantly.
Improved Layout and Flow: Extensions provide a chance to redesign how your family moves through and uses the home, improving connectivity between rooms.
Higher Property Value: In a competitive housing market like Sydney, adding functional space can increase your property’s value and appeal.
Adaptability for Growing Families: If your family is expanding, a ground floor extension is a flexible way to accommodate changing needs without the hassle of moving.
2. Planning for Family Needs
When designing ground floor extensions in Sydney, one of the first steps is assessing what your family requires from the space. Consider how your family uses the current layout and what improvements would benefit your everyday living.
Additional Bedrooms: Many families opt to add bedrooms on the ground floor to cater to guests, teenagers who want independence, or elderly family members who prefer not to navigate stairs.
Open-Plan Living: Families often favour open-plan designs to create a central hub where everyone can gather, whether it’s for cooking, dining, or relaxing together.
Dedicated Spaces for Children: Including a playroom or study space for children can make your extension family-friendly and future-proof.
Home Office Space: With more people working remotely, incorporating a dedicated home office can be a smart choice.
3. Customising for Open-Plan Living
One of the most popular trends in ground floor extensions in Sydney is the move towards open-plan living. By removing internal walls and creating a fluid connection between the kitchen, dining, and living areas, you can encourage more interaction between family members.
Unified Family Space: Open-plan layouts allow parents to keep an eye on children while cooking or working. It’s also great for hosting family gatherings, with everyone connected in one large, cohesive space.
Natural Light: Large windows, skylights, and glass doors in an open-plan design can make the space feel light, airy, and more inviting, which is essential in Sydney’s warm climate.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow: Ground floor extensions often lead to outdoor spaces. Using bi-fold or sliding glass doors, you can create a seamless transition between your indoor and outdoor living areas, perfect for Sydney’s love of outdoor entertaining.
4. Adding a Kitchen Extension
For many families, the kitchen is the heart of the home, and ground floor extensions in Sydney are an excellent opportunity to create a dream kitchen.
Island Bench: A large kitchen island is a practical addition, providing extra workspace, storage, and a casual dining area for quick family meals.
Butler’s Pantry: If space allows, a butler’s pantry can keep the main kitchen clutter-free and add storage for those with large families.
Custom Cabinetry: Tailor your storage solutions to your family’s needs with custom cabinetry, ensuring there’s a place for everything.
5. Creating Family-Friendly Bathrooms
Ground floor extensions in Sydney often include bathroom upgrades. Customising these to suit a family’s needs can greatly enhance the functionality of the home.
Double Vanities: In a family bathroom, installing double sinks can prevent morning queues and streamline busy routines.
Separate Shower and Bath: Having both a shower and bathtub accommodates everyone, from quick morning showers to children’s bath time.
Ample Storage: Ensure the bathroom has plenty of storage for toiletries, towels, and children’s toys to keep the space tidy and functional.
6. Maximising Outdoor Living
Sydney families love outdoor living, and a ground floor extension should capitalise on this. Integrating an outdoor area that complements your home’s interior is key to creating a harmonious living space.
Covered Alfresco Area: A covered deck or patio allows for year-round outdoor living, no matter the weather.
Outdoor Kitchen or BBQ Area: For families that love entertaining, adding an outdoor kitchen or BBQ area can elevate your backyard into a multifunctional space.
Child-Friendly Garden: If you have young children, designing a secure garden space with soft grass, play equipment, or a sandbox can be an ideal addition.
7. Storage Solutions
Customising storage is one of the most practical ways to ensure ground floor extensions in Sydney are suitable for family living.
Built-In Wardrobes: Built-in storage in bedrooms and hallways can reduce clutter and keep toys, clothes, and personal items organised.
Mudroom: For active families, a mudroom near the entryway is perfect for storing shoes, school bags, and sports gear, helping to keep the rest of the home clean and organised.
Laundry Room: A functional laundry area with ample storage and bench space is essential for a family home.
8. Choosing the Right Materials for Durability
When planning ground floor extensions in Sydney, it’s essential to select materials that not only look great but also stand up to the demands of family life. Here are some family-friendly materials to consider:
Durable Flooring: Opt for hardwearing, easy-to-clean flooring materials such as tiles, hardwood, or laminate. These will withstand spills, heavy foot traffic, and the occasional dropped toy.
Stain-Resistant Fabrics: If you’re planning on extending the living or dining area, consider upholstery that’s stain-resistant, making it easier to manage spills and messes.
Low-Maintenance Surfaces: Quartz countertops, for example, are highly durable and require little maintenance, making them perfect for busy family kitchens.
9. Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
Customising your ground floor extension for family living should include a focus on energy efficiency and sustainability, both of which can help reduce household bills and have a positive impact on the environment.
Insulation: Ensure your extension is well-insulated to maintain comfortable temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs.
Solar Power: Installing solar panels can reduce your energy costs while making your home more eco-friendly.
Water Efficiency: Install low-flow fixtures and rainwater tanks to improve water efficiency, an important consideration in drought-prone Sydney.
Conclusion
Ground floor extensions Sydney offer the perfect opportunity to create a custom living space designed specifically for your family’s needs. By focusing on functionality, flow, and family-friendly features, you can transform your home into a space that works for every member of your household. Whether it’s an open-plan living area, a luxurious new kitchen, or a seamless indoor-outdoor connection, customising your extension will not only improve your family’s quality of life but also add long-term value to your home.
