Grieving. 💔❤️‍🩹
People say grief is something to get over, but as someone who grieves many different types of loss currently in my life, there is no "getting over it."
It's not a linear thing. You don't go through the five stages once and then you're done. It's a lasting ache, that will be less noticeable as time goes on but is never not present. There are days where it will come back up.
For me, it's coming up again. The anniversary of my mom's death is on Monday. (I'm posting this Friday, Aug 16 for reference.) It's hard not to notice, even after 22 years, because it felt like my body remembered it regardless of what I tried to do to distract myself.
So I wanted to draw some sort of comfort pose for G-Force... But I feel like Genya can identify with the grief that comes with death, and with the abandonment issues that drove him into survival. So I wanted for him to be the one comforted...
And Gideon would 💯 cry with him.

"Heaven Is Where You Are."
A Genya Shinazugawa x OC One-Shot.
A/n: a fun little side tangent based on a theory I made up about Gideon. This *isn't* what will happen in the main fic, but is a fun little au.
CW: MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH SPOILERS FOR DEMON SLAYER.
Word count: 1,636
Tumblr media
“Genya…”
“Genya wake up…”
The gentle, familiar voice wafts into Genya's mind. He's in an area of the unconscious, a place between sleep and wakefulness. Everything is a comforting dark behind his closed eyes… There is no pain here.
“Wake up, darling…”
The voice again… what had Genya been doing… before this? Was everything previous… a nightmare? His memory is fuzzy. He's so tired…
But he peers his eyes open… and he's in a forest.
And… it's so strangely familiar. But then he realizes why. He's… seen this forest before but not in *person.*
He's seen it in the eyes of his lover.
“...Gideon?” He asks, dazed. Sitting up carefully he realizes there is no pain in his body… no dull aching, no cuts… he felt *light.* He looked around, getting his bearings. And then he saw Gideon knelt next to him.
The silver haired man cocks his head and smiles at him softly. “Hello my love…” he coos. Somehow… it's even more gentle, more clear than Genya ever realized. Perhaps *this* was a dream.
“Do you remember anything that happened before you rested?” The silver haired man inquired.
Genya hummed, searching the ground as if trying to find a physical part of that answer and he comes up empty. He doesn't remember what happened. So he shakes his head softly. “No… I don't. Why?”
“...It's for the best that you don't remember all of that, love.” He takes his hands gently into his own. They are impossibly soft, warm… Genya gazes into his eyes… the tranquil forests. They were his…
“Genya, my beloved. You've passed away.”
The forests were *Gideon's realm…* Genya soon realizes several things quickly, but Gideon quickly rests a healing hand on his chest to calm him. A gift of angels, that he could use here as he helps his lover cope.
The things he realizes then sort themselves out in a less panicked order.
Genya Shinazugawa had died in battle… He remembered Sanemi being there. Remembered telling him that he should live a happy life, as his final wish to him.
Gideon, who had come into the fray to assist Genya and Muichiro, also appeared to have died with his comrades. However… it was always Gideon’s destiny to do so. He realized it days after falling in love with Genya on Earth… that one day, he would die just before Genya would…
Because Gideon was a fated angel. A deliverer. He was sent to eventually bring Genya to final judgement… to help him enter into the afterlife.
Gideon slowly starts to reveal a truer form of himself. He keeps the parts that Genya fell in love with, but glows with happiness, and four large angel wings make themselves present from his back. His eyes embody the forest around them even moreso… and Genya feels safe.
“Everything will be alright,” Gideon assures Genya, helping him rise to his feet with no effort at all. “You'll find that in the afterlife, time ceases to exist. You'll see your loved ones soon, as if you all arrived at the same time.”
Genya's human soul processes everything… and he smiles with sparkling tears in his eyes.
“I can be with my family again?”
Gideon smiles, blinking slowly as he nods affirmatively. “Your mother, and all your siblings. You'll be able to see them. And… and I'll be with you as well, Genya. If you'd like for me to stay, I will stay with you.”
Genya hugs him, sobbing happily. “Of course I want you to stay!!”
Gideon glows even more, hugging him back and exuding his happiness through his lover. “I’m glad… now come on. Let's go see everyone.”
Without letting go of Genya, Gideon is able to flick his wrist and open a portal of sorts. He carries Genya through it… and within moments they are in the courtyard of heaven proper.
So many people are in the courtyard of light, being reunited with loved ones. Genya's entire family is nearby, including Sanemi who had just been delivered as well.
Gideon smiles at Sanemi and gestures to Genya, who immediately runs to his family members, embracing Sanemi first and the hardest as they both cry and laugh. Gideon had been waiting to see this moment… it made everything better, more complete for the souls who had to sacrifice so much in their earthly life. In his time there, he'd gained empathy and he felt it bloom so fully that he couldn't resist happy tears flowing from his cheeks.
Everything was blissful. As it should be. Genya was with all of his dearest loved ones, and his friends were also nearby. Gideon was certain they'd make their rounds.
But as this was going on… another angel approaches Gideon. He leans over, eyes locked onto Genya.
“...Why did you bring a demon here…?”
Gideon doesn't waver. “Genya is not a demon.”
“Fool. I can smell the unconditional love clouding your judgement for him. He was corrupted… we cannot allow that here, it will spread.”
Gideon turns to face the angel. He's taller, and of higher stature. Closer to God, but not empathetic to the human condition. Gideon’s mirthful appearance ceases as he gives the taller being a stern look.
“With all due respect, I think you should leave the final judgement up to *God,* Seraph. Genya was devout in his waking life. He *has a place here.*”
The taller angel sighs. “As you wish, deathling.”
“It's *Gideon.*”
“Whatever.” He claps his hands once, sending only Genya, Gideon and himself to another realm of Heaven. An unknown part to Gideon… and he carefully goes to gather up Genya into his arms.
The newcomer is panicked. “Wh-whats happening now?”
Gideon soothes him, strokes down his back, a soft song to his consciousness. “It's alright love. Everyone is judged by God before they enter heaven.”
Genya trembles, because he senses Seraph but can't see him. He's so far apart from humanity that he can't even be perceived by human souls at a face level.
As God makes himself into an entity, the room is filled with a calm. He smiles to his angels and to Genya, and the two angels bow. Genya also bows, kneeling.
“...Seraph… why have you summoned me to this deliverer and his fated soul?”
“The deliverer Gideon wishes to make the argument for a *demon* to enter heaven, your grace.”
“...My child Genya is not a Demon… but he does possess the dark marks of one. Gideon?”
“He ate demons, in order to fight them. Dearest father… please, Genya has prayed every day, he's a gentle, kind soul and does not deserve to be in the place where the demons continuously devour one another alive…”
“...My angel… he cannot enter. He is a devourer.”
“I-”
“Gideon. I made you to be a compassionate, loving deliverer of souls. It aids them into the afterlife to be familiar with their deliverer… but you have fallen in love with him.”
Gideon holds Genya close, as if shielding him. “I won't…”
“Do not defy me, Gideon.”
He already knew he would. Gideon had taken a branched path from God's plan… he was never intended to fall in love with Genya. He was meant to deliver him after the final fight, and to be able to part with him at judgement…
Such angels who do this are out of alignment with God, no matter how pure their intentions. Lucifer was one such angel as well…
“...Genya does not deserve hell!”
God is silent…
“Why can't you see the good in your child?! Why is there even a judgement?!”
“Gideon. You’ve defied me.”
“If he goes to hell *I go too!*”
“Gideon *no!”* Genya tries to shout from his protective hold. “You don't deserve that!! Repent! I'll… I'll go! I knew it was a possibility… I'm ready to accept it. Please…”
Gideon looks to Genya with a loving defiance in his eyes. “Where you go, I go. I’ll hold you above the flames if I must.”
God opens a portal into a dark realm.
“Let him say goodbye to his family!!” Gideon snarls.
But Seraph throws them both into the dark hole… and it closes behind them..
For several minutes… Gideon clings to Genya, not letting him go in the void. “I'm here… I'm here. It's going to be okay. I promise you.”
“Gideon you've damned yourself for my sake!!”
“You've always been worth it.”
Genya weeps. Gideon does too, and in the dark there was only them for a long while.
Time in the afterlife stops. The inevitable always happens as it should… but the two are not sent to hell. They have, instead… been banished to purgatory.
Which is where Gideon's forests existed.
The trees become visible as if a wish were coming true. The golden light on the leaves filters through and Gideon looks to Genya. He feels heavier… like he did back on earth. The pull of gravity on a human soul.
Gideon had fallen. His wings would no longer fly. He could no longer access the portal to heaven. While this wasn't hell, it was still banishment. But Gideon was grateful that Genya would not burn…
“I'm so sorry Genya… I wish… they could have seen reason. You deserve heaven…”
Genya shakes his head still sobbing. “No *you* deserve heaven!! You're an angel, you didn't deserve to fall for my sake!”
He gently cups Genya's face. His hands are still warm. He can still comfort Genya… though he was fallen, he was still a angel.
“I'd fall in a million lifetimes for you, Genya.”
He pulls him close, and Genya clutches him, hiding his face. Gideon continues to speak softly to him.
“I love you. Anywhere with you is home. We can make this our heaven… I'd rather be nowhere with you, than somewhere without you.”

King of Death!Gideon Azulyss
I haven't talked about very many of my AUs on here, but this is one of my favorites.
I love the idea that Gideon always embodies some sort of 'death' symbolism in the stories he's in. I've played with ideas and written a shorter one-shot about him being Genya's reaper. So when I started world building with a friend after being *way* too excited about Epic, I knew I wanted for him to eventually be a nod to Hades/the Hades equivalent.
I talk more below lol. Just thought it was getting long-
The butterfly in his hand is significant in more than one way. He's normally scared of butterflies because in his nightmares, his loved ones are devoured by hoards of black butterflies. He's convinced that they can not only eat people but trap their souls, being able to literally reap them from bodies by their probosci. Lol.
However, butterflies have a lot of symbolism regarding the afterlife and are sometimes theorized to be able to go between realms. They are often regarded by people as visitors of passed on souls. So the black butterfly eventually becomes a companion for Gideon, helping him get over his fear and eventually accept his upcoming role as King of the dead.
Anyhoosers.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk lol

The Demons We Face | Chapter 20: Risk
Tumblr media
Preview:
Gently, he pulls Genya closer and touches his forehead to his. “You're the love of my life, Genya. Please … believe me when I say I was doing everything I could to ensure we both made it out alive.”
Genya sniffles. “You took some dumb risks though, now you don't have your hammer.”
Gideon smiles despite the tears streaking his cheeks. “It was my hammer or you. I'd pick you every time.”
Genya huffs through his tears. “You're such an idiot.” He leans in to claim a kiss, urgent and laced with every emotion the boy in his arms put him through. Gideon hung on, reciprocating it as if absorbing everything.
Gideon wakes up, blinking and quickly discovering that his vision is being blocked by fabric. A small bit of panic rises in his chest as he reaches to try to tug free of it, but his hand is being held.
Intertwined and familiar. Genya is in the wagon with him. The mohawked boy is also blindfolded, so as he senses Gideon stirring, he speaks.
“You're safe, love. We need to keep the blindfolds on.”
Gideon relaxes but only slightly. He has so many questions. “...Why are we blindfolded?” He asks Genya.
“We are being taken to the swordsmiths village. No one knows where it is. It's a top secret location. So the Kakushi swap off charge of the wagon along the path and we aren't allowed to see where we are going.”
“Ah. Okay.”
He realizes that they're probably going because of Gideon’s broken hammer. He would certainly be scolded by the swordsmith who forged it for him. He'd been scolded several times prior for his breaking of katanas, and this is the first time he's ever had the hammer break on him. After all of the “let's see you break this!” jests… he ended up breaking this too.
Gideon clutches Genya's hand a bit more tightly, wanting his boyfriend's silent comfort. Genya squeezes back, and leans down from where he sits. Gideon realizes suddenly that he is halfway in Genya's lap, probably to aid with the bumps in the road and not to jostle him too much.
“Are you alright?” Genya asks him.
Gideon reaches a hand up gently to touch Genya's face above him. He smiles, even though he knows Genya can't see it.
“I'll be okay. I'm glad you're with me.” He says deftly.
Genya smiles, Gideon can feel his cheek muscles scrunch with the action. He wants badly to lean down and kiss him… but he's certain the Kakushi are watching. He already refused to be carried separately, insisting on being in the wagon with Gideon because he was worried and volunteering to hold him steady during the ride. None of this *had* to be done. If it were anyone else, Genya would be hard pressed to volunteer. But it's him. His lover who fought so bravely with him… who took risks to give him the advantage in the fight.
He hated that Gideon got cut so deeply. That his hammer broke because Genya had missed his mark and the wolf had come for him.
They are silent for a little while. Genya thinks back to the conversation Gideon had with him… about leaving the demon slayer corps. He thinks of what a life with him would look like. They'd face many challenges as a gay couple, but… to be able to come home to him from whatever they would do to live… seemed blissful in a way.
They could make a life together. They could tackle anything life would throw at them. They could slay demons easily should they ever darken their steps… they could go to the lavender fields and breathe deeply knowing they belonged to each other and they'd be okay.
He can picture Gideon cooking in the kitchen, perhaps accidentally burning something in the oven. He'd love it if they could get a dog to throw a ball for… he'd never had a dog.
He'd never had a lot of things.
“...What are you thinking about up there?~” Gideon asks.
Genya smiles. “Is it that obvious that I was in thought?”
Gideon smiles. “To me, yeah. Your breathing changes when you're ruminating. And you sit perfectly still.”
Genya blushes a little. He knows him all too well.
“...I was thinking about the future.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah. Maybe…” he pauses. “...maybe you and I could talk once we are settled at the village. Once more about what you suggested, at the butterfly estate.”
Gideon’s heart races in his injured chest. He wants to talk now, wants to oppose it, and to remind Genya of why he wanted to stay in the first place. But a part of him he just couldn't ignore… wanted that with him. Wanted to have a life that the two of them could build together… away from the corps. He gives a little nod.
“Okay. We can talk about it.”
A few moments pass. Genya shifts so that he's reclining a bit more comfortably and carefully wraps an arm across Gideons collarbone. He wants to be careful of his injury, and subtly just wants to touch him more and get away with it.
“...What do you think is out there, that we can't see right now?”
Gideon smirks. “Oh, definitely nudist colonies. They're protecting our innocence. Doing us a favor. Just imagine Genya. All the boobs you're missing out on seeing right now.”
One of the Kakushi snorts a laugh. Gideon now knows they’re near enough to have heard them. Genya lightly baps his face. “There are no naked people Gideon!”
“But how do you know? Hm? Even if the Kakushi deny it there's always the possibility that they are lying to protect you.”
The Kakushi who snorted before decides to play along. “Oh, there are definitely naked people in the field. But you still can't look. And we've paid them all to be completely silent.”
“No you didn't! Oh my gosh don't encourage him like this!” He says this amidst laughter, grinning and obviously highly amused.
“Genya I think you should shout for one of them to confirm. Say you'll pay double.”
“No!! There are no naked people in the field Gideon!”
The wagon eases to a stop. The Kakushi shuffle around, passing the wagon off to the next group. Gideon lets the joke go, but loves the fading feeling of Genya stifling a laugh as he still thinks back to it. It's infectious and makes him giggle as well.
He wants to be at the location, and settled. Wants to be able to steal Genya away just to tell him how much he loves him. How much he adores every little thing the man does.
They reach the swordsmith village about an hour later.
Permitted to remove their blindfolds, the two boys look around. It's a lovely little village tucked into a rocky mountainous area. All of the villagers are wearing some sort of mask on their face that looks like a whistling pink man, and most also conceal their hair.
Gideon's swordsmith approaches the wagon as it's stopped.
“...I didn't think it was possible, but you did it anyway. Hopeless.” He shakes his masked head. Honestly, he isn't harsh on Gideon and his tone is more teasing, which makes Gideon feel comfortable amidst his ever mounting guilt that he broke so many of this poor man's weapons.
“In my defense… technically I didn't break this one. The thing I was fighting did. I wasn't even holding it so-”
The older man ignores Gideon as he lifts the severed hammer pieces. “...It broke at the handle, which to be fair is the weakest part of the hammer. I'll need a few days to fix it fully, and to reinforce it so it doesn't break during your very next fight.”
“Thank you Tamaki. Love yoouuu.”
“If you love me, stop breaking everything I hand you.”
“...You're the best mister Tamaki.”
Tamaki simply walks away at that point not responding anymore. He was a stern older man but he didn't see the need in scolding Gideon relentlessly. To him, Gideon was a well meaning demon slayer just like any of the others.
Gideon groans a little and looks to Genya with puppy eyes. “He's mad at me.”
Genya huffed a small laugh, smiling down at him. “It could be worse. You could have someone like Mr. Haganezuka. That dude literally goes out for blood if his swords get broken.”
Genya's swordsmith visits with him as well, and he hands over his wakizashi. It's taken to hone and restore, since there were a couple of knicks in the blade.
Finally, they are taken to a medical facility in the town so that Gideon's wounds could be assessed and so Genya could be looked over more thoroughly. While they are there, another of the town’s smiths delivers a temporary katana to Gideon just in case. No slayer should be anywhere unarmed, after all.
Everything settles down. Gideon is given stitches for his deeper cuts, and re-bandaged. He's given something for the pain so he can rest easy as well. Genya is assessed fully and allowed to go, but stays with Gideon until he is released.
They get settled in the lodging place prepared for them. As soon as they have a moment to breathe by themselves, Gideon pulls Genya in to hold him close. Genya's arms instantly wrap around Gideon and he tries to refrain from squeezing.
But everything is catching up to Genya.
He doesn't move for a second. He trembled, trying to hold in tears and failing. He doesn't want Gideon to see him cry like this. But he was so scared…
“I could have lost you last night,” he manages. Pulling back he looks Gideon in the face and the silver haired boy looks back at him. The instant Gideon sees Genya's upset face his own shatters like glass too.
“I know, I … I know. I'm so sorry…”
Genya grits his teeth. “Sorry won't bring you back from the dead, Gideon! Why did you engage the wolf?” He chokes back a sob. He of all people knows the weight of loved ones dying.
Genya’s voice may have dipped into a harsher one, but his hands remained firm and careful as they reached for Gideons face.
“I can't fucking lose you. Wh-when it comes to fights, trust that I can also hold my own…! I can heal, my parts can regenerate with my abilities, yours can't!”
“Genya I… I just didn't want it to- it was so fast! Terrifyingly fast! You didn't see it kill that poor guy like it was nothing to do so!”
Gideon puts his hands overtop of Genya's. “I can't lose you either! I'd… never fucking forgive myself if I could have stopped it but didn't. Regeneration or not you have limits too!”
Genya breaks the kiss, and looks into Gideon's now almost starry eyes. He simply stares for a moment and so does Gideon… and then Genya reaches to gently wipe a tear away.
“...When we are able to leave this village… you and I. Let's… let's just go. Okay? Let's go see the lavender fields together. After that, who knows? Maybe… we could just …”
Gideon takes his hand and kisses his fingers softly. “...We can go to the lavender fields, love. We can talk things out after, too. But… I know you don't want to leave the corps. There are deeper reasons you've fought so hard to stay here.” He reaches up to return the favor of gently wiping tears away.
Gideon offers him a gentle smile. “I love you. So much. I'm by your side in all things. I'll… get better at fighting, I promise. I won't have you continue to worry about me. We can train together, and work on our strengths.”
Genya leans in for another kiss, softer and shorter.
“I love you too, Gideon.”
There's a short pause, Genya smiles at him warmly.
“And that's exactly why… we should retire together.”
