Thess vs TLOVM S3, Ep 5
The way I figure it, if I watch ep 5 tonight, I can have ep 6 day after tomorrow, which is the Wednesday, and then I have three new episodes ready for the following few days. So here we go.
Ooh, flashback time. Who's the dwarf?
Drake Thunderbrand is the dwarf, voiced by ... Matt Mercer, who always seems to feel that there is insufficient dwarf love.
So ... Kima and Allura was part enemies-to-lovers, part "Both of them are tsundere as fuck; how did this happen?" ...Okay.
They did fascinating things with the chimera, the animation team.
.........And in that moment, Allura was basically ... every thirsty person-who-loves-women on Tumblr who sees a buff and badass woman who they all want to step on them.
Yeah, Kima, took the words right out of the audience's collective mouth.
As an aside ... I like that the script made room for what was effectively background colour. Like, when they were streamlining the scripts to make that hundreds of hours of D&D session into a TV series, they seem to have made it a point to not only keep the NPCs that might be somewhat necessary in the background, but also give those NPCs a little time in the spotlight, not to mention having their stories be narratively important to what's going on with the main cast. Mostly I just have the warm fuzzies for Matt because I know what it is to love one's NPCs and seeing those bits he threw in to make the world feel more alive taking centre stage even for a few minutes is testament to the small parts of that story that were only him.
Wait. Does tundra have tumbleweeds?!? ...Not that Google tells me, but fuck it; it's a fantasy realm. They can have tumbleweeds if they want them.
Allura ... you are very right. However, I know how much you like being right, and if you want to continue to be right, you might want to ease up. But you're way more interested in dismembering a dragon with your bare hands than you are in being right about the Perc'halia ship anyway, so...
"I daresay better than us." ...Sooooooo both Vessar twins are prone to foot-in-mouth while being bleak about their own predicaments. Charming.
"Maybe don't mock the murder-man"? That ... actually reminds me that Vicious Mockery hasn't been used once this whole time. Which is kind of a shame because Scanlan had several kills with it in the actual campaign. But it's irony that the wielder of Vicious Mockery is asking for Grog to ... not.
I wonder how much of Allura's being pissed is about the dragon, and how much is about having misjudged Dohla so badly. ...Like with the chimera, Kima was right - only this time she was right in her concern about Dohla, and Allura was ... Allura about it. Which I guess explains the rashness. Still...
Oh. Shit. Wait. It took two to open that portal, and Dohla's dead. Sooooooo how the fuck are they going to get back?!?
Ooooooh shit. C'mon, guys! White dragons aren't supposed to be that tactical!
Oh. Ooooooooooooh. Is this where we're going to get Matt's personal experience with True Love's Crit?
Or ... not quite. Still, that was awesome.
Allura ... you are being the biggest annoyance.
Ooooooookay but you are forgiven-- OW.
"Fuck it; let's get weird." Is it ... wrong that I just love it when the damn-near-Artificer says that shit?
Well, if that's the result? No. No, it is not wrong.
Okay, yes, you're both okay, now start opening the bloody portal and save the argument for later!
"Right, right; impending doom". Heeeeeeeeeeee.
Ooooooh this is going to be interesting even before Yenk meets Vorugal.
The new shiny!
"I don't wanna die bald!" BWAAAHAHAHA!
Ooooooooooooooh here we go!
Oh, Grog ... that should honestly be a Tumblr poll. I figure Tumblr's demographic includes monster-on-monster monsterfucking and not just ... them-on-monster monsterfucking.
WHOA now I just wait for Grog to accuse Yenk of stealing his signature move.
"Cram it, de Rolo; I'm having a day!" I'm stealing that.
Grog, you are now echoing damn near every reaction YouTuber I've seen watch this series. (Which is like, two, but they're good ones. Omn1 is adorable and I want to hug him. Just FYI.)
No, Grog ... white dragons fight like ... well, like you fight.
"Where the belligerent fuck is she going?!?" ...Stealing that one too.
Veeeeeeex, what have you got up your sleeve now?!?
Oh. Oooooooooooooooooooh hoooooooooly SHIIIIIIIIIIT that was epic.
Vex, starting to rethink things a little? Hmmm?
Percy, I have no idea where you got emotional intelligence, but ... keep doing that. That's good.
So ... wait, instead of "the arrows are totally flirting", he's going to either see to the making of that bitching new armour she got from Vorugal's hide or maybe even make it himself?!? SQUEEEEEEE!
(Look, stuff like that is how I express affection, so hey.)
Thordak ... Ripley?!? Hoboy.
The magnificent mansion!
Doors. Again. Hee. Sometimes they are useful.
The best thing about that cliffhanger is ... well, partly that it's entirely non-threatening, but also because the reactions will be divided into three groups: those who don't know D&D at all, and are wondering what the fuck; people who know D&D a bit but not Critical Role, and are wondering what Scanlan would make a magnificent mansion look like; and Critters, who are wondering if they get Kima, in a training room, with chicken.
Gods. Back to work tomorrow and I am not ready.

2, 4, and 6 for the CR Ask Meme!
2: Favorite unhinged shopkeeper.
He's a bit more straitlaced than most unhinged shopkeepers, but I'd say Abjurist Noja. What makes him unhinged is that he agreed to fight Umbrasyl with Vox Machina despite apparently being only a level 6 wizard!
4: Minor character you are (correctly) obsessed with.
Drake Thunderbrand! Allura's best friend and the only other surviving member of their party that fought Thordak besides Kima. He's got that really cool Travel via Spark spell, and is apparently good at alchemy, his potions of fire resistance were instrumental in Vox Machina's fight with Thordak. He also fought alongside the Daxio Outriders during the Siege of Emon!
6: NPC you would most like to see as the subject of a Tales of Exandria series.
I really want one about Gilmore! I'd love to see what caused the falling out he had with his parents and what brought him to Emon to set up his shop.

So it’s half grounded in canon that the Stupid Wizard Club of Exandria (Yussa Errenis, Eskil Ryndarien, you name it) turns to their designated big sister Allura Vysoren when something goes wrong. And of course Allie sighs and rubs her temples and then goes and helps her dumb-ass little (200+-year-old) siblings.
But whose doorstep does Allura show up on when something goes terribly wrong for her? Who is Allie’s “emergency contact” for when she accidentally traps herself in an extraplanar mage killer maze? Personally, my money is on Drake Thunderbrand who is called to either clean up Allura’s mess, or help clean up other messes when it’s too much for Allura alone to handle.
So Allura gets, like, ALL the wizard grief, but then Drake gets only the Allura Vysoren-selected Premium Wizard Grief; and I just enjoy the picture of Allura showing up at Drake’s place at like 2 A.M. with a clearly fucked-up Yussa, arm thrown around her shoulders, struggling to stand up, and Drake’s just like, absolutely not, Allie.

So this means that Yussa was one of Allura and Drake's own merry band of chucklefucks who took down Thordak the first time around, and had who knows what other adventures before ever meeting Vox Machina, let alone the Mighty Nein.

did we have canon for allura's age in campaign one, does anyone remember?
because i would have expected her to be in her sixties by now, but matt said fifties, so let's play this out
this campaign started in 835PD, it's probably 836 by now
campaign one ended in 812, the chroma conclave stuff was a year before that, so 811, allura mentioned then that they sealed thordak (and were their adventuring party in general), 15 years prior.
796PD.
if allura's in her fifties, was she a teenager when they sealed thordak? she must have been, right? even if you don't believe it was a full 15 years before and they were just rounding up, 'fifties' could easily put her on the young side and have her still have been a teenager just 35 years ago
which, really puts things in perspective, because like, keyleth and percy were young for the group, but at least they were still like, 22-23 while battling dragons
not school age
she's barely older than the twins (who would have been 12 at the time, and vex is 51-52 now)
is kima that young too? are they the same age? were they dragon fighting teens together?
and most importantly, how about the rest of their group? because i see two possibilities here, one is that allura and her friends were the kind of adventuring group found in YA lit that everyone looks back on as an adult and goes "who let these babies save the world??"
and the other is that drake thunderbrand was of proper adventuring age, but somehow found himself stuck with two rowdy teenage magic wlw who absolutely refused to listen when he said they were too young for this, and they were competent enough, so fuck it, kids, welcome to the group
and either of those possibilities is amazing

quick thing i wrote to cool down a couple nights ago
They didn't have the money or the resources to teleport—"Not yet," Drake insisted, "But I'm working on something." Allura rolled her eyes and whispered to Kima, "He's just trying to invent a flashier version because he hasn't figured out the proper intonation for Teleportation yet."—and so their intrepid band of adventurers spent much of their time walking through the vast uncharted lands of Tal'dorei.
"Adventuring," Dohla declared, with all the flair and panache a high elven barbarian raised in a hut in the mountains could muster (which was not a lot), "is not adventuring at all. It's walking, and occasionally adventuring."
"Wow," Sirus said, with all the sarcasm and dryness that a high elven ranger raised in a hut in the mountains could muster (which was quite a bit).
Dohla made a face at her brother. "I'm just saying! Adventuring is much more boring than I was led to believe."
Which was of course when an arrow flew out of the undergrowth and sunk into Dohla's chest.
"Huh," she said mildly, looking down at it.
"Bandits!" Drake shouted, drawing his wand and flicking it at the trees. A handful of humanoids—all wearing black masks and rough armor—spilled onto the road to avoid his spells.
Kima drew her maul and sprinted for the biggest bandit with the biggest sword. He laughed as she approached, seeing nothing but her short frame and golden hair. He stopped laughing when she bared her teeth in a feral grin and slammed her maul into his face.
"Not so amusing now, am I?" she snipped, pulling the maul back and dropping into a defensive stance.
He spat a globule of blood and saliva at her feet and pointed his sword at her face. "I'm gonna fucking k—"
She stepped forwards to hit him again, but a single bolt of arcane energy slammed into his face and forced the bridge of his nose out the back of his head. Whirling around, Kima jerked a thumbs-up in Allura's direction. "That was really hot!" she shouted.
Allura's cheeks flared bright red. "Thanks."
"Bahamut preserve us," Ghenn said loudly, forked tongue flicking out, "You two are incorrigible." They threw their knife at one of the smaller bandits—probably a goblin or a gnome—and ducked behind a tree.
On the other side of the road, Dohla slipped her brass knuckles—made from the same blue-grey metal as her brother's bow and humming with the energy of a storm—over her fingers and punched the nearest bandit in the face with a crack like thunder. She grinned, unperturbed, as his sword sliced a gash across her forearm.
Several paces away, Ghenn appeared out of nowhere, slipping out of the shadows and slamming their blades into a chink in one of the bandits' armor; at the same time, Sirus' arrow found the bandit's throat with a crackle of lightning.
Near the front, Drake whirled around, fire and lightning shooting from his wand with an unrestrained savagery that he kept tightly leashed off the battlefield. One eye he kept trained on the younger, more reckless members of their party: on Kima and her single-minded ferocity, on Allura and her tendency to forget she wasn't wearing armor, on Ghenn and their flippant threading of the line between rashness and foolishness.
Within seconds, the battle was over. Bodies lay scattered across the road. One or two had been flattened against the trees.
As soon as she was satisfied with the state of the last bandit's head—mushy like gravy left too long over a fire—Kima ran over to Allura and hopped up to tug her braid. "How is your hair still perfect?" she asked, cheeks flushed with adrenaline and eyes shining with adoration.
Allura opened her mouth, but then her eyes dropped to the way the nicks and cuts on her arms were closing up and she smiled instead.
"You two," Drake announced, "need to stop flirting in the middle of— Ghenn, where are you?"
Ghenn popped their head out from behind a bush, copper scales and dark leathers nearly invisible in the undergrowth. "I'm alive!"
Sirus poked his sister with the edge of his bow so that he wouldn't get blood on his new leather gloves. "How was that?" he asked drily, "Enough adventuring for you?"
Dohla looked down at the viscera splashed over her knuckles and all the way up her arms. With a broad grin—her smile a slash of white on the blood-red that covered her face—she declared, "That's not adventuring. That's just a side-effect of walking."

My take on Sirus, Dohla, and Ghenn. Allura’s, Lady Kima’s and Drake Thunderbrand’s other party members.
Obviously, there is very little information about them so everything here is purely what I think would be cool.
Some info about them:
Sirus Crowstar- Half-Elf Sorcerer - Draconic Bloodline Blue
Dohla Vysoren- Human Warlock- Pact of the Chain with Savras God of Divination and Fate
Ghenn Freevale- Half-Elf Cleric- Helm God of Protection
As this is my take on them I decided to make Dohla, Allura’s older Sister. Dohla is very upbeat and is usually the one making the party smile. She enjoys teasing her sister. Her familiar is most of the time some sort of owl.
Ghenn and Sirus knew each other before joining the party.
Still working on more details about them. Hope you all Enjoy!

Allura tells Kiki the party finished what she started, and now I’m getting super emotional about Allura, and Kima, and Drake, and the fact that they finally get some proper fucking closure? This nightmare is over for them now (hopefully). They can rest.

You know what would be a cool way for the animated Briarwoods Arc to end? I want it to end on Allura and Drake Thunderbrand researching the Orb of Death™️ when suddenly Allura feels her magical circles get destroyed in rapid succession. As they talk about something happening in Emon the camera pans over to a ruined city landscape where 3 ancient chromatic dragons are destroying the city. The camera ends on a giant ancient red dragon at the centre of the city. Vox Machina is no where to be seen.

do you ever think about (probably not) whether Drake Thunderbrand and what I can only assume is his father or uncle or grandfather in Kraghammer ever have, like, a conversation about Vox Machina?
where Drake’s like, “they’re good friends of Allura Vysoren, pop, and they’ve faced three ancient dragons in a row”, and Steddos is like, “yeah they’re still fuckwads who interrupted me lunch multiple times is what they are”
