How to clean a clogged toilet

Clogged toilets are not only unsightly, but they can also damage your drain pipes if they persist long enough to cause a significant blockage. Clogs often occur at the top of the curved trap at the bottom of the toilet bowl. You can usually clear them with a plunger. Sometimes the clog is too large to clear the drain or too far down for you to push it out with a plunger. In these cases, you'll need a toilet drill to remove or pull out the material causing the clog.

Turn off the water supply at the valve under the tank and bowl of the toilet.

Flush the toilet if the water level is not above normal. If it is near the top of the bowl, put on rubber gloves and use an old cup or can to scoop some of the water into a bucket.

Insert a toilet plug so that the funnel pushes into the drain hole. A toilet plug is not the same as a sink plug. Toilet plugs have a funnel or neck at the end to seal the drain airtight. A sink plug has a flat bottom and is not ideal for use in a toilet.

Pump the plunger forcefully into the drain hole several times. If the plunger is properly seated in the drain, you should feel some resistance each time you pull up on the handle.

Pull the plunger out of the basin. If the water does not go down the drain, push the toilet again. If the water drains from the bowl, restore the water supply and flush the toilet.

If the toilet drains too slowly, plunger one more time. If the clog persists, it may be further down the drain and you will need to use a toilet auger or snake to clear it.

Insert the hooked end of a toilet drill into the bowl with the tip facing up.

Insert the end of the drill into the drain opening. Turn the handle clockwise and push it through the drain pipe until you feel the blockage.

Crank the handle counterclockwise and pull the drill back about one centimeter. Turn it clockwise again and push it through the clog.

Continue turning the handle clockwise until you get past the clog. Insert the cable into the drain until you reach the end of the auger's line. You will feel the cable make its way up and through the clog.

Turn the handle counterclockwise to pull the auger out of the toilet.

Plunge the toilet into the plunger again, then flush to see if the drain is unclogged.

Insert the auger into the drain two more times if the toilet continues to clog or drain slowly. Dip and flush the toilet after each use of the auger.
