early 2024 was a time when not one but TWO fantasy medias i was enjoying revealed that these dragons were once humans and i wasn’t expecting it, makes it a very special time for me
#a book series & a game#amier rambles#i dont even need to say dd bc most everyone here already knows it but the books… i’ll let them be a mystery bc it was an experience#i Am gonna say tho i was expecting the Elderlings to be dragons#anyways. i love this trope and i never knew it before this year so#Technically i started reading the books in 2023 but that part was in the last book which i read around the time i started playing ddda

me reminding dd players that so much of the worldbuilding and lore is inferred from npc dialogue and their routines and that you really should be paying attention to what anyone and everyone has to say because the series design intentionally wants you to look out for these things rather than just drop it on your lap and that's not necessarily a design flaw that's just their way of storytelling to line up with the game's thesis
#like obviously its ok if you're someone who prefers to read the summaries of it through wiki pages or from lore posts by others#not everyone has time to go through every piece of dialogue#but if u play the game and only stick to the main quest and then complain that there's no worldbuilding that's on you!#i keep reading stuff about how the world was poorly fleshed out and no!!! it wasn't!!!#game plot is mid yes but you gotta read item descs and listen/observe the world around u THAT WAS THE POINT OF THE FIRST GAME#i'd even argue that the plot itself isn't actually that bad narratively but it was just PRESENTED gameplay wise in a very bland way#the thesis of dd is that you need to pay attention to the world because it's your home! and as uncaring as it is there are inhabitants of i#already in dd2 gameplay vids there's massive new lore from item descs and there are certain npcs who introduce new things#dragon's dogma#dd2#dragon's dogma 2

i've been getting into mcr (again) lately and properly listening to danger days and i've been thinking, what if i ran a dnd game set in the desert/zones where danger days takes place after the killjoys are killed and are long gone (are they really, though?) and bl/ind are just getting worse and the people need another group of killjoys to step up
#i feel like there's not enough dd content out there to run a dnd campaing so i'll have to fill in some gaps#but then again i haven't read the comics and i don't know where to read them online#and im broke so i don't wanna have to buy them#but i'll see#im talking as if i have a group to play with jsjdjf#but i wanna do this so bad#mcr#my chemical romance#danger days#the true lives of the fabulous killjoys#dnd#dungeons and dragons#txt#text#personal

How are we defining fantasy author?
Because chronologically for me I think it would be Ruth Stiles Gannett, author of My Father’s Dragon and its sequels.
But this poll is also missing such luminaries and gateway authors as Gail Carson Levine, Eva Ibbotson, Jane Yolen, Patrica C. Wrede, Ursula K. Le Guin, Madeline l’Engle, CS Lewis, Bruce Coville, Sir Terry Pratchett, and tumblr’s own Diane Duane and Neil Gaiman, the majority of whom I was reading in the mushy haze of memory known as “elementary school.”
#T Pierce (also on tumblr at one point) was a big one for me#as was DWJ#and (BIG SIGH) the world’s most famous terf unfortunately#also lol at the idea I waited to be a teen to awkwardly wish I was magic#but my mom read My Father’s Dragon to me#so Ruth Stiles Gannett was definitely first#there’s a somewhat pendantic argument to be made for Seuss tbh#Ibbotson Le Guin Wrede and Levine were all earlier I think#Lewis and DWJ a little after that#L’Engle Yolen Pierce and DD were all roughly third grade#I found Sir Pterry and Neil tragically late#I was already in HIGH SCHOOL

I feel like Steve's non-Upside Down friends definitely have a group chat for all their Steve-based conspiracy theories that's just filled with really off the wall excuses and tidbits that Steve's said - how panicked is the government agent-babysitter about it?
The first-year teachers definitely do, for sure!
The chat was originally called ‘The Steve Harrington Experience’ because every conversation with the man is something else, but they ended up changing it after Kathy pointed out that it made it seem like they all experienced Steve Harrington, ‘Sexually, u know?’
“Yes, Kathy…” Marissa said in an exasperated voice note. She must be driving. “You didn’t need to spell it out. We’re changing it.”
‘Not saying I’d be opposed 2 the experience,’ Kathy added helpfully in the group chat. ‘U see those trousers he wore yesterday. Not much left to the imagination there.’
‘Thank you, Kathy.’
The group chat was changed to the ‘Support Group for David’s Obsession’ which is just, haha. Funny. David is not obsessed with Steve Harrington. He just isn’t.
Sure, nothing about the man makes any sense.
And yeah, maybe David talks about that fact a little too much. Maybe he has asked the group chat probing questions about Christmas lights. Maybe he even made a dentist appointment with Edward Harrington, DDS just to make sure he wasn’t the Eddie Harrington they knew.
He wasn’t obsessed. He was just due for a cleaning.
The other day in the parking lot after work, Steve asked if David could see the license plate number on the white 2015 Mazda CX-3 that was circling the block. David read the number off for him and Steve wrote it down. He didn’t explain anything.
David texted the group chat about it, ‘Maybe he’s a spy?’
‘Do you think spy organizations sent out a lot of epileptic agents with service animals?’
‘Maybe the epilepsy is a cover.’
Kathy replied, ‘It’s not.’
David kinda hates how he only tunes in to the staff meeting about Career Day when Steve mentions that Erica can’t come. Something about pissing off her constituents by favoring a community in a state she doesn’t represent. Yada, yada, yada, “Dustin’s still coming though.”
“Dustin,” David repeats, feeling the amused way that Marissa is looking at him. He can’t even be bothered by Jordan hiding a smile in her hand. “Your brother is coming to Career Day?”
Steve beams, “Yeah, man. He comes every year.”
Kathy was a second-year teacher that was definitely here during last year’s Career Day. She could have mentioned it. David can’t even fully digest this information when Steve knocks his knuckles against the table and snaps his fingers, “Oh! My ex works for the paper. I’ll see if they can come.”
David somehow gets roped into finalizing the rest of the list of speakers for Career Day (i.e. they need to confirm if Steve’s people are going to be there and Cindy didn’t want to do it). When he stops by Steve’s classroom at the end of the day, he is surprised to find that Steve is not alone.
There’s low music playing from the corner of the room now that the students have gone home and Steve is at his desk grading papers. Eddie is standing at the board, drawing a dragon-like creature with dry-erase markers.
Eddie is humming along to the song on the radio, occasionally brushing his fingers along Steve’s shoulders when he reaches for a new color. It’s a cozy moment and he almost hates to interrupt, but David has leftovers in his fridge that he wants to get home to.
He knocks against the doorframe, “Steve, you have a minute?”
“Yeah, what’s up?” Steve asks, leaning back in his chairs far enough that his head brushes against Eddie’s back. “Babe, you remember David from the cookout?”
“The history teacher,” Eddie hums, distracted by his drawing. He erases a line of red from the fangs with his finger. “Stevie’s saying great things about you, kid.”
“I – wow, that’s – thanks! It means a lot! I, uh. I’m finishing up some things for Cindy and she just needs a confirmation on your people for Career….” David trails off when Steve makes a sound between his teeth like a hiss and gives him a big wide-eyed look. “…Day?”
Steve’s wide-eyed expression forms quickly into an innocent smile when Eddie turns to look at him, “Babe-“
“Career Day?” Eddie asked scandalized, hand to chest. “Career Day is coming up, Steven? I had no idea.”
Steve’s eyes flicker away from Eddie’s over to David’s and he says, “Yes. Yep, they’ll be here with bells on. Henderson and Wheeler. Just them.”
“Wheeler?” Eddie manages to sound even more scandalized. “Stevie, you – you invited Wheeler to Career Day and not your own husband? I have a career!”
“Yes, you do,” Steve says in a voice that’s a little too ‘second grade teacher’ to not be a little bit insulting. “And you’re amazing, and I love you, but they wanted people with career paths that didn’t start so…infamous?”
David starts inching out of the room because as much as he wants to know more about Steve, he doesn’t want to witness an argument he started. He’s almost to the door when Eddie says, “I worked for my success.”
“Yeah, I know,” Steve sighs like he’s remembering something awful. “If only there wasn’t a mob.”
David is out the door when he hears that and he pauses for only a second before pulling out his phone like, ‘what the fuck, guys????’
#Steve unknowing distressing everybody in one way or another#David’s just like ‘mob????’ and also like ‘I might have just caused an argument between a mobster and his spouse’#and Marissa is just like ‘no hun’#I don’t think the cia babysitter is aware of the gc because Steve isn’t watched too closely and also the gc doesn’t even know Eddie’s name#eddie munson tiktok saga#eddie munson#steve harrington

Rsync corrump linkdump
I'm coming to DEFCON! On Aug 9, I'm emceeing the EFF POKER TOURNAMENT (noon at the Horseshoe Poker Room), and appearing on the BRICKED AND ABANDONED panel (5PM, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01). On Aug 10, I'm giving a keynote called "DISENSHITTIFY OR DIE! How hackers can seize the means of computation and build a new, good internet that is hardened against our asshole bosses' insatiable horniness for enshittification" (noon, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01).
As per the uje, I've arrived upon a Saturday with a backlog of links that I have not managed to squeeze into the week's newsletters/blogs, so it's time for another linkdump, 22nd in an erratic series. Here's the previous 21:
https://pluralistic.net/tag/linkdump/
Let's start with some seasonal material, and by "seasonal," I of course mean Hallowe'en. Yes, August is the official start of Spooky Season, and yes, I am a monster for insisting on this, but being a monster is the point of Spooky Season (which is what differentiates Spooky Season pushers like me from the creeps who insist that you need to start prepping for Xmas in late September – they're monsters, too, but Yule Monsters are bad) (with the exception of Krampus).
I was a monster kid and now I'm a monster adult. It all started when I was bitten by a radioactive Haunted Mansion at the age of six:
https://memex.craphound.com/2012/10/22/how-a-haunted-mansion-addict-fell-in-love-with-the-greatest-ride-on-earth/
I am a sucker for all things monstrous, and so I was intrigued when I got a book of "creepy-cute" stickers in the mail from a publicist at Simon & Schuster:
https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Creepy-Cute-Sticker-Book/Gaynor-Carradice/Creepy-Cute-Gift-Series/9781507222515
"Creepy-Cute" turns out to be an official designation, embraced by the illustrator GaynorCarradice, who has created several books on these lines, featuring her chibi/monster crossover creations, which do exactly what it says on the tin, by which I mean, there's some genuinely creepy stuff in the mix, along with the cute.
It's when the cute pastels rub up against the gore, skulls, eyeballs and other visceral viscera that these illustrations really kick off some heat – I've rounded up a few of my favorites here:
https://craphound.com/images/creepycute.jpg
One of the surefire signs that Spooky Season is upon us is that the (sometimes NSFW) Tumblr account Halloweenlandmotherfucker emerges from dormancy with a stream of images of vintage Hallowe'en cards (these were a thing!), photos of people in costume and other delightful visual novelties:
https://www.tumblr.com/halloweenlandmotherfucker
Monster culture isn't just for Hallowe'en, of course. The ancient and noble tradition of compiling and publishing bestiaries is alive and well, thanks to RPGs. In the beginning, there was the D&D Boxed Set, with its Monsters and Treasure booklet:
https://www.americanroads.us/DandD/ODnD_Monsters_and_Treasure.pdf
Then came the Monster Manual, the first hardcover D&D book, succeeded by the Fiend Folio, which featured Charlie Stross creations like the githzerai and slaad, Indeed, there was a whole, iconic library of hardcovers that fit perfectly in an oversized backpack that I dragged everywhere so that I could obsessively read and re-read them.
Eventually, these gave way to new hardcovers with new rules as well as new corporate owners (Wizards of the Coast, then Hasbro), culminating in the release of the Open Gaming License, an "open content" license that was a) grossly defective; b) largely irrelevant; and c) hugely controversial in 2023, when Hasbro terminated it:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/12/beg-forgiveness-ask-permission/#whats-a-copyright-exception
The Open Gaming License purported to license out game elements that weren't copyrightable (rules, tables, etc), as well as material that you could likely use under copyright exceptions like fair use:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/01/beware-gifts-dragons-how-dds-open-gaming-license-may-have-become-trap-creators
And worst of all, it was revocable, so games publishers who tooled up to publish supplements and sourcebooks based on the OGL could have the rug yanked out from under them at any time (that time turned out to be early 2023).
Hasbro's OGL rug-pull had three salutary effects:
I. It gave gamers a crash-course in what was – and wasn't – copyrightable in an RPG design;
It encouraged game developers to look beyond D&D's OGL rules and into truly open (and often superior) alternatives; and
It inflicted so much reputational harm on Hasbro that, 20 months later, they announced that they would release a new set of D&D rules under the Creative Commons Attribution Only 4.0 license:
https://www.dicebreaker.com/games/dungeons-and-dragons-5e/news/dungeons-and-dragons-2024-srd-wont-be-another-ogl-fiasco
Now, CC BY 4.0 is a real-ass license. Notably, it corrects a defect in the earlier versions of the CC licenses that gave rise to a class of predatory copyleft trolls like the odious Pixsy:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/01/24/a-bug-in-early-creative-commons-licenses-has-enabled-a-new-breed-of-superpredator/
If Hasbro follows through on their promise, the new CC materials will kick off with the 2025 release of the next edition of the Monster Manual:
https://dungeonsanddragonsfan.com/new-2024-dnd-monster-manual/
It's wild to think that tabletop RPGs are now a cutting-edge way to learn about digital policy, but on the other hand, D&D arrived in my home around the same time as my Apple ][+, which was also around the time I first heard the name Ronald Reagan (rest in piss).
The legacies of the 80s – RPGs, digital technology and Reaganomics – cast a long shadow. Last month, many of us discovered the hard way that Reaganomics – specifically, the embrace of monopolies as "efficient" – has produced a world of unimaginable brittleness. Millions of people around the world found themselves cut off from ATM cash, flights, hospital care, and many other essentials thanks to the Crowdstrike Blue Screen of Death outage. While many of the explainers have focused on how Crowdstrike fatfingered a software update that crashed all those computers, there's been a lot less commentary about how it is that one company had it in its power to do so much harm.
Writing last week for EFF's Deeplinks blog, my colleague Rory Mir tackled that (far more important) issue:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/07/crowdstrike-antitrust-and-digital-monoculture
Market concentration – monopoly – is the common thread wound around so many of our daily horribles. Think of the tech billionaires who threw in their lot with Trump last month. How did they get to be billionaires? Monopoly power. Remember back in 2017, that notorious photo of the tech industry meeting at the top of Trump Tower, with Peter Thiel at Trump's left hand?
https://techcrunch.com/2016/12/14/donald-trump-meets-with-tech-leaders/
People were appalled that this group of corporate leaders, who between them controlled virtually all the technology in our lives, would debase themselves by paying fealty to this buffoonish would-be dictator.
But far more consequential was the fact that you could fit everyone who controlled all of our technology around a single table. Once everyone important to an industry can fit around a single table, it's only a matter of time until they find a table to sit around, and that's when it all starts to go wrong. As the Communist firebrand Adam Smith once wrote, "People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices."
Enshittification starts with market concentration. This is a subject I'm going to be going very deep on next Saturday, when I give my Defcon keynote, "Disenshittify or die! How hackers can seize the means of computation and build a new, good internet that is hardened against our asshole bosses' insatiable horniness for enshittification":
https://info.defcon.org/event/?id=54861
When I give that talk – and afterwards at my book signing – I will be wearing an N95 mask, just as I did last year. Why am I wearing a mask? Two reasons: first, Long Covid is a horror. One of the best writers I know – a living legend – recently told me that their book-writing days are likely done because of Long Covid brain fog.
A new Lancet article gets deep into the science of Long Covid:
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S014067362401136X
The principle author of the Lancet article is Oxford health professor Trish Greenhalgh, who gave an excellent lay summary in her newsletter:
https://independentsage.substack.com/p/long-covid-a-dystopian-game-of-pinball
In particular, Greenhalgh describes why some people don't get Long Covid, and some people do – and, most important, explains why the fact that you didn't get Long Covid last time doesn't mean you won't get it next time:
https://independentsage.substack.com/p/long-covid-a-dystopian-game-of-pinball
So I don't want to get covid, and so I'm gonna wear a mask. Because masks fucking work. A new study reveals just how well they work:
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/ebiom/article/PIIS2352-3964(24)00192-0/fulltext
The study shows that wearing any mask, even without knowing how to fit it well, offers substantial protection against both contracting and transmitting covid. Even better: wearing an N95 (even without paying attention to correct fit) offers "near perfect" protection against covid:
https://today.umd.edu/n95-masks-nearly-perfect-at-blocking-covid-umd-study-shows
I didn't get covid at Defcon last year, and I didn't get it at HOPE, and I didn't get it on our family vacation in July – all events where friends got sick. The difference? I wore a mask. Which works.
OK, I need to go work on my Defcon speech some more, so I'm gonna sign off, but I will leave you with just one more link, the wonderful new public domain image search tool, Public Work, which crawls and indexes the Met, the NYPL, and other sources:
https://public.work/
I rely on public domain, CC and other freely usable clip art to make the collages that accompany this newsletter/blog's stories. While I have very little talent in the visual arts, I'm getting steadily better. I mean, look at this amazing image I womped up for last week's story on Bitcoin bros' election campaign finance fraud:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorow/53893519593/in/album-72177720316719208
You can see a collection of my recent collages in my Flickr gallery for them:

Support me this summer on the Clarion Write-A-Thon and help raise money for the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Workshop!
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:

JDHDJAHDWJ YOU'RE SO WELCOME!!! :DD 💞💓
The voices of those kids now felt blurry, far. There was a faint mistiness in his eyes, as if he were attempting to hold back tears.
"Yeah, I was like, eleven or something."
"Pfft, you liar!''
He was slowly getting harshly pulled back into the past, to memories that were long ago.
Memories he wished he could relieve.
Again and again.

25 asks! Thank you! :}} 👹
I have it in the back of my mind, but I haven't actually made any steps in making more master posts.. 😔
ReBLOGGING is good! Its a feature of Tumblr and helps more people find my artwork! Very nice :))
RePOSTING is stealing my art and posting it on your own account. Giving you and only you all the credit. That's theft and no good!
I think I remember wanting my sona to be an object head of some kind. I think I doodled probably a dozen different ideas before I got frustrated and just scribbled my most recent attempt out.
But then it hit me. I doodled two little white eyes on the scribble and I knew I had found my sona XDD
@xxthedragonrebornxx
XD Thank you for remembering my boundaries and respecting them! :)) And THANK YOU FOR THE CUPCAKE!! :DDD
I haven't read it, but I've seen it blowing up all over tumblr. It must be pretty cool! :00
@milk-powrit
<XD I won't lie, Bill is a fantastic villain. I just "hate" him because Stanley is my favorite character and Bill put his family through hell 💀
Most of the team: "Aww 🥰💞💞"
Gloria: "WHO ARE YOU AND HOW ARE YOU HOLDING ALL OF US UP AT ONCE"
@pink088
<XD These past 2-3 days have just hammered me health wise, but I can at least say that I've been sleeping enough!
And thanks for the check in! I wish you the best :))
(Pokemon violet comic(?))
:DD Thank you!! I'm glad you liked it!! :)))
If I ever really go into those series I would :00 But I cant remember the Godziilla movies- plus that would be really hard to draw <XDD
There's so many sonic medias that i wouldn't know which one to go by- and I've seen playthroughs of Poppy playtime but it never really grabbed my interest.. <XD
I'll do my best to keep up with all that <XDD Thank you!
(Frank butterfly post)
Oh there's no need to worry about Frank! It might be hard to tell- but that was actually a moth! Frank had bags under his eyes because he was out late studying moths :))
<XD Well considering Homes intentions are intended to be unknown- you're free to imagine that! :D
@skywillow28022
ohmygosh the third movie is so good I actually cant watch it anymore lest I burst into tears 😭😭😭💞💞💞 10/10 WOULD recommend cars 3--
Anyways- I ADORE the cars franchise and absolutely would have drawn them more.. if cars weren't so hard to draw <XD Plus my favorite thing to draw is angsty cuddles and hugs and big droopy eyes and tears- that's kiiiind'a hard to pull off if your characters are cars-
Of course I could always draw them as humans like many other artists have.. but idk, it just doesn't feel the same you know? <XD
Also thank you! I hope you day goes well too! :))
@neo-metalscottic (Welcome home post(?)) (Octonauts eye study) (Oxem and Pepemijo comic)
AAAAA Thank you sop much! :DD I'm glad you've been liking my recent posts!
As for Oxem and Pepemijo, I cant show images because of the stupid 30 images limit-- But Pepemigo is based on/inspired by the Year of the dragon mask, and Oxem is based on the current season of Duets seasonal guide mask! :00
I imagine there are other dragons out there, like that other sky dragon that I made one time-- <XDD I don't really have any ideas for their powers or their story, but I had intended that Pepemijo at least knocked the krill out in self defense. Thankfully they wont be hunted by krill following that event- Oxem got them to a safe place and he knows that he should steer clear of krill territory in the future <XD
And of course! I'd love to see any critters that you've made! :DDD
@sussyhahag
uhg, always disappointing to see.. thank you for letting me know though 😔
*VERY LOUD CARTOON BROKEN HEART SOUND* (I LOVE THISSS)
<XD yup.
Also even though that disclaimer is there for FNAF and Octonauts, I still get people harassing me anyways!.... :')
@vesselofmanythings
AAAA THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! :DDD And I wish you luck on your slime rancher creative adventure!! :}}}
AAA THANK YOU SO MUCH!! :DDDD That means a lot!!! :))
@starsbee
This shouldn't have made me laugh as much as it did XDD
@wolfie-777
Oh no.... THAT MUST BE ME WELCOME HOME AU COMING BACK--
@anikakitty11
Somethin ain't right with that dog <XDD
@edelgeist (Referencing this post)
oooh :00 I wasn't aware of that- thank you for the info! Perhaps I should invest in a cooling pad <XD
I have not <:( But after googling it- I love the artstyle! :DD

also! take a work in progress cause I joined another map :DD
this one’s about a part i’ve read this time, at least 😅
[VD: A messy animation on a gray-green background. Three dragons, one considerably smaller. The closest one, who’s drawn in red, is speaking first and only her head and neck is drawn so far. She says “And don’t come crawling back here.” with enunciation on the t in don’t. As she speaks the small green dragon in the background flinches, and a skinny purple dragon beside him wraps her tail closer when he moves.
in the next frame, the red dragon is in the background, her whole body turning as she says: “How’s That?”
Again, the green dragon flinches and looks in the direction of the purple dragon. END VD

Insert TV science here now |DD
Uuuugh I felt so slow with these ones XDD didn’t help I thought it’d be a good idea to put TMNT 2003 on for background noise. I kept getting half distracted by it X’DD I only did 4 pages this post ‘cause the next page is a scene shift to the other group and I didn’t want to cut off one page into that.
Much thanks to Wys for helping me with April’s pose in the very last panel |D
Oh, and side note, the claw marks on Donnie’s back are scars from that one episode with Shredder, not from the mutant komodo dragon. The bite mark is there on his shoulder, but it’s much less obvious without color |D

Serial Designation J -> Julie
This bitch literally the entire reason I made this AU HAHAHAHA. Rambling below.
JULIE:
🖋️ Shortened name for "Juliet", as in Romeo and Juliet. Do you sense the doomed yuri.
🖋️ Swears in school terminology.
🖋️ Precocious, popular, and has a supernatural understanding of doors.
🖋️ Obsessed with being a perfect student, hence why she follows the dress code exactly.
🖋️ Used to cover up her freckles. However, after Tessa remarked how she was self conscious about her own freckles, Julie decided to stop.
🖋️ Still bullies Nexus, but does care enough to not let him die. After all, they can't regenerate or come back as clones like the DDs.
🖋️ Hoards pens and school supplies like a dragon building their nest. If you lose a pen, you will never find it again.
🖋️ Serial-In-Class-Doodler, but is both surprisingly good at it and still has remarkable grades.
🖋️ Defacto choice for leader, and abuses this power.
🖋️ Still dies in episode 1. Skill issue, tbh.
RELATED LORE BITS:
🔺 Series opens with a Group Project on a word problem about buying watermelons. Julie did all the research, Virtue did the slides, and Nexus read the presentation.
🔺 There was barely any communication about the project, though, and Nexus based his presentation solely off of Virtue's slides... All of which were about the DDs.
🔺 Nexus took the opportunity to talk about how they can befriend the murderous robots beyond the steel doors. Neither Julie or Virtue were happy with this.
🔺 Their remediation assignment is to justify how the DDs can be befriended. Which the gang have to venture outside for.

OKAY, look 😂. I am so bad at video games that I literally did not find/do a lot of the superfluous side quests (I did not even notice the notice boards until relatively late in the game), and I literally had to look up the wikia page for almost every enemy so I could actually progress. That meant I had someone holding my hand and telling me exactly what to do... which meant I was ONLY doing the bare minimum of main quests and going through said quests REALLY quickly.
Also I was only staying at my parent's place for like 2 weeks the first time I played it, and I wanted to finish the game in that time. So it was entirely a situation of my own making 😂
It really never ceases to amaze me that I was literally level 23 the first time I defeated Grigori and had to face post-game like that. Like, I was BARELY out of the phase of Kunai causing stamina drain just by wielding them and I had to either a) face the Ur-Dragon or b) farm the Everfall full of high-level enemies and boss monsters in order to complete the game. Like. Damn, maybe 17 year old me was made of something different lol
#as i like to say: is dd hard? well if you do exactly what youre told then no. but if you do exactly what youre told then yes.#also i did not read your reply as aggressive in the slightest lol#i could tell it was more surprised/excited/passionate lol#i also remember walking into tainted mountain and NOT being able to get past the enemies in there.#so i just ran past them!! and then post game they were everywhere and i felt so DUMB 😂#dragons dogma

Hey, again, wickedcriminal, I see that the half brother au posts have returned and I am so happy I was going through withdrawal I had to reread all my how to train your Dragon books in order to pass the time. I also wanted to thank you for inspiring me to reread them. The books were so much darker and better than the movies. I would be able to finish all of them if I had them ALL!?! Seriously I have books 1-8. I have trying to get the final ones but my local book stores never have them in stock! Though seriously, I wanted to thank you for posting such an amazing little alternate universe story, I cannot wait for your story to start getting some more attention, and your book based of it to start I will be their to start reading it as soon as it comes.
I would like to go onto my asks now, as with the new law that I’ve recently seen I’ve had a couple of questions that I now have, so if if the twins are keeping a score of how many times one the kids get kidnapped doesn’t that mean that all of them have been abducted at some point? Also what are those situations even like cause if the twins are keeping score than Elder and Youngers friends must have some pretty memorable abduction stories they have to talk about. Wonder who has it worse?
Hello again!! Omg thank you for all your kind words!!! I'm so happy to see you're still enjoying the au!! :DD
The Twins keeping score is hilarious, and I'm sure all of the Riders have gotten their fair share of snatching at some point, with the Twins keeping a nice little tally board on the wall of the clubhouse and the Hiccup brothers are in the lead by a LANDSLIDE 😂 what can they say, they're just very kidnappable ASDHKLSGK
As for who gets kidnapped more; that's a great question! They've both been kidnapped by plenty of people ever since they were kids and all through the canon. The Danger-Brutes, the Romans, the Hysterics, the Berserks (especially when Dagur became chief), and eventually the Dragon Hunters (who are the Lava Louts in this au) all capture and hold the boys prisoner/hostage/ransom multiple times. It's easy to say they probably lost count.
But when it comes to getting snatched by their personal enemies, there is a winner!
Hiccup E has a nice little group of people that want to snatch him and have snatched him multiple times, including Madguts the Murderous (taking the place of TV Alvin in R/DOB and snatching him and Toothless several times), Viggo and Ryker (both separately several times in RTTE), and Krogan (Midnight Scrum in RTTE).
Hiccup Y has a smaller roster by only one person, which includes Dagur (taking Younger instead of Gustav in RTTE), Alvin the Treacherous (the 2nd and 3rd books in R/DOB and the 8th book in RTTE), and Norbert the Nutjob (book 7 in in RTTE).
So its looking like the contest for the most kidnappings goes to Hiccup the Elder!!! 🎉🎉 Someone get that boy a prize!!
#the dragon master; the hope and heir to the hairy hooligans; leader of the dragon riders; night fury tamer#elder has more monikers than younger so everyone considers him the bigger threat#everyone except alvin the treacherous of course#also norbert but that guy just holds a mean grudge SSJSJSJFDJV#younger's only moniker is 'dragon whisperer' which is a good one but it's nothing like elder's laundry list#hbau#half brothers au#ask#this is all as of race to the edge because if we count book 9 onward#younger is going to leave elder in the dust

Dragon's Dogma Primer + Tips
I've been spending tons of time with Dragon's Dogma 2. I loved the first game and was shocked they chose to make a sequel. Legitimately Dragon's Dogma is like, the only franchise that actually has the power to make me genuinely enjoy video games again like when I was a kid.
I also noticed that a lot of people new to the franchise have picked it up this time around and are bumping their heads against it, which is great! Now I'll actually have people to talk to about Dragon's Dogma :')
I wanted to write a little primer and 'beginners tips' to help people learn how to approach the series. Here's some pointers:
Dragon's Dogma gets a lot of comparisons to Dark Souls. I wouldn't say it's because it's a hard game, but it does expect you to approach it on its own terms and won't make many concessions to you if you try to fight it.
DD is a management game masquerading as an open-world RPG. What it expects of you is to move slowly and take your time. It wants you to plan your journey, anticipate challenges, pace yourself, and prepare accordingly. You'll find much less friction if you keep this in mind.
'Fast Travel' as a concept is hard to come by in DD, and you will find yourself walking most places. The ability to instantly teleport yourself anywhere is limited to Ferrystones and Portcrystals, which are both in very limited supply. DD2 has Oxcarts from major settlements, but these are also imperfect by-design as they are time-dependent and prone to attacks, which may leave you stranded. Remember: DD is by and large about preparation and long journeys. Try shortening your routes by exploring for shortcuts, or treating every trip like an opportunity to explore a new area on the way.
DD LOVES rare and consumable items. Some of the best and most useful items in the game are often unique and can only be used once or in a limited capacity. This helps make the items feel more exclusive, while also encouraging you to be doubly sure of your intention before using them. If an item seems like it could be rare, it probably is.
Explore everywhere. In my opinion, DD's level design is unmatched in terms of open-world games. There are things hidden absolutely everywhere in every nook and cranny. If you comb every location you will constantly find new things, and it goes out of its way to ensure exploration is rewarded. I don't think any video game does open world exploration quite as good as DD does.
The quest design is cryptic (and often questionable) and likes to challenge you. The game will say 'find [x] item' and not tell you where it is. Sometimes pawn knowledge may help, but expect to find it through exploring the world and digging around hidden corners. While some quests let you know where to go, don't always expect it.
Some side quests are gated by story progression and will become locked off when advancing the story. Make sure you finish all your side quests before advancing the story!
Don't jump in and accept every quest you see, as some quests are timed and some quests require a lot of preparation. For example, in DD1 escort quests involved escorting someone across the whole world. Read a quest carefully and know the terms before accepting it.
Timed quests are a thing, and usually act as a way to keep you on your toes and force you to prove your ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Expect to receive timed quests at any given moment, and adapt accordingly. They can be stressful.
New Game + is a major part of the game in the DD franchise. Things will happen in the game that will block you out of content. You will fail quests, make choices that block future content, consume items you didn't mean to, etc. NG+ is where you get to experience these all again, so don't worry too much if you weren't able to do it the first time around.
Per above, I personally avoid Googling stuff about the game or quests before doing them. Usually there are things you are going to miss, and reading about them sometimes feels worse than just discovering them later does!
There are two types of saves: "Hard" saves which occur when sleeping at an inn, and "Soft" saves done manually or via auto-save. Sometimes it's prudent to rest at an Inn before attempting major quest beats in case something goes awry.
DD loves consequences for your actions, and while every NPC in the game can be killed it is rarely ever worth it. In DD1, killing an NPC means they're gone forever, which can lock you out of new quests or progression and rewards related to that character. In DD2 there are resources costs to resurrect someone, which mitigates it slightly but still makes it not worth it.
'Forgeries' are a very cool mechanic that allow you to pay an NPC to make a copy of an item. The copy usually just looks identical, but this often allows you to keep quest items for yourself and turn in the forgery to a quest NPC. As with anything else, sometimes this may have future consequences!
Without spoiling anything: DD loves to radically change the open world. Watch out!
The Vocation system is worth exploring. For a cheap fee you can try out every class and find what works best for you, so if you start as a Fighter and hate being a Fighter you're never locked into it.
Levelling a vocation allows you to unlock passive abilities called 'augments' that can carry over between classes, and can help build your favourite vocation further.
Some Vocations have mobility skills (Levitate and Double-Vault). If you like exploring everywhere these are absolutely essential because they let you reach places some classes cannot.
Combining materials makes new items. Experiment to find new recipes.
In DD1 combining items often makes them heavier. In DD2 combining items often makes them lighter.
Every character in the game has an 'affinity' towards you, that changes with how you treat them. This has implications.
Anyway I'm just glad people are finally playing and talking about the franchise. Hope you have fun! :)
