Why is it that in every modern AU Kakashi is a cop? Or like – a college student? I mean, you do you, but as they say: variety is the spice of life and I'm on my hands and knees here, begging, like some charles dickens urchin, for him to have as buckwild of a backstory in modern AUs as he does in canon.

And so, I'm here to propose some alternative occupations to consider for Kakashi the next time the urge to write a modern AU hits:

1) Teacher – the thing he is in canon.

2) Soldier – also the thing he is in canon.

3) Politician – he is the ninja president after all!

4) A dragon – I think he would enjoy it <3

5) Child soldier – they exist in the real world too.

6) Orphanage matron.

7) The token adult in a children's novel that helps them solve a murder mystery.

8) Olympic athlete.

9) Child prodigy who won a nobel prize at age 14 and disappeared from the public eye only to be found 15 years later running a cheese making business.

10) OnlyFans model.

11) Photo-journalist.

12) Auditor who's on Obito's tail for tax evasion and money laundering – Obito insists his shady cult is a non-profit and thereby exempt from federal taxation (it is not).

13) Professional clown.

14) Homewrecker.

15) A single mom who works two jobs, who loves her kids and never stops, with gentle hands and the heart of a fighter – yknow? the thing he is in canon.

evie doesn't know anything about her circumstances before her dads. it was javier who chose her, a baby from his birth city, and he refuses to tell her anything. says it's better for her not to know. there's a part of evie that'll always be angry at him for keeping that choice from her, but she's also too scared of what she might find to go against her fathers.

pre-adoption life aside, post-adoption has been pretty great. evana loves her dads: hollywood and international film royalty, oscar-winning director javier ochoa and movie star denji maeda. they spoiled evie rotten growing up and managed to only be a little disappointed once it became clear that she wasn't into movies the way they were. instead, evie went the athletics route: swimming, diving. she loved diving especially, wanted to make it to the olympics and almost did.

INJURY TW. until what the deems the accident. evie doesn't like to talk about the accident. when her eds, dormant and undiagnosed, flared for the first time. when she had to go to the hospital. when she got diagnosed, when her dreams of diving went down the drain for her own safety.

now aimless in life, evie asks her dads for the simple request of finding her a job. not a big one. something impermanent, something to take her mind off dreams stolen from her. except it's been two years and she's still here, ignoring her fathers whenever they ask her to come home.

I know nothing about sports or sporting events, but I do love character evaluations in the form of opinion questions that have no right or wrong answers. Therefore, I present to you:

Karlach: Boxing

Of all the strength based sports featured, I feel like boxing fits her the most. She is a literal warrior that uses her superior might to take down enemies. I feel like in a non fantasy or modern day AU, making Karlach a boxer fits well with her character. If you told her there was a “punch hard” competition, she would sign up in a heartbeat.

Minthara: Weightlifting

She’s a paladin. She wears heavy armor and deals with heavy equipment on the regular. I feel like this would fit her well. She would enjoy walking right up to men in the gym just to lift more than they do. I think she deserves this.

Shadowheart: Gymnastics

She was trained in espionage. Maybe it’s because I don’t know much about spies outside of movies, but I feel like gymnastics fits with this. She’s strong and stylish and quick on her feet. Enough said.

Lae’zel: Modern Pentathlon.

I was going to say triathlon before I discovered this exists. She would be doing the most, what can I say? I almost decided against it because of the horses, but what is horse riding if not the real life equivalent of dragon riding? Lae’zel is a horse girl confirmed. I think this event fits her personality perfectly.

Jaheira: Marathon Swimming

I just feel like this fits her. She is undoubtedly strong and resilient. She would be the type to just swim for ages and ages. I feel like her character, at least by the time we get to BG3, is doing some version of “just keep swimming” as she deals with the death of her husband, the loss of her friend, the numerous children and life responsibilities, and a life of adventure that won’t let her retire. Why not make that motto literal?

Gale: Chess / Bowling.

This is absolutely a cop out and you can call me on it. I just don’t think Gale cares about sports. Chess was included in the 2000 Olympics (according to Wikipedia) and Bowling was included in the ‘88 Olympics (also Wikipedia), so I feel like I’m not wrong. We know the man loves lanceboard. As for bowling, “take as many things out at once with power and precision” is kind of what he does anyway. If we are talking modern events only, he and Astarion are on the couch with snacks pointing out every minute flaw in other people’s events like they could do better.

Wyll: Fencing.

Come on. I mean… come on. It had to be. To me, Wyll’s appeal if half kind man rizz and half swordsman rizz. All I want is a good man who owns a sword. I know fencing is a lot different that actual sword play, but look it’s the closest we have. There would also be edits of him taking off his mask to reveal his face and at least one video of him running to his love interest in the crowd after he takes gold. He deserves this.

Astarion: ???

Look I have thought and thought about what he would do, and I truthfully do not know. I also just don’t think Astarion cares about sports. If he did he would get disqualified for cheating anyway. I think he tunes in to judge the hell out of figure skating and gymnastics events (he sends texts to Shadowheart with his own score for her performance) and to look at the pretty outfits, but that’s it. (He would also watch the others do their performances but shhh they don’t need to know that).

Halsin: Trainer / Stable caretaker for horse competitions.

I also do not think Halsin would compete in any event. He does not want that kind of attention and stress. I do, however, think he is the perfect man to care for the animals. He makes sure the horses get where they need to be as safely and comfortably as possible. Food, water, medical attention, etc. Those horses are in PEAK condition.

Minsc: Shot Put.

Big man throws small thing. Enough said. Honestly, I think it fits. (Look, I know those shot put balls are much MUCH heavier than a hamster, but come on). Also, I can just see him doing this in battle. Enemy escaping? Not to worry! Minsc has a rock! I also just realized I only gave legitimate sporting events to Wyll and Minsc. I stand by this.

I know none of the male origin companions are very strong/athletic,

BUT

What olympic sport would each origin companion compete in? What skills do each have that make you think with training/refinement they could (somehow) qualify to compete?

If there's one you could not see competing at all, what sport do you think they'd be invested in?

A Rocky Start

I partially blame @slothquisitor for encouraging the notion that Cullen could be a curler. Modern verse with magic, where Cullen “Curly” Stanton Rutherford is a seasoned Olympic athlete and gets paired with newcomer Kaeran Lavellan for the first ever mixed doubles curling. As if there’s not enough tension, there’s an added chill to the air when the two are on the ice.

“Can you even lift one of those rocks?” He frowned, slightly concerned. 

Not this shit again. 

She sized up the rocks, testing the handle of one before reaching for the third one. Always the third. It wasn’t superstition, just a habit. A compulsion, Rhona would tease her. Nevertheless, the third. Always. 

Kaeran tested the heft, bending her knees before rising with the rock in hand, its handle digging in her palm; it was a comforting feel that she had grown to love. 

She glared at the shem who was to be her partner over her shoulder, pausing to prove her point. Her arm began to tremble but she controlled it as much as possible. The last thing she needed was to give him an ounce of satisfaction, though judging by his raised brows and the slight slack jaw she saw that she proved her worth.

When she had first started her hands fiercely ached for days. Now, all she felt was a tingle and would flex the static away without a pinched look on her face.

Just as gracefully, she lowered herself to let go of the rock and it gently clicked with another. She might as well have thrown it with force, the arena was as still as the grave and the click echoed softly.  

“We start training tomorrow and I better not have to drag your ass out of bed myself, Rutherford.” 

Normally she’d be friendlier but Rutherford had struck a nerve and she had already started the day with little patience. Better to nip that kind of dismissive behaviour in the bud. Kaeran could have shut him up differently but at least two of her options were against regulations and she didn’t want to deal with the Olympic committee and possible punishment. Besides, it was always satisfying showing off her skills and making her critics question everything. Including critical Olympic veterans. 

Heading out with a small grin on her lips, she refused to feel bad; too many times she’d let her guard down and she swore that it wouldn’t ever happen again. He may be her partner for this farce of an event but she was only in it for the prestige and the shot of winning gold. For all she knew, the mixed doubles event wouldn’t happen in the next Olympics. 

And she didn’t doubt Rutherford’s abilities, she had seen him in previous Olympics; Kaeran conceded that he was extremely skilled and that he had a few tricks up his sleeves, but so did she.

She was going to prove that she didn’t get in the team because she was different. She earned her damn spot with tears, sweat, spit and blood. 

And she wasn’t going to pass the opportunity to show the world just what a Dalish elf could accomplish.

He is eighteen, freshly home from his first and last Olympics, and he steps out of the taxi to find the front lawn of his house littered with black garbage bags, little cards affixed to them on which Patroclus’s name is neatly printed. x.

Favorite ending line from a fic in 2022:

If Zagreus is willing to die to steal a few minutes of Thanatos’s attention, Thanatos is willing to put his duty to the side for a few moments more to watch for the sunrise. x.

Fic I'm most proud of from 2022:

Void. It was one of those fics where I felt like I was possessed while writing. I wrote fast and compulsively, hah, and I really liked how it turned out. (But I think if I do a good job with the ending of All That Glitters, it might be the fic I'm most proud of in 2023. I really love some of the sections in that fic and it's been really fun and challenging to tackle so much time in just small snippets.)

Longest fic in 2022:

even if it's a lie clocks in as the winner at just under 85k words. Most of my longfics are 50k or below, but I think modern AUs get me a little wordier (I thought Gold would be 10-15k and ATG would be shorter than Gold, and I was very wrong on both counts).

New Things I Tried in 2023:

For some reason, I started writing in the present tense this year, and now I can't stop. I broke my previous record for number of POVs in a fic with around 15 in Void. And I think ATG is my most ambitious in terms of how much time is covered-- it spans over 20 years, and it's been a fun challenge to show them changing, growing, and fucking up over two decades.

Goals for 2023:

I have a couple fics that got put on the backburner for most of 2022 for a number of reasons, and I'd like to sit down and finish them. Now that my love of Thanzag has settled into something less all-consuming, I think I can actually turn my attention to other beloved ships (thinking particularly of Overboard and the dozen Shakarian WIPs I have).

Winter Olympics AU

Eyyy it’s that time again so it’s time to daydream about one of my (many) guilty pleasure AUs. (Also go watch the figure skating events! Man, I miss skating.).

Tucked under a read more because, as always, there’s a lot going on.

THE RIDERS

Alwin and Ena -- Ice dancers, only because it would stress Alwin out too much to yeet Ena into the air for jumps. Lifts though? Perfect. Fine. Excellent. They trained at the same facility with Red back in the day. Alwin, originally trained in men’s singles skating, was initially skeptical about switching disciplines since his performance scores had always been a bit shaky. Ena was always an ice dancer, and she was the one who first asked Alwin to try a routine with her (with much wheedling from Red).

Red -- men’s single figure skater, best known for his dark horse showing at the Olympics where he skated off with gold. Best known for the sheer height of his jumps when he was still actively competing. Retired to coach for the kids in his local neighborhood, much to the confusion of his competitive friends, who thought he was squandering his potential. He’s still alive and kicking and currently coaching his granddaughter.

Astrea -- Red’s granddaughter, who was put on skates at a young age for the inaurgural opening of Mahana Village’s one and only ice rink. Since Red’s coaching approach was a very hands-on, do-whatever-you-want-just-have-fun, her first actual teacher was Kayna in her local junior “club”. Carries a dragon-shaped tissue box cover with her that’s affectionately named Ratha. This will be her first Olympics games, but she made it against all the odds.

Avinia -- women’s singles figure skater. Most notable for her well-choreographed step sequences and transitions into spins, so she shines particularly in the free skate. Has a cat named Frostfang and there’s always a patch of him on her equipment (jersey, bag, etc.)

Lute & Cheval -- once upon a time when they were young and stupid Lute said something to the effect of: “wouldn’t it be cool if we did sledding but like, professionally?” And Cheval, equally young and stupid at the time, hadn’t known to contest this notion until it was too late and they had already built a scrappy little bobsled and were doggedly making their way through the local competitions. Their sled is affectionately called Rathi for the rugged little scrapes she’s got on her side from their manhandling of her. Lute is the pilot, Cheval mans the brakes.

THE HUNTERS

Reverto -- somehow managed to become a snowboarder against his will (he hates the cold, man). Somehow still managed to be really good at it too. Somehow, on top of all that, picked up a kid to mentor when a friend of a friend called in a favor. Competes in half-pipe and slopestyle events.

Kyle -- was taught to ski at a young age from his father. However, like most of his brothers, thought the biathlon was too boring and sought greater thrills. Kyle found his in snowboarding, and he’d rather die than admit it out loud but he’s thrilled that he gets to train under Reverto. Competes in half-pipe and slopestyle events. This will be his first Olympic games.

SUPPORTING CAST AND CREW

Lilia -- up-and-coming sports commentator. Despite Lute and Cheval’s best efforts she does not focus on bobsledding. Since she’s training under Simone, she’s learning a lot about snow sports like snowboarding, but she’s also determined to be able to call for figure skating one day as well.

Zellard -- Rutoh Rink Manager.

Additional Shenanigens

Kyle’s mother liked figure skating, which is about the extent of his knowledge in the other sport. So I’ve like actually written a lot of this.  But....  based on this lovely post by @athoughtfox and then @edmundjustking made the serious mistake of asking for me to elaborate and so I did , a little bit here .  But... I have opinions about this, OK?  And A LOT OF WORDS.   REALLY A LOT OF WORDS.

Digory – Professor at Oxford, professor of philosophy and theology, renowned expert on the Oxford Franciscans, the Blessed Duns Scotus, and Gerard Manly Hopkins.  Professor Kirke is trying to construct an elaborate theory of environmental stewardship and haecceity based upon his Narnia experience. An excellent theologian and a very bad Christian – he’s not been to church in over 30 years.  Ace.

Polly – Amateur zoologist and naturalist --- “maiden” aunt HA! Always accompanied by a dog, a cat, an umbrella and a carpet bag.  Drove an ambulance in France for the Red Cross in WW1 in France.  Drives an MG. World traveler.   Bisexual. Works at the Whipsnade Zoo and has a bad habit of always trying to curtsy in front of Peter.

Peter: Private, youngest member of Ox & Bucks 2d Battalion, D Company, Glider Corps (whose insignia is Bellerophon aboard Pegasus) and sees the first action on D-Day when his Horsa Glider crashes into the Caen Canal bridge (Normandy) (which becomes known as Pegasus Bridge). He’s wounded in hedgerow battles on the march to Paris, sent home to recover and (probably) never sees more action.  (Unless he joins Captain America’s Howling Commandos and cleans up Hydra nests in former occupied Europe).  Maybe ends up with T-Force, Ox & Bucks 1st Battalion, who are rounding up German scientists and high value targets and “persuading” them to come to England or America.  

After he’s demobbed, he enrolls at Oxford and starts an affair with a married woman.  He then drops out of Oxford as a dismal failure at the classics curriculum.  He comes into some money and finally gets Aslan’s message and begins rebuilding a country for a 3rd time -- he ends up working in construction and literally becomes a rock on which England is rebuilt, as a carpenter and bricklayer.  Ultimately he’s elected to Commons as the rep for Oxford-Cowley where his battles with Margaret Thatcher become legendary.  Bisexual, married, two children, 6 grandchildren. Knighted in 1992.  

 Susan:  Lying about her age and armed with forged identify papers, Susan begins running a spy through the British Embassy in Washington DC in the summer of 1942 to build support in the American Congress for the British war effort.  She leaves school in 1943 and enters SOE training.  She is deployed to Bénouville at a woman’s hospital to spy on the Nazi fortification of the Caen Canal which Peter’s Horsa glider crashed into on D-Day. Sometime thereafter, she is eventually able to return to England (and maybe hangs out with/has sex with Peggy Carter for a while in France on the road to Paris).  Eventually, she is recruited to MI6/SIS with her partner from Washington and they eventually marry where they built networks of spies throughout the Balkans that are blown and murdered by the Cambridge 5.  Her husband may die in Berlin in or around 1950 and/or she remarries.  One daughter; one grandchild.  COE Deaconess, international election observer, advocate for women’s pentathlon in the Olympics, always keeps wolfhounds and a really large handbag that she keeps a Little Joe crossbow in that she got during the War.  Becomes Dame Commander in or around 1980.  

 Edmund:  With forged papers, Edmund passes off as a British army private in Washington DC in 1943, becomes fluent in German and Russian, and is involved in espionage efforts in Greece and the Balkans that preceded Allied operations in the Mediterranean in 1943.   He narrowly avoids a honey trap and seduction by a man with the aim of  compromising him into becoming a Soviet agent – the Soviets are seeking information on the Venona project.  After flirting with the SIS, he decides to not join his sister in espionage.  He reads law at Oxford and works the Judges’ Trial at Nuremberg.  He becomes a successful barrister and renowned human rights activist, with a particular focus on war crimes (with Lucy) and tirelessly advocates for the Chagoss Islands.  Edmund refuses a knighthood for years because he wants Peter to get his first.  He finally relents and becomes the Right Honourable Sir Edmund Pevensie but hates being called Sir.  Sits on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.  Bisexual, married, three children, five grandchildren, married to a Holocaust survivor. Always keeps cats.

 Lucy:  Leaves school in 1943 with forged identity papers to begin agitating for Greek famine relief and more aggressive action to stop the Holocaust and allow more Jews into England.  Joins the Red Cross.  Eventually becomes involved in smuggling food to the Channel Islands which are under Nazi occupation. After the war, Lucy advocates for families of Chinese men in the Liverpool area after the Chinese merchant sailors are secretly kidnapped and forcibly repatriated back to China.  She eventually goes back to school and becomes a doctor.  She and Edmund are involved war crimes investigations all over the world.  Through NGOs, she operates clinics and advocates for security of the whole person (income, education, home, political stability, healthcare) as universal human rights.  Short listed for a Nobel Peace prize twice.  Has arrest records in 5 countries for civil disobedience.  Bisexual. Marries an American, has three children and four grandchildren.  

 Eustace:  Becomes a world-renowned paleontologist, with a focus on trying to find fossil records that can explain the worldwide mythology of dragons. Discovers a species of flying lizard, Draco Scrubb.  Marries Jill, two children.

 Jill:  A respected artist and cook.  She sells art to sporting magazines her mother and father run in the U.S. and Caribbean and also to paleontological and naturalist publications.  Also active with her family, in the cause of Jamaican independence and politics thereafter.  She purchases a cottage on the Isle of Wright that has portals to a magical place with pink water and blue sand.

Mmmmh am not sure how to help with mcc, cause i supposed it would be a kinda of Olympics and even if one of the its characteristics of it is stop all of hostilities during its celebration, am not sure about how can work on canon reload au. But it make sense that the IPA goes with the idea of a Olympics to promote unity, cause this is suppose the reason which was created, but in the obviously is only a matter of softpower.

And for Empires, maybe it can be a tv show? Or just a big play for "gods" just like the wars on Hermitcraft.

Pearl always says in her streams that Empires is age of empires in minecraft with a little of roleplay. So for me it sounds just a group of nerds who loves being dramatic getting together to play a kinda sorting of dugeons and dragons :D

And YEEEEEES the attention of details on Bojack and his characters are so well made. I recommend to take breaks between season cause its only getting harder and harder in every season. Not gonna lie the fourth season was the one that more broke me but after finished the serie i regret nothing.

Hawke/Anders Olympics: Final Scores

Well guys, we did it. We came to the end of the first Dragon Age 2, Hawke/Anders Fanfic Olympics. I am immensely proud and grateful to everyone who contributed; our writers who tackled new ground bravely and head-on, our understudies who stepped in the breach when called, our coaches who provided patient advice and aid when writers needed aid, and all of YOU readers who read and voted for each story.

If you want to read (or re-read) the more-than-a-dozen fics written for this challenge, the full list can be found here! The writing is done, the posting is done, the reading and voting period is done, and now comes... *drumroll...* the results! 

Scores were left on the fics according to Google Form poll by readers (identified by email address.) All of the scores were averaged to provide a total fic score, and then each fic was added up to generate points for the team.

When all was said and done, the winner this year was...

Team AU!

Team AU made the grade with a grand total of 48 points, to Team Canon’s 44 points total. Read below the cut for details!

Most of the fics landed solid 7 averages. The highest-rated fic was Team Canon’s @fauxfires​ with Through A Forest Wilderness, for the prompt The Magician. (The highest-rated fic for Team AU was TTL KIRKWALL STATION.)

Gaps in the table show where voters left scores on one team’s fic for a prompt but not the other; however, since each fic’s scores were average, having more individual people score them would not have affected their overall total.

Unfortunately, the writer for Team Canon’s “The Lovers” did not submit their fic on time, and did not alert the mods that they were dropping out, so no substitute fic could be prepared; therefore, Team Canon received a zero for that day, affecting Team Canon’s overall score.

🤥 💥 and ⚾ for sol?

🤥 LYING - are they good liars? do they have tells to show they're lying?

Sol is an incredibly good liar. Even most people who are close to him can’t tell when he’s lying. It’s part of the reason (among many) that Boone became so antagonist towards him for a while - when he realized that Sol had been lying to him about extremely important things from the get go and Boone barely even clocked it. Absolutely destroyed any trust between them. Sol tries his hardest to be honest with his friends and found family, but it’s something that is deeply ingrained in him from long before Goodsprings. He lies to survive. Though even after Goodsprings he doesn’t mind lying to people he doesn’t care about. He had both the NCR and Caesar in his pocket for a time because of it.

That being said, Arcade learned how to read him very quickly. Sol’s tells are subtle and pretty much any verbal or fidgety cues are hidden under his speech disorder and stimming, but the biggest thing that tips Arcade off is facial expression. Sol kind of looks perpetually miserable, it’s just his resting face. When he’s lying or trying to hide an emotion (which is often), his expression becomes extremely casual and/or blank. It’s reassuring to most people, but Arcade immediately knows that something is being hidden. Boone learns this eventually as well which makes him relax around Sol a bit more.

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

Sol has a very difficult time even identifying his emotions. He feels them all so strongly both mentally and physically and so many of them feel the same to him. He struggles to deal with quite a few of them, even the good ones

But I’d say the one that gets him into the most trouble is guilt. He lives in a sea of it and it has almost killed him on multiple occasions. It drives him to doing outrageously reckless things and to push away anyone who tries to help. The guilt about his past was nearly insurmountable for a time. But even once he learns to cope with it, he still has issues with both big and small things. For example, his memory is awful and he can’t help it so he’ll forget things like anniversaries (his grip on the passage of time is also poor) or doing things he promised he would or meeting up with someone somewhere. It always absolutely tears him up inside when he realizes he’s forgotten. The guilt eats at him constantly and he will often go above and beyond to try to make it right but even so.

⚾ BASEBALL - can they play sports? what is their best position if they play a team sport? what's their strong suit (speed, power etc.)?

Hmmm Sol certainly hasn’t ever played any sports, but he would probably make a good athlete. Absolutely no contact sports or heavy lifting though.

He’s fast as hell and can run for a nearly inhumanly long time so he could very easily do most types of track and field. His agility is also maxed and he is very small so certain types of gymnastics would be good.

In my Dragon Age AU version of him he is a mage archer and I do believe he would be a fantastic archer given his skill sets as a sniper. I don’t know if that counts as a sport but it’s in the olympics so whatever

He’d be better at solo sports than team sports, but if he has to be in a team then making him the captain is the best move. He is good at organizing people and is tactically minded
