Maybe it’s a silly thing to get annoyed about but the way so many Irish names get anglicised because people just. ignore the fadas? Brian (br-eye-an) and Brían (bree-an) are not pronounced the same. Rónán Hession? Yeah that’s not Ro-nan Hess-ee-un. Ro-nawn Hesh-shn. Ciarán and Ciaran are similarly slightly different (kier-rawn vs kier-ran).
And that’s not even touching on people just dropping the fadas for no reason. Sean is not pronounced the same as Seán (or Séan for that matter). Sinead, Roisin, Aine, Blaithin, Oisin, Brid, Grainne, Meabh, Caolan, Cuan Orla, Una, Donal, Rian, Ruairi - they’re not Irish names. They are, to a very slight degree, anglicised. I know that some electronic systems don’t allow for accents on letters but why? Many, many languages use accents and those names are also incorrect without them. Mihăilescu and Mihailescu are not pronounced the same. Skłodowska and Sklowdowska are not the same. The letters are not the same. An accent isn’t just a pretty addition to a letter - in most languages it is an entirely separate letter. Electronic systems should be set up to recognise these variances. Also apostrophes in names. Those too. They exist for a reason.
(Also the ways Irish names are pronounced differently in England just because. Hession. McMahon. Moran. It’s not that I’m blaming Irish people who emigrate or English people as such, it’s just so…jarring? When people say the names differently like that.)
#had someone earlier whose surname was McMahon. McMann.#there’s a H there for a reason?#my own post#this is just me being annoyed about names don’t mind me it’s unresearched and I know I’m a hypocrite#draft saved 24/06/23#examples come from a friend whose name was Mihăilescu but he uses the Mihailescu spelling AND pronunciation#and Skłowdowska obviously is Maria Skłowdowka Curie’s name

Pod Fic: 1988
I like to listen to podfics a lot. And I’m prone to listen to the long ass ones. This post consist of my ablosute favourite Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews podfics. Most of those I have downloaded to my phone and I listened to them too many times, to the point that whole lines pop in my mind from time to time, with the exact way the nerator said them. Every story there is really is the best. I hope you’d enjoy it.

Fantastic Four Vol 1 #166 & #167
Mon Aug 12 2019 [08:04 PM] Wack'd: Somehow I doubt this
[08:04 PM] Umbramatic: doubt [08:05 PM] Wack'd: Can't say I think Ben looks good in pinstripes.
[08:06 PM] Wack'd: These extras call Ben on being kind of a dick and leave. [08:07 PM] Wack'd: Dammit Ben don't be a sexist
[08:07 PM] Wack'd: Also this dude is totally being genuine, right? Like, he's flirting? [08:07 PM] Wack'd: This is our first canonically gay character in Fantastic Four! [08:07 PM] Umbramatic: well [08:08 PM] Wack'd: And he'll never be seen again [08:08 PM] maxwellelvis: Either that or he's tossing Ben's act right back at him, but I'm going to subscribe to your reading I think. [08:10 PM] Wack'd: So the Four are headed to Nebraska to catch the Hulk because Reed thinks he's finally perfected a cure for being the Hulk [08:10 PM] Wack'd: The "shocking ending" will be that it works, I'm guessing [08:10 PM] Wack'd: Except not shocking because we all know it'll never take [08:12 PM] Wack'd: Anyway Hulk wrecks the plane, but Johnny and Reed save everyone by creating a massive draft and turning into a giant parashoot, respectively [08:14 PM] Wack'd: Reed don't--this isn't ethical, Reed
[08:14 PM] Wack'd: That's not actually freedom you're describing [08:15 PM] maxwellelvis: Reed might want to look up what the phrase "gilded cage" means [08:15 PM] Umbramatic: oh [08:16 PM] Wack'd: Sue has a new power--Hulk blows up their personal craft so Sue creates an invisible fireman's pole for Ben to slide down [08:17 PM] Wack'd: First instance, I think, of Sue using her force fields to fuck people up--she makes one around Hulk's head to suffocate him [08:18 PM] Wack'd: And while he's struggling Reed gets Ben to deliver a finishing blow [08:19 PM] Wack'd: Ben's uncomfortable because it's not a fair fight [08:19 PM] Umbramatic: oof [08:20 PM] Wack'd: Anyway Reed does the thing, but the military renegs on letting Bruce go, so Ben smashes the machine they've hooked Bruce up to [08:20 PM] Wack'd: Which unfortunately is the same machine that un-Hulked him, and breaking it re-Hulks him [08:21 PM] Wack'd: ...sure
[08:22 PM] maxwellelvis: Well, the last person I'd expect to be familiar with Elton John, that Benjamin J. "Idol O' Millions" Grimm [08:23 PM] Wack'd: I'll say this for Roy Thomas--definitely didn't see this coming [08:23 PM] Aleph Null: everyone knows that big buff monster dudes are an oppressed group [08:24 PM] Aleph Null: like gamers [08:24 PM] Umbramatic: indeed [08:24 PM] Umbramatic: buff monster dudes rise up
Mon Aug 12 2019 [08:25 PM] Wack'd: fight fight fight [08:26 PM] Wack'd: WE'RE DOIN THIS HUH
[08:27 PM] Aleph Null: so we back in the mine, got our racism swinging from side to side, side side to side [08:28 PM] Wack'd: So Ben and Hulk steal a hovercraft [08:28 PM] Umbramatic: as you do [08:29 PM] Wack'd: Reed, Sue, and Johnny are given 24 hours to get them back before the military intervenes [08:29 PM] Umbramatic: oh [08:31 PM] Wack'd: Sue can walk on water now! Force fields sure are grand [08:31 PM] Wack'd: I like that Thomas and Pérez are taking the time to actually figure out how far they can push Sue's powers [08:33 PM] Umbramatic: ye, it's nice [08:33 PM] Wack'd: So anyway Ben over the course of the issue starts to realize Hulk isn't really a pinnicle of good decision making. Ben wants to find some place to bug out and Hulk keeps starting shit [08:34 PM] Wack'd: Eventually, Ben gets fed up when Hulk tosses Reed off a building, and once again--fight fight fight [08:35 PM] Wack'd: Anyway, uh [08:35 PM] Wack'd: Prolonged exposure to gamma radiation de-Thingifies Ben, turns out [08:35 PM] maxwellelvis: Sure, sure [08:35 PM] Wack'd: Hulk, disappointed, wanders away [08:36 PM] Wack'd: And the Four return to NYC without Ben facing any consequences for freeing a military prisoner [08:36 PM] Wack'd: The army presumably is disinterested in getting the Four to go after Hulk again after the great job they did this time, in any case

[00:00:00] Devin Davis: Have you ever read a novel where the main character should lose like a lot, but because the story needed them to win and survive at the end, they just never did lose? Well, on the other hand, have you ever read a story where the villain was so awesome that he probably should have won, but didn't? Well, then let's talk about villains and plot today on Writing in the Tiny House. Hello, hello, hello! Welcome back to Writing in the Tiny House. Welcome to the show. I am Devin Davis. I am your host and I am the guy living in a tiny house who is here to show you that writing that work of fiction that you have in your brain is completely possible, and you should do it. Today we are discussing villains and plot.
[00:01:13] Last week, I told you that we would be discussing villains in action. This is kind of that. I was thinking about what action actually meant and all of the points that I had written down fed more into plot rather than just action, because villains can do just about anything you want them to do. But in the overall scheme of things, they play a very important role in the plot.
[00:01:38] Don't you think? So today I don't actually have a lot of announcements because things have been going pretty smoothly and there is nothing new to speak about. So let's dive right in to villains and plot. I have a list of four pitfalls to avoid when structuring your villain and your plot when you go to do the rough draft of your book or the outline of your book. The first thing to avoid is the hierarchy structure of the villain and his henchman. The reason why this is kind of hard to avoid is because we like it. We like the idea that once a bad guy is defeated that there is another bad guy who is stronger, who is more talented, who has more magical powers. And then once that guy is defeated, perhaps there's a third bad guy who is the villain's right-hand man, until we finally get to the bad guy himself. The reason why this is so popular is because it's easy to see, and it's easy to structure a series around. You have book one of the little bad guy and then it just gets a little bit bigger until book three or book five or book seven or however many books are in your series. You finally get to nail the main villain who is behind this entire problem the whole time. It is also a popular way to structure video games. You have the bad guys and you have the henchman and the little fodder guys that are easy to pick off and are not a very big threat.
[00:03:29] And in doing those things, the main character, which is you, gains experience points and gets a little stronger and learns some new things. And onward, the story progresses. However, this is becoming cliche. This is certainly a trope that has been done time and time again. And it is more common to see villains more like people.
[00:03:58] It is more common to see heroes more like people. Like I mentioned in the previous episode, it is more common to see a flawed, main character and to see a main character make some dark decisions. At the same time, it is becoming more common to see a villain with redeemable qualities, or to see a villain who is completely justified in what they are doing.
[00:04:23] And so this structure, this hierarchy structure that you have to beat down the fodder before getting to level two before getting to level three on up to the main big boss at the end, isn't new. It's not fresh. And so find another way to structure the bad guys in your story, especially in your trilogy or in the number of books that you're going to be writing that are related to each other. There are a lot of ways to do it. And at the end of this episode, I'm going to share with you one of the most delightful ways that I found in all of the fantasy fiction that I've read in presenting to you actually a group of five books.
[00:05:10] It is a quintet. So stay tuned until the very end to get that little tidbit. So the second pitfall to avoid ,and granted, you should be avoiding this anyway, it's a thing called plot devices. A plot device, and the reason why I bring this up, this is actually kind of bigger, fundamental writing, but a plot device is a thing that happens only because the writer needs it to happen because something else needs to happen later.
[00:05:48] A plot device is usually pretty contrived. It sometimes can come out of nowhere and all that it serves is for the plot to move forward or to save the main character or whatever. It's these little unbelievable things that happen in order for bigger things to happen later, but that is all the good that they serve.
[00:06:16]One of the most popular plot devices that I can think of is actually in the Chronicles of Narnia in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The children are there in this barren wasteland of frozen ice, and suddenly Santa Claus appears and Santa comes bearing gifts of lethal weapons.
[00:06:39] If you think about it, Santa does not belong in Narnia. There are not other people like Santa Claus that populate Narnia. There are granted a lot of other fantastical creatures and a lot of fun other characters, but Santa Claus himself does not belong there. And the fact that he appears at the very best time and comes bringing gifts that all of these children are going to need to save the day at the end is the biggest plot convenience I have read in a long time.
[00:07:14] Granted it's in a children's story and. We can have more plot conveniences in children's stories if we want to. That's fine. But in the more grownup stuff you get to pay attention to your plot conveniences. Some people call this plot armor. It's when the main character simply has to live because otherwise the book will end too soon.
[00:07:36] And so against all odds, they always win. Or against all odds, they and their central group of friends will win or will come out unscathed and you simply know that just because you know the story. And so it makes things predictable and it makes things unbelievable to a certain degree.
[00:07:59] The reason why I bring this up on a villain's episode is because not only do you get to think of your main character when you are mapping out your plot, but you also get to think about your villain. When your plot is filled with these conveniences and these devices that make the main character always win, you get to see on the other side of that coin or the other edge of that sword, what it does to your villain, or how it paints your villain with these plot devices. Sometimes it can make your villain come across as pretty dumb or come across as way too complicated, way too overthinking things and not realistic in that way. Or it can cheapen such a better deeper experience with that villain if those plot conveniences were not included.
[00:09:03] One of these favorites that I like to call out in fantasy fiction specifically, I like to refer to as the wild card. It's when the forces of evil are upon us. And it looks like the forces of evil are going to win. And we are all in dire straights, but something out of nowhere happens. And it's big and it was not foreshadowed to begin with and it's unexpected and it's a surprise. And to an inexperienced reader, it's probably super awesome. But to the rest of us, it earns kind of,, an eye roll. I read a book once, I don't necessarily want to call it out on the podcast, but there was a situation similar to what I described. The forces of evil were about to conquer this special, magical place. And from out of nowhere, there came a spell that transformed one of the types of magical creatures living in this place into these big warriors. And so these little rinky-dink fairies were transformed into this army of warriors. And the spell happened, and it lasted just long enough for the forces of evil to be abated and for the day to be saved. And then the fairies shrank back down to their normal little fairy selves. The reason why I bring up these things is because you have thought all of these wonderful things through with the villain, you have thought about the awesome ways that the villain is going to come in and threaten the safety of this or that magical place.
[00:10:52] And to throw in a wild card ending really cheapens all of the effort and all of the believability and all of the energy that you have spent trying to build up a believable villain. And instead the reader sits back and realizes that regardless, the villain will not win and it can take them out of the story and it can convince them not to carry on with the series or even to finish the book.
[00:11:24]The fourth pit fall that you get to pay attention to is the villain's backstory. Backstories are wonderful. I love a good backstory. However, it has been used a million times that every bad guy was once an abused little boy or girl. Every bad guy, every bad girl, every bad woman was abused when they were little. And while psychologically all of that makes sense, it is also something that is commonly found in all of literature. And what it can do is make excuses for the villain. If you want the villain to simply be bad and to simply be awful, there are other ways to develop backstory to that. There can be something amiss when they were little and they were involved in things that simply fostered that thing that was amiss. There can be interests that they were exposed to when they were little that carried with them as they learned magic or as they learned business, if it's modern contemporary fiction, or it can be a lot of different things like that.
[00:12:35] If you want them to be abused when they're little, that is fine. It is something that happens all the time in fiction, though, when we do get a good backstory to a villain. And I have read enough and read a wide enough variety of fiction to tell you that not every vicious villain and awful person and person who is threatening to destroy worlds or whatever, not all of them were abused by their dads. There are other ways to do it and to find those ways is fascinating and it makes the writing so much better and so much easier to follow along. And it really catches your interest and holds it there when it is new and it is fresh.
[00:13:24] So let me take a moment with this book review. I'm going to be reviewing the Cleric Quintet by R.A. Salvatore. R.A. Salvatore was one of my very favorite authors when I was in high school. I have since, now that I've gained some more experience in reading and in writing, I've come to find that sometimes his magic systems are a little bit convenient, but I'm going to talk about this particular series of five books. They're five short-ish books, I believe, or five average sized books. It's not a monstrous series, but the Cleric Quintet is about this young man named Cadderly who studies at a library and comes to learn the big mysteries of magic. And over the course of five books, you see it happen and you really come to understand just how powerful this young man becomes.
[00:14:25] And it was a really cool progression to see it over five books and to see actual power happen and to see the learning of spells or the manipulation of matter, or whatever, was really delightful to me. At the same time though, and this is the type of villain that I love to see the very, very most, this villain starts out with Cadderly studying at the same library. This structure didn't have a school. It didn't have classes, it didn't have teachers. It didn't have that type of structure. It just had this library of knowledge. And everybody from everywhere came to this library to learn and to gain more knowledge that way.
[00:15:10]There was another young man studying alongside Cadderly, they weren't friends. And this young man is kind of an awful person. He wasn't talented. He was clumsy. Granted Cadderly was also clumsy. But over the progression of these five books, you watch this untalented jealous, horrible man, young man gradually become the darkest, most threatening monster that comes about in book five. And it is delightful to see, and it was so fun to read. And that is the type of villain that I appreciate the very most, where you see perhaps an amount of foreshadowing, you see character traits and you see people in the very beginning of the story and you think maybe this guy is going to end up being something bad or doing something awful.
[00:16:10] And over the course of it all, you see all of the you see the background, you see the story unfold, you see the reason why this person chooses to be where they are. And you understand their attitudes toward this or that. It makes the villain so much more believable and so much more awesome.
[00:16:33] It is this type of villain that I am choosing to write in my current work in progress, or at least as part of it. Right now I have two half finished books. In one of them, that's totally how the villain is going to be unfolded. And the other one it's going to be different.
[00:16:49] But that is how it is in this book. So if you are interested in checking out the Cleric Quintet, please follow the affiliate links in the description of this podcast episode. And yeah, I give this, I give this entire work of five books. R.A. Salvatore has written a lot of books. And like I said, he was one of my favorites in high school.
[00:17:13]He was one of the Forgotten Realms authors. Did wonderful stuff. One of his characters Drizzt Do'Urden, who was a dark elf, is considered to be one of the most liked in all of fantasy fiction. And this is written by him. So go ahead and follow those links.
[00:17:30] I give these five books, easily, four out of five stars. They were so much fun. But I reflect on some of the things in there and there was an amount of convenience to them, but it was a great read. It was fast paced and the magic and the fighting in RA Salvatore's writing is so much fun. It is so easy to get caught up in all of those wonderful moments.

CANTLON'S CORNER: RANGERS' PROSPECTS HAVE A SOLID TRAVERSE CITY TOURNEY
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The New York Rangers prospects finished up their time competing in the Traverse City tournament on a high note and left with a 3-1 record. The team showed the promise they have and equally the work they still need to do. It started off with a rocky performance in losing 6-2 to the prospects that Rangers President, John Davidson, brought in when he ran the Columbus Blue Jackets. Brett Kemp (Medicine Hat Tigers-WHL), a training camp, invitee scored both goals on the Rangers' highly-touted Russian goalie, Igor Shesterkin, who had a tough North American debut. There were too many turnovers, especially in the neutral zone, and it proved costly for the young Rangers squad. Game 2 went much better as the prospects rebounded from the loss and beat the Dallas Stars, 7-4. Defenseman Adam Fox had a stellar five-point scoring effort that included the eventual game-winning goal, his second of the game, at 4:45 of the third period. Fox also contributed the primary assist on Karl Henriksson's first goal and he began the scoring sequence for his defense partner, Yegor Rykov’s, power play goal just 1:27 into the second period. VitaIi Kravtsov, the Rangers 2018 first-round pick, earned three assists, with two of them being the primary helper. Ryan Dmowskli (Old Lyme) picked up the final two goals. Fox assisted on his empty netter. Goalie Adam Huska (UCONN) had a strong game with 24 saves. Game 3 of the tourney saw the Rangers score three goals in the third period as first-round draft pick (2nd overall), Finnish winger, Kaapo Kakko, in his debut game scored the winning goal and had two primary assists in a four-point effort. The Rangers scored two powerplay goals just 1:38 apart in the third period off Kravtsov's stick. The Rangers had a five-minute powerplay that carried over from late in the second period after a high-hit by the Stars' Drake Pilon (no relation to former NHL defenseman with the Islanders, Rich Pilon) on Lewis Zerter-Gossage, who was left dazed and bloodied. Kravtsov's first tally came from off the right-wing into a wide-open net, as he converted Kakko’s pass from behind the goal line on the left-wing side at 1:06. Then came the second goal at 2:44. It was a high end, top-shelf play from atop the left-wing circle. From the right-wing circle, Kakko sent a perfect cross-ice pass through the box putting it right in the perfect spot for Kravtsov, who was in full stride and buried it past goalie, Hunter Jones. The Rangers tied the score at three with 1:37 left in regulation. Kakko again tallied, this time from down as he low-banked a shot that went off some legs in front of the net and popped up in mid-air an. The California Kid, Patrick Newell, exercised some fine hand-eye coordination putting it in out of mid-air. The game-winner was the whipped cream on top of the sundae as Kakko burst down the right-wing, circled the net, moved through the offensive zone untouched and went back to the right-wing. Then again, he made another rush from behind the net and this time put a backhanded wraparound on the net from the left wing beat and Jones to the shortside at 2:48 for the game-winner. The team mobbed number 45. The Rangers concluded their tournament play with a 5-3 win over the prospects of the defending Stanley Cup champion, St. Louis Blues. Dmowski kicked off the Rangers scoring at 4:31 of the first period. The goal turned out to be the first of three for the Blueshirts in the period. The Rangers eventually built a 4-0 lead early in the second period as Nick Jones with a goal and an assist scored on the powerplay at 5:47. Swedish second-round pick from June, Karl Henriksson, had another strong game. He had three assists, two of them the primary kind, as well as points in three of the four games. Newell scored again while Finnish rearguard, Tarmo Reunanen, tallied his first two points on assists. Huska again demonstrated a strong presence. NOTES: Former Hartford Wolf Pack forward, Corey Locke, 35, has announced his retirement after playing seven pre-season games with HC Dynamo Pardubice (Czech Republic-CEL). Locke played just one season for the Wolf Pack in 2009-10 and led the Wolf Pack with 85 points, the third-best in the AHL. Only he and Chris Bourque, who also played just one season, are the only Wolf Pack players to have finished in the Top 10 in league scoring in the past ten years. His AHL totals are 639 games played with 182 goals and 568 points. Landon Ferraro, the son of Hartford Whaler great, Ray Ferraro, had an injury riddled year with the Iowa Wild (12-2-3-5-14) last year, signs a training camp PTO deal with Vancouver. Ex-Sound Tiger, Matt Pistilli leaves Lowen Frankfurt (Germany DEL-2) and returns to Esbjerg Energy (Denmark-DHL). Another ex-Sound Tiger, CJ Stretch, departs Orli Znojmo (Czech Republic-EBEL) to MAC Ujbuda (Slovakia-SLEL). Greg Squires (Brunswick School) goes from Kunlun (China-KHL) to EC Graz (Austria-EBEL). Chris Izmirlian (Yale University) departs the Greenville Swamp Rabbits (ECHL) to head to the Rapid City Rush (ECHL). Drew Blackmun, of Northeastern (HE), transfers to Union College (HE). He will sit out this season as per the NCAA transfer rule. Cam MacDonald (Selects Academy at South Kent Prep) who plays for Sioux City (USHL) commits to Boston College (HE) for 2022-23. Ex-Pack and former Ranger #1 draft, Bobby Sanguinetti, heads to Europe to continue playing signing a deal with EHC Munich (Germany-DEL) who's roster features twelve former AHL'ers including three ex-Wolf Pack in Chris Bourque and Blake Parlett. Sanguinetti played with the defending AHL Calder Cup champion, Charlotte Checkers, last year. He played 150 games with Hartford netting six goals and adding 69 assists. He was drafted as the Rangers first pick (21st overall) in 2006. He along with Jordan Subban of the Toronto Marlies (Dornbirner EC Austria-EBEL) become the 69th and 70th AHL'ers from last season to sign in Europe and Asia. Read the full article

But no battle is won alone, and before the Reds may rise as one, Mare must side with the boy who broke her heart in order to defeat the boy who almost broke her. Cal’s powerful Silver allies, alongside Mare and the Scarlet Guard, prove a formidable force. But Maven is driven by an obsession so deep, he will stop at nothing to have Mare as his own again, even if it means demolishing everything—and everyone—in his path.
War is coming, and all Mare has fought for hangs in the balance. Will victory be enough to topple the Silver kingdoms? Or will the little lightning girl be forever silenced?
In the epic conclusion to Victoria Aveyard’s stunning series, Mare must embrace her fate and summon all her power… for all will be tested, but not all will survive.

My fingers curl against the arms of my throne, begging to carve the iron into ragged pieces. At home, the many metal galleries of Ridge House made for easy therapy. I could destroy in peace. Channel my fresh rage into ___ changing ___, without having to worry about what anyone else might think. I wonder if I might find some privacy here in Corvium to do just that. The promise of such release keeps me sane. I scratch the clawed ring on my chair, metal on metal. Soft enough that only Mother hears. She can’t scold me for it, not in front of the rest of our strange council. If I have to be on display, I might as well enjoy the few advantages. Finally, I wrench my thoughts away from Anabel’s vulnerable neck and Elane’s absence. If I’m going to figure a way out of my father’s plan, I have to at least pay attention.

Week 4 roundup: Tumblr’s text editor poo-ed itself
I had hours of unpublished work for this week’s roundup post all lost because the text editor managed to bug out.
Because Tumblr doesn’t save revisions of a draft post, I’m unable to recover my unpublished work.
Lession learnt: remember to save your work constantly because Tumblr is shite.
Out of frustration, I’m only posting a link dump to some security news for this week...

Sidney Crosby at 30: Ranking his 30 greatest hockey moments (so far)
Sidney Crosby hit the big 3-0 on Monday, as “Sid The Kid” officially became an ironic nickname.
The Pittsburgh Penguins captain has been playing hockey for more than half his life, as his first season with Dartmouth in the NSMHL came at age 14.
Sixteen years later, Crosby is the best player in the world (work on that defense, Connor) with three Stanley Cups, two Olympic golds, a IIHF gold, world junior goal, whatever they gave out for the World Cup of Hockey and so much more. He has 1,027 points in 782 games, with 383 goals. He’s pretty good.
With all that Crosby’s accomplished, it’s hard to narrow the list down to 30 moments in Crosby’s hockey life. But here they are, ranked for your enjoyment.
30. Youngest player to win a IIHF World Championship scoring title
When Sidney Crosby was 18 and the Penguins weren’t playing for the Stanley Cup in, like, every season, Crosby represented Canada at the 2006 IIHF World Championships. He scored 16 points in nine games – including a point in Canada’s first eight games – to win top forward honors and set a IIHF record for the youngest player to lead the tournament in points.
29. Gets Referenced in an SNL Joke
youtube
It’s not that Sidney Crosby was name-dropped in a joke on “Saturday Night Live” in 2012. It’s that someone in that writer’s room acknowledged that Andy Samberg is a Sid doppelgänger.
Did the joke bomb? Eh, we’ll blame it on Lindsay Lohan’s delivery.
28. Crosby’s 66 in 41
In 2010-11, Crosby had 66 points in 41 games to lead the Penguins in scoring (and lead the NHL with a 1.61 points-per-game average). He set an NHL record in the process: No other player led his team in scoring in so few games played in a non-lockout season.
27. Sidney On The Street
youtube
Notable mainly for one of the greatest hockey players to ever live just standing around while teen Jack Johnson tries to make time with some unimpressed ladies.
26. Penguins Rookie Record
The Penguins have had a few decent offense rookies through the years, but none better than Crosby when it comes to total points: His 102 points were two better than Mario Lemieux (100 in 1984-85). Sure, Mario got him in points-per-game, having played 73 games to Sid’s 81, but in Crosby’s defense he had to play against goalies that knew what they were doing and wore actual padding.
25. Homers At PNC Park
youtube
Proving he could have been the best hockey/baseball star since Tom Glavine, Sid went yard during batting practice at the Pirates’ stadium in what we imagine is Doc Emrick’s wet dream.
24. Crosby scores in OT vs. Lightning
youtube
Sid’s only playoff overtime goal won Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final for the Penguins to knot their series with the Lightning, and it was a key point in the series.
23. Crosby Checks Boris Valabik’s Undercarriage
youtube
The moment we all realized how delightfully sneaky dirty Crosby was (with apologies to Mark Methot on the “delightfully” part). Sid speed-bagged Boris Valabik of the Atlanta Thrashers in a moment that would have made Ric Flair proud.
22. Rookie With 100 Points and 100 PIMs
OK, maybe we should have seen the “dirty” part from miles away. Crosby had 102 points and 110 penalty minutes in 2005-06 – the first NHL rookie to record 100 points and 100 penalty minutes in a season. He had 55 minor penalties and no majors. So, still a Good Boy.
21. ESPYs, 2010
While no one will mistake the ESPY Awards with anything as prestigious as, say, the NHL Awards (although admittedly the stage banter is much better), Sidney Crosby has dominated ESPN’s exercise in largess since entering the League. We’ll put the spotlight on his 2010 win for Best NHL Player, which was his fourth straight win and fourth total one – one more than Lemieux had for his career.
Please note that the “selection committee” voting process for the ESPYs ended in 2004, and was replaced by an Internet fan vote. Crosby won from 2007-2010 and 2013-14 and 2016-17, forever dispelling the notion that he won’t be winning any popularity contests.
20. World Junior Gold
Crosby had nine points in six games as the Canadian “all-star team” rolled to 2005 World Junior gold. The only downer was that he had but one assist in their 6-1 rout of Russia in the final.
19. Crosby Exhibits Actual Personality In Commercial For Famed Canadian Doughnut Shop
youtube
Give the assist to Cole Harbour’s Nathan MacKinnon for being the John C. Reilly to Sid’s nascent Will Ferrell.
18. MVP, World Cup of Hockey
Crosby’s line with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand was one of the best things about the World Cup of Hockey, along with Team North America and Ralph Kruger. Canada could have won this tournament with its fifth string, but Sid’s 10 points in six games was good enough to MVP honors.
17. That Contract
In a league where each new superstar contract leads to a slew of new cap headaches for their teams, Crosby’s 12-year deal with an AAV of $8.7 million (thanks, numerophobia!) set up the Penguins to contend for Stanley Cups through its conclusion in 2025.
16. Hey, Look, Jay Leno
youtube
Not only did Sid get a chance to shoot pucks into a dryer on “The Tonight Show” but he got to meet ROB SCHNEIDER in the process, guys…
15. Winning the Richard Trophy in 2017
It wasn’t the best season for goal-scoring – Alex Ovechkin going MIA in the Richard race didn’t help – but Crosby’s 44 goals were good enough for his second Rocket trophy.
14. Winning the Art Ross in 2007
Sid’s 120 points were six better than Joe Thornton to lead the league and net him his first Art Ross trophy in a (spoiler) MVP season. He was the youngest player to win the Art Ross.
13. Sid The Kid Goes Back-To-Back 100s
Crosby had 102 points as a rookie and 120 points as a sophomore, becoming the youngest player in NHL history to record two consecutive 100-point seasons. Would McDavid have broken that if he were healthy as a rookie? A great “what if?”
12. Winning Richard Trophy in 2010
Crosby broke 50 goals for the only time in his career to capture his first Richard Trophy – an award he shared with Steven Stamkos, one goal better than Ovechkin.
11. Winning the Stanley Cup in 2009
Crosby had 31 points in 24 games for the Penguins during their run to the 2009 Stanley Cup, including a playoff-best 15 goals. Alas, Evgeni Malkin’s 36 points in 24 games netted him the Conn Smythe. But Crosby would get the better of another Russian …
10. Game 7 vs. Washington
In one of the greatest playoff series of the modern era, Crosby dueled with Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals for seven games in 2009 – including Game 2 in which both players had hat tricks. But in Game 7, in Washington, Crosby had two goals and an assist in a 6-1 rout to eliminate the Capitals – including the game’s opening goal.
9. Winning the Hart Trophy in 2014
Crosby’s 104-point season made him a runaway winner of his second Hart, getting 128 first-place votes. Ryan Getzlaf was second with five. That said …
8. Winning the Hart Trophy in 2007
… Crosby’s 2007 Hart Trophy, at 19 years old, was a remarkable achievement. His 120-point season was 35 points better than Malkin, i.e. basically one Colby Armstrong’s worth of points.
7. That Breakaway Vs. Lundqvist in Sochi
youtube
From a production standpoint, Crosby didn’t have the best tournament in Sochi with three points in six games. But he saved the best for last, including this breakaway goal against Henrik Lundqvist in the gold medal game – Crosby’s first goal of the Olympics. That made it 2-0, and put a dagger in Sweden.
6. Winning the Conn Smythe in 2016
Crosby had 19 points in 24 games, including two assists in the Game 6 elimination of the San Jose Sharks. That was good enough to earn Phil Kessel’s Conn Smythe in winning Crosby’s second Stanley Cup.
5. Scoring In a Snow Globe
youtube
The first Winter Classic remains one of the most picturesque hockey games in NHL history, what with the snow falling and all. (The constant Zamboni delays are best left out of this memory.) Crosby scored the shootout game-winner against Ryan Miller on Jan. 1, 2008 to give the Penguins the win over the Buffalo Sabres in snowy Ralph Wilson Stadium. Remember those names…
4. Winning the Conn Smythe in 2017
Crosby’s 27 points didn’t lead the playoffs, but the sheer will of his performance drove the Penguins to their second straight Stanley Cup. That including a dominant three-assist effort in their Game 5 rout of the Nashville Predators. Crosby had 13 points in his final 11 playoff games, and with a second straight playoff MVP, entered a new echelon on greatness.
3. The Sidney Crosby Lottery
The NHL literally rewrote the rules because Sidney Crosby was available in the entry draft. After the 2005 lockout, the NHL decided to award the No. 1 overall pick through a revamped draft lottery, dubbed the “Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes.”
All 30 teams were entered into a lottery, with each team having as many as three or as few as one ball to be drawn based on playoff qualification or draft lottery wins over the previous three seasons. The Penguins, who lost the previous lottery that resulted in Alex Ovechkin going to the Capitals, had around a six-percent chance at Crosby. Yet they won, and the rest as they say is Brian Burke being infuriated by the process after settling for Bobby Ryan.
2. The Comeback
As we celebrate Sidney Crosby’s 30th birthday, and his incredible career, let’s pause for a moment to reflect on (a) how lucky we are that Crosby’s been reasonably healthy, by comparison, for the last few years and (b) how much it sucks that we didn’t get to see him at 100 percent (or at all) for much if this career.
That’s why we’re putting his return in Nov. 2011, after 11 months out of action that totaled 61 games, so high on the list. It was a moment the hockey world celebrated because, for a time, we were all a bit afraid that we’d never see that day arrive. (Best of health, Sid.)
1. The Golden Goal
youtube
With due respect to the other 29 accomplishments on this list, this is a Canadian hockey star, scoring in overtime in the Winter Olympic final, on Canadian soil, to win the gold medal over the United States. There’s no telling what Sidney Crosby will do in his years past his 30th birthday. But because of the unique conditions of this accomplishment, there’s no topping it.

Is NIU still the safest bet in the MAC, despite all this change?
The Huskies haven’t made a bad hire in about 25 years. Can Thomas Hammock win big like his predecessors?
There are worse parting gifts than another conference title.
After six seasons, Rod Carey left to take the Temple job when it opened for a second time this offseason. He left accomplishments that any successor would do well to match: two MAC titles, four division crowns, 52 wins. He held the fort as NIU had to deal with its third coaching change in seven years and offered some stability. NIU’s last four hires have each enjoyed at least one season of double-digits wins and a brief stay in the AP top 25. Carey continued that. He even won the MAC on his way out the door.
Still, despite the undeniable success, it felt as if NIU and Carey were ready for something new. And it was hard to deny that the Huskies were pretty far away from their peak.
Carey inherited a program coming off a 12-win season and its first major bowl bid (an Orange Bowl berth against Florida State) under Dave Doeren. Carey kept the wins coming for a while, but the product was slipping. After ranking 34th in S&P+ in Doeren’s final season, the Huskies fell to 56th, then 72nd, then 82nd. They went 23-5 in his first two years but thereafter just 29-24, with an average ranking of 80.8.
That’s decent living for a MAC team, but while the defense was peaking with two top-30 Def. S&P+ finishes in 2017-18, the NIU calling card fell flat. After scoring an average Off. S&P+ ranking of 45th from 2010-16, the Huskies fell to 112th in 2017 and 117th in 2018.
NIU has long been the safest bet in the MAC West, but 2018’s title run was a product of a shaky division. After an 0-3 start in non-conference play, The Huskies won their first five conference games by a total of 23 points, smoked Toledo to clinch the division, then threw it into cruise control and lost tight games against Miami (Ohio) and WMU. They ended up a game ahead of EMU, Toledo, and WMU.
In the MAC title game, they played possum against a Buffalo that was superior on paper, then charged back 20-0 over the final 16 minutes to score a 30-29 win. They got pummeled by UAB in the Boca Raton Bowl, and three weeks later, Carey left for Philadelphia.
In a strange way, Thomas Hammock faces a high bar and a low one at the same time. NIU hasn’t finished better than 75th in S&P+ since 2014, which suggests room for growth, but the Huskies have also won their division seven times in the last nine years.
The hire of Hammock appears to acknowledge the need for change, though. With how good the defense has been, NIU could have attempted to promote defensive coordinator Jeff Knowles or predecessor Kevin Kane (who took over the SMU defense in 2018). Instead, for better or worse, the school elected for a fresh start.
Hammock is an NIU grad who spent a couple of seasons at his alma mater (running backs coach in 2005-06) before moving up (four years as Minnesota’s RBs coach, three as Wisconsin’s), then to the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. The 37-year-old New Jersey native is returning to the home of the Corn Fest for his first head coaching stint. He’s the first African-American head coach in NIU history.
Hammock is still completing his staff amid recruiting, but his first hire was inspired. He brought South Dakota State offensive coordinator Eric Eidsness, one of college football’s more interesting offensive minds, east.
But his first team will have to deal not only with a change in culture, but also with a potential shift in strengths. The offense, so weak the last two years, returns almost everyone, while the league’s best defense loses a few difference-makers.
Offense
If your only NIU exposure in 2018 was the MAC Championship, you’re a little bit confused by the summary above. As shaky as NIU’s offense has been, you saw the best version of it in Detroit.
Quarterback Marcus Childers went 21-for-33 for 300 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception, and not including sacks he rushed 11 times for 80 yards.
Receiver Spencer Tears made amazing catch after amazing catch, snaring two huge touchdowns along the way. Tears and D.J. Brown (combined: 15 targets, 10 catches, 157 yards, four touchdowns) almost inarguably outplayed the magnificent Buffalo receiver duo of Anthony Johnson and K.J. Osborn (23 targets, 10 catches, 190 yards, two touchdowns).
NIU looked brilliant when it counted the most. For most of the rest of the season ... it did not.
I mean, just look at that offensive radar above. The Huskies ranked 124th in Passing S&P+, saved by a great defense and a run game that moved the chains just enough to keep the D in favorable field position. Even with the game in Detroit, Childers’ passer rating was an abysmal 112.4 for the season, well outside of the national top 100.
There’s potential, though. And if Eidsness proved anything at SDSU, it’s that he’ll adapt to the talent. He oversaw a Jackrabbits offense that produced the nation’s first back-to-back-to-back 2,000-yard rusher (Zach Zenner) from 2012-14, then produced a three time Payton Award finalist in quarterback Taryn Christion, who finished his career with more than 11,000 passing yards and 100 passing touchdowns.
SDSU’s offenses played with a physical edge that could work pretty well in DeKalb. Tre Harbison rushed for 1,000 yards last year and carries some heft (227 pounds), and backup Marcus Jones gained at least four yards on 54 percent of his carries. Childers is pretty burly, too (6’0, 222) and doesn’t mind lowering his shoulder at times.
Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports
Marcus Childers
The line has to replace all-conference performers in tackle Max Scharping and center Luke Shively, but four players return after starting at least eight games last year, and three are at least 6’4, 306 pounds. There will be quite a bit of young heft on the two-deep as well.
NIU’s success will come down to whether the Huskies can pass when they need to, and it’s hard to predict that going well. Childers’ sack and interception rates were too high, and his completion rate was too low, and now his top two receivers (Wesley and D.J. Brown) are gone. Can Tears bottle up his Detroit performance? Can the Huskies get something steadier out of sophomore targets Dennis Robinson and Cole Tucker? Might three-star JUCO Tyrice Richie make an immediate difference? Or one of a couple of mid-three-star freshmen (Fabian McCray, Justin Clark)?
The defense will probably regress, but I’m not sure the offense can make up for it.
Defense
When it comes to knocking you off-schedule, then harassing your quarterback, NIU had maybe the best mid-major defense in 2018. Among Group of 5 programs, the Huskies trailed only Fresno State, Appalachian State, and Marshall in Def. S&P+, and they were sixth overall in Standard Downs S&P+.
End Sutton Smith was the No. 1 difference maker here. In two seasons, he posted otherworldly stats: 56 tackles for loss, 29 sacks, 53.5 run stuffs. That’s nearly a team’s worth of production from one guy, and with little to prove at the college level, he declared for the NFL draft.
Was he the reason for NIU’s success, an Ndamukong Suh-like talent around which an opponent had to game plan, opening up opportunities? Or was he merely the best player on a defense that boasted other havoc creators?
The answer will dictate whether NIU is a MAC contender in 2019. Smith, fellow end Josh Corcoran (who sneaked in for 10 sacks), and corners Jalen Embry and Tifonte Hunt are gone, but that’s almost literally it. NIU is scheduled to return:
Tackles Weston Kramer, Jack Heflin, and Ben LeRoy, who combined for 15 TFLs, nine sacks, and 24 run stuffs on the interior and might have been NIU’s best defenders after Smith and Embry.
OLB Antonio Jones-Davis, who flew around and recorded 14.5 TFLs, six pass breakups, and another 19.5 run stuffs. Two other senior LBs (Kyle Pugh and Lance Deveaux Jr.) combined for another 10 TFLs.
Every safety, including seniors Mykelti Williams and Trayshon Foster (combined: 104.0 tackles, 4.5 TFLs, and 10 passes defensed).
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports
Antonio Jones-Davis
You can’t lose Smith and both corners and not regress a bit. But the new coordinator, whoever he ends up being, will still have more to work with than most MAC coordinators, I think.
Special Teams
Special teams is one area where Hammock can quickly outdo his predecessor, but it might take a year or two to develop the right personnel. NIU ranked 10th in Special Teams S&P+ in Doeren’s last season but never topped 86th under Carey.
Place-kicker Andrew Gantz was the bright spot of last year’s 102nd-ranked unit, but he’s gone. Punter Matt Ference didn’t allow many returns but still ranked only 93rd in punt efficiency (which was solid compared to the kick return game).

The numbers like what NIU has. The Huskies will begin projected second overall in the MAC, just behind WMU and just ahead of Toledo and others. You could make the case that, until Smith went pro, they were a year ahead of schedule in winning the conference last year, considering what they were scheduled to bring back this year.
That said, there are plenty of red flags. The defense has almost nowhere to go but down, and while I really like Hammock’s offensive coordinator hire, it’s worth pointing out that Hammock hasn’t coached at the college level since 2013 and hasn’t coached in the MAC since 2006. There might be some adjustment time, especially since the Huskies have to travel to the teams projected third, fourth, and fifth in the conference.
It’s not hard to see the Husky on the helmet, though, and simply assume NIU will be alright. They’ve survived coaching changes before, and the last time they made an undeniably unsuccessful hire, Hammock was about 10 years old. If you want to give this team the benefit of the doubt, I can’t blame you.

A mixed grill of happy anticipation and dread
Anne Lamott: 12 Truths I Learned from Life and Writing TED talk (https://www.ted.com/talks/anne_lamott_12_truths_i_learned_from_life_and_writing/transcript)
My seven-year-old grandson sleeps just down the hall from me, and he wakes up a lot of mornings and he says,"You know, this could be the best day ever." And other times, in the middle of the night, he calls out in a tremulous voice, "Nana, will you ever get sick and die?"
00:31
I think this pretty much says it for me and most of the people I know, that we're a mixed grill of happy anticipation and dread. So I sat down a few days before my 61st birthday, and I decided to compile a list of everything I know for sure. There's so little truth in the popular culture, and it's good to be sure of a few things.
00:57
For instance, I am no longer 47, although this is the age I feel, and the age I like to think of myself as being. My friend Paul used to say in his late 70s that he felt like a young man with something really wrong with him.
01:13
(Laughter)
01:17
Our true person is outside of time and space, but looking at the paperwork, I can, in fact, see that I was born in 1954.My inside self is outside of time and space. It doesn't have an age. I'm every age I've ever been, and so are you, although I can't help mentioning as an aside that it might have been helpful if I hadn't followed the skin care rules of the '60s, which involved getting as much sun as possible while slathered in baby oil and basking in the glow of a tinfoil reflector shield.
01:51
(Laughter)
01:53
It was so liberating, though, to face the truth that I was no longer in the last throes of middle age, that I decided to write down every single true thing I know. People feel really doomed and overwhelmed these days, and they keep asking me what's true. So I hope that my list of things I'm almost positive about might offer some basic operating instructions to anyone who is feeling really overwhelmed or beleaguered.
02:24
Number one: the first and truest thing is that all truth is a paradox. Life is both a precious, unfathomably beautiful gift, and it's impossible here, on the incarnational side of things. It's been a very bad match for those of us who were born extremely sensitive. It's so hard and weird that we sometimes wonder if we're being punked. It's filled simultaneously with heartbreaking sweetness and beauty, desperate poverty, floods and babies and acne and Mozart, all swirled together. I don't think it's an ideal system.
03:04
(Laughter)
03:07
Number two: almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes --
03:13
(Laughter)
03:15
(Applause)
03:19
including you.
03:22
Three: there is almost nothing outside of you that will help in any kind of lasting way, unless you're waiting for an organ. You can't buy, achieve or date serenity and peace of mind. This is the most horrible truth, and I so resent it.But it's an inside job, and we can't arrange peace or lasting improvement for the people we love most in the world. They have to find their own ways, their own answers. You can't run alongside your grown children with sunscreen and ChapStick on their hero's journey. You have to release them. It's disrespectful not to. And if it's someone else's problem, you probably don't have the answer, anyway.
04:11
(Laughter)
04:12
Our help is usually not very helpful. Our help is often toxic. And help is the sunny side of control. Stop helping so much. Don't get your help and goodness all over everybody.
04:28
(Laughter)
04:31
(Applause)
04:33
This brings us to number four: everyone is screwed up, broken, clingy and scared, even the people who seem to have it most together. They are much more like you than you would believe, so try not to compare your insides to other people's outsides. It will only make you worse than you already are.
04:51
(Laughter)
04:56
Also, you can't save, fix or rescue any of them or get anyone sober. What helped me get clean and sober 30 years ago was the catastrophe of my behavior and thinking. So I asked some sober friends for help, and I turned to a higher power. One acronym for God is the "gift of desperation," G-O-D, or as a sober friend put it, by the end I was deteriorating faster than I could lower my standards.
05:24
(Laughter)
05:31
So God might mean, in this case, "me running out of any more good ideas."
05:37
While fixing and saving and trying to rescue is futile, radical self-care is quantum, and it radiates out from you into the atmosphere like a little fresh air. It's a huge gift to the world. When people respond by saying, "Well, isn't she full of herself," just smile obliquely like Mona Lisa and make both of you a nice cup of tea. Being full of affection for one's goofy, self-centered, cranky, annoying self is home. It's where world peace begins.
06:17
Number five: chocolate with 75 percent cacao is not actually a food.
06:23
(Laughter)
06:27
Its best use is as a bait in snake traps or to balance the legs of wobbly chairs. It was never meant to be considered an edible.
06:41
Number six --
06:43
(Laughter)
06:46
writing. Every writer you know writes really terrible first drafts, but they keep their butt in the chair. That's the secret of life. That's probably the main difference between you and them. They just do it. They do it by prearrangement with themselves. They do it as a debt of honor. They tell stories that come through them one day at a time, little by little. When my older brother was in fourth grade, he had a term paper on birds due the next day, and he hadn't started. So my dad sat down with him with an Audubon book, paper, pencils and brads -- for those of you who have gotten a little less young and remember brads -- and he said to my brother, "Just take it bird by bird, buddy. Just read about pelicans and then write about pelicans in your own voice. And then find out about chickadees, and tell us about them in your own voice. And then geese."
07:52
So the two most important things about writing are: bird by bird and really god-awful first drafts. If you don't know where to start, remember that every single thing that happened to you is yours, and you get to tell it. If people wanted you to write more warmly about them, they should've behaved better.
08:11
(Laughter)
08:14
(Applause)
08:19
You're going to feel like hell if you wake up someday and you never wrote the stuff that is tugging on the sleeves of your heart: your stories, memories, visions and songs -- your truth, your version of things -- in your own voice. That's really all you have to offer us, and that's also why you were born.
08:42
Seven: publication and temporary creative successes are something you have to recover from. They kill as many people as not. They will hurt, damage and change you in ways you cannot imagine. The most degraded and evil people I've ever known are male writers who've had huge best sellers. And yet, returning to number one, that all truth is paradox, it's also a miracle to get your work published, to get your stories read and heard. Just try to bust yourself gently of the fantasy that publication will heal you, that it will fill the Swiss-cheesy holes inside of you. It can't. It won't. But writing can. So can singing in a choir or a bluegrass band. So can painting community murals or birding or fostering old dogs that no one else will.
09:40
Number eight: families. Families are hard, hard, hard, no matter how cherished and astonishing they may also be.Again, see number one.
09:53
(Laughter)
09:54
At family gatherings where you suddenly feel homicidal or suicidal --
09:58
(Laughter)
10:00
remember that in all cases, it's a miracle that any of us, specifically, were conceived and born. Earth is forgiveness school. It begins with forgiving yourself, and then you might as well start at the dinner table. That way, you can do this work in comfortable pants.
10:20
(Laughter)
10:23
When William Blake said that we are here to learn to endure the beams of love, he knew that your family would be an intimate part of this, even as you want to run screaming for your cute little life. But I promise you are up to it. You can do it, Cinderella, you can do it, and you will be amazed.
10:45
Nine: food. Try to do a little better. I think you know what I mean.
10:53
(Laughter)
11:03
Number 10 --
11:04
(Laughter)
11:06
grace. Grace is spiritual WD-40, or water wings. The mystery of grace is that God loves Henry Kissinger and Vladimir Putin and me exactly as much as He or She loves your new grandchild. Go figure.
11:26
(Laughter)
11:28
The movement of grace is what changes us, heals us and heals our world. To summon grace, say, "Help," and then buckle up. Grace finds you exactly where you are, but it doesn't leave you where it found you. And grace won't look like Casper the Friendly Ghost, regrettably. But the phone will ring or the mail will come and then against all odds, you'll get your sense of humor about yourself back. Laughter really is carbonated holiness. It helps us breathe again and again and gives us back to ourselves, and this gives us faith in life and each other. And remember -- grace always bats last.
12:13
Eleven: God just means goodness. It's really not all that scary. It means the divine or a loving, animating intelligence,or, as we learned from the great "Deteriorata," "the cosmic muffin." A good name for God is: "Not me." Emerson said that the happiest person on Earth is the one who learns from nature the lessons of worship. So go outside a lot and look up. My pastor said you can trap bees on the bottom of mason jars without lids because they don't look up, so they just walk around bitterly bumping into the glass walls. Go outside. Look up. Secret of life.
12:59
And finally: death. Number 12. Wow and yikes. It's so hard to bear when the few people you cannot live without die. You'll never get over these losses, and no matter what the culture says, you're not supposed to. We Christians like to think of death as a major change of address, but in any case, the person will live again fully in your heart if you don't seal it off. Like Leonard Cohen said, "There are cracks in everything, and that's how the light gets in." And that's how we feel our people again fully alive.
13:39
Also, the people will make you laugh out loud at the most inconvenient times, and that's the great good news. But their absence will also be a lifelong nightmare of homesickness for you. Grief and friends, time and tears will heal you to some extent. Tears will bathe and baptize and hydrate and moisturize you and the ground on which you walk.
14:04
Do you know the first thing that God says to Moses? He says, "Take off your shoes." Because this is holy ground, all evidence to the contrary. It's hard to believe, but it's the truest thing I know. When you're a little bit older, like my tiny personal self, you realize that death is as sacred as birth. And don't worry -- get on with your life. Almost every single death is easy and gentle with the very best people surrounding you for as long as you need. You won't be alone. They'll help you cross over to whatever awaits us. As Ram Dass said, "When all is said and done, we're really just all walking each other home."
14:55
I think that's it, but if I think of anything else, I'll let you know.
15:00
Thank you.
15:01
(Applause)
