It's basically just like Re: Dracula, except instead of being written by a beloved Gothic fiction writer it's written by a super cool interdisciplinary astronomy-literature PhD student who studies how exoplanets are depicted in science fiction, instead of taking place over a century ago it takes place about five centuries in the future, instead of England it's the unforgiving vacuum of space, instead of Transylvania it's [REDACTED], instead of the Drac Pack it's a group of strangers on the deep-space equivalent of a Spirit Airlines flight (including but not limited to: a shifty outlaw, a space botanist, an indie band, a stowaway fandom teen, an unhelpful AI, and [REDACTED]), instead of being trapped in Dracula's castle it's being trapped in individual escape pods with faulty comms and random broadcasts and ads coming in and out, and instead of vampire hunting it's attempting to figure out what happened to their ship and what they're going to do next.

an: the idea for this literally choked me last night as i was watching spn, based off/ set in the last five minutes of ep 4x5 Monster Movie (the one w the dracula). v short, i wrote it in like 20 min at 2am hence barely checked. enjoy :)))

Pennsylvania was muggy, just enough that you could begin to doubt that the town had already slipped into autumn.

the hot sound of slurping suffocated the space again. it made the open air in front of the bar stuffy.

Dean sucked down the remnants of Jamie’s breakfast straight off her tongue.

Jamie. the woman of the hour, predecessor to the ones that would surely follow over in the next state.

he hadn’t spent the night in the motel, Dean. you were sure he was being stripped of his little Hansel and Gretel outfit somewhere across town where Jamie stayed. maybe he deserved it, he’d been drugged and then fragments of moments from electrocution most of the night with Dracula at the wheel.

he came up for barely a second of breath. “what can i say, i’m very patriotic.”

but that doesn’t mean you deserved it. to stand and have to endure the sight and sound. your face twisted in mild disgust and your neck craned up to meet Sam’s head perched at the top of his towering figure.

his face painted uncomfortable, his gaze pointedly moving over the people.

the blonde woman let off a sigh far too hot and loud for the crowded town square at nine in the morning, Dean gripped at the back of her jeans.

Sam’s eyes found you. he shrugged softly. his lips parted and you already knew he was seconds off from suggesting that maybe it would be more comfortable to wait by the car.

but you were never one to miss an opportunity for theatrics.

you reached up, far up, for the collar of your boyfriend’s khaki jacket: flushing him against you.

“oh Sam, you’re my knight in shining armor,” you gasped loudly, enough to stir but not part Dean’s engagement.

tugging gently to not hurt him, but enough to nudge him down: Sam leaned over so his forehead pressed against your own.

“you’re so brave, and so handsome—“

a velvet red flush leaked up from his chest and pooled in his cheeks.

your hands came to the side of his face, one branching slowly behind to tug on the hairs at the base of his neck and he worked hard not to whine - eyes flickering feign irritation at your batting lashes because you knew how much he loved that - but you pretended not to notice either move.

his grip found your waist. your nose bumped his, asking for a quiet consent, and he gently met your lips to satiate your bottomless need to tease Dean.

Sam wasn’t a fan of public displays of affection.

well, maybe that wasn’t the right way to phrase it. he just preferred when everything was just a little … slower. when you would tire yourself out from talking against his neck after a long day before falling against his lips where he’d find his whole body vibrating with his love for you.

but you did. you liked “PDA” and Sam wanted to indulge you when he could. you liked to hold his hand, keep him close between thickets of people. he liked that okay most of the time.

but he liked this too, to his surprise. maybe there was the additional aspect that it was for the main point of pissing off his brother.

but he couldn’t really decide on that. not when your tongue was nudging softly against his amidst a hot, fast kiss. you pulled off with a pop, pretending to fan yourself: slumping against his figure.

“and so intelligent, and with such a big … heart.”

you were sure you could fry an egg off Sam’s forehead the way his skin burnt beneath your hands but the little curl at the edge of his now slick mouth relieved you of the thought that maybe it was too much. that, and the fingers that dug what would soon be deep purple welts into the swell of your hips.

your tongue was already pushing past his lips again, halfway through the most pornographic moan you could muster for such a public space when Dean had evidently had his fill, of Jamie’s breakfast and of your dramatics.

“alright, alright. we’re done. you guys can stop face-fucking now … please.”

you drew back from a blood red Sammy, grinning.

Jamie was laughing, giggling pretty like how you imagined someone as good-looking as her would.

“just saying our goodbyes. you guys did save my life.” she smiled, laughs cooking to a soft bubble and wrapping her arms around herself. “travel safe okay?”

there was a murmur of nods and goodbyes and, for Dean, last pecks.

by the time you’d fallen into the backseat and Baby began to grumble beneath you, Dean was still huffing.

“for the record, you two only had to listen to me make out for five minutes. i can barely go take a thirty second shower without having to hear you two going at it like wild animals.”

Sam still hadn’t said a thing, but a soft shake of a chuckle rippled from beneath his jacket. you laughed until your ribs hurt.

“so dramatic, Deano.”

“makes two of us.”

Evening Evening everyone!

Sorry for the delay with which I share this, but I had a visit from Mr. Rona that forced me to be stranded on the couch for since last Thursday and made me work at a snail pace whenever I had enough strength to sit upright!

Anyway! allow me to finally share this :) Last week I was rereading small snippets of a Dracula!AU I created in 2020 (and I think I also shared a one-shot connected to that AU on my main blog, if I recall correctly) while listening to music, and I just HAD to draw this, because nothing makes me going like Jacob and Dottie in my Dracula!AU, with him literally crossing oceans of time to find her again. it's just UGH EVERYTHING for me. E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G.

ngl the tears kinda went down while artworking, but it was all worth it, because I loved every moment of it. The husband as well was immensely happy with how this turned out (Dracula is a favourite of his), so double happiness also for me :)

If this bloody headache will give me some respite, I would gladly share just a small snippet of the story :)

Dorian! His goal is to revive Basil using his angel core he’s kept on his person for years. He gets into contact with V since he’s rumored to know the most about angels.

V Dracula! His goal is to protect people from what he believes is to be the “evil” influence of angels. He’s lately been having his beliefs tested by Al’s relationship with their angel.

Al Van Helsing! Their goal is to rid the world of those who use their contracts with angels for “evil”. Al is extremely close with their angel, having saved one another’s lives. They have a frenemy relationship with V as they don’t agree with V’s idea that all angels are evil, but they understand that some contracts are better off not existing.

Dr. Henry Jekyll! His goal is to figure out the effects of prolonged exposure and consumption of Angel Ash. He got into contact with V whose goal of killing angels gives him relatively easy access to angel cores used to make angel ash.

Lazarus (aka Frankenstein’s Creature)! His goal is to find the balance between its human nature and its angel nature and who they is outside of the fragmented memories of the angel “Henry Clerval”. They’ve been hanging out with Al after Al helped contain an outburst of his angel power.

Erik (the Phantom)! His goal is to finish the “pinnacle of music” that his angel promised him when he was a child. V had attempted to kill his angel, but he was too slippery for V and they’re currently in a bit of a game of cat and mouse.

Death/Thanatos/Hel/Todd (nicknamed that by Dorian after he introduced himself as Der Tod). Its goal is to figure out why humans make contracts. She just pops in from time to time to learn what’s going on with the humans.

Aspen could. She has the advantage of being able to clock Dracula as an undead menace early on (Favoured Enemy my beloved), and the Bloodsucking Girlfriends aren't really her type. She shouldn't have much issue going lizard fashion either. Her main issue will be that she will try to save the baby, and if that comes to a knock-down Aspen v. Dracula brawl I don't know where it's going.

Athan is an odds-on bet, I'd say. His main strength is that he is not going into this trusting at all, and is also very capable of concealing his reactions enough that Dracula doesn't know he knows. The Girlfriends' voluptuousness is not particularly effective either. He's probably not likely to try climbing the wall, but he's smart enough to figure out an alternate exit. The trek back is going to be hard, though.

Talven is overconfident and that's his downfall. The Girlfriends lure him easily. He's likely to work out that there's something weird about Dracula, but he's too confident in his own abilities to stick around and outsmart him rather than getting the hell out of dodge. He will regret it, but probably not for long.

Hildebrandt is an odd one. She's the most capable of defeating Dracula one-on-one, and her holy powers give her a nice boost, but she's also unlikely to clock that there's something weird going on . She may well be lured by the Girlfriends. She will absolutely throw down over the baby, though, and then we're on.

Ellemer is well out of his element here, quite literally. He probably clocks Dracula as an Eldritch Being, but given that he's one himself that doesn't take him as far as it might. He can probably evade the Girlfriends also — it's not that they aren't attractive but he can picks up on their intentions in time to cut and run. He probably won't confront Dracula directly, but gliding wings are his friend so he's out the window and gone.

Tippet...oh, Tippet. She's not gonna make it. Maybe she fights over the baby, maybe she can't work out a way to escape before getting eaten, but she's unlikely to think of lizard fashioning it out and she has died. Badly.

GUITAR PRINCES [STYLE Series #004 - Muse (August 2010)]

The charm of the band lies in the “Prince”! From a super-girl's point of view, the history of the “Guitar Prince” from the beginning to the reign of Matthew Text: Sumi Imai

Matthew Bellamy is without a doubt one of the leading guitar heroes of our time. No one would argue with adding “princely” to that description (we welcome comments such as “from Wonderland?” or “from another planet?”). What are the requirements for a “prince” in the rock world? At my own discretion, I would say the first is beauty. This is a must. In addition, 2. a mysterious magic or unique talent that attracts the masses, 3. eccentric behaviour that creates legends & overwhelming persuasiveness that allows for almost anything, 4. pride and nobility, and 5. a partner that enhances the storytelling—it's even better if you have these.

With this in mind, I would like to take a quick look back at the lineage of prince-type guitarists (including bassists, but excluding “vocalists who occasionally play guitar as well”) from the 1970s to the present day. If you can't find a photo of a “prince” [in this article], please search for it on the Internet.

First of all, Jimmy Page, the guitar god of Led Zeppelin, who supported the glory of British hard rock in the 1970s, wrapped his slender body in mediaeval aristocratic style and dragon suits (black with dragon embroidery), etc. He was rumoured to be a thrifty man in Japan for some reason, and at the time, he was featured in many manga and readers' columns being known as the Miserly Prince. It was a prince's prerogative to be applauded for his eccentric clothing and his actions and words that became the source of stories. His magical fading is also an element that adds to his mystique. In this sense, Matthew is the heir to this lineage.

In the punk era of the late 70's, there were several cool, tall bassists who followed the rule (?) of bassists in punk bands: “Focus on the impact of Brooks [Tim Brooks of Bold], technique is secondary.” Paul Simonon of The Clash and Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols are two of the best examples. Paul's roughness, masculinity, and stylishness, and Sid's self-destructive danger, are worthy of the title as the Princes of Punk. At the same time, Paul Weller, who led The Jam, a three-piece band like Muse, was a sharp, mod-style British orthodoxy and the object of everyone's admiration. During his Style Council days, Weller even temporarily turned to the aesthetic school of one-lane slanted bangs. However, Weller's colleagues' plainness is a regrettable aspect of the band's storytelling. Although not as tall as the average height, Matthew's princeliness, playing ability, and singing ability as a whole are superior to all three of them.

The Goth of the early 80s is the root of the later Visual Kei. It sounds romantic, as if there were a lot of princes, but in fact, in the original Goth world, there was more of a horror component, and guitar princes who fulfilled the beauty aspect were rare. Among them, Daniel Ash (g) of Bauhaus, a pioneer of vampiric Gothic music, is the spearhead of decadence and aesthetics. Rowland S. Howard (g) was in charge of the army of beautiful men in “Beauty and the Beast” [probably based on the documentary film Autoluminescent: Rowland S. Howard] as The Birthday Party's Prince of Darkness. Blixa Bargeld, who was in another band with Nick Cave (vo), was the main member of Einstürzende Neubauten, a German industrial band, and was the Prince of Destruction with a slim body, tall stature, and good looks. When performing under the name Rocket Baby Dolls, Muse took the stage in black goth makeup, which I would love to see. I mean, isn't it a universal request to have Matthew dress up as Count Dracula (even if he doesn't want to)?

In the post-punk/New Wave era, there are many guitarists who are “talented, but a follower type?“ In the case of Echo & the Bunnymen, for example, the aura of the sharp-tongued Ian McCulloch (vo) is so dazzling that his surroundings become hazy. On the other hand, there is also a pattern of “Actually, there is a beautiful ‘nobleman’ in the rhythm section……” In a sense, Muse also fits into that…!? One of the most prominent figures in the New Wave scene was Matthew Ashman, the guitarist of Bow Wow Wow, whom John Frusciante, formerly of Red Hot Chili Peppers, admired. Although his haircut is often misleading, he was the most handsome prince with a Mohawk at the time.

Roddy Frame of Aztec Camera, with his long eyelashes and ribbon tie, was the Prince of Neo-acoustic Music. Johnny Marr of The Smiths, who reigned over the UK indie scene in the 1980s, had a strong image of being a delicate prince because of his musicality and sweet appearance, but later turned out to be a surprisingly wild man. In Matthew's case, his outdoor-oriented personality may attract some people.

The prince of 90's shoegaze is Mark Gardener & Andy Bell, the baby-faced, baby-boy duo who played the top two spots in Ride. In the case of Manic Street Preachers, the glamour of their two best friends, Richey Edwards (rhythm g) and Nicky Wire (tall b), complemented the hard-edged masculinity of James Dean Bradfield (vo,g), who was the musical core of the band and the duo added to the band's appeal. Matthew is the lone man at the top of the triangle, and his best friends and knights Dom and Chris certainly add to the “legend of the prince.”

The guitar prince of the early 90's has to be Bernard Butler of Suede. Although he was a full-time guitarist, he is in the same family as Matthew in terms of his intensely emotional and brilliant musical expression. In the Britpop period, the kingdom of Blur, with its king of beauty, Damon Albarn, in the centre, also had Graham Coxon (the shy prince with glasses, g) and Alex James (the intelligent prince of art, b), which made it a very rich and full kingdom. Crispian Mills (Kula Shaker), from the British upper class and famous for his eccentricities and tastes, is the psychedelic guitar prince of the late 1990s. Mansun's Paul Draper (vo,g), known as a maniac who defies the currents of the times, is also a Prince of Independent Pride. Mansun's second album, SIX, has much in common with Muse's Origin of Symmetry in terms of sound and attitude.

The Libertines' Carl Barât and Pete Doherty, whose anecdotes are stranger than fiction, are a pair of bard-prince sets. Kasabian's Sergio Pizzorno, a bearded prince of Italian heritage, is a dandy who looks great in hats and fur.

This overview of the lineage shows once again that Prince Matthew's charm lies in the coexistence of various elements, such as the darkness and the Latin, the literary and the military, the lone hero and his partner, and the slightly out of character, which makes us want to tinker with him.

Or…” he paused, allowing his handsome face to take on a salacious smirk. “You could also prolong the process. I leave it up to you.” With that, he turned to grab a faded Black Sabbath t shirt out of his half packed suitcase and took his sweet time putting it on. He wanted to make a show of it.

This is a fan-Album based on the Podcast The Adventure Zone Balance. Everyone should listen to Balance. It's a funny DND podcast. It is earnest, and stupid and funny and it has made me cry and if you don't have 69 hours to throw to this podcast (with the first 6 episodes being a bit rough as it's their first time playing) I HIGHLY recommend listening to their Current Arc: Vs Dracula. They all know what they're doing and they're doing it hilariously

Trying to organize my ask notebook better since I've run out of space under general fandom asks and I would like to know what fandoms you are in so I can ask the correct people about the correct fandoms.

I think my main ones are Bagginshield/The Hobbit, Sherlock/Johnlock, Dragon Age Inquisition, {Pippin/Faramir Merry/Eowyn}/The Lord of the Rings and I dip my toes in a few that I currently can't remember but ones I don't engage in canon at all are Good Omens but only for Crowley/Azirapheal ship, Stranger Things but only for Steve/Eddie ship, The Witcher but only for Geralt/Jaskier things and Ladybug and Cat Noir but only for Adrinette .

Also do you like getting asks that are or include story ideas or snippets?

One of the big fandoms for me is the Batfamily, but I also really love the Flash and DC in general. Marvel as well though I tend to prefer DC nowadays. I enjoy the Hobbit and Lotr, but also The old guard, the Witcher (though I have yet to read the books and have only recently started playing the game, I stopped watching the show after 3 episodes, but I know what's going on). I love BBC's Merlin, StarTrek, Hannibal,...

I'm also really into animated shows and movies, my favorite anime is probably Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, but I also watched Inuyasha, Ouran High School Host Club and Fairytail when I was younger (believe me there is a looooot more, but this post is already so long). Ghibli Movies are pure comfort.

Bookwise I've been in love with Lockwood & Co since it came out and it's one of those stories I just love to reread. Rick Riordans books practical raised me. I love classics like Pride and Prejudice or Treasure Island (Disneys Treasure Planet is so good), and I am not normal about Bram Stokers Dracula. SciFi is also good, my favorite is The Illuminae Files (great book, great presentation, absolute pleasure to read).

And well since I am studying ancient history, can't leave it out: Mythology. Especially Greek and Egyptian mythology but I love myths in general. Or ancient texts.

My favorite manga is actually a history manga with time travel and romance thrown in. Red River by Chie Shinohara has been my obsession since I've been twelve. To this day I am not over my favourite characters death. But it is historically accurate so I guess that's that.

Videogame wise I really enjoy stuff like Assassins Creed, Hades from Supergiant, Devil may Cry V, Phoenix rising, Zelda Breath of the Wild. Detroit Become Human is my favourite to this day.

Netflix’s Scrooge: A Christmas Carol

I just got done watching Scrooge: A Christmas Carol, the new animated movie with Luke Evans as Scrooge.

Luke Evans has a fantastic voice but I feel he was woefully underused here.  The commercials didn’t quite reveal it so I didn’t realize this was an animated remake of the Albert Finney Scrooge from 1970 until pretty far into it.  There is a clip of “I like Life” in the trailer but I had forgotten about that song in the 1970 Scrooge musical.  

The main songs it took from the 1970s version was Happiness, I like Life, Thank you Very much, and I’ll begin again. Thank you very much is the song that stuck with me when I watched Scrooge with Albert Finney years ago. 

Leslie Bricusse composed the original Scrooge musical and this animated version had a dedication to him at the end. He passed away last October.    

Much like how when Albert Finney played scrooge at age thirty-four, Luke Evans is only forty-three and still considerably young to be playing the elderly Scrooge.  And when he starts belting out the songs his youth really shines through and doesn’t quite fit the old man who is supposed to be singing.

The CG animation is cute but simple.  There are a few anachronisms and Americanisms that are a bit jarring for any version of a Christmas Carol but I guess they wanted to keep it simple for child viewers.  

There’s a scene toward the beginning when Scrooge says “Merry Christmas” to taunt a toy shoppe owner who is in debt as he tells him the interest he’ll have to pay for delaying his debt to after the holiday.  And that bothered me slightly and it was simply because I can’t imagine the pre-redemption Scrooge saying “Merry Christmas” even when being snarky.

In general it’s sweet.  Not terrible but not the best version of a Christmas Carol. It’s certainly better than that cruel, cynical, awful, 2019 Christmas Carol from the BBC (That was the worst non-musical version of A Christmas Carol I had ever seen).  You can tell this remake of the Scrooge musical was made with children in mind as it gave The Ghost of Christmas Present little pixie-imp henchmen that turn into tiny demon-imps when The Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come arrives. 

I was a little surprised when I realized it was a remake of the Albert Finney musical but done to animation. Somehow I didn’t recognize the “I like life” number in the trailer for the movie.

I think the best thing about this was Luke Evans.  He has a fantastic voice and certainly should be in more musicals. He was underused here and he was the only saving grace to the live action Disney’s Beauty and the Beast live action remake as Gaston.

I think Luke Evans needs to be in more musicals. Hell, I want to see him as Dracula in Frank Wildhorn’s Dracula: The Musical.    

I think I give this version a seventy-five or an eighty.  It might be better than that but I think I’m a little burnt out on Christmas Carol adaptations.  I think Christmas needs a new wholesome ghost story.  A lot of people don’t realize it but Charles Dickens actually wrote a few of them, not just a Christmas Carol. I’d say they should adapt The Goblins who stole a Sexton but that was pretty much just “Prototype Christmas Carol.”   I’d like to see a fresh, new Christmas ghost story.

"racist show" ??? find me a less racist show right now. I can't even think of a tv show that isn't unintentionally racist in some way. new iwtv? no, it's good but it's definitely got some unfortunate bits. reservation dogs? nope there's a video on youtube calling it anti-black. black sails? doctor who? noughts and crosses?

what is this even about? Ed being "too violent" ? there is no way to avoid every possible racist interpretation someone might have.

Oh it's because the historical guy they stole the name and not much else from to give to OFMD's main character owned slaves irl. which I consider to be a valid argument when its brought up in discussion of the show by people who actually want to discuss the finer points of historical fiction and what goes and what doesn't and completely disingenuous when it comes from tumblr anons and in blorbo brackets and the like. Every single piece of historical fiction from that general time period is haunted by the specter of slavery. Ofmd is no exception, I feel like they handled it well and they handled it well specifically because they made sure to have the perspectives of the descendants of enslaved peoples in the writers room, which many many many pieces of historical fiction like Black Sails and doctor who have not done. I think it's very important to have characters like Oluwande and Frenchie and I think that while I sorta wish they'd changed the name they altered the story so much from reality that that's just a fucking original character with a name ripped from a historical guy.

Edit: the reason I consider it to be pretty disingenuous is because I don't like it when fucking genocide and racial trauma is used cynically to dunk on people you find annoying and no one is ever consistent about it. Like Black Sails is way worse at handling the Slavery thing and yet Stede was the one who had to beat the allegations in that Flint V Stede poll that broke containment for example, People will compair it to Hamilton despite the fact that they're only really comperable in the fact that they're both historical fiction (OFMD is about people you've never heard of, Hamilton is about fuckers who still effect legislation to this day. Hamilton sticks to history pretty closely OFMD says fuck history the pirates are kissing. Hamilton is a biographical broadway show and OFMD is a Television Romantic Comedy. It even takes place on opposite ends of the 1700s. there's no comparison unless you want to lump Bridgerton and Black Sails and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Six (the musical) and Dracula Untold and so on and so forth). Basically there's a ton of historical fiction for which the problems OFMD has are also criticisms that could be applied there and I tend to notice which ones people apply them to. Usually if there's a prominent person of color who's kind of a nerd attached to it, it draw tumblr's ire and if there isn't they get to skate by and Tumblr doesn't even notice it's existance. I don't know if that's because we're all self hating nerds and we hate to see another nerd winning because it invokes the self cringe or because of racism (tis definitely the racism) but it's true.

alright, I’m cobbling together few different adaptations/timelines of dracula here so bear with me

obviously we’re not doing this movie strictly by the book (pun v much intended). we’re taking the log entries from the novel and running with it (which is. just how Adaptation Theory works, I know. but hang on.)

the introduction of new characters/fleshing out of people who were just barely named in the novel got me thinking about how in the lugosi/villarías simultaneous films in 1931, which were in turn based off the 1924 hamilton deane stage play (revised by balderson in ‘27 but w/e), renfield is present on the demeter. he is part of the journey as drac is picking off the crew one by one, instead of just waiting and growing more agitated at whitby, and it’s highly implied in the 30s films that it’s this trip that sent him fully over the edge into the manic state we see him in for the rest of the film.

this big reveal at the end of the journey, his discovery as the lone survivor of the ship by a horrified crowd, is a moment that was heavily referenced (beautifully, I would argue) in the recent nicholas hoult film, in which I think he knocked his dwight frye impression out of the fucking park.

(not pictured: pablo álvarez rubio, who played renfield in the spanish language drácula filmed on the same sets during the same period but only at night IIRC bc Studio Racism to put it v bluntly, and who I honestly think was almost more horrifying in his manic laugh moment than frye.)

but so the thing I’m getting at, here, is there is room for a little… creative wiggle room, in just who turns out to be onboard this boat in this upcoming movie.

so I watched the trailer today while I was sitting around waiting for the new insidious (which imho was good if you like the franchise but that’s another post), and as someone who was already stoked for this movie and then got More Stoked when dast was cast, I found something kind of… interesting.

he’s really not featured in it a lot.

I mean I didn’t have a stopwatch out or anything, but in the most recent trailer, we maybe get a couple quick closeups of his face looking Alarmed/Concerned. but comparatively, we do get more footage of other crew members getting menaced/hunted/stalked/mauled.

so I was like “okay, maybe this is like the boogeyman, where he did a lot of press for it and then [spoiler].” so I went and checked imdb just to see what was up:

…he’s fourth billed.

so clemens is obvi the protagonist, anna seems to have a lot of lore to talk about in the trailer so she might be around as a key member, and then obviously the captain bc he’s our main point of view in the novel through his logs, IIRC. and there isn’t anyone else in the cast blatantly named “renfield.”

this does raise the question of “why is renfield using an alias and disguising himself as a deckhand to travel with drac” but then again, if I came onboard a ship and was openly associated with mysterious giant boxes of earth as cargo, and then something began fucking picking people off one by one when it got peckish, people would probably figure out there’s something fairly fishy about me and my giant fucking Dirty Boxes p quick. and in the ‘30s versions, the chapter was really presented as more a montage with some voiceover IIRC, only revealing renfield in the hold at the very end.

so what is dast doing in that particular spot if he’s just playing Some Guy? and why is he billed higher than dracula himself, javier botet? (whom I must add I adore from many things, and is one of my favorite Creature Guys next to the man himself, doug!)

(he’s like - eighth or ninth I think? and I get that he’s not billed v high bc we want to keep his onscreen presence fairly minimal to be properly scary, but in a film that’s ostensibly about dracula, it does make me wonder about the significance of the other characters listed before him.)

now look, I could be totally wrong on this - dast is also fourth billed in the boogeyman on imdb, and if you’ve seen it - well, You Know. but still! I don’t think this is totally impossible here!

so like! Idk! I could just really really want this to be the case, and the movie marketing team knows dast has a reasonably sized fanbase they can use to plug the movie to (me being a perfect case in point).

but I’m just saying… it’s not impossible we might get a second or third act plot twist that ends with dast having his own hysterical laughter closeup at the bottom of the deck stairs, yknow??

(god, that would be so rad. as a fellow horror nerd I would legit be so excited for him to get to have his own version of one of Thee Big Moments in film history.)

anyway, if anyone’s read anything somewhere that shoots this down, please feel free to lmk so I can adjust my expectations accordingly. I think I’m going to go back through the original chapter and see if there’s a Wojchek I happened to totally forgor (and not the historic bear I already associate with the name).

do with this what you will, maybe I’m totally delulu but I did at least want to bring up the possibility bc if I’m right that would just be the coolest shit in the world, imho.

also watch the old 30s movies if you can find them — they usually have cheap dvds of them at walmart during spooky season, in my experience, or try your local library. the lugosi version is iconic, but the villarías never got the recognition it deserved imho.
