This mural was designed by Barbara Jo Revelle, the former director of the School of Art and Art History at the University of Florida in Gainesville, who won a $100,000 commission in 1999 to create a piece of public art based on the history of our city. Revelle created the 100-foot-long mural of 1-inch square photographic mosaic tiles depicting Florida's Seminoles, African-American union soldiers, and cattlemen. In an unpublished dedication to the piece, Revelle wrote: "I dedicate 'An Alternative History of Fort Myers' ... to those Native Americans who died in the First, Second and Third Seminole Wars, and to their survivors, the present-day Seminoles in Florida.

"The United States Government spent much of the first half of the 19th century trying unsuccessfully to dislodge about 5,000 Seminoles from Florida. ... The Seminole people — including elders, women, and children — were hunted with bloodhounds, rounded up like cattle and forced onto ships that carried them to New Orleans and up the Mississippi. ...

"The toll in human suffering was profound and the stain on the honor of a great nation, the United States, can never be erased.”

The idea of having a picnic beneath the mural was a reference to the disconcerting tradition of people bringing picnics to watch lynchings or battles during the Civil War. The all-white clothing and all-white food they ate was a reference to the history of white supremacy that continues to haunt our nation. The Jenny Holzer quote painted on the inside of the panels reads, “Some days you wake up and immediately start to worry. Nothing, in particular, is wrong, it’s just the suspicion that forces are aligning quietly and there will be trouble.” Viewers who hoped to understand the piece could not remain passive and inert. They had to walk around it in order to piece together the text; their view of the students on the inside interrupted by panels which reflected a distorted image of themselves and the surrounding space. To complete the multi-sensory experience, the students recorded a sound piece, layering Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (which he wrote while under the spell of the French Revolution and which is often described as “fate knocking at the door”) underneath recordings of various news stories related to climate change, financial and political corruption, and racial violence.

The Collaboratory and Downtown Fort Myers

As our group went to venture Downtown Fort Myers, we got to learn a lot more about the area than we initially expected. This was an exceptional journey for us.

 The Collaboratory was our first stop. The was space designed for collaboration and community growth. It utilized principles of sustainability by having solar-powered poles and fake grass as well as brickwork that allows for the flow of rainwater to run off away from the building. The collaborators were a great space but there were many things lacking. The space was bland and didn't look like it was made for the community it was built in specifically I saw this as a continuation of gentrification and marginalization that takes space from marginalized communities but doesn't serve or collaborate with them. These communities have so much wealth to share with that space and deserve ownership in a space that is their own. The reason I bring this up in terms of sustainability is that just as the brickwork and pavement displaces and disconnects plantlife and animals further harming eco-systems gentrifying areas with buildings that design for collaboration but for specific collaborators also displaces and disconnects a community of human beings that have much to offer to the greater community.

We had a great time downtown. An assortment of interesting things was brought to mind. We had no idea how much City planning had to do with sustainability. And how although in need of improvements; design of Downtown fort Myers had some intentional and thoughtful planning. Having palm pedestrians from getting hit by cars. The roads are narrow so people drive slow but also this design was not just for sustainability but aimed at profit and economy as well. Design streets an area in such a way where people drive slow so they take in their surroundings; the local businesses.  

Speaking of roads, one of the fun facts that few people know about is that Fort Myers has some of the highest rates of death by car collisions in the country. This is due to our small roads that don't give enough room for bike lanes and pedestrians this is also due to the original structure and foundations of our communities in terms of design the design poorly prepared for the future.

We noticed many things I could be improved upon, from urban sprawl to tourism and the double-edged sword its role plays in our community. For example, the snowbirds that come down have maybe too much say and not enough connection with the community. They have pull on how the community design and policies but aren't fully in the space. This creating an inequitable dynamic for the locals. One of our group members, Made suggestions on how the trash and recycling receptacles could have an app that pedestrians and locals could use to use a recycling bin this will prevent people from placing the wrong plastic in bins as well an opportunity for learning.

In summation, The field trip was very insightful and showed our group how so many intricate pieces go into cultivating community and designing spaces that are sustainable and equitable for the greater community.
