The Florida Panther
"The Florida Panther" is a sculpture created by D.J. Wilkins, located in Downtown Fort Myers. The statue, created in 1988, has a subject of the state animal in Florida- the panther. The size of this sculpture is realistic, being nearly the same size as the average panther.
In this sculpture, you can see one panther with a cub, along with a frog in the corner. Having only two panthers in this wide square area draws attention to how panthers are an incredibly endangered species. Additionally, this sculpture shows the hidden aspect of nature in our communities. Even though the cities nearby are full of buildings and factories, nature still shines through.
This sculpture is also completely in the round, with different parts of the sculpture being visible from every angle. Though the sculpture was created out of bronze, the sculptor disregarded any limits that material may have. The panther is smooth all throughout, ignoring the stiff aspect of the bronze material. Every detail is made accurate to the actual species, from its long tail to its protruding face.
Overall, the sculpture is in the round with no relief as there is no background on which the statue is made. The art shows the aspect of nature in our communities, while also highlighting the fact that Florida panthers are an endangered species. I believe that this sculpture is a wonderful part of Downtown Fort Myers, bringing light to the world around us as we acknowledge our state animal and the danger it is in.

My military mind manifesto:
I believe after revising and comparing all my posted blogs that have been completed during this course that there are many unique similarities throughout most of the blogs. Many of my assignments posted to my Tumblr were similar in a few different ways, but one of these similarities includes my point of view or my perspective on each topic. I was able to complete my blogs from my point of view and how I received each assignment with my own personal twist. Each blog or assignment I was allowed to pick the poem, theme of photos, or painting, whichever the assignment was about. Most of my blogs that are posted by me are unique and have an insight of me as an individual. I realized I do mention my military boyfriend a few times, such as in the blog about the situations, the sunset photo collection, and my blog named "Military Mind." The military is stressful for us and is clearly frequently on my mind, which is much more noticeable once looking back at all my blogs posted this semester. But being able to discuss the reality of being in a long-distance military relationship or even having someone in the family who is stationed away, serving our country, is difficult and not talked about enough. There are many ups and downs through the several years they serve. I have been able to reflect multiple assignments to something that is very personal to me. My blogs are all unique from anyone else completing the same assignment, which is quite impressive, as everyone has the same assignment, yet we all have our own story to tell or our own version to blog about. My blogs represent me quite well, as they are very colorful but also calm, in my opinion. Scrolling through the blogs from my post, sitting with my dog Sansa at the beach, relaxing in the shade, my abstract painting of the unique art, public sculptures located in downtown Fort Myers, and the several sunset pictures taken around Florida by me that were included in my assignment of my photo collection. I will mention that my overall theme throughout a few of my blogs during this course may include a calm representation, personal details, and colorful. If someone were to go onto my Tumblr profile and read all my blogs and pay close attention to the images included as well, I do believe someone could really get to know me quickly and be able to paint their own picture of what kind of person I am. Someone who may have looked at my Tumblr account and read through my assignments posted throughout the past few months may have been able to distinguish that I am young, in school, and I enjoy traveling. After reading the previous blogs posted by me, they would realize I enjoy traveling, as the sunset pictures were taken over different places in Florida. I discuss traveling to Clarksville and Nashville.

Schools in Naples, FL
Naples, FL, is a top choice for families who are looking for a good school district. It's amazing to know that Collier County's public school district has an A grade on Niche and a No. 5 spot on Niche's list of "Best School Districts in Florida." With these features, you can find Naples to be the perfect location to raise your children. Naples also offers three colleges/universities: Florida Gulf Coast University, Edison State Community College, and Hodges University, making it an excellent choice for children's education. Besides, when it comes to location, Naples is indeed conveniently located near larger cities like Cape Coral and Fort Myers, and its growing economy offers exciting work opportunities. Not bad, Naples is a popular relocation spot with a rich cultural and economic landscape.
Naples Botanical Garden
The Naples Botanical Garden is a well-known botanical garden located in Naples, Florida. It's known for hosting various events like the Veterans Day Appreciation Weekend and school visits. The garden is also open daily from 9am to 5pm. I like this garden because it offers guided tours, daily tours, and cart tours for members. The Evenstad Horticulture Campus, a tropical growing operation, enhances the garden's 170 acres, develops nature-based solutions to environmental challenges, and conserves tropical and subtropical plants. The garden also hosts events like Blazes Spark New Life in Preserve, Celebrating Life and Memory: The Spirit of Día de los Muertos, and Leave Your Leaf Litter.
Naples Players Christmas Story
The Naples Players (TNP) will present A Christmas Story: The Musical for the 2024 holiday season, running from November 20 to December 22, 2024, at the newly renovated Kizzie Theater. The musical follows young Ralphie Parker's quest to get the ultimate Christmas present, featuring energetic dance numbers and unforgettable songs like "Red Ryder Carbine Action BB Gun" and "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out." The production is directed by Dawn Lebrecht Fornara and musically directed by Charles Fornara, featuring an exciting blend of local adult and youth talent, including eleven-year-old Matias Piscoya as Ralphie. The level of local talent involved in this production is truly remarkable, and the show connects the community. It's nice to attend and have fun.

Downtown Fort Myers
The history of Downtown Fort Myers is that people have lived there for at least 14,000 years, dating back to the end of the last great ice age. Back then, the water was held in glaciers, the sea levels were lower than they are today and peninsular Florida was twice as wide as it is today, extending into what is now the Gulf of Mexico.
In the early 16th century, Spanish explorers encountered the Calusa, a powerful Native American group in Southwest Florida. The Calusa controlled much of the region, including the Miami area, and thrived on fishing, shellfishing, and hunting. They resisted Spanish efforts to settle, with the first attempts resulting in hostility and deaths, including that of Ponce de Leon. Spanish Jesuit missions were established but failed due to the Calusa's resistance.
By 1763, following European diseases, the Calusa population had dwindled significantly, with many fleeing to Cuba. The Caloosahatchee River, named by the Seminoles, means "River of the Calusa."
Fort Myers, originally established in 1841 during the Second Seminole War as Fort Harvie, was reoccupied and renamed during the Third Seminole War. It later played a role during the Civil War, being occupied by Black Federal troops. Monuments around the town commemorate the area's military history.
Cattle ranching in Florida began with early Spanish settlers who brought cattle to the New World. These cattle, known as "scrub" cattle, survived Florida's harsh climate and were later herded by pioneers to Jacob Summerlin's ranch near Punta Rassa. From there, cattle were shipped to Cuba for better prices. It wasn't until 1908 that Fort Myers passed an ordinance requiring cattle to be kept outside city limits, as they had previously roamed the streets. Today, cattle ranching remains an important part of Florida's economy.
Fort Myers was a busy working waterfront from the late 1800s to the 1920s, with citrus, vegetables, and fish shipped from river wharves. River transportation was key before the railroad reached the city in 1904. The Caloosahatchee Canal, completed in the 1890s, connected the river to Lake Okeechobee. Today, the city's waterfront focuses on parks and recreational areas like Centennial Park and the Yacht Basin.
The "Fathers of Industry" in Fort Myers, including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, and George Sanders, played key roles in the area's development. Edison sought ways to produce rubber locally for Firestone tires, which would then be used on Ford cars. George Sanders designed the Edison Mall, which opened in 1964 and shifted shopping from downtown.
The Old County Courthouse, built in 1915 in Classical Revival style, now houses the county commissioners' offices. In contrast, the modern courthouse/justice building has a more contemporary design reflecting the evolving needs of the community.
During the Great Depression, WPA projects like Centennial Park, the Yacht Basin, and the Old Post Office (now the Sydney and Berne Davis Art Center) helped provide jobs and boost the local economy.
The "City of Palms" features two Palm Parks showcasing palms from around the world, and public art is integrated into various downtown buildings, such as the Caloosahatchee Manuscripts and a mosaic on the new Federal Building.
Downtown Fort Myers, once a hub for shopping and socializing, has evolved with the rise of shopping malls, leading to a shift in retail activity. The city now promotes "Smart Growth" to encourage sustainable, mixed-use development with diverse housing, cultural venues, and walkable spaces.
Fort Myers' history also includes the painful legacy of segregation, highlighting the city's complex and often less visible past. The importance of voting and understanding local politics is emphasized for active community participation.
Learning about the city relates to the readings and course objectives because the history of Downtown Fort Myers provides us details on the ups and downs the State and City went through. With our course, we learn the history of Sustainability and how it was sustainable then and now. The importance of this information helps us understand that life is about overcoming obstacles to better the future of the world for future generations and having a long-lasting world with having knowledge of sustainability.

West-central Florida faces its most significant hurricane threat in over a century.
The FOX Forecast Center warns that communities in the Tampa metro area, which have only experienced glancing blows from hurricanes in recent decades, now face the risk of a direct hit. This could lead to a significant storm surge along the vulnerable coastline.
Less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene hit Florida’s Big Bend, Milton is now threatening to follow a similar path. However, due to the state's unique coastline, the angle of landfall could make this storm the worst in over a century for parts of west-central Florida.
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in 34210 - Bradenton FL:
The region is already weary from recent storms, including Helene, Debby, Ian, and Idalia. But the FOX Forecast Center warns that the storm’s unusual approach resembles the scenario emergency managers have long feared and prepared for.
During Helene, areas south of Florida's Big Bend saw storm surges averaging 5 to 8 feet, which were relatively modest due to the wind direction and distance from the core of the Category 4 hurricane. A storm track that moves directly over or just north of the Tampa-Sarasota metro would result in a much greater storm surge than previous hurricanes.
"The West Coast of Florida is extremely vulnerable to storm surge, as we've seen in the past. Even a tropical storm can push Gulf waters to dangerous levels, and a strong hurricane poses an even greater threat. It’s vital for everyone in Central and South Florida to stay informed, as conditions are changing rapidly," said FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross.
A storm surge model known as SLOSH predicts that during a Category 3 hurricane, large portions of Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties could be submerged under several feet of water. The area's shoreline topography means water levels could rise by more than 9 feet if a major hurricane follows the worst-case scenario for the metro region.
Storm trajectories significantly north or south of the Tampa metro result in drastically different outcomes, as many Floridians have experienced in recent years. Weather Forecast For 80908 Colorado Springs CO:
https://www.behance.net/gallery/202610237/Weather-Forecast-For-80908-Colorado-Springs-CO
For instance, Hurricanes Idalia and Helene made landfall about 130 miles north of Tampa, generating storm surges of 3 to 8 feet around the metro, partly due to the southerly winds.
Conversely, Hurricane Ian in 2022 caused a northeast wind flow when it made landfall near Fort Myers. This resulted in a negative storm surge in Tampa Bay, with water levels dropping by 5 to 8 feet.
Some residents were even seen walking along the exposed lakebed, though it was a risky and ill-advised decision.
Emergency managers have long planned for a worst-case scenario in the Tampa metro area. While the exact impacts of Hurricane Milton won’t be known until it passes through Florida, preparations for a direct strike have been in place for years.
In 2009, the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council created "Project Phoenix," a simulation that modeled the effects of a Category 5 hurricane hitting the region. The hypothetical storm generated a storm surge of up to 40 feet along the coast, with downtown Tampa experiencing water levels rising 10 to 15 feet.
The projected damage was estimated in the hundreds of billions of dollars, potentially making it the most expensive disaster in U.S. history if such a storm were to occur.
youtube
While no one, including the National Hurricane Center or various computer models, is predicting Milton will reach Category 5 strength, there is historical precedent for a Category 3 storm impacting the region.
In 1921, the Tampa Bay hurricane formed in the Caribbean and made landfall near Tarpon Springs as a Category 3 storm with winds around 120 mph. According to the National Weather Service, the storm generated a surge of about 11 feet, and records show that only eight lives were lost.
At that time, the Tampa Bay metro area had a population just over 100,000. Today, census estimates place the population at more than 3 million, drastically increasing the potential impact of a similar storm.
In more than 180 years of record-keeping, Tampa has only been directly hit by two major hurricanes: the Category 3 storm in 1921 and a Category 4 in 1848.

The title of the public sculpture that is located near me, which I find truly fascinating, is called Caloosahatchee Manuscripts. It is located at the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center. This public sculpture really speaks to me because it consists of two tall bronze cylinders, each about 10 feet high, with a bright light shining in the middle between them. In the evening, when the sun goes down, these lights make thousands of letters glow beautifully across the building and the ground. Surrounding the sculpture are tall palm trees and parked cars that add to the lively atmosphere of downtown Fort Myers, FL. The Caloosahatchee Manuscripts were created in 2001 by a talented artist named Jim Sanborn. On the western cylinder, it displays the Latin names of 500 different plants that the famous inventor Thomas Edison tested in his efforts to find a local source of latex to create rubber. Meanwhile, the eastern cylinder tells the important story of how Native Americans migrated into the lower southeastern part of the United States. This sculpture not only captures the eye but also connects us to the rich history of the area, showing us the relationship between nature and the people who have lived here. It makes me think about how art can tell stories and help us remember the past. Even though downtown is not very beautiful at times, this public sculpture brings some light to the area. Many individuals take prom and homecoming pictures on the stairs in front of these beautiful manuscripts.
*These beautiful pictures are from google.*
