Nexus Tools 5.0 is now available!

Nexus Tools is a simple installer for the Android SDK Platform Tools package, which includes ADB, Fastboot, Systrace, and other applications. It's one of my longest-running software projects, since I published the first version in December 2013, and it remains one of the most popular ways to get started with Android development and debugging (especially on Mac). Now I've finished the biggest update yet.

Until now, Nexus Tools was written as a bash script, meaning it's a series of commands that runs on the computer's Bash Shell. This has a few advantages — I don't have to compile anything, it works on all Unix-like computers (Linux, macOS, etc.), and so on. However, it has been extremely difficult for me to maintain a bash script that works across multiple versions of Bash across several different operating systems. Every time I changed something, something else almost always broke.

Nexus Tools 5.0 is completely rewritten in the Dart language, which means I can implement new features and cut back on potential bugs. The bash script now downloads and runs a Dart executable, which in turn does the actual installation process. The best part is that on the surface, it looks and works just like the old Nexus Tools — everything is still done within a few seconds.

The main functional change for all platforms is that Nexus Tools now installs itself to the same folder where all the SDK Tools are found. This means you can update the SDK Tools or delete them without going back to the GitHub page, by simply running "nexustools -i" or "nexustools -r" from the Terminal.

The Dart rewrite also gave me the opportunity to add support for Windows. Nexus Tools on Windows works exactly like the macOS and Linux versions — you paste a command into PowerShell, and Nexus Tools installs the SDK Tools (and itself) to a "NexusTools" folder in your user folder. Since Windows requires additional drivers for detecting ADB/Fastboot devices, Nexus Tools gives you the option of installing the Universal ADB Drivers package by developer Koushik Dutta.

Adding and modifying files in this directory is an advanced topic for those who really want to get down and dirty with XBMC modifications. The “keymaps” button allows you to upload a file to the /sdcard/android/data/org.xbmc.xbmc/files/.xbmc/userdata/keymaps directory. This directory allows you to upload a customized keyboard.xml file which is often necessary to get XBMC to play nice with third-party remotes; a topic we plan to cover in the near future. Lastly we have the “media” button which allows you to upload files to the /sdcard/android/data/org.xbmc.xbmc/files/.xbmc/userdata/media directory. Here you can upload your own custom “splash.png” file to replace the default loading screen you see while XBMC is loading.

I have not been able to get adbFire to connect. I have an ASUS RT-N56U router with standard firmware. I think there is a setting blocking my ability to connect. Are you aware of any settings that prevent access from a PC or MAC machine. I tried both, a PC and MAC, multiple times.

Same as previous comment, it’s not working. I was just trying to setup Fire TV and adbfire won’t connect. Connected wireless via Belkin N600 HD router loaded with Tomato fw. No problems finding the IP and running adbfire, but click on connect once and there’s just no response. Click a second time (or third, forth, etc.) and get the response ‘device not connected’.

How to install ADB Driver on your Linux

1. Download the ADB driver zip file on your device 2. Extract the zip file to an easy location  3. Open the application  4. Enter the following command: cd /path/to/extracted/folder/  5. This will modify the directory from where the ADB file were extracted  6. For an example: cd /Users/Doug/Desktop/platform-tools/  7. With an USB cable, connect your device to the Linux machine. Change the         USB mode to “file transfer mode (MTP)”.  8. You can execute the following commands to start the ADB Driver daemon            once the terminal is in the same folder that your ADB Driver tool is in: ADB            devices  9. You can see a prompt asking you to allow USB debugging on your tablet or         smartphone. Grant it. 

10.  At last re-enter the command step #8. At last you can run any ADB                       command on your device.

It can be an easier way to install ADB on your computer, some Linux users should know that. The above guide would probably work for you, but those who own a Linux distribution based on Debian or Fedora/SUSE can skip step 1 and step 2 of the above guide and use one of the commands below.

Debian-based Linux users can type the following command to ADB: sudo apt-get install ADB

Fedora/SUSE-based Linux users can type the following commands to install: sudo yum install android-tools .
