TV on TV!
Part 1 ~ The TV Shows of the Lucyverse
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d46716c4fddff5b77546b3e07c2b60ec/4831198d0729635f-fb/s540x810/04a1f0ddf4a40ed196290a1fa6ab77490cd3c5d8.jpg)
Although it may seem redundant, the worlds created by Lucille Ball on radio and television frequently created and mentioned other TV shows! Here are a few.Â
âTelevisionâ (1949)
Liz and Georgeâs visit to their next-door neighbors, the Stones, turns into a disaster when George tries to repair the Stonesâ new television set by himself.
âTelevision throws âMy Favorite Husbandâ for a loss, and the whole neighborhood into night courts.â ~ Â Mason City Globe-Gazette radio listing
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a2103dfa289844d4901e6f98134b219c/4831198d0729635f-9b/s540x810/8cb345a3fe8a566e82cf8c6252d51612a17cb741.jpg)
âToo Many Television Setsâ (1949)Â
Liz (Lucilll Ball) canât get George (Richard Denning) interested in buying a television set, until they spend an evening at the Atterburys, who have one. With his interest piqued, George arranges one be sent over on trial. Little does he know Liz has done the same thing - as have the Atterburyâs! Â
LIZ: âI never know who won the fights or what Kukla and Fran are doing to Ollie.â
âKukla, Fran, and Ollieâ was a childrenâs television show created by Burr Tillstrom that aired from 1947 to 1957. Kukla and Ollie were puppets and actress Fran Allison interacted with them. The show won a 1949 Peabody Award and went on to win two Emmys.
IRIS: âI did my knitting last night with Ed Wynn; I had breakfast with Tex and Jinx; and this afternoon I took a bath with Hopalong Cassidy!â
âThe Ed Wynn Showâ was a variety show broadcast from September 22,1949 to July 4, 1950 on the CBS Television Network. Comedian and former vaudevillian Ed Wynn was the star of the program. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz made their television debut as a couple on the show on Christmas Eve 1949, just a few weeks after this episode of âMy Favorite Husbandâ.
âTex and Jinxâ were Eugenia âJinxâ Falkenberg and her husband John âTexâ McCary. The couple were popular radio hosts who began on television in January 1947.
âHopalong Cassidyâ made the leap from books and movies to the small screen on June 24, 1949, kicking off the legacy of the Western on television. These were not new, but simply cut-down versions of the feature films that were in cinemas from 1935 to 1948.Â
Joe warns the Coopers not to sit behind Iris because they only have a ten inch screen. (Liz adds that Iris has a 16âł neck.) He advises that they visit the Schraders who watch âPantomime Quizâ and serve sandwiches. âPantomime Quizâ (later titled âStump the Starsâ), was a television game show hosted by Mike Stokey. Running from 1947 to 1959, it has the distinction of being one of the few television series to air on all four TV networks during the Golden Age of Television. Lucille Ball is reported to have been on the series in December 1947, which would make it her television debut.
âLiz Appears on Televisionâ (1950)
Liz and Iris (Bea Benadaret) make an appearance on a television show celebrating Friendship Week. Their friendship is tested, though, when they discover they've bought the same dress for the occasion. The name of the show is âLove Your Neighborâ the host of which is played by Frank Nelson. The episode mentions two of the same television programs as âToo Many Television Setsâ a year earlier.Â
GEORGE: âI can see it now: âKukla, Fran and Lizzie!â
LIZ: âTry Hopalong Cassidy. He looks good next to a horse!â
âLucy Does a TV Commercialâ (1952)
RICKY: âYouâve never even been on a television show!â LUCY: âMaybe not, but Iâve watched them a lot.â Â
Lucy gets hired to do a TV commercial on Rickyâs new show, not realizing the health tonic she has to consume is full of alcohol!
LUCY: âWhen Ricky comes home tonight youâre going to turn on that television set, and you know whoâs going to be on it?â FRED: âWell, I can only hope itâs Faye Emerson.â
Faye Emerson was a very glamorous stage and screen actress turned TV hostess who had her own variety show. She wore low-cut gowns bedecked with jewelry and had bleach blonde hair pulled back in a tight bun.
The TV show Ricky hosts is titled âYour Saturday Night Varietyâ.  You can see Lucille Ball waiting in the wings, with the living room set behind her! The TV camera has had its identifying information redacted and replaced by TVC (Television Camera)!Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/64d4603af16a61a15eae17b3999e1568/4831198d0729635f-3d/s540x810/e2ca6cbc57663b7f6c3711c19e8da2ca5d7d707e.jpg)
âLucy Gets Ricky on the Radioâ (1952)
When their TV breaks down, the gang tunes in to a radio quiz show. Surprisingly, Ricky correctly guesses the answers to all of the questions, so the next day Lucy signs them up to be on the show. Sitting the radio atop the malfunctioning TVV set, the gang stares intently at the radio, just as they would television. Before the TV breaks down, the foursome are watching a movie, despite poor reception.Â
LUCY: âThat little girl is Margaret O'Brien, isnât it?â RICKY: âLook again - itâs Shirley Temple.â FRED: âLook again - itâs Mary Pickford!â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/15942ddd69dd66cc9bf8b0c118a66fb1/4831198d0729635f-64/s540x810/903fd7a35fca769261cbd64e0e8a77f2c8711f35.jpg)
âNew Neighborsâ (1952)
âThatâs pretty corny dialogue, even for television. Well, itâs a living!â
New neighbors have just moved in to 323 East 68th Street. When Lucy gets stuck hiding in their closet, she overhears the couple practicing their lines for a TV show and jumps to conclusion that they are foreign spies! Hayden Rorke and K.T. Stevens play the acting couple.Â
âThe Handcuffsâ (1952)
To keep Ricky home, Lucy handcuffs them together - but then doesnât have the key. Ricky needs to host a TV show that evening - âYour Favorite Celebrity Guest Stars on TVâ. Lucy has no choice but to be part of the act - if only her left arm!
Ricky is interviewed and introduced by Veola Vonn, real-life wife of Frank Nelson.
âReaders keepers, losers go look at television!â ~ The Black Eye (1953)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dfe9c1d8944a8d734f09126e147d235c/4831198d0729635f-cb/s540x810/f6dbcc339a617ab2d32379c418667f5e26a3496f.jpg)
âRicky and Fred Are TV Fansâ (1953)Â
Lucy and Ethel feel the boys are ignoring them to watch the fights on television. They go to elaborate lengths to stop their obsession. The championship boxing match that Ricky and Fred are watching pits 'The Kid' against Murphy. A heavyweight boxer named Irish Bob Murphy famously fought Jake LaMotta in June 1952. Kid Gavilån was a welterweight boxer from (unsurprisingly) Cuba, who was world champion in 1952. Naturally Ricky bets on 'The Kid', while Irishman Fred is in Murphy's corner.
âLucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dressâ (1953)
âWe have a whole half hour on television!â
Lucy and Ethel are excited to appear on TV with their club, until they buy the same dress, which tests their âFriendshipâ.
Rickyâs solo on the TV show is "Vaya con Dios.â When Ricky is introducing his song, he says âItâs become quite popular in the last couple of months.â
âBaby Picturesâ (1953)Â
Trying to impress the Ricardos about his TV stationâs offering of motion pictures Charlie Appleby says:
CHARLIE: âWeâve got the newest moving pictures in town. I bought a block of films yesterday, and I want to tell you that theyâre going to make television stars out of some of the actors. Now, just remember their names: Conway Tearle and Mabel Normand.â
Both were silent film stars and died in the 1930s!Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/99f5855c0dc2fb0b8116b915e95b4236/4831198d0729635f-f3/s540x810/a859bfbe1700e494a49117c6e3e261392aabd07d.jpg)
âMillion Dollar Ideaâ (1954)Â
Lucy bottles her own salad dressing, then she and Ethel go on TV to sell it.Â
They appear on âThe Dickie Davis Show,â a four-hour daily TV program produced at the station run by Caroline Appleby's husband, Charlie. Frank Nelson plays Dickie Davis.Â
âThe Charm Schoolâ (1954)
The episode opens with a party where the men are in one room and the women in the other. At the party, the men talk about how soon color might be introduced on television.Â
BILL: âWell, there are two schools of thought on that matter. Some people think itâs just around the corner. Others think itâs gonna be a year or two.â
In reality, it was just six months away - but not on CBS and not on âI Love Lucy.â Ricky says he read an article by Harry Ackerman, a TV producer who supported the filming of âI Love Lucyâ in front of a live studio audience.
âHome Moviesâ (1954)Â
âIf I want to see old movies, Iâll watch television.â
When his feelings get hurt that no one is interested in his home movies, Ricky refuses to include Lucy, Fred and Ethel in his new TV pilot film. Lucy, however, has a plan to get into the action anyway!
âRickyâs Hawaiian Vacationâ (1954)Â
Lucy plans to win a trip to Hawaii on a television quiz show so that she can go with Ricky on a work trip.Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2f0f74697ccb61f79c3d7cc1a95120ed/4831198d0729635f-ca/s540x810/4779a1b079c51f265d3248d76e2f2555e2d2d1a5.jpg)
The TV show is called âBe A Good Neighborâ and it is hosted by Freddy Fillmore, who has finally made the leap from radio to television. In reality, many radio shows made the transition to television during the early 1950s.Â
âThe Black Wigâ (1954)Â
When Ethel tries on Lucyâs wig, Fred says it looks more like life with Luigi.Â
âLife With Luigiâ was a radio comedy that transferred to television. It premiered on CBS one season after âI Love Lucy,â but was not a success, lasting only a year before briefly returning to radio. One of the 'Italian' characters was played by Alan Reed, who later voiced Fred Flintstone. Two years earlier, both âLuigiâ and âLucyâ were part of âStars in the Eyeâ, a 1952 CBS special that celebrated the opening of Television City Studios.
âTennessee Ernie Hangs Onâ (1954)
The gang and Ernie sing on television to make money to send him home.Â
âMillikan's Chicken-Mash Hourâ was a fictional country music TV program, but there were real-life examples as well, the first ever called âVillage Barn,â broadcast from 1948 to 1950 from a New York City nightclub. Others included âHayloft Hoedown,â âABC Barn Dance,â âSaturday Night Jamboree,â âWindy City Jamboree,â âThe Old American Barn Dance,â and âMidwestern Hayrideâ - all on rival networks. The most famous entry into the genre, âHee Haw,â did air on CBS, but didn't come along until 1969. Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dfa24af203d25d2099730afbc337ad18/4831198d0729635f-ee/s540x810/521c80af27d6b161861b01ca17eec48e9bc4d874.jpg)
âMr. and Mrs. TV Showâ (1954)
âThis is going to be one of the biggest television programs to hit town in years!â
Ricky has a chance to do an âat-home' TV breakfast show, and naturally Lucy wants to be in it. Things go well until Lucy discovers Ricky only let her do the show because the sponsor insisted. Then revenge is what is served for breakfast! The live show is named âBreakfast with Ricky and Lucy.âÂ
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3510dd0f508189b197029b7b7f5f2fb0/4831198d0729635f-05/s540x810/9469d5fe911aaa04c02f135d405a93c6a346205a.jpg)
âBreakfast with Ricky and Lucyâ was inspired by "Breakfast with Dorothy and Dick." This daily radio chat show aired from 1945 through 1963, and starred Dorothy Kilgallen, journalist and reporter, and her husband Richard Kollmar, a Broadway actor and producer. There was another popular husband and wife radio breakfast show called âHi Jinxâ that starred model and actress Jinx Falkenburg and publicist Tex McCrary, which made the leap to television in 1948.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b6785e20ccfc3cbdce3998307530fe82/4831198d0729635f-7a/s540x810/02202602fe8344272b8c26a2d5e1cde88d733530.jpg)
âBullfight Danceâ (1955)
When Lucy is asked to write an article for Photoplay about what it's like being married to Ricky, she uses it to blackmail him to get to perform in a TV benefit for the Heart Fund.
The scenes of the benefit television show "Coast-to-Coast" for the Heart Fund, hosted by Ricky and featuring Lucy in the bullfight number of the episode's title, are introduced with an establishing shot of the newly-opened CBS Television City building at 7800 Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. Although âI Love Lucyâ was one of CBSâs strongest shows, Desilu was already happily ensconced at Ren Mar Studios.
âFace to Faceâ (1955)
Lucy and Ricky appear on a TV interview show from their apartment. But his new agent says the apartment is a dump, and urges them to move into ritzier quarters. The agent tells Ricky that he thinks heâs got him âplanted on the Sullivan show next monthâ.  âThe Ed Sullivan Showâ (aka âToast of the Townâ) was a Sunday night staple on CBS. In addition to hosting performers on the stage of their New York theatre, celebrities would also be in the audience, and get introduced by Sullivan to get camera time. This is what is meant by âplantedâ on the Sullivan show.
Ed Warren (Elliott Reid) is a parody of Edward R. Murrow (right), who hosted the interview show âPerson to Personâ from 1953 to 1959. Just like Murrow, Warren signs off by bidding the audience âGood night, and good luck!â
âLucy Meets Charles Boyerâ (1956)
Lucy thinks every man she sees is film star Charles Boyer. When she spots the real Boyer, Ricky convinces him to pretend to be a second rate actor who just happens to look like the star. Boyer mentions âFour Star Playhouseâ (1952-56), an anthology series sponsored by Singer and Bristol Myers. The premise of the CBS series was that Boyer, Ida Lupino, David Niven, and Dick Powell would take turns starring in episodes.
âLucy and Supermanâ (1957)
Lucy brags that she can get Superman for Little Rickyâs birthday party. When he isnât available, Lucy dresses up as the man of steel instead.Â
As the episode opens, Ricky and Little Ricky are watching âAdventures of Supermanâ on TV. Superman fans have said that this excerpt was not from the original series, but created for âI Love Lucyâ using Reeveâs double. The wires holding Superman up are clearly visible in the shot and it was commonly known that Reeve disliked using wires because of an incident early in the showâs creation. Â
âLucy Gets Chummy with the Neighborsâ (1957)
When a misunderstanding about the between Betty (Mary Jane Croft) and Lucy spreads to the boys, Ralph (Frank Nelson) rescinds his offer for Ricky to appear on one of his advertising agency's TV shows, saying âWe'll get Cugat!â For Ricky, this is the ultimate insult. In the early days of television, advertising agencies could dictate whether a show would be aired or not. Such was the case with âI Love Lucyâ in 1951. Biou Advertising represented Philip Morris, the showâs sponsor during the first several years.Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/30594484fc8ab4540055d5ecf95680d9/4831198d0729635f-26/s540x810/bd518c2061fd35b14c97697b0ab706ccb2f82f8a.jpg)
âLucy Goes To Sun Valleyâ (1958)
When Ricky, Little Ricky and Fred have to stay home to work on a television show, Lucy reluctantly takes Ethel to Sun Valley.Â
âLucy Goes To Alaskaâ (1959)Â
The Ricardos and Merztes go to Alaska where Ricky and Fred have bought some land and Ricky is doing a TV show. When Red Skeltonâs partner fails to appear, Lucy is recruited to perform with him.Â
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2f7eaa69d6d1bab0dc32829613e7ea23/4831198d0729635f-d3/s540x810/f990d382c92856be27d570a0338cfeab17943df4.jpg)
âLucy Wants a Careerâ (1959)
âI canât believe it! Lucy on television!âÂ
Looking for fulfillment outside the home, Lucy takes a job as a Girl Friday for Paul Douglas on the morning TV show âEarly Bird.â Â
The first morning news program on television was âThree To Get Ready,â a local show hosted by comedian Ernie Kovacs that aired in Philadelphia from 1950 to 1952. Although it was mostly entertainment-oriented, the program did feature news and weather segments. Its success prompted NBC to look at producing something similar on a national basis and in January 1952 the "Today Showâ premiered. CBS (Lucy's network) entered the field in 1954, but was never able to compete in the ratings.Â
âLucy Meets the Mustacheâ (1960)
Near the end of the episode, Ernie Kovacs tells Ricky to "take a good look" at Crandall (aka Lucy in disguise).Â
âTake a Good Lookâ was the name of a TV quiz show Kovacs moderated at the time. It involved a panel guessing answers based on short skits.

Okay so here's the thing
I used to not follow anyone because at some point Tumblr had this feature where if you followed tags but not people it would filter popular posts from the tags you follow on your feed.
While this feature has been gone for a long while, I retained hope that maybe they would bring it back but here we are...
So, I ask you, if you post about any of the following give a like and I'll check out your blog. Reblogging is appreciated for a bigger reach. There's also a tag limit so I won't be able to properly tag everything anyway, so I'll be ranking my interests in order of decreasing... interest
Tomb Raider (anti Kurtis Trent, otherwise love all eras and Laras)
2NE1 (OT4)
T-ara (OT6)

I believe I can fly.
I believe I can touch the sky.
I think about it every night and day.
Spread my fins and fly away.
Unfortunately, whales can't fly. But, they can jump out of the water, also known as breaching! Though humpback whales are relatively slow swimmers, able to swim at about 15 miles per hour but averaging only two to nine miles per hour, theyâre amazing acrobats.

i want to preface this with a few things
dick grayson is my favourite character. i am not here to slander him or talk bad about those who like him
fanon is what got me into dc. i have grown since and now have a substantial comic collection (at least for the few months i've been collecting). i still enjoy fanon but i am a canon person
with all of that said...
a pointless rant about dick grayson in fanon
sources listed at the bottom
this discourse surrounding dc, the batfam in particular, has really been irking my lately. i don't know why, it just has. i see so much around these characters and the way fans interact with each other here on hellsite and on tiktok (i avoid twitter like middle-aged cis white british dads avoid talking about their feelings) and i just wanna scream about it
the erasure of dick grayson's character
dick grayson isn't a himbo
this is particularly common in fanfictions given that the barrier of entry is non-existent but the idea that dick is a silly, ditzy, idiot that can't cook is arguably the complete opposite of his character
i have a feeling this idea stems from the nature of dick as nightwing, the cracking jokes whilst fighting, the appearance of not taking things seriously (when he in fact does, just not as outwardly as the likes of batman). this in and of itself is ridiculous given that a similar character, peter parker aka spider-man, also crack jokes and honestly is very similar to dick in the way he is as a hero, and yet, for the most part, is still taken seriously and isn't diminished to the same level that dick is
which could come down to public knowledge of the character
let's be honest, the majority of the public could tell you who peter parker is, have probably seen at least one live action iteration of the character, if not all 3 iconic versions (maguire, garfield, holland) most (and please forgive me for using generations) millenials and gen z can define their teen years based on which spider-man was coming out. which they went to the cinema to see. all live-action appearances are:
the amazing spider-man ('77-'79) played by nicholas hammond
spider-man (also japanese spider-man) ('78-'79) played by Shinji TĹdĹ
spider-man (1, 2, 3)('02, '04, '07) played by tobey maguire
the amazing spider-man (1, 2)('12, '14) played by andrew garfield
spider-man (homecoming, far from home, no way home)('17, '19, '21) played by tom holland
given that dick has just as many live action appearances, stretching back to before spider-man had even debuted in the comics:
the batman serial ('43) played by douglas croft
the batman and robin serial ('49) played by jonny duncan
batman ('66-'68) played by burt ward
batman forever ('95) and Batman & Robin ('97) played by chris o'donnell
titans ('18-'23) played by brenton thwaites
EDIT: in my excitement i never included the first comic appearances of either character. dick debuted on the 6th march 1940 in detective comics #38, peter debuted on 5th june 1962 in amazing fantasy #15
(i am not talking about animated appearances as for both peter and dick they are much less known to the general public than live action)
i'd say i was surprised to see the same number of appearances, but by comparing when the show/movie came out, you can see a clear difference
every live action spider-man project listed has occurred within the past 50 years, with the movies being in relatively consistent from 2002 onwards. dick grayson is more sporadic, 2 appearances in the 40s, again in the 60s, again in the 90s, and finally in the late 10s. no wonder he's less well known when you have to go back to the 90s for a movie version and even then it isn't really dick grayson (in terms of characterisation)
most people can tell you there's batman and robin, and maybe just maybe they can tell you robin is dick grayson, but that's about it. mention nightwing and they blank. and don't even try to tell someone that there's been more that one robin, it won't end well
i can hear people yelling "but dick is a sidekick and peter isn't"
yes, that is true, but dick hasn't been a sidekick since the early 80s, after he'd been around for over 4 decades. that's a pretty old sidekick. but yes, this does hold some merit but given that dick is a lot older it's interesting. and with the most recent live action appearance being titans, a show that spends the first 2 seasons exploring dick's journey from sidekick to standalone hero, it does pose some questions
that was a long tangent to basically say that an equivalent character in personality isn't erased so much in fanfiction because they have more recent and bigger exposure (probably)
also, random, but in my research i came across this list of best teen heroes and look
fig 1. image showing spider-man and dick grayson in positions 1 and 2 relatively in a fan voted list of best teen heroes, spider-man having 3446 votes and dick grayson having 3191 votes
anyway, back to the rant
a wayne family adventures (WFA) tangent
i see people blaming WFA for this but i really don't think that is the case. he may not be the same as his comic counterpart but he is not out of character. everything he does is still very much him. examples include:
comforting duke after ana broke up with him (ep. 10)
helping damian make a friend (ep. 24)
being torn between his brothers (ep. 27-28)
teasing bruce after zatanna made him superman (ep. 54)
teasing helena into swapping weapons (ep. 63) i just like this one
organising everyone back to the manor when he realised alfred was left on his own during thanksgiving (ep. 68)
picking the rainbow suit for bruce (ep. 77)
talking to a little girl who just lost her parents (ep. 80-81)
annoying wally (ep. 84) birdflash time
helping duke with the kidnapping threat (ep. 99) also like this one
competing with jason over lian and roy (ep. 108)
making tim do all the work in his apartment (ep. 111) + haley
comforting and helping damian when he doubts himself (ep. 113) arguably my favourite episode
ok that was most of them BUT seriously WFA is not the problem here
there's no "fix" for this, i just wanted to tell people to stop blaming WFA for everything wrong with new comic fans; you can enjoy WFA and enjoy the comics, the aren't mutually exclusive
WFA doesn't erase him, they just choose what to show in the limited time you get with him. the only thing i remember being "wrong" is that dick can't cook (ep. 17 - top chef)
and yeah, WFA does play into the golden retriever vibes fanon dick has... in one episode, specifically the haley episode (ep. 111) see below. if it takes 111 episodes to fall on a fanon trope, i think that is fine. if you want to include ep. 17, that's 2 episodes out of 116! that's pretty good going. even the comics have more ooc moments (see the current nightwing run)
fig. 2 screenshot from wayne family adventures showing dick grayson smiling and saying "thank you" whilst a tail wags in the background
fanfiction
unsurprisingly, fanfiction is probably to blame but don't think i'm blaming authors (i kinda am but stick with me here)
i don't think writing a comic canon charatcer should be required, but i do think writers should disclose when they haven't read the comics. from experience, i get not annoyed, but have a "ugh" moment when i read a fic and the character is ooc, but if the author has stated in the notes that they haven't read a comic and the character is probably ooc, i am still going to read the fic
ooc or not, if a fic has a decent plot, at least 6th grade (UK year 7) level writing, and not "want to punch them in the face" characters, i'll enjoy it. throw in a popular trope and it'll be a favourite
and if you tell people "hey, this is probably ooc from the comic canon" they can't get mad or blame authors... just saying
i mean the whole reason this is "the problem" is that people get mad over ooc in fan works. like i'm sorry, have you read gotham war?!?!? the current nightwing run?!?!? lots of ooc in the comics themselves
tl;dr
fanfiction is the root of all evil
no, but seriously, dick's, mis-characterisation is a product of his prevalence in media, the material people have, and a lack of disclaiming ooc in fanfics. the last point could be a solution, but honestly expecting fanfic authors to do that is ridiculous
this rant was for nothing, hope you enjoyed wasting your time
i did tell you it was pointless
(i should've called this section a conclusion bc the word count is 1559 and that is insane. it's literally longer than the essay i have due in next week that i'm only half way through)
(also, this was supposed to be the first part of a longer post about how dick is over-sexualised but at that word count i'm splitting it up)
