I always loved vortex as a kid. It was fantastic.... up until I was tall enough where my head hit the sides of the over the shoulder restraints. My last ride left my head bleeding from where my earrings were slammed into it. I still miss it tho. Such a good ride. Thank you for reminding of that video I shot so long ago. 🥺🥺🥺🥺

Ouch, yeah that sounds believable. You never knew what kind of ride you'd get with Vortex! Sometimes the ride was extra smooth, other times not. I think it depended on the day, where you sat, and how you braced yourself. It was such an amazing Arrow, plus a beauty to look at too. I still remember my final ride on it, and it's nice to look back.

I am once again asking you to imagine Scream Queen O!Steve & horror fan A!Eddie,

except in this idea/AU Eddie is the co host of a horror podcast similar to Dead Meat but it's called (u guessed it) Corroded Coffin, Eddie hosts & A!Jeff co-hosts & O!Gareth mostly works with the sound while A!Chrissy & B!Felix (unnamed freak who apparently has a canon name but idc I like the name felix & using this name made me realize gender things so it has special meaning for me now) ANYWAY Chrissy & B!Felix mostly handle research

Well they talk about all horror not just movies, they discuss books & they discuss other podcasts & of course they discuss movies. Eddie & Chrissy are slasher fans through & through, Jeff is more for the supernatural stories, when Gareth comes on an episode very occasionally he's an unrepentant fan of elevated horror like The VVitch, meanwhile if felix is on an episode it's explicitly because they're talking about cosmic horror OR horror coming out of east asia (felix is a Junji Ito devotee, as am I & yes this is me projecting onto a fictional character)

WELL their podcast is fairly popular, they're considered Z-list celebrities within popular culture maybe D-list amongst horror fans, the Corroded Coffin podcast has gone on tours & done live shows. they've even established a small podcast network they call Hellfire Club & expanded to making more shows: chrissy & felix host a folklore podcast, Jeff & a new guest every week have discussions abt the new expression of horror abt being a marginalized identity (i.e. being a black person in a white supremacist society or being a beta woman/omega in an alpha centric patriarchal culture)

Then one day their business email gets an inquiry abt a new movie coming out in the next year & the executive producer wants to know if they'd be interested in a slight PR stunt/limited podcast series around this movie.

The producer in question is one Jim Hopper, a known name who's only ever produced action flicks, apparently he's dipping his toe into the horror space bc his daughter & step-son r huge fans of the genre & encouraged him to take on a script he'd normally ignore.

The movie is called Strange Times On Main Street & it follows an ensemble cast tht r meant to b the residents of a dwindling town in nowhere Indiana in the early 1980s, the horror factor comes in when the different characters start to see things tht might not b real but all seem connected to an individual who has terrorized the town for decades, culminating in a town hall meeting where they're told there's nothing tht can b done; so the situation dissolves into an eerily quiet mob tht ends up hunting down this person & the movie ends abruptly with this guy being executed in broad daylight practically in the middle of Main street.

They agree right away. The gimmick involves Eddie & Chrissy acting like the hosts of a true crime podcast who are "interviewing" the people of the town supposedly years after the incident. Everyone is excited because there r some big names involved in the movie, most notably the undisputed scream queen Steve Henderson who got half of his fame from working his way up from among stunt doubles on action movies so he's known to do his own stunts.

Well, it's a fantastic process & absolutely everyone has a wonderful time & Eddie sort of bumbles his way thru the episode w Steve (whose character is implied to have been the one to kill the supposed antagonist) but Steve finds it cute & gives Eddie his number.

The movie does well & wins not only a Screamy Award but an actual Oscar. Steve even wins the first Oscar of his career for best omega man in a leading role. He kisses his date before going up to give his speech, who's his date you ask? Eddie Munson host of popular podcast Corroded Coffin

Backlogbooks Bingo Challenge - Horror Recommendations (part 1)

To the surprise of no one, I'm starting off my challenge recommendations with horror! I'm getting the publication dates off of storygraph, so if I'm wrong, I take no responsibility <3

60s

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson -- Shirley Jackson! The queen! This one is such a combination of horror and humor and then horror again, about two sisters who live alone, ostracized by their town because of their family's dark past.

70s

Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon -- A very creepy folk horror novel about a family who leaves The City to come to a Small Town in new england, getting Close to Nature. Naturally, the townspeople have some dark secrets. I loved the atmosphere in this one--the slow building of dread, and trying to piece together exactly what the Dark Secret at the center of the harvest home festival is.

Jaws by Peter Benchley -- Okay, I don't know if I can actually recommend this, because to be honest with you, the movie is so much better. But also, if you're a shark movie fiend, this is a Piece Of History. Feel free to reply and argue with me if you love this book!

Carrie by Stephen King -- This book is about Carrie, a perpetually bullied girl who has the chance to go to the prom. I'm sure you know how it goes from there--but even if you do, I recommend reading the book. It's a heartbreaking horror novel, and I really enjoyed (slash hated) the way the tension mounts as you get closer and closer to The Bad Thing

The Shining by Stephen King -- Jack Torrance has a big new job as the caretaker at the Overlook Hotel during the off-season, and there's some evil afoot! Again, I feel like you know how it goes from there, but King is really so good at building dread and tension.

80s

A Nest of Nightmares by Lisa Tuttle -- Recently rereleased in the Paperbacks from Hell line, this is a collection of horror short stories that mostly center on women, with horrors both mundane and paranormal (but an emphasis on the paranormal). These stories were so creepy to me, and I really enjoyed the way that mood built. TW for rape (I can tell you which story for sure if you want! I'll just need to double check my copy to make sure I'm not misremembering)

Misery by Stephen King - He's back again! This is actually my favorite Stephen King novel (setting aside the dark tower series to make it a fair fight). Paul Sheldon, a bestselling novelist, is taken captive by his biggest fan, Annie Wilkes. Annie is like, my favorite villain I think. I've been wanting to reread this book for years because of her <3

House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski -- Okay recommending this book does feel a little like trying to trap someone, but I love it. So! Will Navidson's house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside; Johnny Truant is obsessed with a book by a blind man about a film that Navidson made that doesn't exist; everyone is lost in the labyrinth, including you. Please join me in this bonkers book. Conspiracy board supplies are not included, but you're encouraged to gather them up yourself as you go.

Uzumaki by Junji Ito -- Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is haunted by spirals. This is not as metaphorical as I imagined it would be when I first picked it up! The body horror in this book is insanely good, and there are some lines/images that are going to live in my head Forever. Highly recommend if you like horror manga.

2003

Come Closer by Sara Gran -- This is a fantastic possession book--it keeps you right in her point of view as she spirals down, trying to figure out if she is in fact possessed or if there's some other break with reality. I loved the "are you possessed" quiz as a guiding structure.

2006

The Ruins by Scott Smith -- Trapped in the jungle, far from home and with no way to get help, a group of friends face an inhuman horror. This had some of the most skin crawling body horror I've seen, and I loved the development of the antagonist (don't wanna say more because spoilers!). Great survival horror. What a terrible group of people to be trapped with.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks -- If you love yourself some worldbuilding and zombies, check out this book! World War Z gives you vignettes about different areas of the world, and different aspects of life during a zombie apocalypse. It was a slow read for me, but I really enjoyed the details.

2007

Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill -- An old rock star buys a ghost online, because he's a dumbass (aka because he "has a thing for the macabre"), and has to go through hell to get rid of it. It's been years, but I remember being deeply creeped out by this book!

2010

Feed by Mira Grant -- More zombies! This one set twenty years after the zombie apocalypse, following two bloggers who are working to uncover a conspiracy behind the Infected. This had political thriller vibes mixed in with the horror, which kept a fast pace, and I loved the main characters. Eventually I may even finish the series!

2011

The Ritual by Adam Nevill -- Four old friends try to push aside old and new tensions for a reunion hiking trip. Since that's not working, they try to take a shortcut and end up very, very lost--and very deep in woods that have more than just animals to worry about. I held my breath through a lot of the first half of this book. Good for folk horror fans or people who want to be very afraid of every forest they walk into.

2013

Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson -- Shirley Jackson again! This one is a collection of short stories, including "The Summer People" and "Louisa, Please Come Home," which are some of my favorites. Creeping dread, domestic horror, and the question of what happens when your life takes a sudden, unexplainable turn. Definitely recommend the edition with an introduction by Ottessa Moshfegh!

2014

Through the Woods by E.M. Carroll -- A collection of short horror comics, with dark fairy tale vibes. I want to eat E.M. Carroll's art style, or at least cover my house with prints from this book.

Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix -- Have you ever had a nightmare about being trapped in an ikea? Or, sorry, Definitely Not Ikea (So We Don't Get Sued)? Are you tired of your retail job? This is the book for you! Haunted ikea: much more terrifying than I expected it to be.

The Grownup by Gillian Flynn -- This is a quick, 64 page story about a young woman who pretends to be a psychic to get by, and ends up being pulled deeper and deeper into a family's dysfunction when she promises to help rid their home of ghosts or other powerful forces.

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer -- Horror science fiction about Area X, an unexplained phenomenon where earth is returning to "pristine nature" with a horrific twist (or many of them). Our main character, the biologist, is one of my favorite characters I've ever read. I'm actually a little insane about her. Join me!

Naturally this has seen him build up a steady growing body of work in its newly arisen human male on furry female tag demographic as well as a sizeable fanbase among women. Most chalk this up to the slight resemblance he has to the line of Warrior Monk sex dolls and his modest, humble charisma and debate rages I he would look better without the beard and tattoo (which are temporary). This silver tongued sweetheart has made quite a name for himself with his ever growing body of work seeing him woo many a fine pretty sexy thing in Hell and even the living world and Heaven itself!! This has seen sales of his movies and views on the SFP website hit numbers mathmeticians have never even possibly heard of and that's not changing anytime soon. Many a woman has sent fan letters sharing intimate details they've had fantasizing about this masked imp visting them in their dreams to work his demonic magic on them....which has inspired the scriptwriters much to Mr.Sketch's delight...

Rumours say that Demon Queen Chloe with her vast amount of free time and ultimate omnipotence and a few individuals made up a tier systems of studs & bull on what particular girls really like and want in a man. those who've qualified are all equal in endowment but it’s particularly ranked by emotional maturity . There are 4 tiers in total as follows as well examples of the guys who fall within each.

Tier 1 is the Lovable Every man Himbo: these guys are the every regular men who poses huge cocks and a level of relative maturity but in some way foreign to the Lewd occurrences . These are some who fall in this tier. Jon Herron, Dipper Pines, Izuku Midoriya, and Jaune Arc.

Welcome to Revenge of the Underrated!

Some of you asked me to put a "haven't watched both" to be more fair to the more unknown movies, but I've seen other tournaments doing this and I think it limits too much who can participate in the polls. So what I decided to do is a double elimination!

What does that mean? That means a movie has to lose twice to be eliminated. In other words, there will be a sorts of losers bracket that'll be part of main bracket. I'm undecided on whether to do this for only one round or the whole bracket, as it would make the tournament very long. Do let me know if you have any opinion about it.

Why Pawns are the Worst 5D Chess Pieces

Pawns fuck everything up. They are my most favorite and most hated piece on the board. On one hand, they’re complicated, which is pretty interesting. On the other hand, they’re fucking complicated, which is infuriating. Let me explain why. Point one: Pawns are the only piece that make a distinction between “forward“ and “backward.“ When extending to higher dimensional space, the addition of extra directions begs the question, what does forward mean? Well, it depends on the layout of the board. Take this for example

We see that the x, z, and v axes do not bring us any closer to the opponents side, yet the y and w directions do. So should be allow a pawn to be able to move two “forward” directions (y-w) at once to capture? Obviously not! It breaks the balance of the game. Should we consider that restriction for all pieces? This is a fierce debate between me, and literally everyone I’ve every explained this to. I think we should. Point two: Pawns are a combination of 3 different pieces, each with unique conditions to their moves that almost no other piece has.

When actually coding an engine, you need to add all sorts of conditions that take this into account. The way I’ve done it is make the pawn a composite piece, consisting of a non-capture forward motion, a capturing forward-diagonal motion, or a starting double forward non-capturing motion. If we take this approach though, both queens, shogi pieces, and a check detector moveset can be defined as composites of other simpler pieces, with shogi pieces also utilizing “forward“ directions.

So complicated, but useful. Fine pawns, you win this one. Its interesting and actually not too hard, once you figure out all the fucked up conditions... for the most part...

Then you realize they can En Passant AND they’re the only piece to promote. Great, the promotion condition is made easy by defining extra-dimensional forwards, but the actual moves are worse. Not only is En passant only valid for one turn, but it also requires another piece be in a different location than the target motion, and captures a piece that it doesnt directly land on. No other piece capture works like this. Castling works fairly similar, and we can draw parallels to the two. You can view En Passant as first moving the pawn horizontally to capture, then moving it forward in a second command. Promoting is moving the pawn forward, and then moving a friendly queen on top of it. This also neatly applies to shogi drops. Castling is just moving the king and rook accordingly on the same turn, but like en passant requires another piece to be in a specific space other than where the king lands, and has non-checking conditions. Not that I want to think about Castling on a 5D Chess board, god forbid anyone fucking suggests it again. But what we learn from this is you need to break moves up into something smaller, that I call commands. A simple piece from ,piece to, coordinate from, coordinate to. By making moves out of these, they are also completely reversible. So great, moves are made of commands, we’re done here right? Not yet because this problem is made worst by the parallel universes.

See once we start introducing an actual multiverse, we start to need to perform multiple moves within a single turn, then submit our turn when all those moves are complete. Its not too bad if you’ve understood the move break down, but its still slightly annoying. Then comes the network. God fucking help me with the networking. Currently I’m writing a serializer that converts a turn into a series of integers and the nested structure is not conductive to that. This wouldnt be a fucking problem if it weren’t for the god damn pawns though. Note some of these are actually reverse pawns as well, so they can go the opposite direction around the torus.

My Trans-Lesbian-Awakening Characters lol

Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Moon)

I believe Haruka was my first introduction to a lesbian and gender nonconforming (gnc) character! Discovering she was a girl along with Usagi and Minako blew my mind. The idea of a masc presenting girl was a revelation and I also found the fact other girls were attracted to her to be enviable, even when I watched the English version where her queerness was erased.

Trixie Tang (The Fairly Odd Parents)

The episode "The Boy Who Would Be Queen" was cathartic for young me. Although the episode was about overcoming gender stereotypes, Trixie's story felt relatable from a trans perspective. Her male persona outside of school and her interests in doing "boy stuff" but feeling pressured to maintain a feminine image for social acceptance resonated with me deeply. It's a shame we never got to see this side of Trixie outside the one episode.

Kaoru Matsubara (Powerpuff Girls Z)

I remember her introduction was her dodging a flock of fan girls on her skateboard. I was immediately pleased that the anime version of my favourite Powerpuff girl was that of a womanizing gender-bending skater girl lol. I felt annoyed along with her that she was forced to wear a skirt in her magical girl form.

Yui Goido (The World God Only Knows)

Even with her out-of-nowhere appearance in the second season, I was immediately enthralled by her princely demeanor and the way she casually blurred gender roles. I had to read her arc in the manga that was tragically skipped over and it screamed trans. Yui's conflict was her being forced to be traditionally feminine. Her body swapping and getting to live as a boy seemed to have given her gender euphoria that when she returned to her body, she started wearing the boys' school uniform, changed her hair to make it more androgynous, and started using "boku" to refer to herself (which is a masculine pronoun). Her personality also becomes a lot more confident, it's like watching a trans masc person finally be able to be themselves! The show may not appeal to me now but Yui was a big comfort character.

Mettaton (Undertale)

Mettaton's unique and subtle trans story felt so palpable to me that it made me resonate strongly with his character. When I learnt about his backstory, I felt genuine sympathy for him and his cousins. I love his charisma and how much queer energy he exudes!

Pearl (Steven Universe)

Pearl will always be a deeply important character to me for how much she contributed to my queer actualization. I think it's because I grew up with her as the cartoon series ran throughout my entire teenhood that she has been the most pivotal character for me. Getting to see this character who epitomized lesbianism and growth felt integral to my understanding of the queer community and myself.
