I found this lost piece of fanart I made for @c0zmico 's lovely Dotless OC design on Instagram that I made like...months ago. the file got corrupted, and suddenly, it's okay again??? tf??? . Anyway, I was big into essentially making up outfits to put characters in like my little dolls, and I thought of this cute blue outfit he could wear on streams 💙

Dose # 2 - Harakāt and mudūd; and the tanwīn
It’s very important before we start discussing the alphabets to start by introducing the vowel and diacritics in Arabic.
Tumblr media
Short vowels (ḥarakat, singular is ḥaraka)
There are three short vowels are written either on top of the letter or below it. It shows you how the letter is supposed to be pronounced. There are three short vowels (harakaat)
فَتْحَة (fatḥa)
A small diagonal line written on top of the letter, it has a short [ah] sound. The word fatha means to open, your mouth will be slightly open when you pronounce it. I made a simple drawing to show you how it's supposed to look like.
Here is the haraka, and this is how it looks like on top of a letter
Tumblr media
ضَمَّة (ḍamma)
A small letter و written on top of the letter, it a short [oo] sound. The word ḍamma comes from the word ضمَّ which means hug or bring closer. Your lips will come closer in the shape of a small o when you pronounce it.
Tumblr media
كَسْرَة (kasra)
A small diagonal line written below the letter, it has a short [i] sound.
There are three ḥarakat and a forth one that is called sukoon سُكون which is a small circle written on top of a letter indicating the absence of a vowel. Sukoon can never be at the start of a word, and no two sukoons can come one after the other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vowels mudood  (sing. Madd)
The long vowels are three letters : ا-و-ي . An important thing to note in the long vowels is that each one of these letters is a vowel and a consonant at the same time, therefore we can consider them as a semi-vowel.
I. Examples : the three letters are vowels
1- ا here it is compared to a fatḥa
2- و here it is compared to a ḍamma
ي here it is compared to kasra
The vowels are twice as long as the harakat.
Usually, we say that the long vowels have a corresponding haraka / short vowel. It’s not difficult to associate.
ا’s short vowel is fatḥa
و’s short vowel is ḍamma
ي’s short vowel is kasra
Pro tip ~ "short vowel" is one second long, and a "long vowel" is two seconds long, if you're not sure, you count one second or two on your fingers to make sure you get the time right. Some people use claps too. One clap = short vowel, two claps = long vowel ~
How can you tell if the semi-vowel is a vowel or a consonant?
If you see a new word and you don’t know if one of the semi-vowels ا/و/ي is a vowel or consonant, look at the semi-vowel and look at the letter that comes before it.
The semi-consonant needs to have sukoon AND it needs to be preceded with a letter that has a short vowel that matches it (both conditions need to be there) in order for the semi-vowel to be a vowel.
مَوْ      vs  مُوْ
For example the word in purple, the و  is a semi-consonant since the letter that came before it does not have a corresponding haraka, while the word in green is a vowel since the haraka on the letter corresponds with the vowel. Here is an audio to demonstrate the difference.
Important note : the letter ا as a vowel has another form, which is a dotless ي and it looks like this ى . It's pronounced as ا [ah]
Tumblr media
Other diactrics (tanween)
The definition of Noonation (or tanween) is : “an additional  ن  (noon) that is pronounced and not written to mark the indefinite noun.”
The word Noonation and Tanween are derived from the letter  ن  (noon).  But  it was written that way to differentiate it from the “real” noon.
Because the Tanween is the mark of the indefinite noun and it is written at the end of the word, it will never come with a noun that is preceded with “al” or any other definite noun. It will never accompany a verb either.
There are three types of noonation (Tanween) :
Tanween fatḥ (تنوين فتح)  and it’s marked with two fatḥas (فتحتان) and an additional alif ا at the end of the word. It’s pronounced as “an”
Tanween ḍamm (تنوين ضم)  it’s marked with two ḍammas at the end of the word. It’s pronounced as “un”
Tanween Kasr (تنوين كسر)  it’s marked with two kasras written under the last letter of the word. It’s pronounced as “in”
Keep in mind that tanwen fatḥ is written on the last letter, not on the alif.
Example :
Tumblr media
When one stops at the word that has tanween, the tanween is not pronounced. For example, if the word that has tanween is followed by a comma (,) or full stop (.) the tanween is not read.

you mentioned imperfect clones and it got me to thinking were their any clones that were two chararters combined even by accident?
I'm just imagining Joey at 3 am no hours asleep for the past 3 days on his 15th cup of coffee trying to make a bendy clone but accidently also presses like the alice, or boris switch as well and combines bendy with one of em.
(( that's a very fun idea! i definitely have a few clones that are "two characters combined!" i'm not sure how this is possible because each character has their own separate ink that's not really combinable, maybe two drawings of different characters got inserted into the machine by accident? idk how it really works BUT THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT-
you've already interacted with a "combined" character already! but this combination is more subtle
Tumblr media
it's Billy! he's "combined" with boris, you can tell from the way his horns are, the dots on his cheeks, and the dotless gloves! he also loves to eat, just like a boris does!
i don't want to spoil the other two I have, but i did show a sneak peek at the other one before! think..... pull down screen
I'd like to create more but i don't really have any ideas 😅 i want their appearance to lean more towards "Bendy" than any other character if i do design more of these "combined characters" ))

In Warsh Quranic orthography (the prevailing Quranic orthography in North Africa), there is a special form of noon [ن] written with a thinner vertical stroke, used to indicate a noon missing from the early Quranic manuscripts. This form of noon is used contrastively with the normal noon. According to Warsh orthography literature (for example, Nusrat Al Kutab, by Mohammed a-Tuhami Ibn a-TTayeb; see Figure 1), when there are two consecutive noons, in words such as ننجي and تامنا [in the examples given from the literature this word is spelled "تامننا"], the second noon in ننجي should be thin, whereas in تامنا, it is the first noon, instead (see Figure 3, Figure 4, and Figure 5). However, this depends on the vowelization of the noon; for instance, in Quran 10:103 and 19:72, the second noon in ننجي keeps its regular shape (U+0646), simply because of the difference in vowelization (see Figure 6 and Figure 7).
Tumblr media
Figure 1: Nusrat Al Kutab, by Mohammed a-Tuhami Ibn a-TTayeb, (p. 27), Dar al Rissala, 2013. [ID: Arabic text in two columns. I have marked the words in question in red; on the left is the word نُنْجِي; on the right is the word تَامَننَا. The words are marked with diacritics, as is standard in Qur'anic text. I think neither noon in either word is the thin noon. End ID]
Tumblr media
Figure 3: The Quran 12:11, Al Dar Al Alamia Lil Kitab, 2014. [ID: Arabic text with the words "لاَ تَامَننَا" marked in red by the authors. The first (rightmost) noon is a thin noon; its vertical stroke comes up higher than that of the second noon, and also descends beneath the line. End ID]
Tumblr media
Figure 4: The Quran 12:110, Al Dar Al Alamia Lil Kitab, 2014. [ID: Arabic text with geometric decoration at the right of the page. The word ڢَنُنجِى has been marked in red by the authors; the second (leftmost) noon is a thin noon, with a thin vertical stroke stretching higher and lower than that of the noon to its right. The jim and dotless yeh employ a calligraphic convention in which each is written below, not directly to the left of, the preceding letter. Also note that the feh has been drawn with its dot underneath the letterform. End ID]
Tumblr media
Figure 6: The Quran 10:103, Al Dar Al Alamia Lil Kitab, 2014. [ID: Arabic text with the word نُنَجِّى marked in red. Neither noon is a thin noon because each one employs a different diacritic (dhamma and then fatha). The jim and dotless yeh are each written below the letter preceding them. The shadda is placed above the jim while the kasra is placed below it. End ID]

Every Ninety One Song Reviewed: “Biz,” 2023
youtube
“Bız,” released ahead of the album Gap, 2023 Music credits: Dulat Mukhametkaliev (ZaQ), Daniyar Kulumshin (Bala) Lyrics credits: Dulat Mukhametkaliev (ZaQ) Music video director: Askhat Bayanov
(Brief pedantic editor’s note: the song’s title is not “Biz,” as I originally wrote it, but “Bız," since the new Kazakh Latin alphabet uses the dotless I. If you speak American English, it sounds like the middle I in “bit,” so you were probably pronouncing it correctly even though I technically wasn’t spelling it correctly. If there’s a way to update the Unicode in the post title I don’t know it.)
At last we have the slightly-delayed pre-release single to the long-delayed album. It will make no difference in the long run, but for posterity’s sake, Ninety One originally said the music video would come out the 25th (the song was already available on streaming platforms by the time of the announcement), then changed that to the 26th, then had to make a sheepish Telegram post saying well actually the 27th, and finally released the darn thing after 11 pm Almaty time on the 27th. They’re not doing fantastic with meeting deadlines they set themselves, of late. But it’s a minor series of flaws, really; growing pains. I hope someday we get a little bit more of a glimpse into what it takes to take an enterprise like this running.
On to “Bız,” which has arguably the same relation to Gap as “Su Asty” did to Qarangy Zharyq and “Men Emes” did to its namesake EP, and those are big shoes to fill. “Bız” has less going on, both musically and lyrically, than either of those two. It’s a fun little hype track, especially when ZaQ decides to experiment with a goofier flow: “How you forgot about ME? Мығда NineTY? O-N-E?” But it’s not as lyrically ambitious; it’s basically a platform for the guys to talk about how awesome they are in the face of, once again, Vaguely Defined Adversity. The closest we get to anything substantial is ZaQ’s “My style is not accepted by your generation,” which is weak sauce when you consider what he brought to the table in “Men Emes.”
The other slightly worrying issue with “Bız” is how much it feels like Zaqira and the Three Singers. That may partly be due to circumstance: I’ll go ahead and speculate that Alem’s TV commitments meant he wasn’t available for much of the MV filming (which is why there are about three solo shots of him total) and Ace has been trying to slay the logistical hydra of the album release and tour setup (which may help explain why he looks so tense and preoccupied during his verse, especially in contrast to Bala’s looser performance). And ZaQ’s brain as Ninety One’s principal philosophical engine is not new. But they have been riding hard on We Are a Bonded Foursome for a year now; if they let ZaQ get out too far ahead without some obvious attempts at balance they risk doing some harm to that brand they’re so carefully cultivating.
Fortunately this is a pre-release, not a title track. I think they played the MV just right, for what it’s worth. Although Askhat Bayanov is still at the helm (and Nurs Bazarbay is director of photography, and Nurila Shakirova is producer and first assistant director, and Adil Kazkenov has a backstage credit -- anon, I still owe you that staff overview, as practically everyone I would mention worked on this video), we don’t have any callbacks to the symbolism-filled promo videos. It’s Ninety One in space, dancing and looking hot. They’ve actually never done a dance-performance-focused video before; it makes sense to do it now, as a calling card, before we get to the meatier (hopefully) content of the album.
How’s the Hair/Styling? Good! Bala’s undercut suits him, and in truth Zhadra has been doing especially well by her husband of late. Shame we couldn’t get a lingering shot of Ace in the tiara, though. Should You Start Here? I think I’m going to prefer “Gap” as an introduction -- we’ll see -- but as Boastful OT4 goes, this may outrank “Bata.”

Disguises for the girls and new names.
Both of their names mean star because that's what I associate both girl with, although in different ways.
Jennette with night time stars and Athy as a precursor to the sun.
Yıldız is a turkish name spelled with dotless i's so that's how I'm going to write it.

Nightspeed Array
Tumblr media
Note the ligature rules present in the example above the key. Came up with this LITERALLY in my mind while coming home, mentally counting the amount of glyphs and coming up with the exceptions like the lack of a horizontal dotless line glyph, the letters A, M, N and ', you know.
I believe this one is neat, defunct, yet could've existed as an actual script irl like, a long time ago.
Name is "Nightspeed" because it showcases the ligature rules well, and "array" because I didn't want to use anything usual like "cipher" or "rules" or "alphabet".

First tumblr post
Hi everyone who's reading this, welcome to this tumblr blog of mine.
It's 12:51 am as of writing this.
Anyways, I'd love to give this blog a really generic name like Nhat Minh Phan's Tumblr (not going too boring like "This is the Tumblr blog of Nhat Minh Phan and it's very generic I swear to-" or whatever). But you know, this name has Tumblr in it so it's not allowed. So in order to get what I want (the most generic name I can get), I was forced to "get creative".
First, I replaced the u of "Tumblr" with the set union symbol (∪). Yet, symbols like it aren't allowed. Well then, I'll replace the r with a Turkish dotless i (ı) followed by a dash. I guess the dotless i is considered a symbol and dashes are not allowed to be at the end of the name so that failed.
In the end, nhat-minh-phan-s-tumblir is a compromise. Not too proud of it, but I'm stuck with it I think.
For now, don't expect me to update this blog regularly, or ever.
For now at least.
I don't think anyone'll read this. I'm not gonna add a tag.
If you're reading this though...
uh...
I hope you enjoyed it?
Yeah, that's it.

Reminder
Hello, lovely people!
We have a small quiz of Friday, are you ready?
The quiz will cover lessons 1-5
As we do each week, here is a reminder of the important info about the letters seen in lesson # 5, I'll include some additional details so that it's clearer. I have three important reminders / points that I'd like to draw your attention to.
Tumblr media
1-The different forms of the letter هـ
Tumblr media
Note : one of the final forms of ه looks a lot like تَاء مَرْبوطَة (the tied taa'), the only difference is that the ه doesn't have dots while the ة does.
Here's a small cheat sheet :
ـــه ه >>>> هـ ة ـة >>>>ت
Tumblr media
2-The letter alif as a consonant
This is a small cheat sheet for the letter alif with the hamza, since it can be confusing.
Form wise, it's the most challenging letter to master. It's kind of like the drama queen of Arabic. This is why I didn't want to start with it.
The good news is, that each variation is read the same way. Look at the first purple line for example .
The hamza (the top part of the alif) can either be written alone on the line (row #1); it could be written on ا (row #2) which is the most commonly seen form; it could be written on a و (row # 3) or on top of a dotless ي (row #4). There are also cases where the consonant ا is written alone without hamza as well.
All the letters in the purple column are pronounced the same way, the exact same way which is the sound you find [here]. It's basically the sound of alif + sukoon
All the letters in the green column are pronounced the same way, you can find the sound [here]. This is the letter alif + fatḥa
All the letters in blue column are pronounced the same way, the audio is [here]. This is the letter alif + ḍamma
Finally, the letters in the red column are pronounced the same way. [audio]. This is the letter alif + kasra
Tumblr media
For the time being, we will not study the grammatical rule on when to use each form, I'd just like you to know that there are multiple forms and how to read them.
Tumblr media
3- The letter أ + long vowels
Tumblr media
This is an example of the letter ا (consonant) along with the vowels, the first row is the consonant alif + the vowel alif. Both forms are the same آ and ءا are the exact same things but different writings.
The second row is the consonant ا + the vowel و
The third row is the consonant ا + the vowel ي
Think of the semi-consonant as a sofa bed, it can be used as a sofa (the consonant) or as a bed (the vowel), depending on the situation (the word itself).
Tumblr media
Bonus : how to tell them apart?
So many forms, this is confusing, right?
Let's try to find tips and tricks to help us memorize them!
ئ vs ى vs ي ــئـ vs ـيـ ـئ vs ـى vs ـي
The row in pink is a form of the letter alif (consonant) , you can tell because there is a hamza. The hamza + dotless yaa' always means that it's an alif
The part in green (the dotless yaa') is a form of alif (the vowel), this one is only found at the end of the word, this is why it doesn't have a middle form.
Finally in orange, our old friend, the letter ي, as long as it has dots, it's either the consonant yaa' or the vowel yaa'. Check the end of lesson #2 for how to distinguish the vowel yaa' vs the consonant yaa'
