I saw you started S. by Abrams and Dorst. I just finished it and wanted to know what you though?
Hey!! Thanks so much for the reminder to keep reading it, school started again in earnest and I tend to read multiple books at a time, so it kind of fell to the wayside. Picked it up again a couple days ago! I just started chapter 4– so far I really like it! My favorite part is the unique “style” so to speak, the margins, inserts, etc. (Forever grateful I seem to have all my inserts, nearly all in order) As for the actual text of “Ship of Theseus,” I could kind of take it or leave it. It’s interesting enough, but meh. It’s fine. I’m more intrigued by the Jen/Eric plot line(s?), especially the stuff with Desjardins, Moody, SERIN(!!), that’s what has really piqued my interest. Most books I kind of amble through, “oh, I wonder what’ll happen next? Sure, that’s nice, la la la.” But those plot lines have really hooked me, especially because you get to see the beginning and end/later simultaneously. What happened in the middle?? How did they get from point A to point C?? I’m incredibly intrigued, and very excited to find out.
it may seem a little silly, especially because I’m not even halfway through the book, but I’m already excited to read it a second time. I’m trying to enjoy the ✨mystery✨ for the moment, BUT I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!! I’m looking forward to reading it again and going “OH I get it now!!” and watching everything slot into place.
How did you find it? I’d love to hear your thoughts, but spoiler-free, if you’re able! :)

Day 3 of reading S by J.J. Abrams/Doug Dorst:
SPOILERS AHEAD
I've finished the actual text of the novel by V.M. Straka, which was a slog not gonna lie. It's got so much mystery to it that I find it frustrating, and it annoys me that the main character doesn't complete either of his two missions (figuring out who he was and killing Vévoda).
Wish me luck for the first wave of marginalia!

Started reading S. by Doug Dorst and J.J. Abrams and idk if its the ADHD talking but I think it's way more accessible than House of Leaves honestly. That's not to say that HoL is bad, just that it can be a HORRIBLE slog to get through at times with its academic language and large swaths of repetitive text. It is by no doubt a very good book, but I've had it for over a year and have sadly not been able to finish it yet.
S. On the other hand, engages with the reader more easily with how the 2 other readers leaving notes are fairly down to earth and informal, making it an easier read imo. That doesn't mean it takes any less time for me to get through however, because the way I've chosen to read it is to read all the typed out text in a single chapter first and then go back and read the notes and extras. Maybe it'd be even easier for someone who reads more books regularly but I haven't been able to do that in a long time so :/

Okay my favourite thing about S so far, from a realism standpoint, is Jen starts out writing in ballpoint and it looks awful so when she switches to a fountain pen there's a drastic improvement in her handwriting. (They even mimic shading ink)
Seriously people (right handed ones anyway), fountain pens really help. You don't need to apply pressure like a ballpoint and the ink flow helps smooth the letters out.
