Gabriel Urbina: Oooh, two come to mind!

S. by Doug Dorst and J.J. Abrams is the first one. A literary mystery that unfolds in the marginalia and annotations of a shifting, mysterious novel. If Dracula is reading an account after the papers have been put in sequence, this is getting to be a part of the story that emerges as the papers are put in sequence. An experience like no other, and it really does make you feel like you become Mina Harker for a little while as you read it.

And then Jamie McKelvie's brilliant, gothic One For Sorrow just released its first issue and I want everyone to read this book. Dark, thrilling, with tremendous characters, set in the same era as Dracula and exploring a lot of the same preoccupations of modernity clashing against the occult and supernatural. Plus, oh my god, it's so beautiful, just look at this thing:

Day 3 of reading S by J.J. Abrams/Doug Dorst:

SPOILERS AHEAD

I've finished the actual text of the novel by V.M. Straka, which was a slog not gonna lie. It's got so much mystery to it that I find it frustrating, and it annoys me that the main character doesn't complete either of his two missions (figuring out who he was and killing Vévoda).

Wish me luck for the first wave of marginalia!

ergodic literature is defined by the enhanced physical difficulty of traversing the text. House of Leaves is ergodic because it weighs 1168g (more than my fucking laptop) and S* is ergodic because it's fucking hardback; you have to hold the book level to stop the inserts falling out; and this copy was brand new, fucking expensive, and hasn't pissed me off yet**, so I don't want to sweat on it***. Any additional difficuly presented by formatting is ancilliary: I would normally refuse to read a book purely for being this difficult to hold.

*it's much easier to refer to it as Ship of Theseus VM Straka, they only didn't deep fiction it because of ego and expecting jjabrams name to somehow "improve" sales. On the back they say he wrote for Lost and Fringe. As if that's a GOOD THING.

** unlike House of Leaves which I bought used, held in contempt for a period, used as a doorstop, and spilled so much coffee on it might literally have changed the weight of my copy, weigh yours and compare. I have the remastered full-colour edition, but mine has even more colours because****.

*** I have incredibly sweaty hands****

****in addition to sweatyness, my hands are usually inky. I am poor enough that I have to be able to re-sell S if it sucks, so half my reading time is spent washing my hands and making notes with a very untrustworthy fountain pen
