Fell into a new series. Whoops 🫢
Decided to do some designs for some Lannister ladies who didn't appear in the show/books (yet). A lot of them don't really have much in way of descriptions so I kinda just went wild🤷♀️
I'm still slogging through the books so these are very show-inspired (plus I love the costume design of the earlier seasons, fuck it). Joanna's white-blonde hair is inspired by @amuelia's headcanon. I think it's a really cool idea :3
Reblogs are appreciated❤️

I do hope when the Lannister regime inevitably collapses that Martyn and Dorna manage to get themselves, Janei and Joy to safety.
We don't know much of him but given Martyn is around 14 I think he can learn from his family's mistakes.

Dorna was a gentle soul, never comfortable but at home with friends and kin around her. She had done well by their children, dreamed of having grandchildren, prayed seven times a day, loved needlework and flowers.

That's some interesting stuff about the Lannisters. And goes into their toxic nature. And the nature of Westerosi society.
Lannisters, Sex, and Power
“Everything is about sex except sex. Sex is about power.” ~ Oscar Wilde
Perhaps I’ve shown my hand a little too soon — perhaps I should have left you hanging. But sex is a key means by which Lannisters in A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF) cement and legitimise power.

Yk what Criston Cole's tragedy is? Deep down that man is a Kevan Lannister. If Viserys had sense he would have given him a nice quiet hostage wife and couple of kids and never ever ever let him join the kingsguard because that is not the sort of man you put in an order with a bunch of other men and expect it to go well
#patriarchial man who goes crazy without a woman in his life to project onto and confine in the bounds of respectable gender performance#rip dorna swyft youd have loved this dude but u were born 300 yrs too late#criston cole#hotd thoughts#hotd#house of the dragon

i've spent the last year getting my degree in genderbent theon studies so lemme say some shit real quick. i'll probably make a seperate post about The Themes, but this is about the logistics, babeyyy 🫶
"thea" vs. asha: pick your hostage
from the get-go, whether it is theon ("thea") or asha who is taken hostage, the intent would be to 1) shore up the power of the loyal regions in mainland westeros, and 2) "neuter "the iron islands. a northern or riverlands match is the best option, as both lack any significant fleet (which is bizarre in and of itself, but that's what grrm went with), balancing out the reach's naval superiority with the redwyne fleet.
in canon, we don't get any in-depth explorations of how women experience the hostage system. we know of dorna swyft, who was given to house lannister as a hostage until house swyft could pay off its debts. dorna would later marry kevan lannister, which tyrion describes as ser harys swyft's "greatest accomplishment". tyrion is naturally biased, but a relatively minor vassal getting to marry into the ruling house IS a serious step up. however, this is only one case, with it's own unique circumstances.
which brings us to my original question: would asha or "thea" be taken? asha is the obvious choice in a two-greyjoy-daughters scenario, as she's the legal heir, but asha is also a lot less malleable. she's around 13 by the end of balon's rebellion, and though women's opinions or identity wouldn't be given much weight or consideration in this context, the intent of a marriage pact would be to build a working alliance and mend rifts between regions. that's a lot more difficult when the conquering party doesn't have a mostly blank slate to work with.
also, theon was balon's last son and legal heir, but even he was essentially written off as dead in canon. i imagine a daughter would be regarded as similar to a salt wife, taken from her family by conquest due to her male relatives "weakness"/inability to protect her. it would be too much for balon's ego and sense of ironborn masculinity to bear, so i don't doubt he would consider her "as good as dead" as well, even if the conquering party (robert baratheon & co) couldn't have anticipated this.
most importantly, as we see AFFC, "the laws of the green lands" do not count for much on the iron islands. so let's get into it.
to start, the greyjoys themselves are relatively new major lords, having ruled for only 300 years (compared to the starks' alleged thousands of years of kingship). and, as we can intuit from the kingsmoot, the greyjoys do not command unquestioning loyalty from the ironborn. dunstan drumm, gylbert farwynd, and erik ironmaker all put forth their names at the kingsmoot, and some receive a levels of support that is surprising to the greyjoys in attendance, particularly aeron, who has a very skewed perception of balon (and therefore an overly rosy view of balon's legacy).
if it had been asha who was taken as hostage-bride, i honestly don't think any tully-greyjoy or stark-greyjoy children (who would have been ~9 years old MAX at the time of the kingsmoot in canon, assuming asha was forced to have children immediately after the rebellion) would have stood a snowball's chance in hell of inheriting. euron would likely have them killed in some clandestine way, and victarion, should he win, would be pressured to neutralize them in a less kinslay-ey way (though he could potentially take a male child on as heir, given his own lack of progeny).
all of this to say, the greyjoy line of succession is inevitably thorny. in my predominately vibes-based opinion, in the absence of a clear male heir like theon and knowing the ironborn's lack of deference to "green land law", "thea" might be taken over asha. i imagine lords like ned stark or hoster tully would be afraid that an asha match would basically be throwing their grandchildren into the greyjoy succession meat grinder, when asha/"thea" still have so many living and powerful male relatives.
anyway, thank you for coming to my female theon succession and hostage logistics tedtalk, and please tell me how wrong i am in the replies/reblogs 🫡

the Dead Wife/Mother in childbed before the story habit of grrm’s is my least favourite cos it’s just so casually sexist and contradictory to the main novels. wives in asoiaf have SO much agency and influence whether it be cersei and cat, or even background characters like dorna swyft’s effect on kevan, or the stokeworth women. why is jorah’s first wife, jon arryn’s first two wives, lyarra stark, why did they have no effect beyond their ability to procreate? yes, jorah’s can be explained by his own pathology vis a vis lynesse and daenerys, and the fact the arryn’s have no heirs is a plot point, but these are just the first three that popped into my head. there’s SO many. i can understand how male characters dont care to remember women, how women are erased from history, how they aren’t given the same opportunities as men. i understand this is feudalism, this is the HEIGHT of patriarchy. yet why is the unnamed princess of dorne even unnamed? she was the ruler of dorne during robert’s rebellion, the mother of doran, oberyn and elia. she SHOULD be remembered, she SHOULD have more influence than being remembered as a handmaiden to rhaella. it’s ridiculous! it’s laziness! scream!
#asoiaf#it just totally contradicts one of my biggest COMPLIMENTS to grrm's writing - that all characters are humans with agency#that they all have thoughts and motivations and goals. did lyarra have no opinions on rickard's southron ambitions?#no its simply too annoying writing her into the narrative. she needs to die in childbirth before she can effect her children.

What do you think is the difference between lessons given to a royal princess and a daughter of a lord? And for the girls who married second or third sons or cousins, what do you think their day to day duties would be, considering the position of lady of the castle is already filled?
I don’t think there is probably a huge difference in the lesson curricula, myself. It might be the case that some lessons are more locally focused for the daughter of a lord than for the daughter of a royal princess - say, knowing her lord father’s liege lords, bannermen, and nearest neighbors by their sigils and seats, or learning the specific histories and traditions of her birthplace (which a royal princess would not necessarily know). There might also be certain cultural differences between such educational programs: the daughter of a lord who worships the old gods would not necessarily (absent, say, a Seven-worshiping mother, as the Stark children had) learn about the Faith of the Seven, and a Targaryen or Baratheon royal princess would not necessarily learn about the faith of the old gods (or, in the case of Shireen, be taught to worship the Seven as opposed to R’hllor). However, the fundamentals - subjects like reading, writing, arithmetic, High Valyrian, and needlework - would probably all have remained more or less the same.
As far as the wives of second sons go, I think generally speaking these women would follow whatever the career of such a man would be. It’s possible that, like Dorna Swyft, such women would occupy their days by “do[ing] well by their children, dream[ing] of having grandchildren, pray[ing] seven times a day, [and] lov[ing] needlework and flowers”. It’s also possible, however, that these women would act as the ladies of castles held, as Ned foresaw for Bran at the start of AGOT, in the name of their lordly brothers or relations. It’s likewise possible these women might act as companions for their sisters-in-law, as we see Leonette Fossoway doing for Margaery Tyrell in ASOS. Depending on the role of her husband, such a woman might even be performing his duties (albeit in probably an unofficial capacity); Elaena Targaryen and Florence Fossoway were both married to ruling lords, but they might just as easily have been married to second sons named to the position of master of coin, and consequently been expected to serve as unofficial appointees themselves.

Twenty Seven years since the fall of Houses Reyne and Tarbeck, Tywin Lannister discovers that Root and Stem might not have been a correct assessment and out in the free cities a branch remains. Thalia Reyne, granddaughter of Lord Roger the Red Lion finds herself a Silver Lioness surrounded by a Golden Pride, but, after all, a lion still has claws and hers are long and sharp... and Valyrian Steel which might be more helpful. With enemies within and without, an intractable husband who struggles to accept her loyalty or her affections and a trio of good-children who are, quite frankly, a nightmare, she must carve out a place for herself beside her husband and into the histories of Westeros.
Or, basically, The Great Lion of Casterly Rock marries the Last Lioness of Castamere. How will the future of Westeros change now the Lannister Legacy is secure? How will the events of the War of the Five Kings play out with another Lioness in the mix? And just how terrible would it be to be Cersei's Stepmother?

THIS. Kevan Lannister wholeheartedly supports Tywin’s cruelties, he just puts an amiable facade on top. Also, his marriage to Dorna Swyft is dodgy as hell, both due to the age gap and power dynamics.
Who would you say is the least sympathetic POV character? I think Victarion, or if we’re including prologues, then Chett.
Oh yeah, both those PoVs and their "woe is me, my ego was injured so I just had to kill that woman" bullshit is an immediate fuck off from me.
But it's worth examining more generally why Kevan Lannister's not on that list. (Nor grouped with other, similar lists I've seen through the years.) He's been busily setting fire to the Riverlands and he does his own share of "woe is me, I just had to suggest my niece was marched naked through the streets" bullshit. That's some bad stuff. But he's not bricks-for-brains like Victarion is and he's a far more sophisticated PoV than the uneducated Chett. Kevan's self-justification is a lot more eloquent.
Don't underestimate how an educated, intelligent PoV voice can manipulate the reader into thinking that maybe what they're doing isn't that bad, or otherwise result in a reaction that isn't the immediate, visceral fuck off that a lot of people (rightly!) have for Victarion and Chett's violent misogynistic nonsense.
#kevan lannister#is the worst#At least Tywin and Roose and Ramsay and Theon are honest about their cruelty
