Unpopular Opinions On Doraemon #2

shizuka should have ended up with dekisugi, or at least she deserved someone better than nobita. and not because he was a loser and a bad student, but rather because he wasn't very respectful of her and treated her like an object & a trophy to win. my sis wasn't even allowed to have a male friend without nobita losing his mind & becoming a jealous mess. actually, forget relationships & friendships, she can't even play a role unless he's her male counterpart. not to mention all those inappropriate scenes, you know which ones. idk abt u but me personally, i wouldn't see myself marrying a guy who does that to me.

to stay on topic, i don't like how grossed out by the idea of marrying jaiko he is & u know it's not because she's gian's sister, it's because she's ugly to him. he'd rather be with a pretty girl he has nothing in common with. and it's lowkey upsetting cuz there's some cute moments between nobita & jaiko but whatever.

nobita needs to stop inserting himself into suneo, gian & shizuka's business when he wasn't invited in the first place. i'm specifically talking about the space heroes film where those 3 are cosplaying as superheroes they saw on tv & filming themselves, & outta nowhere nobita & doraemon wanna join... there's many other occasions where those 2 pull this shit & it gives off desperate & obsessed everytime. and u know what irritates me the most? that they try to paint suneo as a snobby kid who excludes the poor loser, but the tea is: u can't force ppl to invite u to their activities, especially when it comes to family trips, that's private shit!

no, i'm not done dragging nobita yet, cuz he needs to stop copying suneo's hobbies. and i ain't even talking abt when he wants the same toys as suneo, everyone else wants them too. i'm talking abt when he copies specific hobbies like the fashion designer thing, i've already talked about this in a previous post & it's annoying & once again makes him look boring, obsessed & desperate. specially when suneo does it cuz it's his passion & relies on his knowledge & skills, while nobita only tries to keep up w him & has to rely on doraemon's gadgets cuz he obviously has no idea what he's doing, he's just bitter suneo eats him up everytime.

Personally, I love the dynamic between Jaiko and Gian. The big brother and little sister trope, I think it's adorable. Especially because Gian is every part the overprotective brother we know him to be.

I also love the dynamic between Doraemon and Dorami,, I think I'm just obsessed with sister-brother relationships, particularly because I don't have a single brother. I don't even have male cousins.

@filmfactors has written more about this, but the fact that Shizuka is friends with Gian and Suneo is such a curious part of the character dynamics in Doraemon. Some examples of her friendship moments with either or both of them from the manga:

Something that would be fun to do with the "main character Shizuka" AU would be to dive more deeply into her friendships with characters other than Nobita: Gian, Suneo, Jaiko, Dekisugi, the other girls she hangs out with who don't even get names... is there anything you don't like in Doraemon or think can be improved?

I think that there are some characters that really deserve more screen time. I mean, Dekisugi and Jaiko, we've known of their existence since 1980 (at most), but we barely know anything about them. I really want more content on these two, as well as Dorami and Sewashi.

I also think the time travel should be more clearly explained. In the main story, when Doraemon comes back to the 20th century, he changes the entire timeline. But, in the Peko and the Five Explorers movie, when the kids were travelling back in time, the timeline didn't change at all. They clearly remembered themselves going back in time, and they saw their future selves. It confused me, to be honest.

However, the Latest Doraemon Secret Encyclopedia Volume 1 (最新ドラえもんひみつ百科, 1998) puts her birthday in May, which is accepted by the Definitive Doraemon Encyclopedia (決定版ドラえもん大事典, 2001), the Doraemon Fukayomi Guide (ドラえもん深読みガイド, 2006), and the 2005 anime (which airs Shizuka’s birthday specials in May).

A popular fan theory is that May 2 is Shizuka’s birthday, but this is rarely acknowledged officially.

The manga doesn’t specify Suneo’s birth date, but the Latest Doraemon Secret Encyclopedia puts his birthday in February, which is accepted by the Definitive Doraemon Encyclopedia, the Doraemon Fukayomi Guide, and the 2005 anime (which airs Suneo’s birthday specials in February).

A popular fan theory is that February 29 is Suneo’s birthday, but this is rarely acknowledged officially.

Since the main kids are classmates in the same year and the Japanese school year starts in April, this makes Shizuka the oldest of the kids and Suneo the youngest.

Dorami - December 2, 2114

This date was introduced in supplementary work by Fujiko F. Fujio’s assistant, Yoji Katakura, and has been used officially since.

Also, the Latest Doraemon Secret Encyclopedia puts Dekisugi’s birthday in April and Jaiko‘s in May, but it is unknown if these are still officially accepted.

Doraemon Short Film: Do Your Best! Gian!! (2001)

Now this is an unexpected entry in the Doraemon short film series. Notably, the central characters here are Gian and his younger sister Jaiko, not Nobita and Doraemon. This movie is adapted from the manga chapters "Don't Cry, Jaiko" ("泣くなジャイ子よ", which I hadn't discussed previously) and "Jaiko's New Manga".

The premise of this movie is that Gian suspects that Jaiko likes a boy, so he decides to investigate. It's perhaps not my favorite of the Doraemon short films, but it's still pretty well made, and arguably worth watching for the novel story focus alone. Jaiko otherwise barely appears in the theatrical Doraemon movies, and accordingly the sibling relationship between Gian and Jaiko is not something that is seen very often, especially if one hasn't exhaustively gone through the manga or TV series.

If nothing else, this film is a gift for giving us Shizuka Trying to Sneak Away Behind Her Violin.
