Smashing Pumpkins at CBP Philly 8/9/24

This show was a last minute decision for me. I had been debating it then I found a resell ticket for a field aisle seat for $75 so I took it. SP's did not headline this show, Green Day did and I skipped them altogether . It was definitely worth it to just see SP's.

The live lineup still has James Iha back (a main reason I still go to SPs shows) along with Jimmy Chamberlain on drums. Jack Bates (Hooky's son!) is still playing bass and he's great. There is a new guitarist Kiki Wong. She blew me away. She's so good! Animated and having fun out there. BC is still BC and can't say that I don't enjoy his cranky persona. It just makes it fun when he cracks and is less serious. Also love that his kids come out on stage (this time in an albeit strange wrestling interlude.)

I was really hoping for Mayonaise (my fave song ever that they have been playing at their headling shows) but none for me. Zoo Station is a U2 cover which SPs play louder than U2 ever did! I wasn't there for new songs, definitely only there for my old faves. I love Everlasting Gaze as an opener! Today and Disarm always make me feel some sort of way. Tonight Tonight and 1979 are just pure joy to me. Then ending with Cherub Rock and Zero? This is why I can't quit them!

For not actual jewelry jewelry, I always wear a black ponytail holder that looks like a coil on the left wrist and on my right wrist I have two heart-shaped link glitter jelly bracelets (one is red and one is pink)

There needs to be more appreciation for the album Zeitgeist by The smashing pumpkins. It’s not on Spotify (cry) but there’s playlists of the songs in the album on YouTube music and it’s SO. FUCKING. GOOD. The first song “Doomsday clock” has one of the best drum intros in metal ever in my opinion… it’s so amazing. The entire album is so good please go listen to it 🙏 it needs more attention

for a band that nailed down rock n roll in the mid 2000s so well with the album Zeitgeist, Smashing Pumpkins has absolutely zero swag. negative style. un-drip.

like doomsday clock, bleeding the orchid and tarantula absolutely fuck. but listen to those and then watch the video for tarantula. the video actually makes the song worse. it’s like a group of the least charismatic people you’ve ever seen crowding a low tier mall trying to wear david bowies old outfits.

every choice made for the video is the wrong one. it’s all black and white. oh wait, the lead singer shoots magenta lasers out of his eyes in one spot? he just kind of...stands there most of the time. everyone else is doing some modernized line dance?

this album is so good and it’s been relegated to being available only on youtube as far as i can tell, but that might be related to the bands visual uh......artistry.
