Something that I find amusing is how in TMOD3 book it's stated how, with the protagonists' appearance and behavior, they wanted to avoid "making another mean looking anti-hero".

The audacity to call him "not a badass" I will-

Funnily enough, they seemingly still wanted to have an anti hero in the game, but with another character.

Bit of a wasted potential there....

Anyway, the reason I find this all amusing is because of ROE, specifically, this cunt:

because if y'all paid attention, the protagonist himself acts as an anti hero and I would gladly kill him myself-

Showing no remorse for his teammates he killed (yeah he didn't kill them directly, but he does not show any regrets either), stealing souls from dead people, seems pretty tempted by the artifacts power once he learns more about it (he would've likely became a villain had he given into it).

We should also consider if the inhabitants of the mega-sites consciously managed their ecosystem to avoid large-scale deforestation... once again this book is fantastic - and one of its main theses is that "the agricultural revolution" and some of the conclusions we draw from it are, largely, not true.

the development of farming in human societies is a much much longer and more "playful" process than popular narratives would have us believe. 'agricultural revolution' suggests an on/off switch almost. and the way it's usually taught sees agriculture being "invented" and then spreading like wildfire to take over the globe - only then allowing for true cities and the "necessary evils" they entail. this simply isn't true. an urban, farming society is not automatically doomed to bureaucracy, inequality, and exploitation.

all across the world the archaeological evidence points to the domestication of plants taking literal thousands of years longer than it "ought to." and then, even when the domestication of a wild plant was complete there isn't an immediate rise of huge fields and class stratification (as the popular narrative goes). again - in the magnitude of multiple thousands of years. we have generations upon generations of humans with farming know-how who don't immediately begin a march of politics and inequality precipitated by farming.

agriculture isn't humanity's curse no matter what the memes and capitalists say. we are not doomed to our current ways - we can imagine, we can build, we can create new ways of being. the past is the present is the past. and fuck you capitalism and doomed "human nature" debates. and read the dawn of everything <3

Doc Roe fanfics from FFN

I figured I’d make a post recommending some Gene fics I found on fanfiction.net in case there’s anybody else out there who read all the AO3 ones and wanna read more. I hate using the site to read, so I always use this site to convert fics to epub before I read them.

1. The Whole Nine Yards by ChocAndSnow19 (224,656)

Jessica Prichard starts off as a nurse helping around the aid station in Aldbourne before becoming Easy’s air support. This one is my favorite from FFN. It hasn’t been updated in a few years (EDIT: It has now been updated!), but I recently commented on it and the author responded to me saying she’s going to continue it! If you like it, leave a comment and give this story some love!

2. Dangerous Disguise by A Soldier of My Own (145,088)

Sam Branigan is Easy Company’s nurse. She works alongside Gene throughout the story. Their relationship goes from childhood acquaintances/enemies to strangers to friends to lovers. Something I thought was unique in this story that I’d never seen before was that her and Gene got a weekend pass to visit Paris. The way it ended was so cute because it referenced something that happened at the very beginning of the story when they were kids. This is my second fav from FFN!

3. The Curiosity of Chocolate by violeinne (14,742)

This one is an AU of if Renee survived the church bombing, and her and Gene write letters to each other throughout the rest of the war. It’s a short one but it’s cute!

4. We Lucky Few by HockeyKid6622 (110,990)

This one is about the army experimenting with having female soldiers and Henrietta (Chucky) Griest is the first one. It’s very slow burn and the relationship between her and Gene didn’t feel like the main focus of it. There’s tidbits sprinkled throughout but it’s mainly focused on her experiences as a soldier rather than their relationship. There’s a sequel (40k) that focuses on her and Gene’s life after the war with their kids and it definitely has the most post-war content of any other fic I’ve read, but be warned it has a sad ending. I personally like when fics have a happy ending/end during the midst of a happy moment so you can think about them being happy after you finish rather than it ending with death/epiloguey, so if you’re the same way you might not wanna read the last few chapters of the sequel.

FFN has a lot of Band of Brothers fanfic for every character so if you’ve already read everything AO3 has, I’d recommend searching on there for more. Here’s a link with filters to help you find the best. If the link doesn’t work, just go to the bottom and sort by “follows”, “rating: all”, and choose your favorite character in the characters list. You can even sort by length if you want. Find your fics, bookmark em or download em, and repeat for each of your favorite characters. I don’t recommend using the pairing button because a lot of authors don’t even use it. Sometimes authors don’t even write the relationship in the description so I’ll just click on the fic and skim through one of the last chapters to find out what the relationship is.

It seems the Archvile technically has 2 major unused designs.

Doom 3: Vulgar

Because apparently, this was once meant to be an Arch-vile.

I once said the Arch in D3 had the least interesting redesign because it barely added anything interesting to its design and removed some aspects from the original like the face tubes and proportions.

Almost like a contrast to other D3 redesigns that technically added stuff, even if some people aren't very found of the D3 Imp or Caco.

Meanwhile, this design itself was given to the Vulger in RoE and it's pretty much just an alternate Imp.

Doom 64: The female HR Giger lady

It's probably still up to debate whether or not it'd be a new Arch-vile.

On one hand, Archie was cut from the PS1 port of Doom due to some tech issues (Probably both sprite count and its general role, i think) but on another, we're not sure what kind of role this female demon could've had since the new demons of D64 don't really have a very specific new ability (And for what we know, even the Hellhound and "double" Cybie could've had some simple inclusions gameplay-wise).

I vaguely remember Gregor Punchatz saying it could've been an Arch-vile but it'd have hair, when i think most of us could agree that being bald makes her design interesting.

And a neat observation:

Both designs showcase HR Giger influence where one looks like a Xenomorph from Alien and the other looks like a general take on his aesthetics.

And one more thing:

my main thing with rbg is that like. undeniably she had an incredible and positive impact on our jurisprudence. I really cant overstate the importance of even some of her dissents, where her opinion was not in the majority. that said

1. her jurisprudence is far from perfect. she had an iffy track record on things like incarceration probably in part due to the particular privilege that comes with being a wealthy white woman and it's weird to act like she was perfect and never made any mistakes because like she was a human person

2. the girlbossification of rbg seems to have created a sort of feedback loop that ended in her having an ego so large that she genuinely seemed to think no one could do her job as well as or better than her? which is weird bc Sotomayor was already on the court and already kicking ass but w/e. she literally said in interviews when people asked her about retirement that she didn't think anyone could take her place

3. this absolutely fucked us and if you think it didn't you're fucking kidding yourself. if she had retired, oh I don't know maybe in 2009 when there was a democratic president and democratic Senate supermajority, she would've been promptly replaced by another liberal judge. even if we assume the Republicans would still block Obama from filling Scalia's seat in 2016, that would leave the court at 5-4 in favor of conservatives instead of the 6-3 we have now and w the way the supreme court works that could mean it could have taken DECADES less to claw back to a democratic majority

people who don't know what the fuck they're talking about will look at that and say "well either way it's a conservative majority so it doesn't matter" this argument completely falls apart the second you actually inspect the voting records of these people over the past few terms. there have been many occasions where one or more conservative justices have sided with the liberals. with a 5-4 court MANY of the extremely shitty decisions that have come down recently would've gone the other way

again people who don't know what the fuck they're talking about may say "well roe would've still been overturned" and to that I say how fucking selfish and shortsighted do you have to be to think that just because ONE case would've gone the same way nothing else is important? do you guys have any idea about any of the other cases they've taken in the past few years??? this argument is just so idiotic I can barely even entertain it long enough to respond

okay anyway TL;DR rbg was obviously important and obviously affected great positive change in this country. but she knew when she accepted this job that the entire fucking country was depending on her. she chose not to retire knowing there was a significant chance she could die under a Republican administration and leave us with an extremely fucked up court and she did it anyway out of sheer egoism and that disgusts me! ultimately she doomed us to a court that's going to be impossible to come back from for decades without major reform. she did this knowingly. she knowingly endangered the country out of vanity. and she should absolutely be fucking held accountable for that shit

Hey Leni, let's make theories about Doom and Quake chronology?

I was thinking.. As we know, the demons invaded the UAC in 2145 and the war raged on for some years. Scott Voss from SMC was born in a Martian Colony in the year 2203, that is, relatively shortly after the first demonic invasion. Would Mars have had a peaceful time after all the chaotic events of Doom (to build safe colonies on Mars)? Do you think the other Doom events are part of the same timeline? or that's impossible? (I know there's controversy, but I want to know your opinion).

First of all, thank you so much for the question. 😍 I always wanted to be a part of such conversations so this truly means a lot to me. 😍😍😍Second of all, let me establish 2 pathways: what is possible in "natural" circumstances and what i use for my novel and for future followups as a standalone timeline based possibility.

Normal version:

If we take Doom 3 as a closed title along with all the other games/expansions being connected to it, then its fairly obvious to point out, humanity had the time to recover from such losses. Mars City, Phobos labs etc. were lost to the population measures but not in technology. Hidrocon was still there to bring advancement to a whole new level, and im pretty sure they didnt miss out on it even behind the blood soaked history. Over years and maybe after a few high levels of power struggles within the Board they finally got themselves together enough to restart Mars City as an actual human settlement (with a few added advances to make sure nothing comes over again/wont be as deadly as it can be). This also brought the chance as soon as possible to have the city thrive along with other human colonies which in connection meant a new future for our species. Without Mars city there was no continuation and they knew this all too well: sacrificing decades of hard work over fear and paranoia was too much of a luxury to be committed.

In Quake 4's retrospect, im pretty sure Doom 3's events can be considered as canon, even from line to line (if you mind). My philosophy often comes like this in such cases:, "just because people dont talk about it, doesnt mean its not there". From this point, things can be explained even with multiple altitudes: the UAC has gone bankrupt and the secrets have fallen to the grave alongside with it. Or: people over time got to know about the demonic invasion and they live with the truth. Or: the UAC is still there but under a different alias and thanks to this, they are not standing out publicly. Its only a matter of imagination what you can consider as a direct lead to the main story. And this is just one of the examples out of hundreds you can twist in any way you would like for a perfect fitting.

My version:

In my series, things are nothing but grim. After ROE, Earth got attacked not soon after, and the demons started immediately taking over as much as possible (not just the planet, but other colonies and space stations were in great danger). Even if i consider the heroes winning after the years of a brutal, almost annihilating war, humanity still needs an extraordinary amount of time for rebuilding and even more for restarting colonization. The pace is the most important factor in this, however for me its not unimaginable to have a well functioning martian city in the beginning of the 23rd century. Its almost 50 years to spare so its highly unlikely they will lick their wounds for this long. From this on, Quake 4 can be its own very thing, not even mattering if any importance (like the origin of the Strogg or the demonic invasion) has been altered during an alternative timeline.

Fun fact: i consider all Id Tech 4 based games as one big canon where things have different kinds of impacts on each other. Yes, even Prey 2006. 🥰 The differences always start when one game becomes dominant and begins altering other games/storylines. Everything can happen as it is intended but the questions are rather: how many are there (compared to the original) and how much has been changed to allow a proper existence for something new?

the idea of every Doomguy being together and causing chaos sounds like a fun AU idea. but I've seen you include only 4 of em, and I'm pretty sure that 'arenaguy' is suppost to be Doomguys much younger self, but I could have my lore knowledge wrong. do you intend on maybe adding more of them? like Phobos (character), technically not Doomguy but he's still cool. or John Grim from the movie, or ROE and TLM guy's from Doom 3's expansions, or even Stan from DooM rpg2. not having Joan Dark is fine tho

lol thanks, and yeah I do want to include more. Also the ArenaGuy IS the same person as the Doom Slayer (before the events of the first Doom game happened), but I only found out that later one since before that I thought that he's basically an alternatively ver of him (same way that Doom Marine/Doom3Guy is alt ver of him, but they're still different as people). Now, onto the actual question:

Phobos - tbh, I didn't even knew that he was an actual character and whenever I saw him I just thought that he was recolored ver of Doom (ArenaGuy's name in Quake 3) and that it might've been an inside thing between Quake fans. I do feel bad for him, and his lack of trust and more personality traits make him hard to fit in to the AU, but I could come up with something (sadly, it would prob be on my Insta story since I talk about the AU a lot there, sorry :c). John Grim - Yes I did watch both of the movies (wouldn't recommend but it's not too terrible) and I do like John (he's the only reason I even cared about his-somewhat-bitchy-sister staying alive), but I don't think he deserves the nickname that is "DoomGuy" (at least yet), needs to work on his demon killing. So for now he's an "eh" on whenever I think of adding him. ROEguy - Oh this fucker.... I'm sorry but he fucking sucks: shows no remorse for killing his friends, taking souls because he needs to show down time for a bit, survives only because of the plot armor, seems like an bigger asshole than he shows, and the worst of all, he stole Doom Marine's kill! The only positives I can give about him is that he shows a tinybit more personality than the Doom3Guy, by actually being interested in the Marian history and smiling. However his interest is something I didn't know about until reading about it, and him smiling is either smirking in that one scene (cocky bi-a-ch) or smiling to his friends (because he has friends, while the Marine was new and didn't know anybody). If anyone else likes him that's fine, at least his pants are kinda cool I guess. TLMguy - At least ROEguy HAS a personality and characteristics, this mf doesn't even show his face and I couldn't tell you anything about his character even if you held a rocket launcher in front of my head. Not to mention that you really expect me to believe he made it through all that alone when they and their team got their asses kicked by Imp's 6 hours after the invasion just began (not to mention the ending messing with the "Doom Marine is the only survivor", but I hc that their ship got shot down by demons because they could warn people on earth about Betruger's whole plan). Safe to say, neither of these two are close to even dreaming of being "Doom" Stan Blazkowicz - Sorry but I'm not familiar with Doom RPG yet so I'm unsure, but I am praying that he's a good "DoomGuy". And Joan Dark - She's a bitch and another "strong female character" that shows slightly more emotions than them, but still either bland or an asshole. Sad to say that so far, Crash isn't having another girl join the gang.

notramilopak did these D3/4 skins for InfinityPilot and it made me think of various things related to D3 and skins.

Doom 3 skins

I've seen people want a D3 skin and podium for Eternal and it reminded me of something: RoE's marine also had his own unique armor.

Helmet

Thanks to QC, people portray the D3 helmet differently than it actually was in the game.

Probably because the visor was barely noticeable but i wonder if id in that time expected the visor to be seen differently.

D4 marine design

It seems D4 marine did have a helmet but i recall this concept art where the potential player character looked like a very generic military guy.

Like i said in my "ideal Doom 3 sequel" post, at least leave these designs for "the resistance" and come up with better looking UAC guys to be a bigger focus.

CroTeam's Canned Cain

Speaking of Doom 4, you know the Canned Cain in Serious Sam?

I think everyone heard the story of how CroTeam was going to work on a Doom game and why certain designs in Serious Sam look like something out of Doom.

QC added elements to Doom skins that weren't in any other Doom game.

Imagine if a new Slayer game was made and the Praetor suit had these upgrades from QC.

OKAY so for me most of the time i'll make a specific playlist for the fic in question to get the inspiration vibes going. and like they are quite specific for each fic....c!rainduo have different vibes in rousseau's man than they do in cause most of us are bitter for example. and some songs are just for vibes. and some fics i just fly in blind tbh

i'm alive and reprise - aaron tveit (ok this is another holdover from an older version of the fic!! originally ghostboo was... well, not really intentionally malicious, but his lack of regard for life and death veered more into being actively harmful and dangerous for tubbo. ended up adjusting this aspect because it didn't mesh as well with the tone/themes of rest of the fic, where people care, but tubbo is unable to accept their help. also i got to the end of that fic and went Man giving tubbo a husband who is not only dead but doesn't care if he lives or dies is just too cruel. i can't do that to him LMFAO)
