Fic Writer Interview (thank you @chandelier-s-notebook for the tag my dear!!)
I'll use a cut as well!
How many works do you have on ao3?
On this account, 6! In total its something like 50 I think!
What’s your total word count?
you will probably not believe this but it's 1,021,939. most of it is on different accounts or on anon. i promise you a lot of the early ones are....not really worth reading
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
fire + sound (you guys are freaks ily)
i'd sing you a morning golden and new
Of Shadow
remember me love, when i'm reborn
something for band of brothers from 10 years ago that's anonymous
Do you respond to comments? Why/ why not?
Yes, i try to respond to all of them! it means a lot to me when people take the time to comment, so i try to always take the time to give a response
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
Definitely this one. I used to have a no sad endings policy and this is the first thing i've ever written that's broken that!
What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
if i had words has a pretty happy ending! once the sequel is done it will have a VERY happy ending
Do you write crossovers?
Not in the sense of crossovers with two characters from two different fandoms. i love a good au though!
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
I don't think so. Occasionally I get comments that come off as a little rude, but I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and assume they didn't mean it like that
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
hahahah do i ever!! and now i have friends who enable me so its only getting worse from here im afraid!!!
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
No, i've floated ideas online and had them stolen before but i've never been plagiarized
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! A couple of my older fics. It's one of the biggest compliments imo
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, I cowrote a crack fic a few years ago and i'm gonna be cowriting another soon! we're still in the brainstorm stage right now
What's your all-time favourite ship?
oof ok canonically i think stucky is kind of boring but some of the fics really went off
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
................we will have GTA6 before we get the pacrim au...............
What are your writing strengths?
Hmm probably setting descriptions? i get a lot of compliments for the capri scenes in if i had words. sometimes i write decent smut but i dont consider it to be reliably something im good at, it can be hit or miss
What are your writing weaknesses?
planning, outlining, anything like that. there are many cases of me writing 90% of a fic and then taking a million years to post the final chapter because i'm not quite sure how everything is tied together at the end. usually i write 20%, stop and make an outline and then write the rest, but the outline for the ending is always so vague that it just doesn't really work out and it takes way more brain power than it needs to. i am aware of this. unfortunately i will probably never change.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
this is such a good question okok so it depends a little? say its charles' pov and theyre speaking french. i usually just put it in english but indicate theyre speaking french because the reader knows as much as the pov does. but if someones speaking dutch i usually just say "x said something in dutch" because he doesnt understand it so neither does the reader. sometimes i put the actual dutch if doing it the other way would break the flow of it, but i dont provide translations unless its something that charles would understand
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
band of brothers i think!
What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?
actually i dont know if there are any!! maybe piarles? yukierre? honestly though i'm pretty happy where i am <3
What's your favourite fic you've written?
if i had words is my baby <33 i dont know if i have a favorite out of the two parts though. i love them both in different ways. i maybe have a slight preference for charles', though!

________________ You were working as a bartender in a pub in Belgium for as long as anyone knew. Meaning, you were 'trustworthy,' enough to hear things from collaborators, the resistance, any and everyone that walked into the pub on the corner of an occupied Belgian town.
Aside from the careless prattle and discrete whispers from drunken soldiers, and nameless fighters, you had a keen ear for languages that were not your own, under a name that wasn’t your own, tucked away in a town that was not your own.
In fact, most of the people that stopped by in that pub were far from home, and took a drink or two to get war off their minds.
But not off their tongues.
Now, there was a particular group of men with a penchant for whiskey and beer,  who happened to stumble into that pub one day, just days after parachuting into France.
It had been a year or two since then, and by then, those boys knew what you knew: Hearsay mattered, and it mattered a lot.
So they often hung around your pub in between missions, getting clued in on a lead or two.
But after all that time drifting in and out, something else began to matter.
And to a young yank sergeant named Donny Donowitz, you started to matter.
He couldn't lie to you anymore.
There was something you needed to know.
He stood at the other side of the counter as you dispatched cheap cognac for a brash collaborator who was a regular, and rhye for a Canadian spy, hidden in the lion’s den, who you knew by name. You gave him a double, with a knowing, empathetic nod and smile.
You glanced at a booth in the back of the bar, spotting nine others basterds just like him, wearing stolen uniforms,  and then Donny himself, at the counter, like always.
"Another round of shots, sergeant?" You whispered, knowing they had to keep quiet and stay low there. You couldn’t believe there was not a single basterd that didn’t speak French or Dutch.  Though, you winked, and smiled as you started to line a few glasses up.
"No, Veronique..."
You sighed, you forgot sometimes that they knew you by a name that wasnt yours.
Still it was the only way.
You grinned, "No?"
"Well...yeah, for Aldo, Hirschberg and Wicki. But, what I meant was...uh...There's somethin' I wanted to tell ya."
"Really?" You leaned over the counter, resting your elbows on the granite, and your chin in your hands as you looked up at him, as you mused, "Then tell me."
He nodded and said, "I'm a basterd."
"Darling! Everyone knows that!" You laughed as you poured three drinks.
"No. Not a bastard. One of the basterds." He spoke a little too brashly, too exasperated for someone trying to keep his cover, and his head from being blown off.
It might have been the dumbest thing he’d done. So dumb, it caught you off guard. "Oh?"
"I'm the Bear Jew." He sort of puffed his chest out, with pride, tilted his head up a little, his jaw jutted out, as if he wasn't impressive enough.
But, you shrugged, trying to play it cool as a way to get him to quiet down, for his own good. "Oh yeah?" And poured some drinks out for other waiting patrons. You looked up at him with a gleeful wink, as you slipped into an almost playful whisper,  "And I'm a Soviet spy."
"No but-"
Then, two of the basterds pulled him back.
They'd heard him admit he was basterd, and the Bear Jew, all the way from where they were sitting..of course, he was generally  a loud guy, he was from Boston, for crying out loud, and a basterd no less.
But...they knew he'd say it again to get you to understand it wasn’t a joke. So they dragged him back, along with the drinks, and a quick, clunky “danke” to cover it up.
The night went on, and Donny kept glancing out to you, wherever you were in the bar. He wanted you to realize it wasn't a joke. Not this time.
See, from the first time he spoke to you, he made you laugh.
He liked hearing you laugh, it made him feel as though there was no war. Nearly everything he said to you was a joke, which he was beginning to rethink since you now probalby thought this was also a joke.
A little later in the night, you got to their booth, just before closing time, with another round of shots, and you smirked as you whispered, "On the house, boys."
Aldo smiled, "Veronique, you really know how to take care of us, huh?" He smiled kindly, seeing the glances you and Donny exchanged, so he nudged Donny.
Donny hung back a little as the rest of the basterds and the drunken regulars shuffled out at closing.
"Veronique?"
"Yes?" You smiled a little, but kept wiping down the tables.
"Come on, V." He chuckled as he wrapped his arms around your waist.
You giggled and turned to face him, "Yes, darling?"
He sighed as he looked down. They were going back to France, and he wasn't sure if or when he'd come back. That was war, after all.
You knew what he was goinf to say. You shook your head "No..." You looked away, smiling softly "Don't do this. Not now..."
He couldn’t go another day without saying it.  No matter what you did, you couldn't stop him from saying it. He smirked a little as the words sank into your heart. "I love you."
Tumblr media
Part of you wanted, no...needed him to be joking about that. It would hurt a whole lot more, knowing he knew a whole lot less than he thought. To begin with, he didn't even know your real name... It hurt, because you thought, somehow he'd know. He'd find out, and he'd hate you, because he never knew the real you. So, it took you a moment longer to respond than it should have, but, that was one thing you couldn't lie about to him.
You said something that was, perhaps, too true, "I love you, too."
He looked away for a moment, then back at you. "About what I said earlier, I need you to know wh-"
You shook your head, "Say no more."
"But you don't understand! I-"
You laughed a little, and kissed him.
He was stunned for a moment, but he smiled, looking at you, as you reassured him, "I understand more than you think."
He was unsure what you meant, and he wouldn't ask.
He realized the less you knew about him, maybe the safer you'd be.
So he left, with the rest of the basterds, and marched back through enemy lines.
*************
The basterds were on a mission from the OSS.
"That...is the most security I've ever seen in my goddamn life!" Smitty marveled from the basterds’ perch, behind a grove, watching a mansion, surrounded by nazi guards.
Aldo smirked, "You boys thinkin' what I'm thinkin’?"
"Take em shitbags down." Hirschberg was practically bouncing from excitement.
Wicki nodded, with a slight smirk, "Whatever it takes."
An allied spy ring was compromised, and all captured members were being held and interogated there by nazis.
One by one, the basterds took down each nazi in their way, and made their way through the mansion, securing each missing agent.  Omar, Aldo, and Donny were outside of a room, where they could hear two muffled voices. They were speaking English.
One was marked by a German accent, demanding answers from a beaten, bloodied spy, "WHERE IS HE?!"
Followed by a woman’s voice, shaking through a forced breath, with a distinct accent the basterds recognized. "Wh-who?" Still, it was tinted with a shade of a snicker.
The nazi raged, "THE BASTERD IN THE BAR, WEARING A STOLEN UNIFORM."
"Everyone in that bar is a bastard. Most of them have some uniform or other."
"THE ONE THAT YOU SPOKE WITH."
The basterds heard a blunt thud, followed by a cough, forcing through blood, "I told you. I'm a bar tender. I speak to everyone in that bar."
"You speak English well for a simple bar tender."
"You speak English well for a German."
Donny’s mouth dropped. Only one person could sass like that.
He shook his head in shock, mouthing "Nooo..." it just couldn’t be...
The nazi snickered, as he stepped torward you, "If you dont tell me the truth..." He seemed to hesitate for a moment.
"Yes, Fritz?"
The nazi snapped, hearing you say his name, "You were my friend, Veronique." He grabbed your hair and pulled you to him.
Donny’s heart stopped. It was you.
The nazi swung, his fist bashing against your nose for the millionth time, "Or should I say, Y/n."
"Fritz, please, not in public." You looked up at him grinning through the blood pouring from your  nose, beginning to drip into your lips.
He shook his head, pulling a knife out, pulling your hair up, giving him a clear strike at your throat.
"Of course you know what this means, Y/n..."
"C’est la vie." You shrugged and grinned looking up at him.
"You're not even French! You’re not even Belgian! What....you,” He laughed in disbelief, through years of insult, and deception, “You, liebling, you played me for a fool. You've had a nice run. But....” He sighed, and tsked “You've been such a dear little thing to me... How about I give you one last chance."
"Is that right?" You gathered a breath or two, your eyes slowly moving up, through gushes of blood from your forehead, and pained, swelling from a black eye.
"Tell me where the Bear Jew is, and I’ll let you live."
"No." You knew it was useless. Even if you did live, it would be underground, in a prison, or in a camp. You wouldn’t live for long.  Besides, you loved Donny too much to give him away.
"Well then I'm afraid you’re useless to me, my dear Veronique.” He basically spat at the name. That name was a lie,  he’d whispered state secrets to it for years.   “Then, I'll have to-" His threat was interrupted by a thud, then a sharp, pained gargling, followed by another thud.
"Hm? I'm listening?" You cocked your head to the side, with a slight grin.
He dropped to his knees, his skull bashed open.
You saw Donny standing behind him, his baseball bat in his hand.
He was torn when he saw you covered in your own blood. He kneeled by you, pulling his jacket around you, "Hey, hey Ver..." He didnt know what to call you anymore, but he still knew his heart was still in your hands. "Come on doll, we got you."
He wrapped his jacket around you along with an arm to help you up, "I got you..."
He looked at you, your black, swollen eye, and he gently touched your chin up, trying to see what those animals did to you.
You flinched when he touched your bruised cheekbone, and he couldn’t help but mutter, "What did they do to you..."
You managed to smile. A real one this time as you held his hand,  "Nothing I didn't train for."
"Train for?" He furrowed his brow, "And...why’d that asshole keep callin’ you Y/N?"
"That’s my real name."
"Real name? At.. What are you? Why were they asking..why are you here?"
"I told you, back in the bar. I'm a soviet spy."
"I thought you were joking!"
"Why would I be joking?" You raised your eyebrow and winked with your good eye.
"That! That's why!"
Then you heard a third voice, "Yeah I don’t know kid. Joking’s more of Donny’s thing than yours."
You turned and realized all the basterds were there, with some of the other spies... Some of them didn’t make it...
Aldo sighed and grunted, "Omar, why don’t you keep your fuckin' mouth shut, let em talk." You smiled gratefully as Aldo ushered everyone out.
"W...well what happened at the bar? How-"
You shook your head, "That's not important."
You heard a voice feom the hall just outside, "DID THEY OVERHEAR DONNY TELLING YOU HE WAS THE BEAR JEW?!"
Followed by Aldo grumbling "ULMER."
Donny looked to you and you both laughed.
"So... You're really a Russkie huh?"
"Konechno."  ‘Right.’ You smirked and winked.
"...all this time...but..I... You knew everyrhing about the town, you spoke all the languages. You were...I thought...everyone thought you were fucking Belgian!"
You shrugged, "That’s the point."
He managed to mumble in awe, "Prove it." You rolled your eyes, holding your right hand up to your bloody nose. Completely disarming him, and knocking him to the ground with your left hand, in the blink of an eye. He looked up at you, his lips parted, a gasp of shock, admiration, and....well, two kinds of admiration.
Tumblr media
"Holy shit..." was all he could mumble, as he smirked, and held his hand up to his jaw, moving it side to side to counter a dull pain as a result of that stunt. He pulled himself up, and you smiled a little, your hands wrapping around his suspenders as you looked up at him, "I'm sorry, solnishko." He smirked a little, "That don't sound like Belgian..." You rolled your eyes, "Belgian's not a language, Donny." "I knew that...." He laughed as he wrapped his arms around you.
***** The basterds took you and the rest of the spies to an OSS hideout.
You were sitting on a cot, after a medic set your broken nose, and gave you a pill to get the dull pain to subside. You heard a not-so-subtle not, and looked up to see Donny. Your face flushed, a little shame beginning to rise up, still guilty, feeling as though you'd strung him along to fall in love with someone that didn't exist. "Y/n? What's wrong?" He may not be the brightest basterd...but part of you still wanted him to be your basterd. You sighed, "Nothing," He sat by you, "Hey, no lies." "You've had enough of those, I know. I'm sorry, solnishko." He tilted his head to the side, looked at you, and figured it out. He may not have known a lot, but he knew you. That was dead certain. "Hey... You had to do what you had to do. I get it." "But-" "There are things, Donny...Things you dont' know. It's just so..." "Well, I know your names not Veronique." He winked and chuckled, resting his hand over yours, "And I know you're Russian, but you speak enough French, and German and Dutch to fool anyone... I know you're a spy. One hell of a spy." He winked, and you smiled. "Donny, we can't." You shook your head, breaking your own heart for the millionth time, "You've fallen in love with someone that doesn't exist." "Really?" He held your face up, "Y/n, you seem to be right here. Ya look pretty real, too, ya know." He smiled and spoke softly, for omce, "Yeah, Veronique ain't your real name, but the real you ain't your name." No, he smiled, knowing the real you had that same smile. That smile, he saw between shots of whiskey, and the first crack of dawn for  the past few years. The real you has got the same laugh, and sneaking wink and damning sarcasm that he heard from you a few hours earlier. The real you had the same eyes of indifference as the spy looking up at death, as the  starlit bartender in that old, familiar pub.  He shook his head, "The real you's the same you that said, 'I love you,' aint it?" You raised your eyebrow, slightly smiling as you figured out what the hell he just said...  "Same me, solnishko." He smiled, not knowing what that meant. Not knowing that you called him your sun, because every time the double life in a run down pub, surrounded by enemies seemed the darkest, that little ray of sunshine  (not so secretly known as the Bear Jew) walked in, and lit up your world.
Suddenly, someone popped his head through the doorway, "Agent L/N...that is you, ain't it, kid?" You chuckled, "Yeah, that's me, lieutenant." Aldo smiled, and said, "Well, I done spoke to the general, 'n said, maybe we could use somebody on our side that speaks'um French, since we are in France." "Most of the time," Donny smiled, and Aldo sighed, "Yeah. So, he said, I had a point. Now, I saw some of your work in this here file..." He waved around a yellow folder, stamped with the word 'classified' in four languages. He was definitely going to be chewed out for that. "And goddamn, little lady, I think we could you some'n like this on the team...if that's alright with you." You looked at Donny, and that sliver between the hope of you saying yes, and the fear of you giving in to your guilt. "Yes sir, that's alright with me." Aldo smiled, but before he cold say anything, a higher ranking officer's voice rang down the hall, "LIEUTENANT RAINE!" He looked down at the file and muttered, "Damn..." And quickly, saluted the officer, and disappeared out the door. Donny turned to you, "So the real you's been a basterd all along, huh?" You rolled your eyes, and chuckled,  "I guess so." "I can't believe I didn't figure it out." "Well you're not the..." "What?" You cleared your thraot, "Never mind." He shrugged, and slipped his hands into yours, and said, "You were under my nose, all this time, huh doll?" He planted a soft kiss over the strip of gauze covering your nose, and you melted, as you looked up at him, his dark eyes. He meant it. He meant all of it. He didn't mind, he knew what war as, he knew you had to do what you had to do...and at that point, it had kept both you alive. There was nothing to forgive. There was nothing to be upset about. He knew you all along. He knew you loved him, and he knew he loved you, no matter what langauge was yours, what country you called home, or what you were called. It was you, and it always had been you, who he loved. It was you that gave the basterds a warm place to sit, and a good shot to take the edge off, when they needed it most. It was you who kept his name and his life, safely tucked behind your heart. Basterd or spy, Belgian or Russian, Veronique, or Y/n, it didn't matter. It was you who kept his heart, and he wouldn't have it any other way.

“hi, I’m not from the US” ask set
So I wanted to answer all of these, because why not you know? @dreamsongsims now you can learn more about Belgium ;)
It’s under the read more so I don’t clog up your dashboards.
1. favourite place in your country? Honestly my home. I am living in Antwerp right now with the bf and I honestly love it, even though we aren’t really going outside much right now bc of the virus. I do miss the green and the “not city” smell haha
2. do you prefer spending your holidays in your country or travel abroad? I am okay with both. My family always goes on vacations during holidays, the last few years we’ve gone to Thailand for example but I’m more interested in staying closer to home. I LOVE Norway and want to go on holiday there again but it’s expensive.
3. does your country have access to sea? Yes. 67 kilometers of ugly “badsteden” lol (literally means bathing towns). To be honest I like the coast in the Netherlands better because it isn’t as gray and superficial.
4. favourite dish specific for your country? A nice “frietje van de frituur” (french fries), specifically a “frietje speciaal”, that’s french fries with ketchup, mayo and thinly sliced onion.
5. favourite song in your native language? I hate Belgian music, absolutely despise every Dutch song on the radio. But if I have to pick one its Goud from Bazart, it’s an older song by now but it’s one of the few I did not mind listening to.
6. most hated song in your native language? As soon as I read this I immediately thought of Banaan from Jebroer. Just shudders ugh. But really all Dutch songs in this style.
7. three words from your native language that you like the most? I’m gonna paste my earlier answer here: Hmm that's a hard one for me... Gezellig is a word I've always liked bc it doesn't have a real translation, just like cozy or smt. Another one I like is grassprietjes, meaning blades of grass bc it sounds funny and kinda rolls of the tongue and non dutch people will never be able to properly say that! and a third is eenzaam, meaning lonely. I don't really know why I like that one tbh
8. do you get confused with other nationalities? if so, which ones and by whom? I don’t really remember ever being confused for another nationality. I have read that Dutch sounds like German on crack, and that Belgian Dutch is easier than Netherlands Dutch for foreigners.
9. which of your neighbouring countries would you like to visit most/know best? Visit most: France and Germany, I have been to them both already but never for long and a long time ago. Know best: Probably the Netherlands. We share a language after all so we share some cultural things! (Does Temptation Island count as a cultural thing lol?)
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language? Mmm tough one to answer, because me and my bf are big English speakers so most of our swearing is of the “fuck” variety. I like “godverdomme” (god dammit) and what my dad sometimes says “godverdomme miljaarde nondeju” (there is literally nothing I can do to translate this)
11. favourite native writer/poet? I can’t think of any poets, but I like the writer Valerie Eykmans, specifically the book “Verloren Maandag”
12. what do you think about English translations of your favourite native prose/poem? So I really like “Het Weer” by Hugo Claus, I even have a poster in our living room with the poem in his handwriting.
Weather
How was the weather in the country without you? At first mist fell over the concrete mountains.
Then the sun hung like mist over the mother-of-pearl sand.
Then the sky moved and became clammy as your armpits.
A lightning closed my teeth.
And everywhere the smell rose of the big animals that don't exist
unless in the ringing of your ear, in the rustle of your hair.
That's how it was back there without you. You are the air pressure and the dew and the snow in my skull.
It does not rhyme much in Dutch, it’s more about the rhythm of the words, so as far as the translation goes it’s pretty accurate in it’s contents but the rhythm is definitely off in the translated version
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders? What immediately comes to mind is the whole “Sinterklaas” problem where every year the discourse starts again whether or not the “Zwarte Pieten” are racist. Honestly not gonna comment on that because it’s not my place to feel offended or otherwise about this issue. Another thing that’s a bit more lighthearted is the “jaarmarkt” in our hometown, it’s like a big market that always finds place on the first sunday of the year. There’s a “stoet” (procession) with the walking orchestra, horses, horses and carriages, dogs and a whole load of tractors all going to get blessed at the church where the pastor throws holy water on everyone passing by. I have a love hate relationship with this tradition because it’s always freezing, and the tractors take forever to end. Oh and the main street of our town is completely closed of and there’s a big market with stalls in the street and everyone gets drunk of of the “jenevers” from the Scouts stalls lol.
14. do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV? Not really, the only thing I used to watch was “Helden van Hier: Brandweer” (Heroes from here: fire brigade), it was just following the fire brigade around to fires and what not.
15. a saying, joke, or hermetic meme that only people from your country will get? ah je moe kakken moe je kakken he 😉
16. which stereotype about your country you hate the most and which one you somewhat agree with? Hate: Belgians are small-minded people not interested in anything going on outside of their home. Just not true at all. Sure there are people like that but every country has those. Agree: Belgians are hard to get to know. I hear this one a lot and I can see why people say that.
17. are you interested in your country’s history? Copied from an earlier answer: I am interested in history in general, it was one of my favourite classes in high school. I do like learning about Belgian history, mainly because Belgian history is, in one term, a messy bitch
18. do you speak with a dialect of your native language? Yes, I speak with a “Kempisch” accent, but in general I’m still pretty understandable.
19. do you like your country’s flag and/or emblem? what about the national anthem? I really don’t care about our flag, the Flemish Lion is being overly politicized to exclude the Walons lately and our national anthem is meh, no one can sing it and it’s more of a joke to people my age I think.
20. which sport is The Sport in your country? Soccer (or football idk) and veldrijden (literally field riding, but cyclo-cross as the translation) GO Wout van Aert! (idc abt sports but he’s local to me so)
21. if you could send two things from your country into space, what would they be? I’m not sure if this means you want to get rid of it or if you want to memorialize it? Getting rid of “Manneken Pis” because he’s stupid and memorializing an entire classic “frietkot”
22. what makes you proud about your country? what makes you ashamed? Proud: Our cultural diversity and lately our banding together during the crisis Ashamed: All the racists (looking at you Vlaams Belang)
23. which alcoholic beverage is the favoured one in your country? BEER, ALL THE BEER
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country? Honestly our own nation is most joked about for good reasons. Flemish joke about the Walons and vice versa, and everyone jokes about the joke that is our government.
25. would you like to come from another place, be born in another country? I’m happy where I’m at now, so no.
26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal? I have never seen any prominent representation of Belgian in a Hollywood movie.
27. favourite national celebrity? Probably Tom Waes
28. does your country have a lot of lakes, mountains, rivers? do you have favourites? We dont have much haha, we have rivers, most notably “De Shelde” which runs though Antwerp not too far from my apparment.
29. does your region/city have a beef with another place in your country? Flemish and Walons have always had beef, so yeah.
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family? I had a phase where I was into genealogy and it’s safe to say I’m one of the most Belgian Belgians out there lol, especially on mothers side her family literally has been living in the same place since the 1600′s and my grandparents had never seen the ocean until my parents took them.

Hi! I wanted to join in on the 'event' :p Im a female whose quite tall and skinny, Im from Belgium and thus speak 3 languages (dutch, french and English) I love everything space related. Have ALOT of books related real life murderers, and nordic mythology. Personality wise my friends often tell me I try to find the good in everyone almost to a fault, where Im pretty guillible . I dont have a badass side as I usually do my best to stay away from drama. Would itbe alright to request everyone? tnx♡
You got the whole gang!!
Just a reminder, but the shipping event is nowclosed! Any requests sent in will be deleted.
Also, I used googletranslate for the tiny bit of French used here, so I hope I didn’t fuck it up.Sorry if I did!!
Another Saturday afternoon saw you all inBelch’s big bed, laying together, pressed close. Tonight, you’d go out, cause alittle trouble, you watching your boys, not getting into it yourself.
The thing was, you saw them not as they werebut as they could be. Better, always better. You saw the things they did, sure, but you also saw the best of them. How Henry loved his pigs, how Belch doted onhis cat and car in turn, how Vic loved to dance and Patrick loved to spoil you.
They were better than the bullying. Betterthan yelling out the car windows at near strangers. Better, always better.
“Say something,” Henry said, poking you in theribs.
“Shut up,” you said, smiling.
“No, something in another language,” he said, stretching so he could put his face in your hair, his arm tightening aroundyour middle.
“Tais-toi,” you said, smiling wider.
“Nice,” he said.
And then Patrick started laughing. He’d heardyou say that before; he knew what was up.
You stretched out, reaching over and putting ahand over his mouth. He licked at your hand, and you laughed, pulling your handaway from his mouth and wiping it off on his shirt.
“Dude,” he said. “She just told you to shutthe fuck up.”
Henry scowled as Vic and Belch laughed.
“I did not,”you said.
“Yeah, you did,” Patrick argued.
“I said shutup. Not shut the fuck up,” youshot back.
He laughed, a big thing that shook his wholebody, a sign that he was having a good day.
Henry continued scowling until you rolledover, carefully, so you wouldn’t jostle anyone else more than you had to, andkissed him.
You wound a hand into the long back of hishair, not pulling, just resting. He smiled into the kiss, then pulled back tolook at you.
“Little trouble maker,” he said.
You pecked him on the lips and then pulledback, smiling.
“You love it,” you said.
“Yeah, maybe,” he said.
“You do.”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe,”you echoed.
“Say it again,” he said. “I wanna sound fancywhen I tell Patrick to can it.”
You laughed as you repeated it.
He repeated after you, kind of butchering it.But you figured it was as good as it would be, so you didn’t laugh at him.
Vic tried, and got it in one. You reachedaround Henry to put a hand in his hair, and he followed your hand like a cat, smiling.
Then you sat up and stretched, looking aroundyou, surveying your boys.
“I’m hungry,” you said. “Can we eat?”
“Yeah, baby,” said Belch, sitting up behindyou, wrapping his arms around your stomach. “Think we got enough food around.”
You smiled. Mama Huggins always kept a lot offood around, knowing that you and the boys would be around more often than not.
You climbed off the bed, going around to theedge that Patrick was laying on. You grabbed one of his hands and pulled, getting him to sit up, and then roll off the bed and stand.
As soon as he was standing, he pulled you upto him for a kiss. It was a hungry kiss, the way they always were with him. Yousighed into it.
When the kiss was over, you found that theguys were all standing, waiting on you.
“You done yet?” Henry teased.
“Jealous?” Patrick asked.
“Fuck no,” Henry said. “I got my kiss.”
You smiled, shaking your head. Then you tookboth Henry and Patrick by the hand, pulling them from the room, to the kitchen.
You all ate, bickering and talking and jokingand laughing. From time to time, Henry would pull out the words he’d justlearned from you, making you laugh.
It was times like this that you hoped thiswould never end. That things would always feel like a Saturday afternoon withyour boys.
But Saturday afternoons were always long, soyou enjoyed them as they came.

3,6,7,9,10,23,24,30,36,38,41,46, for the langblr asks-- that's so many i'm sorry you dont have to do them alll have a wonderful day, whenever it arrives~~~~
3. What other languages do you speak and on what levels?
I was basically raised bilingual in Dutch (true Native) and English. I like to think I’d be able to communicate in German pretty decently by now but it’s probably A1 or A2 haha. My Esperanto has faded but if I polished up on it a bit I’d maybe be at A1 level.
(just putting the rest under a cut bc this is pretty long 😂)
6. Do any of your family members or relatives speak a language you don’t?
I know some of my relatives speak Indonesian, and my heritage makes me want to learn it (bless Duolingo having it now), I think my cousin learned some French in school though he hasn’t done anything with it. There’s a possibility that on my dad’s side someone speaks Surinamese or Hindi, but I don’t know for sure yet.
7. If you want any children, do you want to raise them multilingual?
Yesss! I don’t know what languages yet, but definitely English, and of course the language of the country I’ll be living in then (+ the language of my wife if that’s not the same). Whether I’ll have kids we’ll have to see though :p
9. When and why did you start learning the languages you’re learning?
German I started in school, 2011. I hated it but the teacher was really lovely which is why I picked it up again. Esperanto I picked up about a year ago due to an interest in how simple it was said to learn, and that it helped with understanding grammar, which is true!
10. What languages would you like to learn in the future?
Oof, I have a list of all the languages in my about page which I will probably never finish whoops, but the most important ones are definitely Indonesian, Irish, any form of Sign Language, and Surinamese/Hindi if indeed part of my family came from there.
23. What methods and techniques do you use to study languages?
For German I used a course from a school where you can just study yourself at home, and memrise is perfect for vocab for me. For Japanese I used JaSensei which was really useful and helped me learn the hiragana and katakana which I still know to this day! With Icelandic I also used icelandiconline, though the site isn’t of great quality, it throws you right into the deep end which can be good for those who find that a useful way of learning. Other than that I listen to a lot of songs and try to practice in my head whenever I can.
24. Do you prefer to learn languages at school or by yourself?
I used to hate school because of the languages, but now I’m okay with it. I still prefer learning myself but having someone correct you is the most beneficial help you can get imo.
30. What advice would you give someone who is trying to learn a foreign language for the first time?
👏 expand 👏  that👏 vocabulary👏  you’ll never have enough vocabulary, and when learning a language actively for the first time it’ll be harder to pick it up as when you’re learning your native language(s). If the words have grammatical gender, learn them with them as well because it’s easier to learn that it’s “das Buch” then learning “Buch” and later having to figure out that it’s a neutral noun.
36. What is your favourite thing about the country/culture where one of your target languages comes from?
Bread. I love bread, and so do Germans, so it’s a perfect match:’) Not to speak about the actual irl mountains they have :0 My Dutch self loves me those views. Also a slight guilty pleasure but those high ways where you can go as fast as you want? Awesome. There’s nothing like going 210 km/h down a highway with almost no one around except you and your friend.
38. How does your personality change when you speak another language?
Hmm I think in English I’m more open than in Dutch (from what I’ve heard ESL speakers seem to often feel that speaking in English makes it less hard to open up, I tend to agree). I don’t know how I am in German yet due to lack of speaking experience but I felt quite confident while speaking it during summer school.
41. What do you think about the statement “learning languages is cultural appropriation”?
Personally, I don’t agree unless it’s a language that’s part of a culture that wants you to ask to learn it beforehand and/or is closed. Other than that I feel it’s fine though. I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t be allowed to learn Indonesian or any other language, as long as you’re respectful it’s all good in my book:)
46. How do other people react to your language studies?
Most people around me are pretty supportive so I haven’t had many negative reactions yet! I’ve mainly heard people say that it’s impressive I’m putting so much effort into languages because they wouldn’t be able to do that. (which I disagree but that’s a different discussion haha)
Oof I should get back to homework now 😂 Thank you so much for all the questions though! You have a wonderful day as well

11 Question Tag
hey guys,
I was tagged by the wonderful @helenrasing  for the 11 question tag, so here you go ...
Always repost the rules. Answer 11 random questions posted for you. Create 11 new questions and tag 11 people. Let the person who tagged you know that you’ve answered.
I was asked the following questions:
1. Your favourite word ever (language not important)?
I don’t really know ... I mean there are so many nice words how should I pick just one? haha  But here are some words I really like: Desoxyribonukleinsäure (deoxyribonucleic acid); oso  perezoso (sloth); poubelle (trash can) and vivacious.
  2. Why is this your favourite word?
Desoxyribonukleinsäure (deoxyribonucleic acid): With this word my uncle has always teased me and my younger sisters, ‘cause we couldn’t say it as children or teenagers. And it gives incredibly pleasure to make a little fun of my sisters still nowadays and to let them say it three times fast one after the other.
oso  perezoso (sloth): It just sounds cute because it rhymes and the literal translation means lazy bear, which is pretty accurate (and also cute) isn’t it?
poubelle (trash can): I like the connection between nice sound and the meaning. I think poubelle would be a really nice name for a child, but it means trash can, so that’s probably not the best idea, I guess haha
vivacious: I like the word because of its meaning. Like being full of life and good spirits, happy and lively in a way that is attractive.
3. Do you know sign language?
Indeed, I know signs in ASL as well as in DGS. Although I live in Germany and my mother works  with deaf kids, I think I’m actually doing better in ASL.
4. Do you think everybody should know sign language?
I don’t necessarily think, that everybody should know sign language, but I do think, that it is important to make it more “visible” in society. That means that they should talk about deafness and sign language in school for example. And I think every school should give their students the possibility to take lessons in sign language. They could offer a voluntary course after school or offer sign language, for example, as an electoral compulsory subject (in Germany their exist so-called Wahlpflichtfächer).
5. If you had to delete a language from your head, which one would it be?
I don’t want to... I’m proud I can (more or less) speak four languages (sign language not included), but if I really had to I’d probably choose french.
6. Is your family multicultural?
Like if my parents come from different countries? Not really but my dad is from Baden-Württemberg and my mom is a real Berlin woman ;)
7. How did/do your interests influence your learning of a language?
I don’t know if I get this right, but if I learn a language it is often because I like the country (like Spain for example) or because I think the language sounds nice or funny (like Dutch). In school, I had to choose between Latin and French and because I didn’t wanted to learn Latin, I took classes in French. And English is a language you have to speak nowadays.
8. Do you have a languages-to-learn-list?
Not really but I want to deepen my knowledge in sign language (ASL as well as DGS) and I think Dutch, Danish and Swedish are languages, that sound really great, but I probably won’t learn those languages properly. BUT I really enjoy watching movies from Sweden, Denmark or the Netherlands these days.
9. Discuss this list (8)!
There is nothing to discuss ;D
10. Can you sing a song in a language that is not your mother-tongue?
I think as a non native speaker in english it is quite easy to know the lyrics to a song that is not your mother-tongue, but I also know songs in spanish and some songs for children in french (f.e. Frère Jacques).
11. You are founding your own country. What is the official language?
Something simple like english or german, I guess ...
Please @thatturtlething @einefedervonueberzweimillionen @whataboutahappyending @nyledimarco @amandla @grunge-top @girlwithcurves answer the following questions (I don’t have friends here and so I just tagged someone and I also know that @thatturtlething is now tagged twice. You don’t have to do it twice if you dont want to.)
EVERYONE FEEL FREE TO DO IT ;)
1. What is a hidden talent of yours?
2. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
3. What is your favorite Movie and why?
4. Do you think God exists?
5. Where would you like to travel someday?
6. Image you win a million dollars/euros? What would you do with it?
7. Are you a dog or a cat person?
8. What’s your favorite movie quote?
9. Would you rather have fingers als long as arms or arms as long as fingers?
10. What is your most used emoji?
11. What is a guilty pleasure song of yours?
Have fun ;)

this compounds (in probably a kind of 'you and your bars in the stratosphere smh' kinda way tbh but whatever) when youre reading a book from 150 years ago
i read melmoth the wanderer. irish gothic novel from 1820. i read the french translation from 1821. it's about a guy who sold his soul to the devil to...be immortal? not entirely sure if that was the point of the deal tbh he didnt seem happy with it and i never quite figured out what he actually wanted to get out of the deal, the immortality was more of a punishment it seemed
anyway, the guy is immortal. theres a portrait of him from 1646 and he (indirectly)(so, so indirectly)(god why are 19th century novels like this the suspension of disbelief necessary to keep believing in the framing of 'guy telling a story' (guy telling the story of another guy whose story he heard) (guy telling about a guy who heard a story that he heard from another guy he met) (etcetera) was really just a bit too much for me) (anyway) relates his wanderings. so theres these stories a little bit from between mid 17th century to early 19th and we're speaking to an 1820 audience right? the difference between 1640s and 1820s is close enough to the difference between 1820s and 2020s that it was a really interesting stacking of cultural impressions
like at one point the narrator was talking about the 17th century and he was like "people back then couldnt travel as fast as we do now" !!!! that was so exciting to me. looking at the depiction of the 17th century by a 19th century guy with 21st century eyes
it was complicated even more bc the author of this book was irish right (he was like oscar wilde's great uncle or something like that) (this book was super popular) (lots of like references in other stuff) (like the portrait) but most of the story is told by a spanish monk who wrecked his ship on the irish coast so a lot of the story takes place in spain. so hes not just writing about a different time but a different country too. and sometimes you can hear that when it's clunky, same as nowadays, like when they say things like "the way spanish summer nights are" or stuff like that. but most of it will be way more subtle and obviously has completely gone over my head, seeing as i, stewart lee voice, dont know anything about early 19th century irish gothic literature or 17th century spain, OR the kind of perspective that an early 19th century french translator would bring to that story and the influences that would bring PLUS the fact that im not fluent in french and cant tell the difference between 19th century french and modern french (im learning words that the dictionary calls vieilli and vx side by side with modern slang, and honestly side by side with 19th century slang, which is, again, super fun, but not very good for my cultural-temporal intuitions probably) (like when i read 19th century french i keep being struck with how not-old-fashioned it sounds compared to 19th century english or dutch. but i think thats just me. i have no sense for what words we dont use anymore. and the imparfait of the subjunctive doesnt have any oldfashioned ring to me (honestly i like it)) what was i talking about. oh yeah) so i dont really have the ability to differentiate the perspectives here entirely, theres too much all mixed together, but i still get glimpses and it's, master voice: very very interesting :)
the thing im enjoying most about learning a new language is learning new cultural context. i never noticed learning this with english probably bc youre already one foot in american pov before you even speak the language what with all the popular media coming from there, but with french i have to dig this knowledge out with my bare hands and it's really fun
like, when i read in a book that the english people at the english train station our english protagonist who just came home after 15 years exile in france is arriving at "were going about their business with their english sense of timing and rhythm", what am i supposed to understand by that? is that like a swiss clock sort of thing (another cultural reference you now realise you have learnt to understand the right way at some point even without knowing anything necessarily about swiss clocks) or more of a doctor who kind of sense of timing? what is the french cultural idea of the british and their sense of punctuality? i dont know yet! i feel like a child!
#i never got the appeal of old literature but i do now 100%#even though i Struggled through melmoth it was almost 500 pages#and the nesting doll stories oh my GOD#but i read it all and at the end even the sentences that lasted half a page were easy so#worth it#and i read it bc sabrina calvo wrote a book called melmoth furieux which is one of my favourites by her#and i hope no one translates it before i get the chance to#bc i want to translate it SO BAD#but i need to.........moet mezelf nog meer inlezen#dont know how to say that english sor#but im pretty sure it's titled in reference to melmoth the wandering#and honoré de balzac wrote like a parody or satire or sequel thing to melmoth too#like i said it was popular#i havent read that yet bc melmoth took it out of me but it's only a novella so i will get to that#and in melmoth furieux theres also a character called françois villon so i need to get into HIM first#but like this book is soooo fun and exciting#it's like a retelling in a way of the paris commune i think? but we fight disneyland instead of the government#so yeah im also learning about the paris commune. the lyon one too listened to a podcast abt that. exciting exciting#im a history nerd now apparently#like i said 19th century french and me!! we could really have something!!#god im infodumping a month of french this morning#i meant to be finishing my fic but#if doccy whomst can stop getting in the way for a sec!#i should really write all this shit in french to at least get some practice in but then 2 people can read it rip

i was reading your posts about accents and the german ask made me laugh so hard, not in itself (no offense) but because of the comparison to italy (italian here🤗). in italy all media is dubbed too, and i know 3 people maximum who watch movies and tv series in english so even now it's not as common as it is in germany. the difference is that german people speak english correctly while here english (im talking about my experience in high school and university and life, no offense to other italians who read this) is almost unknown, especially for people over 40 but also for many young people. and our accent is hilarious
additional anon: italian anon here. did i write dubbed or subbed? i meant dubbed, sorry im half asleep
Well also remember that german, dutch and even scandi languages derive from germanic or norse languages so they sorta of have a base in place to jump off with english. Italian is a romantic latin base language with a ton of swing in the intonation. I speak spanish and I know quite a few germans who know spanish and the thing that stands out about how they speak it is their pacing. That natural swing in a romantic language seems to be hard to learn for them because the language by nature is very light with a ton of rhythm.
I actually think if germans maybe learned like mexican spanish it would be easier then spain spanish I find mexican spanish a bit flat-er in its delivery not so much bounce. I imagine a german trying to learn italian or like caribbean spanish struggle a shit ton in mimicking that fast pace swing and the reverse. Totally get the over 40's not speaking english but i think this is cultural for example you go to italy, france or spain those countries its a sign of respect to at least attempt to speak the language especially France. Like my god the french get shitty with you when you speak english to them. The spanish and italians will let you try until they are just like "point to what you want". However Germany, NL and all the scandi countries wont even let you finish your 2nd word until they cut you off and just tell you to speak english. I just think some countries lean into english being a default transactional language and other countries dont which is totally fine. Also english is just very different from the principles of a romantic language. I do think tiktok and instagram have made teens all around the world use alot of trendy english slang more and more and get exposed to it too.

Better to see something once than hear about it a thousand times
Day 15: Vietnam – Hue
Today we arrived in Hue (pronounced hoi) where we stayed in a hostel. The hostel was really nice,5 per dorm and we were mixed in with another G adventures group who were finishing their trip in Hanoi, it was nice to get to know them as we’d seen them a couple of times throughout our travels so far. After settling into our hostel and enjoying a bite to eat we headed off on a motorcycle tour of the city/countryside. We were brought to so many different places on the tour from an abandoned water park, a kings tomb, US bomb shelters, an incense making demonstration to a woman making traditional Vietnamese hats with only one hand due to the effects of Agent Orange used in the Vietnam war. I think the motorcycle tour has been my favourite part of this trip so far. Our drivers were racing each other and we got to experience the traffic first hand when we were stopped at a railway crossing, it was absolutely insane🙈. When we were at the water park our tour guide brought us up to the top of the slides and we got to go down them, even if it was just walking it was pretty cool. We then moved on to see the woman who was making the Vietnamese hats one handed, here we saw the  effects that agent Orange had/ still has on people’s lives all over Vietnam. This woman was able to make 3 of the large hats a day on her own. Very impressive I must say. Our next stop was through a pine forest to see the US bomb shelters that were used in the war. These were located on very high ground which gave use a beautiful view of the river and mountains, it was spectacular 😍. The next stop on the tour was to the kings tomb, where the kings remains are meant to be, according to our guide the French came to Vietnam to excavate the tomb and couldn’t find his remains where they are meant to be located. As he was buried with so much gold if anyone were to excavated the whole area and find him they would be sorted for life. Don’t think I didn’t consider it for a minute 😂. The second to last stop on the tour was to an incense making demonstration. Here was saw how a woman made the incense sticks. We then got the opportunity to make our own, unfortunately we didn’t get to keep them 🙈. They smelt amazing. The last stop but by no means least we were brought to a temple just as the sun was setting. The view from the temple was amazing and the temple itself was exquisite, the colours, the lights and all the detail around it. You couldn’t make it up if you tried. Once back at the hotel we headed out for dinner to this lovely family run restaurant where the wife did all the cooking. The food was so good 👌. We then sang a bit of karaoke and got the drinks flowing which led us to what I would call an absolute dive of pub, but they had 2 for 1 vodka and coke how could I say no 😂(Dont worry dad I made sure to get Smirnoff). After a game of pool and probably a few to many vodkas, I somehow managed to find a group of Irish and English sitting outside so I joined their table which meant having a few more drinks, when in Hue and all that jazz!. According to the girls in my group I kept telling them I didn’t want to go home, so when it was time to go they had a mammoth task on their hands 😂. I kept telling them they were shit craic and that we should stay out. Hindsight a great thing because they were right I should’ve gone home a lot earlier if I had maybe I wouldn’t have had to speak to god on the white telephone as they say 😂. The poor girls in my dorm, they were wee stars looking after me even though I was a mess. Thanks gals! 😍. The following day was a day to laze about until our next night train, thankfully👌.
Day 16: Vietnam – Hue
After a big night out the night before I was so glad that today was a free day to do whatever we wanted. Surprisingly I wasn’t too hungover, I wasn’t great when I first woke up but once I had a coffee I was perfect. Some of the group decided to walk to see the citadel but some of us decided against it as it was way to hot to be walking around in the city. I will insert a stolen picture of the citadel below if I can get one 🙈. My day was spent catching up on home and away and of course bake off. Then it was time to make our way to our 3rd  overnight train of the trip. We were told this one would be the like the first train we got which we could live with especially after the nightmare of the last train. The train was clean and there was no sign of cockroaches or mice which was nice 😊. The only complaint the majority of us had was that the air con was way to cold, we didn’t think that was possible. As I kept telling myself I’d rather be too cold than too warm, at least you can layer up if it’s too cold. This train journey was a long 13hours to Hanoi.
Day 17: Vietnam – Halong bay
We survived the ice cube that was the overnight train and made our way to Halong bay via bus. 4 hours later we arrived at our hotel for a quick pit stop before heading off on our junk boat to see Halong Bay. The junk boat was not what I was expecting, it was really nice and had very fancy interior. We got lunch served to us on the boat, which was prawns, crab meat, squid, another fish I don’t know the name of and noodles. Once we’d all finished eating we headed to the roof to take in the view of Halong Bay. It was just breathtakingly beautiful. There are no words to describe it,they wouldn’t do it justice. After cruising round we docked and got to explore one of the many caves in Halong. It too was stunning, there was many rocks in the shape of different animals or people, I think there may have been a few stalagmites and stalactites 😂. It was then time to get back on the boat where we saw the sun setting over the town. I would highly recommend anyone and everyone to visit Halong Bay if they ever have the chance as it is so beautiful. The pictures dont need any captions.
Day 18: Vietnam – Hanoi
We made the 4 hour journey back to Hanoi to spend a couple of days in the city. I’ve decided I do not like cities, give me the countryside any day. We checked in and went for lunch to this amazing bakery 😍. I think it might be one of my favourite places to eat while in Hanoi. For the most part of the day we mainly just chilled before heading out with Sambo for an orientation walk of the city and a little bit of shopping as well. I got a pair of Nikes for 12 yoyos and cons for 6 yoyos, bartering is the way forward. We then headed to get dinner in the old town, where we got to barbeque our own dinner which was pretty cool!. I was a bit scared I might poison myself but I'm still here so all is good!. After dinner we headed out to “the local” for a few drinks to say goodbye to one of the girls who had to leave the tour early. Thankfully it wasn’t a messy one🙈.
Day 19: Vietnam – Hanoi
Today was a free day to explore the city. We walked round the old town again and discovered a few streets and shops that we hadn’t seen the night before. We went on a hunt for an authorised apple store to try get one the girls phone fixed as it decided to have a meltdown earlier in trip. It was a lovely walk until it started bucketing down on the way home 🌧☔, we then decided to squeeze in a the tiniest taxi ever. It was a very funny journey. Once back at the hotel it was time to meet the 5 new arrivals that would be joining our G-Fam. Obviously this meant a night out was on cards to welcome them. We met some lovely Dutch guys that one of the newbies knew from Hoi An.  Surprisingly, I went home quite earlier compared to a few others, even Sambo was surprised I wasn’t hungover the next day. The newbies fit right into our crazy g-fam which was unreal! .

All linguasks.
I’m not convinced anyone ever reads these but thank you so much for all the asks whoever you are?!?
1: What is your native language?
English (bloody glad I havent had to learn it as an adult)2: Have you learnt any other languages? If yes, what are they?
I’m pretty fluent in Spanish and I used to know quite a bit of Danish, but I forgot it so now I’m relearning.3: Have you ever read a book in a foreign language?
Yeah I’ve read a couple in spanish including the first Harry Potter4: Did you learn any languages at school? If yes, what were they?
Yup, just Span5: What is the prettiest language?
Oh my gosh I don’t know too much about that many languages! Not gonna lie, I quite like french and the french accent. I also really love all the scandinavian ones.6: What is the ugliest language?
No language is ugly! I struggle a bit with the aggression of German, but at least it makes it quite unique.7: Have you ever made up your own language?
Not a spoken language, but when I was 10 I made up a quite intricate sign language with my friends so we could communicate across the classroom. I can only remember the sign for toilet at this point.8: What languages do your parents speak?
Lmao, english and some broken french from school. 9: If you were granted a wish that allowed you to instantly be able to speak any language, which would it be?
I’d really like to be able to speak Arabic but I’ve never learnt anything that doesn’t use the latin alphabet so it would be nice to just instantly know it!10: Have you ever tried to learn sign language?
I learnt the alphabet in BSL and I know the basics of ASL since I’m hard of hearing and it can help in crowded areas.11: Have you ever watched a movie with subtitles in a different language, or vice versa?
Oh my god I’ve watched so many movies in Spanish!12: Choose a Scandinavian language you’d like to learn.
I mean, Danish lmao! But besides that Swedish would be nice to learn since then I would understand Ikea better.13. Choose a Slavic (eastern European) language you’d like to learn.
Polish since I think it would come in the most useful14. Choose an Asian language you’d like to learn.
Arabic, or if not that then Chinese since I once started it15. French, Spanish, Greek - which is the best?
How on earth can you compare them?! I’ve got to say Spanish though16. German, Dutch, Italian - which is the best?
Oh my gosh Dutch I love it!17. Have you ever been embarrassed by a native speaker of the language you are trying to learn?
Lmao no not yet (I still get embarrassed talking to natives though).18. Name a dead language that you wish to make a come back.
Okay so I had a long thought about this and despite the fact I once tried to write a whole book using the Old Norse alphabet as a child (yh really, I was that sad.) I’d say Ancient Egyptian. Everyone should use that. Imagine trying to write a resume and just doodling birds and snakes all over the page. Life would be more fun!19. What is your native language / homeland famous for?
Being stupidly difficult to learn (understandable its a stupid language)/ The Queen; tea and bad teeth.20. What language is overrated?
I don’t want to get hate?? I mean for me I’ve never understood the hype of learning Japanese when it’s only spoken by a handful of people really and it has so many alphabets?!21. What language do you think is too intimidating to learn?
For me? Anything language from outside of western europe. I don’t feel like I’d do very well at all!22. What language should more people speak?
Welsh since their word for microwave is popty ping. I mean, who could have a bad day if they had to use that word?23. What language uses the prettiest alphabet?
I love Arabic and Hindi in particular but honestly all of them?24. What language uses the weirdest alphabet?
They all look weird if you can’t understand them lmao! Burmese is kind of bizzare though.25. Try to find some foreign currency in your house. Where is it from?
I have a lot of American Dollars I haven’t changed back! Also I know I have a stack of coins from Europe and some Turkish Lira (dont ask)

Huayna Potosi Summit
12:30am Friday morning. I awaken by the sound of rumaging noises from someone packing a bag in the corner of the hostal room. I try to ignore this but then the faint drone of a phone alarm begins to go off. It was time to get up. By this time I had a little less than one hour of sleep and yet I considered myself lucky just to have this much. Trying to go to sleep at 7pm at high altitude is no easy task. Your heart pumping insatiably, your breathe cannot assume a normal pattern, clamoring for each breathe. at 5130 meters elevation every part of your body is forced to work harder than normal. Sleep is an impossibility for me yet I did manage to get a power nap in. Ten minutes after the lone phone alarm from somewhere in the hostel everyone is out of their beds getting themselves prepared for the next seven hours of climbing straight up 957 meters to the icey summit of Huayna Potosi at 6088 meters elevatio .There are two very different groups sharing this hostel for the night. The first consisting of me the lone Canadian, two Dutch, two French, and a German. All men of very similar age with the same aspiration for the next three days to get outside of our comfort zones and achieve something we all have never done before which was to climb higher than 6000 meters. The other group was about six or so French men and one woman. Our groups never interacted much as the French didnt speak much English and we not much French yet we were all going to the same spot this morning. I was the second or so to get up. I knew I am not the fastest to fully gear up with all boots, harness, gear, etc without forgetting something so I knew I had to get up fast so I could leave ahead of the other groups. I may have been dropped into this group with the other Europeans but for the climb itself this morning it was just Andres my very experienced guide of twelve years and I tied together for the next seven hours as we ascended and descended the summit. We left the hostal at ten after 1:30am into the dark of night with only the three quarter moon to brighten the snowy mountainous landscape around us. I was fully geared out with everything I rented from the Climbing South America agency including a heavy fleece, heavy jacket, snow pants, boots, helmet and crampons - the spikey soles you attach to your boots to tread ice and snow. Then without saying a word to each other we began the climb one slow monotonous step at a time directly up. For the first two, three hours I was running purely on survival instinct mimicking each step of Andres not caring about lack of sleep I just wanted to reach the summit with body intact. Just to back up two days prior. My group of six arrived at the basecamp of Huayna Potosi which sits at 4720 meters elevation on Wednesday morning, being delivered by a shuttle from the tour agency early that morning. First day was for aclimatizing, practising with crampons, along with spontaneous ice wall climbing with ice picks that I had no idea was on the itinerary yet was one of the highlights of the trek. I had no idea ice climbing was so technical but I was able to pick up all the do's and don'ts from the pro Andres like how to properly walk up a steep ice/snow face by walking sideways one leg over the other safely, how to use the ice axe by using it as a walking stick and stabilizer for normal trekking and then using the axe by forcefully sinking the blade into the ice for getting up the more steeper faces. After the crampon practise we began the ice climbing which is no different from rock climbing other than your wielding dual ice axes, and theres no holes or rocks to climb on you just have your crampons to kick into the ice for leverage. I first practised on an easy wall and then the second was a true challenge as it was nearly 90 degress straight up maybe 8 meters high. All six of us made it to the top of the wall but I was the only one who touched the top bolt soo ya take that for what you will. The spirit of competition was felt in the group or maybe I am just projecting. None of us had done any of this before so it was all for fun. The second day was quite boring but necessary. At 9am we walked 410 meters to High Camp which sits at 5130 meters elevation then for the remainder of the day was for rest and aclimatizing for the big climb at 12:30am that night. I climbed the rocks in the area to enjoy the view around camp, read my book, there wasnt a whole lot to do up there. By 5pm we ate dinner and then broke up into your small groups with our guides to discuss the climb then it was on to bed where I tossed and turned all night. Back to the climb. Andres and I were making good time up the mountain. I didnt like how there were so many people doing the climb as we were but I understand how everyone wants to get to the summit for sunrise. It was just annoying how we would end up behind a very slow group and couldnt get around them thus forming a train of other group's. Our pace was good but everytime Andres wanted to take a break I just wanted to keep going. I had zero skill in the art of ice climbing yet something in me wanted to be first on the summit but we had to take breaks for aclimatizing and to to make sure we wouldnt get to the summit before the sun. By the last push for the summit when it was right before our eyes yet still a good distance away by chance we were among the leading three teams to the goal. I wasnt very tired as we were going a slow pace, and I wasnt at all suffering from altitude sickness (I think im impervious). The worst I was feeling was due to the lack of oxygen; never able to keep a straight breathing pattern when I wasnt even tired. The slope to the summit now became very steep and one by one we were treading a very narrow icey ledge with desolation below leading to the top. This is where things got a little sketchy because I was in no way anticipating this. We were all still tied to our guides and I was so thankful it was just me and my guide because if I were to be tied to another I dont think I could trust anyone that much who I just met in two days. I eventually got passed the ledge safely and finally was standing ontop of the 6088 meter high summit of Huayna Potosi. Streaks of orange and yellow beamed from the horizon in front of me. We were the third or probably fourth team up at the summit which was incredibly gratifying. I took a seat at the tip of the summit then looked all around me satisfied. Mountains in every direction with the Royal Range tall and snowy to the left with the lights of La Paz behind me. I then reached into my backpack and grabbed my camera as everyone was to remember this incredible occasion. *It was at this moment when Brett unzipped his camera from its holder, turned it on, and was in complete dismay when the screen read "Please Recharge Batteries". He recalled the camera was at full battery on the first day, and then on the second day it had 2 bara. There was no reason for the battery to be drained. He then looked around with a shaky nervous smile just as the bright red and orange sphere of the sun began to rise and thought "Oh well this is a moment to truelly remember now" and tried to analyse all his surroundings the best he could". Yea that happened. I thought it must have turned on in the case and I didnt know it. Oh well these things happen. There actually is photo evidence as the Dutch and German guys and I took a photo of us on one of their camera, who knows if that will ever show up. When I got back to La Paz I turned on the camera just to see what would happen and what do you know it worked just fine. Turns out it was so cold that night that it temperarily malfunctioned the camera battery leaving me with no photos. Ill take this as the universe telling me to enjoy the moment but all the potential photos were absolutley killing me. I was only on top to enjoy the summit maybe fifteen to twenty minutes than had to go down again because of the many people wanted to enjoy it themselves. The walk down the mountain hurt me far more than the walk up, my knees were in bits when I got back to High Camp around 9am. My experience climbing the snowy and icey mountain to the summit of Huayna Potosi was truelly a unique and very rare experience that I can never forget. It was a much different experience from my Everest basecamp and Kala Pathar summit experience which is a very good thing. The Everest basecamp was a nine day adventure trekking through the foothills of the Himalayas to finally sdand on top of one of its 5500 meter summits. Huayna Potosi was purely mountain climbing with all its technicalities including icey terrain and the use of specialized equipment to reach the highest I have ever been 6088 meters. I hope I can do more like this but for now im in a cafe resting my weery body, drinking coffee. I am resting here for the next few days till Monday and then setting off on the infamous "Death Road" by motorbike. The journey never sleeps.
