"the distortionist" by ghost and pals fits Helen so well

we dont know if once entering the mirror she broke it (mag 047), but if we interpret like she did (which can be seen as a big stretch, i will admit) the song fits almost perfectly: while she is a victim of distortion, the Helen that is left is no longer her, and although she does help the main crew throught seasons 4 and 5, she is not doing that with no ill intent. its all just a facade for her lies. most lyrics can be her telling the archivist her last words, her excuseon why she shouldnt be obliterated by the ceasless watcher.

"In all this madness, it's madness Oh-ho, it's sickening, it's sickening You know it's unfair, it's unfair How you distorted my reflection You know it's too late"

could be her interpretation of what happened to her the second time she was in the corridors and the moment she opens her own door for the first time.

just her first encounter with the corridors.

could be Jon saying his last words to her and the first time this lyric appeares can be how she tells him that he cant do anything in her own domain, and:

could be Jon knowing there are no dire consequences for destroying Helen, which also circles back to how Helen freed Jon from Micheal in her first appearance as the distortion

anyway thank you for reading through my ramblings i just think its really neat whenever songs fit certain characters/situations and had to share. id love to hear if you have anything to add. also i know that you're not really into tma as you were a few months ago and i know you did playlists regarding the fears but i cant seem to find them so i apologise if you added this one already and did an analysis for a possible interpretation but it has not left for a quite a bit now

I agree on almost every point, except for the last one - I would argue that it's in fact still Helen, trying to convince Jon, that it's in her very nature to distort and lie, and that he, or anybody on their level (watchers) can't be mad or judgemental at her for potentially having ill intent (she so does).

Similarly to this she also would use:

Like, only way Jon was able to kill her so fast, was due to her accidentally burping out a genuine lie, that was not in any way distorted or concealed, nor cleverly and nicely folded into paranoia. It could as well be plain truth to him, and the lens that he was looking through.

anyways im... not quite to ep 100 yet? dont remember exactly which ep im on but anyways. i am... so intrigued. i kinda already know all the fear entities because ive seen them about in stuff, cant recall all of them off the top of my head though. umm..... trying really hard to figure out where this goes. i wanted to put down some guesses in this post (don't know if ill actually post it or save to drafts but i digress) but my mind is blank bc it's overrun with the hyperfixation.

Trying to figure out what "protections" the archives have that everyone references whenever it goes to shit. I find it kinda funny that Tim and Martin both went to corridor realm but haven't been reclaimed??? I'm sure theyve left the archives since then and havent been 100% safe but maybe they've both been wary about unfamiliar doors. idk. trying to figure out what the Not!Them are associated with. they seem like they could be with Distortion but my first inclination was Stranger. maybe both??? maybe certain... beings are outside the realm of distinct categories. 5. TV show of the year? hmmmm, which to pick, which to pick. I guess I'll pick The Sandman(thats a close call tho)mostly because of Hob. im not sure why, but its a relatively common theme in stories to show why you dont want immortality, that the world will one day break you, as you watch as one by one everything and everyone youve ever loved crumbles around you. I suppose if I really stretch, I can understand where this came from, but for a kid trying thyre best to find a reason to stay alive, its not really the best lesson. and then seeing Hob say no, fuck it, there will always be beauty in the world to discover, and new, wonderful things to learn, and there is always a reason to live. idk, it meant alot to me.

7. Favorite actor of the year? Mason Alexander Park(desire in sandman), or Vico Ortiz(jim from ofmd). they are both such fun interesting people, and seeing nonbinary characters in shows I love means a lot to me, and since I want to go into some sort of film seeing them succeed is really encouraging

Something that made you cry this year? other than the ever present crushing weight of being alive? podcasts. in a genral note, I have cried soooo many times listening to wtnv, tma, and malevolent, but the most interest time was when I went to the wtnv live show in Boston this past summer. I started crying before the show even started. It was my first time to a big city, and I was already exited to see so many different people. as people started to file into the theater I started to notice that I felt safe. I was on my own, but I didnt feel lonely. and maybe it seems a stupid thing to cry about, but everyone in that theater was brought together by a common love, and that love was apparent. everyone was different, each dressed in their own unique way, and yet no one was out of place, including me. As someone whos always been at least a little out of place and lonely, that night meant a lot to me, and i started silently crying as the lights dimmed.

Anyway, uh, connections! This episode has ✨ spooky voices ✨ saying Vigilo Audio Operior, which is Latin for “I watch. I listen. I wait.” This is similar to the Magnus Institute’s motto (Audio Operior Vigilo), but also to the MAG 160 description, Vigilo Audio Supervenio.

Google translate says this means “I watch. I hear. I come,” however the wiki says it means “I watch. I hear. I come.” According to wikidictionary, Supervenio can mean “I overtake” or “I come on” as well as “I surpass,” “I exceed,” and “I excel”

So, uh, what are the creepy voices? Probably web or eye related. Since “I watch, I listen, I wait” is, yknow, spooky in an eye way. But, “I wait,” and having the tapes be web, and then the call back in MAG 160 when a lot of the Web’s plans (and Jonah Magnus’, the bastard’s) come together.

And also on a meta level, like, the joke that RQ is web aligned and the implication that the tapes made it to our world (bringing with it the fears) and the crew retrospective… I think it’s gotta be Web, doing the spooky voices and putting it in the description.

Does that mean the Web they/themmed jon? Diversity win, i guess.

okay ive gotten a few of these so i will Try To Type Out Some Ideas, which are going to be under a cut cause theres a lot

starts in 2000, but its sort of a fusion between them being aged down fifteen years and the timeline starting way earlier, SO

2000-most of season 1 (jon-13, martin/sasha/tim-14, georgie/melanie-15, basira-17, daisy/gerry19)

2001-most of season 2 (jon-14, martin/sasha/tim-15, etc)

2002-most of season 3 (jon-15, martin/sasha/tim-16, etc) --> jon hits his growth spurt over the summer because thats literally the funniest shit.

2003-most of season 4 (jon-16, martin/sasha/tim-17, etc)

gertrude and jons grandmother are both still alive, as well as gerry and maybe some other characters

in terms of vibe - jon definitely is becoming a monster, and theres still trauma and the fears and no love entities, but i think the stakes being as high as they are and them being kids means that. the punishments for fucking up (in order to maintain the pjo/artemis fowl vibe) are like. kind of lower? but not much? i just feel bad about being like. yeah tim fully explodes when he’s 17 lmfao but then i remember that ethan nakamura fully fell off the empire state building so! it be like that i guess for them

in terms of how everything happens. tl;dr - jon is five years out from mr spider, and in my mind he would be like absolutely fixated on it. 

some changes to canon, maybe elias figures gertrude out way earlier, actually looks into her head, and is like fuck me i gotta get a new archivist. and then he runs into jon somehow and is like Oh A Gift From The Web (like an idiot) and is like :) hey kid would you like to know more about mr spider and jon is like uh yeah of course?

and then he starts sending (feeding) jon statements that implicate gertrude as a compatriot of leitner’s. so jon believes gertrude to be like the bbg wrongly.

maybe theres a confrontation!!! maybe gertrude seriously contemplates just Getting Rid Of This Kid!!! Who Knows!!!!

obviously im doing a lot of timeline shifting and bending just to make this all work bc. i do what i want. also they’re all in london bc. i do what i want.

i think everyone is friends. maybe people get mad at jon but like. he’s not their boss man, he’s just a kid. so yeah tim gets a bit mad but they’re still friends.

daisy is still a hunter but she and basira aren’t cops. daisy is the oldest at 19 (other than 30-40yo elias, 50ishyo gertrude, and jons teta), gerry a close second also at 19, and basira is 17. daisy maybe has some weird vigilante monster hunting thing kind of like canon, maybe she still tries to Get Jon, but after the buried (do i really wanna make 16yo jon go into the buried. Yeah) they have like a very sibling like relationship!!! ;;

georgie isnt jons ex but they ARE childhood friends maybe jon had little a crush on him :’0

"will your system be all right" is the winner by far with 91 kudos, while "Perhaps I Had A Wicked Childhood," "Steadfast In the Broken Binding," "the devil gave me a crooked start," and "I Am Not the Only Traveler" are roughly the same (35-25). which is kind of surprising to me, because "system" is a non-ship character study for a very minor character, but then the others are for tiny fandoms or rarepairs or BOTH so i guess "system" is the only one that had a chance in general

this is very hard to narrow down unless it means "favorite ship to write," in which case that's almost definitely steveloki! they are the perfect blend of "it's not like pulling teeth to get them to communicate in-character" and "they clash enough that it's fun to write the dialogue" (my reoccurring problems with jonmichael and richason respectively). and i really like where i've gotten wrt writing in their voices. they're just very fun to put in situations.

14) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

at this point "Broken Binding" feels like a lost cause but i haven't given up on it yet, especially since i have a vague ending in mind. it's just that i ended the last chapter in the smack middle of my burnout and it still gives me a stomachache thinking about being in that particular headspace. there's another jonmichael one-shot i'm working on that i doubt i'll finish just bc of how weird and self-indulgent it is and how embarrassed i would end up being if i posted it.

15) What are your writing strengths?

i love dialogue so much. and body language. i'm a pretty visual person so i think i can write with good specificity, because i need to visualize everything in my mind before i can write it.

16) What are your writing weaknesses?

pacing, emotional authenticity, being impatient to get to what i want to write so bridge sections are weak and/or rushed, tendency to over-describe, can't write kissing/romantic scenes, either over- or under-emotionalize during denouements/climaxes, as much as i like dialogue mine can be pretty cringey..... it goes on but there's that

17) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?

i will not do it until i have minored in the target language for at least four calendar years and maybe lived in the area for a year minimum

i think "system" is probably the most holistic product - it's not fantastically written but it's solid and it does what i wanted it to do, i have a lot of affection for it as both a good fic and the fic that got me writing in fandoms larger than aio - but "Perhaps I Had a Wicked Childhood" is the biggest swing i've ever made, stylistically and narratively and structurally and emotionally, and while there are some scenes that still make me want to stab my eyes out for posting publicly, i just..................it's definitely that one. it's the opposite of perfect but it's so much fun.

okay i feel like my movie taste really does come down to what did i see in theaters that made me define my personality around them for the rest of the week, and i usually have Allergic to Watching Old Movies Disease so most of these are p recent! my movie taste is Also defined by what i saw enough on tumblr that eventually i broke down and watched it and it was actually amazing lol

Jennifer’s Body: THEE movie of all time, it literally has anything i could ever want in a movie: excessively campy dialogue, a plot around making a deal with the devil, a town that’s slightly fucked up, extended metaphors about gender violence but in a palatable PG-13 non-graphic format, Megan Fox going feral and eating boys, a homoerotic friendship where they also kinda hate each other but its mostly bc neither of them can deal with their feelings in the world they were brought up in, and a soundtrack that slaps. Seriously i could probably quote this movie word for word at this point, and like technically its horror but its also really funny and theres not really any jumpscares or anything. Im gonna stop talking about this one bc if i keep going i could write a whole essay but its so good (also i wont elaborate but Jennifers Body and Heathers are sisters, spiritually)

Us: hhhhhhhh this is so good, ik Jordan Peele’s only directed two movies so far but he never misses, like this was genuinely terrifying for me but also raises a lot of Questions and made me think about the implications of it for weeks afterward. It’s about this family vacationing in Santa Cruz, CA at the same time that there’s this planned uprising of doppelgängers all around the US (i cant remember if its the world or just the US? But it makes a lot of commentary about the US in particular so im guessing its just the US). I’ve still only seen it once but the aesthetics are so good, its definitely more on the violent side than Get Out was, but its not too bad (like idk if you’ve seen Midsommar but like. its nowhere near as gory as that lol). I swear i didnt have a fear of doppelgängers before this but between this and tma i sure do now

It (chapter 1): this one is so close to my heart omg 🥺 i associate it super strongly with watching it with friends so thats at least half the reason its a favorite. Also i love horror-comedies so much as a genre, mostly bc i scare easily so its nice to have jokes in between to break the tension and this movie’s hilarious

Cabin in the Woods: i cant say what this one’s about without spoiling it but i’ll say it definitely goes under the same category as It for me, in terms of horror-comedy. Its such a fun deconstruction of horror movie tropes and it gets so insane at the end, like when you watch it you can *tell* it was made in 2011 but like in a good way

Also honorable mention to The Love Witch for sending me into a spiral about what truly is the female gaze/if there can be one definition of that/the relationship between love and violence etc etc basically it’s Extremely Gender. Also not v bloody and doesnt have any jumpscares, and its an aesthetic masterpiece omg

Juno: i dont normally have favorite actors but Elliot Page is my emotional support favorite actor, like idk how to explain it but all of his characters just scream comfort character somehow. Juno has the same screenwriter as Jennifer’s Body so it has a really similar sense of humor, but altogether v wholesome plot about a pregnant teenager and her bff, michael cera. Also highly quotable, and i dont think ive ever watched this without crying, like this is one of those movies where im like love is real actually 🥺💕

Easy A: this movieee!!! Oh my god this movie, its so intensely californian and thats def part of why i like it. Also realizing now a major factor in movies i like is how quotable they are bc this is another one i feel like i quote all the time. Plus theres something so fun about baby Emma Stone living her 80s movie protagonist dream AND doing the “you think i’m a villain? I’ll show you a villain!” trope bc thats always fun

All of twilight but especially the first one: i mean idk what to say, i got brainworms when i was 11 and made twilight my whole personality for like 3 years, then grew out of it, then the twilight renaissance happened and im Back on My Bullshit 😂 i also just like having a purpose for me memorizing everything possible about twilight in middle school so like.... if you ever want any fun twilight facts hit me up (this goes to AR but if you’re not AR and reading this too this also applies lmao im down to talk about twilight any time)

Sure we got bill hader being in love with his childhood best friend which spawned the whole Reddie craze on here for awhile..... but that came at the price of naked old ladies being used for shock value and whatever the hell was going on with Pennywise being an alien/god/something??? dfgdfg i have..... a petermart story that dealt with the different flavor of loneliness they both had, half smut half genuine meta of both of them and theorization on the branching of an Entity & how their powers manifested in other people...

basically, peter thinks hes hot shit when it comes to loneliness but gets overwhelmed when martin accidentally projects his feelings abt *fic's plot stuff* on him, its fun stuff!

listen, listen, i know it sounds like im woobifying her i Know it but reading the scraps of her story how can i Not feel sorry for her? when the story framed her very similar to jon? the supernatural childhood encounter that gave them arachnophobia and the subsequential joining with an Entity against her will? the fact that both the story and the fans treat her like a spider woman always sat very very bad to me, and the fact that the story itself always framed her like a villain (considering All The Other Characters that get the benefit of the doubt) was extremely disappointing

A random headcanon: Love the headcanon that she can be Mean. I know nothing about TMA but I’m a gossip pls release the rant if you’d like 👀

firstly id like to say this ask is a christmas gift in itself, i LOVE an excuse to rant about tma. this is gonna be long tho so lets head under the cut

tma is a podcast produced by rusty quill which really means that it started with a few white guys, and as such, the voice cast is almost completely white and its one of those media with “aracial” characters. however, they’re clearly written as white bc, well, there wasnt any effort to do otherwise. so this is the beginning of many problems.

the biggest instance of racism is with a family of avatars of the flesh - a horror power involving flesh/meat. the family is chinese, and sells ppl human meat in their chinese restaurant. this is extremely and overtly racist, and back then they didnt have any sensitivity readers or common sense i guess, so they just. did that. one of the episodes involving them had a “horror” element in which one of the characters speaks in english. this is supposed to be scary bc “how could a chinese person know english??” in order to avoid addressing this, in a later episode the characters only refer to them vaguely without names. this issue was unaddressed for YEARS before an apology was given, only for them to do what? more racist shit.

two of the main characters in tma are cops and as such are a heavy-handed metaphor for police brutality. one of them, daisy, commits violent atrocities bc she is an avatar of another power called “the hunt”. she basically just kills whoever the police tell her to. her cop partner, basira, excuses her actions bc “they were criminals”. its clear that these characters are supposed to be bad but then things get weird - theres an entire arc about whether its morally correct to kill daisy. bc she has a little redemption arc. unfortunately, if ur a cop, u dont deserve a redemption arc. so theres this big thing about “well shes a better person now” etc coming from all of the characters, not just her partner. it really waters down the message imo.

so, what do you do when you write a horror podcast with themes about capitalism and police brutality? you write an episode about a white person going to prison and experiencing police brutality. i cant even begin to express how inappropriate that is - especially since its a lazy attempt at horror. their excuse was “well, 2020 is unprecedented”. uh, cops have been committing police brutality since their invention. the blm movement started in 2013 - no excuse for saying ‘we wrote the eps in advance and theyre just hitting close to home”. 

and, tbh, it could have been written well but it just wasnt? and then there was a high profile police brutality case in the us so they delayed release until the next week - bc police brutality only happens once in a while, right? imo it wasnt the episode itself that was the most offensive, it was the idea that black ppl are only murdered by cops every once in a while and its just a topical issue, not something that happens every day.

i started off with the racism bc i think thats tma’s biggest problem, but the thing about it is this: tma is well written. or it was, up until season 5. but when season 5 started airing it was bad. it was really bad. it throws away the entire formula that it used for the first 4 seasons, has a couple that constantly argue and try to undermine each other, the main character has suddenly flipped into full murder mode so that each week they just kill off another character. it became extremely bland, the horror which was generally surreal - random doors appearing, uncanny valley creatures, skies that never ended - into everyday horror. it was a huge tonal shift and now instead of hearing about an endless neighborhood with no people, it became “capitalism sucks. the government sucks. the police suck.” over and over again which, while true, does not a good horror podcast make.

the point of this is: when you look at how bad season 5 is, you realize how bad the rest of it is as well. it doesnt hold up under its own writing. little details that could be ignored, or even huge problems like the continual racism suddenly became glaring issues. not to mention character arcs which had developed slowly suddenly took huge turns in s5 out of nowhere. 

the worst example (which i stopped listening so ive only heard this second hand) is a character who was a spooky woman who had a weird door that made u crazy, turns out to be politcally conservative the whole time. and she was about how, like, you think you know ppl, and then theyre conservative. or something. just, really bad political analysis. 

id also like to point out that in the prison episode in s5 which is a culmination of the “police are evil and bad” theme ends with the characters talking about how this one guy deserves to be in prison. liberalism at its finest here. 

there are a lot of narrative issues in tma but it really boils down to this: we excused a shitload of racism bc there was good writing. and now theres no good writing. also jonny sims singlehandedly created the most annoying gay characters to ever exist.

i dont think that jonny is a bad guy but he is woefully inequipped to deal with the big real world problems and themes he built on. its sad, tbh, bc its something that COULD have been really amazing. 

he tweeted once that the s5 finale would be a “chocolate torte of tragedy” where i assume hes going to kill off either one or both of the gay characters, but the real chocolate torte was the way he ruined his own podcast.

tldr; tma’s writing built up to something it couldnt actually do. and that made the whole thing collapse. also its really, really racist.

i want to cosplay tma but i haven't done much of it before and yours are incredible, could you suggest amy characters thatd be pretty easy to pull off?

OK THIS GOT A LITTLE RAMBLY BE WARNED BUT IM Trying my best with this very limited information and delightfully open ended question

well the really excellent part about cosplaying from podcasts is that most of the time the characters don’t have one “canon” design and are completely open to interpretation, which gives you a ton of wiggle room because the decision can be based less on “which of these canon designs do i think id suit best” and more on “which one of these concepts do i think id have the most fun trying to design and execute?” (which is the line of thinking that led me to start working on my jane cosplay, actually!) personally when i cosplay from podcasts the main goal that i’m shooting for wrt the finished product is recognizability since i’ll freely admit that there’s almost nothing like the dopamine release/validation of someone recognizing ur cosplay at a con, especially if they ask for a pic. so my advice is probably generally gonna be oriented towards how to make whatever costume u pick recognizable in hopefully the simplest and clearest way possible.

with tma obviously the human (or mostly human lol) characters are gonna be the easiest to tackle, both because they’re easier to nail down design concepts for (since they’re not the personifications of abstract concepts lol) and also because in tma the monsters/more monstrous characters tend to get pretty detailed descriptions as opposed to the humans who get virtually none.

for me personally, if i was going to start putting together a cosplay of one of the archival staff Right Now starting with things i have in my closet/room, i’d probably either go for daisy or melanie for two reasons. the first is that both in terms of what i look like and what clothes + materials i have lying around, i am (or could use said materials to make myself be) aesthetically closest to looking like my headcanons for them (wow i hope that made sense this is a weird concept to try to figure out how to word when you HAVE slept and AREN’T high so i’m Really struggling)

the second reason is that those are the two i think i (again given what clothes and materials i have on hand) could most easily make myself recognizable as.

aaaand i guess where id go from there is to think about my designs/personal headcanons for these characters. i’ve been trying to sketch my headcanons lately so they’re a little more solid in my mind than they would usually be.

here are the essential components that make a recognizable daisy when i see her in my head:

-short

-large jacket

-too-big clothing in general

-on that note, utilitarian/practical clothing

-boots

-occasionally i like to picture her wearing a shirt with a sign like one of those dog vests that says DONT PET I BITE

-i usually also picture her with some kind of facial scar or something, which as far as i can tell is pretty common in fanart as well

here are the essential components of melanie as she appears in my head:

-also short (tho not AS short, imo)

-mad as hell

-bangs

-messy (in a cool way) eyeliner

-big jacket/hoodie/sweatshirt

-dark lipstick

-ripped jeans/shorts and tights

-ghost hunt uk and/or what the ghost merch

-knife motif somehow incorporated (melanie voice whats uo with this knife motif do you have something against kniiiiiiiives)

-depending which part of the show chronologically ur pulling insp from, sunglasses/an eye bandage/scars/white pupils/etc something like that you get the picture

SO then i go through those lists/review whatever little preliminary sketch ive just done and pull out a second, shorter list which is “things from the first list that i could feasibly make happen using materials that i have or can easily obtain”

so for daisy that would be

-large jacket: i have a way-too-big army jacket i thrifted a while back

-too-big + utilitarian clothing: i have a huge pair of cargo pants and a sweater that have been waiting for this moment

-boots: i got em

-scar/s: i have latex, tissue, and a makeup kit; i can make this happen quickly and easily

and for melanie we’d have

-mad as hell: i can certainly make some faces! draw my eyebrows in a little angrier maybe even!

-bangs: recent development but i have em!

-messy eyeliner: doable

-big jacket: got plenty

-dark lipstick: got plenty x2

-ripped jeans/shorts over tights: happily, this is an essential part of my wardrobe as well as melanie’s

-knife motif: there are certainly subtler and perhaps more elegant ways to go about this but if i wanted to get in cosplay and leave the house in the next like hour.... well.... i mean we do have just like, knives! DISCLAIMER while real knives can be fun and cool for photos don’t take real knives to conventions

anyway yeah so given that i would then basically... gather the pieces needed to check off each item on the list and then get ready and hope for the best lmao.
