Gwayne Hightower knew, without a doubt, that House Graves was the crucial key to his father, the Hand, being able to obtain for Aegon II the maximum military support he could for the imminent war that would follow.
House Graves had good men, born and raised in Oldtown, who would fight to the end for their purpose. And the twenty thousand men had the purpose of obeying the commands of the Lord Graves, and the old Lord Graves, in turn, had the purpose of not bowing to House Hightower, not even in Oldtown.
Gwayne Hightower also knew that Lady Y/N Graves, the Lord's young daughter, was not malleable as her father had once been, when he still sipped fine wines at Viserys I's table, when they both still breathed. No, the girl—woman, he corrected himself mentally—was firm and loyal to the oath of her house: Rhaenyra was the rightful queen. Period.
However, Gwayne Hightower knew even more: that his heart burned at the sound of the woman's laughter when she was surrounded by other ladies of the court, that his senses were confused when, as he passed by her, the breeze blew and with it, carried to his nostrils the characteristic scent of Y/N's hair. Musk, honey, lemon.
His hands trembled when young knights and lords approached the woman.
On the outside, to everyone, he couldn't stand her. It had been like that since 111 AC when he had participated in the damned tournament and had been struck down by none other than Damon Targaryen. Oh, he remembered the look in her eyes when he woke up from his faint, covered in mud.
"My lord, are you alright? Can you hear me?"
He didn't like looks like the ones she gave him. Looks he had felt during his mother's death. Of pity. He hated them. He felt angry at himself. Not her, of course.
He remembered how the young lady's brother had mocked the name of House Hightower and that Gwayne would not be fit for the Guard.
But later, he also laughed to himself, remembering how months after the tournament, she had looked at him in Oldtown, during the hour of the wolf, when they had both undressed by the river, silent in their words and with shallow breaths. He took her for himself, as he had never done before with anyone else and knew that he would never get over that night. A secret between the two of them, just once and Gwayne would never even think about interacting with her again — the young lady's words, after all the indecencies and vulgarities they had done.
No, Otto Hightower would kill him if he ever knew what he had done with the girl from House Graves. A betrayal!
But Otto Hightower liked to be on top in every situation, he would take everything for himself, no matter the consequences of his actions, meticulously manipulated and done with discretion, despite the great results.
So he sent his son to ride to the castle of House Graves, with a decree signed by Aegon II: a marriage between the Knight, Gwayne of House Hightower and Lady Y/N of House Graves.
Y/N's brother, unlike his sister and father, could not stand child killers, as he had decided to call Rhaenyra, the Cruel. This highly ridiculous assumption infuriated Y/N. Lord Graves then responded to the decree and freely offered his sister's hand to Lord Gwayne.

So, this 'thing' was in my drafts... I never finished. I originaly wrote in portuguese in my notes app, so English is not my first language. Sorry for any errors. I hope you like it. I wanted to write some kind of marriage of convenience between the reader and Gwayne — I love you, Freddie — and wanted to make them have some tension, especially because of the war, but when you're writing, you make something that is for yourself, so you can change some facts, some things that happen in the books or series... anyway, just me rambling nonsense. I think I will never finish this, so take what you can get of my poorly work hahahah
Thank you :)
