So to start. I am also Asian. Specifically Chinese American.

As an American born Chinese, I have a weird relationship with my Asian heritage. I have a bad accent when I speak Chinese and most of my upbringing and cultural understanding is very American and western-centric. So I have certain biases at play here that I fully acknowledge. My experience is not universal. But these characters are drawn from that experience.

Huang Feng is a reference to Bruce Lee's performance as Kato in the Green Hornet. Dà Huángfēng being a Chinese term for a hornet.

The character is also narratively implied to be a secret moonlighting identity for the Yellow Ranger in my made-up sentai team. (Who, due to my own decision to always refer to the characters by their Ranger color, is literally just called Yellow by the other members of the cast.)

This is also a reference. Specifically to one of my greatest inspirations, Thuy Trang (Rest in Peace), who played the original Mighty Morphin Yellow Ranger. She was one of the first "Cool Asian Characters" that I encountered in media targeted at me as a child, problematic color choice aside. I sincerely adored her and her giant robot Saber-Toothed Tiger.

To be honest I have a complicated relationship with "Asian Themed" characters in media. So often saddled with cliché stereotypes: Martial Arts, dumplings, nunchucks, etc etc.

But the thing is, even as I roll my eyes whenever I see the Fighting Game character that is The Chinese One who wears a rice hat and a qipao. Or when one is literally just Bruce Lee. I do also immediately main that character. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure. Taking what representation I can get with mixed feelings. What I don't make clear outside of the vetted and trusted people I speak to daily, is I usually send messages to the person I'm talking about in hopes to advise that something was not hitting. I’ve blocked a couple ppl whenever I feel like my point was dismissed because I don’t got the time baby

This is an ask my mutual @kyletogaz got after expressing frustration about the situation/lack of apology and so is this and this. This is the post my friend/mutual kiko made that I reblogged and essentially got the ball rolling on the current convo about how Mace/black characters are depicted in fiction. Kiko has been one of the few other poc people providing links and information on what the issue is with the fic.

I noticed the glaring tonal difference in how non black people like Kiko, who originally brought up the issue, are in comparison to the black female bloggers that I referred to earlier, after they expressed frustration about the new crop of fandom shit.

I couldn't find the ask that @/Fulltacs (a non black person) answered when asked about why the writer was getting heat, but I read the ask and it was actually pretty respectful towards fulltacs, while being incredibly dismissive/rude when referring to Bre (@/ungodlybre)

I've seen several of my white mutuals repeat in their tags/posts the issue about the fic and what not. I have yet to see them receive the kind of directly antagonistic asks from anons who claim to be black/poc with the intent to shut down or convince us to stop talking about the writer. I’m not gonna get into digital blackface or blackfishing but I have my doubts on these anons being racially black.

Overall this is all an example of something called racial gaslighting but specifically misogynoir

Misogynoir is a form of racial microaggression towards black women where race and gender meet. It usually stems from implicit bias, which is the reason why people had a problem with the fic in the first place. Not the damn kink. or even the unwitting use of an anti black slur. 

The continued dismissing about word use/forgiving the author and the overall vitriolic tone asking these black women to educate or saying things like: ' You are a bully’ ‘shut up because it's not that big of a deal’, ‘the writer tried or I'm black and-' is just an example of how black women are spoken to on and outside the internet and why many of us have chosen to not directly say anything about racism outside of private messages. 

It’s why Kiko and the mutual that dm’d @/auspicoustidings are latinas who’ve chosen to address the situation as an act of solidarity when Jess (kyletogaz) and I were excited to read the Mace fic and were unsettled by it

I don’t have the time or the desire to do a crash course on misogynoir and the ways implicit bias shows up in real life and fandom. What I can say is if you need or want the visibly/vocally black people in this fandom to shut the fuck up right now, while non black people (including the author) are being afforded a sense of kindness/assumption of innocence and well doing for speaking up, than you are apart of an anti black problem

Those black bloggers said innocuous shit like “long suffering sigh” or “hate to see it” and are still getting hate and that is the reason we are saying many fics about black characters like Kyle who is often disregarded, make us uncomfortable . This kind of bias is a dog whistle only those who have been raised black/poc see irl and it’s present in the way people write fics. 

My ask is for people to take a second and really ask yourselves if you think this is a safe space for Black/non black poc people to educate on racist tropes in writing and then I wanna know if you even realized that before I said something

For the last time, people who say "queer is a slur" are not attacking you for identifying as queer. And before you spout off about how I'm just a widdle baby gay who only thinks it's a slur because of "terf rhetoric," I do know the activist history of the term and why some people love it. Some of the people who love it and identify with it are my closest friends. That doesn't change the fact that the people of my rural southern hometown, not to mention my own flesh and blood, used the slur against gay and trans people for years and still do, and I highly doubt they were all "tricked by terfs" into using that as the primary insult for gay and trans people.

Queer is a slur. That's why it was used in activism in the first place. I reclaim the slur dyke, I literally identify as a dyke, but I don't shout and holler when someone tags a post of mine with "d slur" because I understand that it's not personal and that they're doing it for their own comfort. On that note, I often see the biggest shouters of "queer is not a slur!!" claiming that queer is a radically accepting political identity in the same breath. Dude, it's either a completely neutral identity descriptor or a radical political reclamation; it can't be both.

I'm trans, I'm a dyke, and though the modern definition of queer may apply to me, I don't identify as that. I'm sick of seeing the obnoxious kneejerk reactions to me setting one boundary about what I don't want to be called.

We all know racism affects us daily since the safety of coming out the womb, so I'm not asking how long racism has affected your life

What I'm asking is when did you first realize that the way someone treated you was because of the color of your skin and/or your identity. That "they are treating me this way because I am ______"

This could be your mom in preschool explaining you that your friends always want and don't share the white baby doll because they think it's prettier than the black one

This could be your white neighborhood kids playing tag and telling you you can't come in their house bc their dad doesn't like Black people (this has happened to me, age 10)

This could be your teachers choosing the white kids with the "easy" names and skipping over you and others because your name is "difficult" and you finally peeped the pattern.

It could be your peers saying your food is "smelly" or "weird" just bc you actually got a home cooked cultural meal for lunch

To celebrate (?) the Paris 2024 Olympic Games starting in a few weeks, I thought I'd run another Olympic-themed poll tournament. This time, we're diving into history and getting to know some of the stranger, lesser-known stories of the Games.

Polls will run for a week, and the tournament should last until around early September if I'm doing my math right. The first polls will begin Monday, July 15th.

Tumblr user @thefirsthogokage asked why i hate being called Inuk in the tags of a reblog so to start with the word Eskimo, please check my faq pinned post here because that's the first point.

Inuit is not the chosen name of my culture. We've called ourselves Inupiat or Eskimos, but never Inuit because the word inuit just means people in general and the -piat suffix, in this context, means we're refering to our people specifically. So no, i'm not just inuk, i'm specifically Inupiaq

The visuals that come to mind when someone refers to the Inuit are also almost exclusively Canadian Inuit, which leads to non-Eskimos having a very narrow concept of the various cultures of peoples who have been called Inuit by accademics; peoples who are typically nomadic and can be found from the coasts of Greenland, across Canada, to part of Alaska so far out west it's on the other side of the International Dateline. Some of these peoples, like my family, don't feel the word Inuit accurately represents their cultural identity and feels overly generic for how much diversity and variation there is to be found.

Eskimo is also a bit overly generic, but feels truer to my cultural experience. For one, it actually includes the Yup'ik peoples (who deserve consideration in this conversation but are often ignored because fuck nuance and autonyms i guess?), and two, it's not a slur in Alaska. I wouldn't even compare it to how they call cigarettes "fags" in the UK. In Alaska you're more likely to be called a drunk or some variation of the n-word as an anti-native slur than Eskimo. And Eskimo is faster than saying "the North Slope Inupiat, Seward Peninsula Inupiat, Inupiat from either of the Diomede Islands, King Island Inupiat, Central Yup'iit, Pacific Yup'iit, Saint Lawrence Island Yup'iit, and/or Siberian Yup'iit" or even just "Inupiat and Yup'iit" because (if you'll allow me to indulge in some snark) hey, whaddya know, Alaska isn't Canada and has its own history pre- and post-colonization.
