Last month while getting veggies from the green grocer, I came across a new kind of leafy vegetable. The vendor was a young boy who did not know what they were called or how they should be cooked. My adventurous spirit nudged me on and depending upon the power of the internet and WhatsApp I bought the leaves.
Boy! Was I in for a big surprise: I could not find anything looking like what I had bought under the search around Leafy vegetables / leafy vegetables in Mumbai.I Posted a high-resolution image on WhatsApp, but alas none of my contacts passionate about cooking had ever seen it. Felt so let down by everyone…
Next day, I asked my domestic help, who is also a cook for many homeowners, what I could do with them. But, she also had never seen them. Was it a case of some new hybrid vegetable or what?
Just as I was about to give up, I got the name, as well as a recipe from a globetrotting friend, who is not really into cooking. Turned out to be a great locally grown health food, at a very cheap price

Bhopal: My First impression

I traveled this Saturday to attend the Finals of the Startup Oasis competition for Ideate Unconvention, Bhopal. As the plane was getting ready to land. I looked out of the window for getting the first impression of Bhopal, which was the runner up in the Swachh Sarvekshan 2017. (the results of which had been recently announced). A part of me was skeptical since both first and second places had been taken by cities in MP. But, the view from the sky made a part of that skepticism go away: I could see an Aerial view of a green and decently planned city, with vast open spaces. I was already looking forward to a pleasant day ahead.
Got a cab and was soon on my way to IIFM. It was 7.30 in the morning. I rolled down the window and eagerly looked around: Most cars were driving with windows rolled down. No honking of vehicles around and everyone seemed to be enjoying the drive, without any pretensions of being in a more “urgent” situation than the next car. So, no overtaking, no rash driving, no breaking of signals.
The air was fresh and smelled of rains. What greeted me was a feast for the eyes after Mumbai: clean streets, no garbage dumpsters blocking the roads, no piles of garbage waiting to be picked up, and wonder of wonders: no construction material piled around. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan seems to have been taken very seriously here.
No vehicles blocked our way, everything was parked in the correct place.
As is my habit, I got talking to the cabbie about his city and where he lived. I learned that even the domestic helpers and unorganized workers in Mumbai lived in clean multi-storey buildings provided by the government, unlike the unhygienic, claustrophobic shanties found in most metros. I already liked the city and its administration!
IIFM campus, the event venue was another story: about 20 peacocks greeted me as I entered the gates. Everyone preferred to walk to the gate, about 2 km from the venue, and explore IIFM Campus’s breathtaking beauty. Once outside, I could not help notice the well-marked out cycling tracks. On inquiry, I learned that Bhopal even has on offer cycles on rent, and the bus stands usually have cycle stands too. So, you not only get a cycle but can ride it too! I was already in love with the city. And, you can also hail auto-rickshaws on the app: something which I am yet to see in Mumbai, the city which survives because of autos.
There was more waiting to entice me.Everyone was polite and well mannered, be it the guard at the IIFM gate who helped me recharge my phone while insisting that I sit in his chair and wait for the cab, or the IIFM students who not only attended the event but also accompanied us to the gate on our walk back. On my way back to the Raja Bhoj Airport, my cab driver even asked me if I would like to pack some dinner as the airport did not have too many food options!
Strangers in the mall and at the airport took time to look at the big 4 feet long take away cheque we had won, and…after reading it every single one made it a point to smile at me, congratulate me or even ask me about the event. I wondered how people could make time to do that! Was it that the clean and green environment had had a soothing effect on everyone?
No one seemed to hurry, but everything happens in time, unlike most metros where everyone seems to be rushing around without much getting done.
Went to a mall to meet a friend in the evening, and another surprise awaited me: Two cold coffees for Rs. 120, and an authentic dish of Chokha Bati for just RS. 80…Involuntarily compared this with my city where a single coffee in a mall would have cost about Rs. 200. So, the city is clean, green, well-mannered as well as cost-effective. Wow!
On my way back, passed the Raja Bhoj lake. A vast expanse of water, but clean sparkling water, well-maintained walkways. But again no litter even though crowds were thronging the place. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan again on display. And the cabbie actually took pride in showing off the lake, and all the other places that we passed by! And that is when I realized the simplest way to make any city worth living in is that everyone, irrespective of their social standing, should have a reason to feel pride in their city.
Find a way to do that and automatically everyone will want to make their city better. Maybe that is why we are at our best behavior in the metro and worst in a local. Unlike a metro, a local has no aspirational value attached to it. How the Bhopal administration did this will make for another piece of writing, another day. For now, I will just say that I came back totally enamoured by the place, ready to retire in the city if possible. After all, how many cities can boast to have a real amalgamation of history as well as modernity without the negativity it is often associated with?

Some girls from Sophia college, Mumbai, visited the Helper4U office last week as they were doing a survey for domestic helpers as a project. One of the topics of discussion was about the issues faced by domestic workers in a city like Mumbai. The following case study shows typical issues that a domestic worker faces:
Gulnaz is a 20-year-old woman from a village and is a full day domestic worker for an urban family in Mumbai. She does utensil cleaning, mopping, sweeping, dusting, cooking, taking care of a 4-year-old, laundry, making beds, cleaning cupboards, watering plants and many other similar tasks.
She was forced to work as a domestic worker because of the drought in her village, and lack of education to do anything else. Her husband has also been unable to find any regular work since they migrated to Mumbai. Gulnaz soon found that being a domestic worker is more difficult than she thought. Her work grievances include:
Low pay and long working hours
Gulnaz works hard for 10-12 hrs a day but gets paid just Rs. 10,000 since she is “untrained” as per her employer. She will receive a pay rise of only about 5% next year.
No job training
Gulnaz used to do all her own household work but has no idea about how to operate modern household appliances. Microwave, mixer, washing machine, television. All these are alien concepts to her. Her employer, rather than training her properly, just explained things once. Obviously, she couldn’t understand the instructions properly and still struggles to follow complex instructions. Consequently, the employer calls her dumb, untrained, useless, etc. while continuing to employ her.
There are many mobile-based pieces of training available now. If only her employer had shared these with her it would have been a win-win for both. If employers do not have the time or energy to train your Helpers, they can outsource the training. Organizations like Helper4U conduct customized one on one training as well as group training for domestic workers. These can be done even over mobiles now, using the video call facility.
No regular or fixed work schedule
Gulnaz does not have a fixed schedule for her work and has no rest times; she can be asked to do any work at any time. Ad hoc requests come in all the time, like making snacks for guests, taking the child to the park, polishing the shoes, or messaging “Madam’s feet”. But, at the end of the day, she has to complete all her daily chores, even if it means staying back after her shift.
No private space
She has no privacy, no space where she can rest, lie down or just use her phone. Even to use the toilet she has to go to the common communal toilet in the basement, meant for all maids. She cannot use any of the 3 toilets she cleans every day in the employer’s home.
Lack of social life & support system
Gulnaz has only 2 days off in a month. When she gets to complete the pending work in her own home. Even during festivals she gets no holidays and is expected to work overtime to spruce up the house of her employer. 
When does she get her own house ready for any celebration? How does she visit a doctor or school for her own child? Who picks up her child from school while she is taking care of her employer’s child? No one has answers to these questions. Visits to grocery stores and vegetable stands are the only times she can socialize with people outside her household. 
Further, she has no right to ask for a yearly vacation. Her request for a trip back home can be turned down (even if she agrees to go without a salary) and if she goes she could also lose her job.
Lack of social insurance
The law doesn’t require Gulnaz’s employer to provide social insurance. And, most employers would not want to hire her when she crosses 40 years of age as they want someone active, young, fast and able to physically handle the demands of domestic chores. As a working woman can we empathize with this working woman, who allows many of us to have a career? How can we help her overcome some of these challenges?
