Disco Lights And A Glint In The Eye Of Dancing Girls At The Candybox Night
London
Monday @ Thrash
Trash was ahead of the curve as it kept people on the dancefloor with a beat as it filled the gap between “bands” and electro DJs. The club night, headed by Erol Alkan who was bored with Brit Pop launched 1997 for all the weirdos who needed somewhere to let their hair down, whether that was a bowl cut, a fringe or a wig, it was cutting edge in every way. For 10 years Trash was found in Soho every Monday, initially at Plastic People before bowing out at The End and it influenced music, art, fashion and culture more than others.
Bands like Gossip, Bloc Party and Klaxons performed before Erol and DJ’s played a mix of electro and pop along with indie remixes. It was the first place to play House Of Jealous by The Rapture, they became the tastemakers, labels would deliver the first pressings of songs to them before anyone else. The Strokes visited on their first London trip, it was London’s Studio 54 and like London’s new romantic HQ, Blitz Club, Trash had its regulars who’d go all out and dress up, known as the Trash Kids who controlled the door policy, no suits or casual wear allowed, make the effort or go elsewhere.
Attendees were varied, from A-lister celebs and NME cover stars to genre-head-fuck Peaches and legends such as Lemmy and Grace Jones. The dawn of electroclash in 2000 changed what Trash was about, after championing a mix of guitars, pop and dance in its first 3 years, the arrival of Fisherspooner and Chicks On Speed made sense to what the club had been banging on about. The night's mix of bands and beats inspired Klaxons to do the same.
Tuesday @ White Heat
One of the most important (and the longest running (it is still going!)) indie disco is White Heat which started in 2003 in Mayfair, offering a distraction from dance music littering London late nights at the time. The club has adapted with underground culture and its move to Madame Jojo’s in April 2005 saw it become the heart of Soho every Tuesday.
Everyone from Lorde to Klaxons, Adele, Florence & The Machine, the XX and Jamie T, played White Heat before they went huge. Founder Matty was always ahead of the game for live music, he was more than just the promoter, when he discovered new talent that he believed in, he’d support them in every way possible, such as creating the White Heat record label for them. There’s no profit in selling 7”’s and the club night was no money-making machine, beers cost £2.50, which was always helpful when you’re living on your student loan!
One legendary moment at White Heat was when The Pun Lovin’ Criminals played, a covers band featuring Fred MacPherson (Spector, Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man, Les Incompetents), Dev Hynes (Blood Orange, Lightspeed Champion, Test Icicles) and more played a covers set of indie classics, Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) joined in for Reptilia by The Strokes.
White Heat had to leave Madame JoJo’s after the venue had its license revoked following an altercation nearby. This coincided around the same time that other central London venues were being shut down, either for Cross Rail or gentrification. It is hard to get a drink in Soho past midnight these days, in the 2000’s there were late bars and club nights for everybody which opened until the early hours every night of the week. That culture has been pushed out to East London, away from the tourists and the people with money. It seems crazy that you could pay £5 to get into a club night, watch a band that will be huge in a couple of months' time then another fiver gets you a couple of beers in. What a time.
Thursday @ Candybox or Smash ‘n’ Grab
Thursday’s belonged to Candybox at Moonlighting but there isn’t anyone who can compete with Mairead Nash and Tabitha Denholm, better known as the Queens of Noize when it comes to “living it”. The pair have been promoters, DJs, presenters, they have had their own label and managed artists, the duo have been key players in the scene since 2002. They found the best new bands and put them on at 333 in Shoreditch and the Barfly in Camden but it was their arrival at Punk in Soho on Thursday’s in 2007 with Smash & Grab that got everyone talking. It quickly attracted A-listed like Kate Moss and Daisy Lowe on the dancefloor, Mark Ronson on the decks and bands would play without an announcement. People would queue for hours to get in and raid the dress up box while paparazzi would be waiting outside to snap the famous faces stumble out. After establishing itself at Punk the night had at residencies at various nightlife haunts across the capital.
Friday @ Club NME
Friday nights in London belonged to Club NME at Koko in Camden, a venue too beautiful for teens on the piss but in 2005 it became the destination for 12 years. The main room had DJs playing the generic indie hits (Mr Brightside, Predict A Riot, etc…) then upstairs was the Frog room with DJs playing something a little cooler. As it had the NME link, each week a band would play, the next week they would be in the charts.
We’ll come on to Saturday’s @ Frog later…
Other influential nights include:
Young & Lost Club
While Queens of Noize were starting up their night in Shoreditch, two teenagers Nadia Dahlawi and Sara Jade launched their own fanzine, Pyrrha Girls. The pair met at boarding school and bonded over The Strokes which led to them starting the fanzine and one of the first print outlets to cover Razorlight and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
This gave them the foundations to start something “real”, the Young & Lost Club nights where they would book emerging talent including the likes of The XX, Klaxons, Friendly Fires, Jamie T and Laura Marling before they went big then in 2005 they launched the Young & Lost Club record label.
In ten years it would release music from many unknown bands who would go on to do huge things including Bombay Bicycle Club, Bastille and Noah & The Whale as well as scene favourites Larrikin Love, Vincent Vincent & The Villans, Johnny Flynn and The Virgins. It started with a 7”, Vincent Vincent & The Villans single, Blue Boy and each release would be sold out before they came out. After building up a relationship with Noah & the Whale, Young & Lost Club took a bigger step as they released their debut album, Peaceful The World Lays Me Down in August 2008 which spent 6 weeks in the top 10.
Dollyrockers
Laura Marsh, frontwoman Screaming Ballerinas launched her own night Dolly Rockers. “Me and my best mate Eloise wanted to create a night that had our favourite new bands in a more fun setting than other nights that were going on at the time. We had ‘confetti girls’ throwing ripped up glitter and newspaper in the air and people dressed insanely. It was the fucking best. It was a way of us having as much fun as possible in our own world.”

I just googled the label of my thriftstore dress and apparently it's from a line that was mainly produced in the 60s and they go for 100-200 euro on etsy. Neat, not that I'm planning on selling it, it's just always fun to know you got something actually vintage for no money :) :)

Why do we Love...
Pattie Boyd
Pattie Boyd came into our life during our teen years, my sis and me always loved The Beatles and we knew first about Yoko and Linda, and some time later about Cynthia. We found Cyn very beautiful and lovely and we start collecting photos of her from a Southamerican website. At this website there were photos of all the Beatlegirls and then I came across Pattie, I found her very beautiful, young and fresh looking girl, but as my favourite Beatle was John, I had to stick with Cynthia, until I saw The Beatles Something video...
[Pattie Boyd in Something video, 1969]
I remember it well, I was with my sis for a New Year's Day lunch in a friends home and this video came across TV as The Beatles 1 was just launched, and I fell in love with that beautiful young blonde woman on TV. That day I decided I would search for her over the internet and see what I could find.
[Pattie Boyd pictured by Barry Lategan, 1964]
At home we start searching for Pattie and we found, besides this Southamerican great site, lots of other sites like "It's Only Love", "Pretty Blue Eyes" and "Dollyrocker". Thanks to these sites we saw that Pattie was a successful model in the 60s, she had a great style and she looked beautiful and funny. In these sites there was always a "very special thanks" feature and there was always a girl called Lynn mentioned there and my sis ans me were just curious, and in one of these sites there were the Yahoo Groups linked so we thought that it could be great to join them, but we weren't sure because we need to had a yahoo mail and we didn't have one back then...
[Pattie Boyd pictured for UK Vogue magazine, 1st October 1970]
When finally my sis and me had our yahoo mails, we joined the yahoo groups for the beatlegirls, there were lots of them, but in the end we just stayed at the ones that provided best information, best pictures and there was no spam. In those groups we met lots of interesting people who collect photos, we shared them and it was great fun.
[Pattie Boyd pictured in Trafalgar Square the 27th July 1969 for a March for Peace]
As we were in these groups, we started collecting more and more pics that we kept in floppy discs (do you remember them?) and our dream was to build a great website for them, so we started using the picso platform and we were quite satisfyed, then we moved our collection to webs, and finally to facebook. We bought lots of magazines (overall Vogue from 1969 as it was my favourite Pattie era) and we wanted to share them without tags and with great quality scans as everybody deserved to see the greatest quality pic of their idols.
[Pattie Boyd at the peak of her modelling carrer having 4 Vogue covers in 1969!]
Yahoo groups were shut down and I had a facebook page for Pattie, Jenny and Paula that had lots of likes, comments, shares... it was a real success, so big that I had to close it down because I couldn't manage, it was sad for me because Pattie was my favourite beatlegirl and I wanted to have a proper site for her, but then they came facebook groups with great collections so I just joined them having in mind to share my great collection of scans and screencaps, a thing I still have to do...
[Pattie Boyd for UK Vogue, 15th April 1969]
As we were saving, sharing and making our site for Pattie and her sisters, we discovered she was more than just a muse, she was behind Something, but also from some other Beatles song; she was a model and did some acting, she didn't gave up her modelling carrer as her husband wanted her to do; she discovered Eastern philosophy by 1967 and she encouraged George Harrison and the rest of the Beatles to follow... George Harrison is aknowledged to have brought Eastern music to pop music, this has been a cultural revolution in the 60s and it's great four young musicians wer part of it, but it happened thanks to Pattie, and I would like that everybody aknowledges her for that, as this was a great change in the 20th century and she was in the middle of it, and sometimes she is refered just as "THE muse" of two great rock icons, but she was more than that.
[Pattie Boyd in Bangor, Wales, August 1967]
Today, on Pattie's 79th birthday we want to remember her for what we like and admire her.
Here we share:

How cool 😎 is this fabulous bag from my wonderfully talented friend Angela @dollyrocker_22 She normally makes these as ‘makeup bags’ which open out flat but me being me has repurposed it into my medication bag. It fits all my tablets in so they are all in a handy place when I need to take them day or night. Plus have you looked at that amazing fabric? She knows my orange and blue obsession well 😂. Seriously though I would go check out her shop as her work is brilliant. #toriastrinkets #trinketsandtreats #dollyrocker #makeupbag #insta #instahandmade #saynotoplastic #mibaigb2b #instasewing #reducereuserecycle #cheshire #cheshirelife #handmadegift #mumssupportingmums #mumsinbusiness #bossbabe #chronicpainwarrior #meningitissurvivor (at Manchester, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B03yfd1lZEP/?igshid=15vglz2zqcxbm

Floral printed cotton dress, Dollyrockers by Sambo, c. 1967, England.
‘Dollyrockers by Sambo’ was a popular British ready-to-wear fashion brand devised to cater for teenagers and young women. Following the lead of new brands devoted to youthful, energetic fashion, such as Mary Quant, manufacturer Samuel Sherman (nicknamed ‘Sambo’) made Dollyrockers clothes from 1963 to the late-1970s.
