Notes
Everybody is all smiles for the group picture, from heroes to villains and everything in-between. Even characters who were otherwise sticks in the mud like Hank genuinely smile for the picture. Villains such as Muntz, de la Cruz, Lotso, Thunderclap and his gang, Syndrome, Evelyn, Randall, Waternoose, Hopper, Skinner, and Ercole, as much of evil psychopaths they were, are seen tenderly and respectfully singing along. Even Sid, who was a massive bully to Hannah, is seen giving her a kind brotherly embrace. Also, most movies’ main cast seem to be cramped together. Even the villains stand near their respective heroes, everyone in a healthy relationship with their families and loved ones are tenderly holding each other close, and many of the larger characters offer their bodies for the smaller ones.
Forky, Heimlich, Dory, Jack-Jack, Mater, WALL-E, and one of the triplets wave at the camera.
Dim and Wee Dingwall give the camera dopey smiles.
The egg-shaped bluebirds and the gawky bird stand perched above the entrance. The bluebirds are happy to have the gawky bird with them, a far cry from how they treated him in their short.
Sulley carries Boo tenderly in his arms. Helen does the same to Jack-Jack, as do Presto with Alec, Carl and Russell with Kevin’s babies, Elinor and Fergus with their triplet sons, Embarrassment with Envy, Massimo with Machiavelli, and Izzy with Sox.
Terri attempts to dance before his other half stops him.
Hank carries Marlin, Dory, and Nemo in a coffee pot.
Voyd and Abby giddily bounce in place, clearly the most excited for the photo.
Linguini carries Remy while Colette holds Django and Emile.
WALL-E and EVE hold the umbrellas from The Blue Umbrella.
HAN-S still can’t stay still, shaking aggressively as the photo is taken.
Kevin and her babies take the time to mimic Carl once again.
Maudie and the Clan Dingwall hunk share a loving look.
Young Macintosh flexes his pecs while giving the camera a cocky smile, the same type of smile given by characters like Terry, Darby, and Clod.
The Witch has her Crow standing perched on her shoulder.
Being stationary volcanoes, Uku and Lele are unable to leave their photo. Thankfully, they have Thunderclap to hold it so they can be in the group picture.
Nostalgia sticks her head out from behind Embarrassment, clearly hiding from the other emotions.
Riley, Grace, and Bree all carry Knick together while Riley’s parents carry the Miami and Florida knick knacks, Val and the Fire Hawks carry the Egypt, Jamaica, Palm Springs, Israel, and Death Valley knick knacks, and Coach Roberts carries Sunny Atlantis in her fish bowl.
Cindy, Son’s fiancĂ©e, winks at the camera as the photo is taken.
Machiavelli gives the camera his standard bored look.
Mei has her red hair, panda ears, and panda tail, continuing to embrace her panda.
Aaron Z gives the camera a thumbs up while Tae Young makes a heart with his hands.
Izzy gives Sox a neck scratch.
Alisha and Kiko’s inclusion also counts due to their backlash following the movie’s release.

Does art make a difference?
Aw, sure. Of course there are degrees of extremity to the potential change that art can effect, depending on how many people are able to engage with it. The Beatles made a huge difference in the world. But Henry Darger, Jeff McKissack, Karen Dalton, Pauline Oliveros, Kenneth Patchen – there are so many folks who have made great art and not gotten massively famous for it, yet I think there are all sorts of ways their work informs and shapes other people’s work, and brains, and decisions.
Should politics and art mix?
Well, everything mixes, the New Statesman! That’s like asking if a knee-reflex hammer and a quadriceps tendon should “mix”.
Is your work for the many or for the few?
That’s for the many/few to say. I just crank out the hot jams.
If you were world leader, what would be your first law?
Gravity. I feel like we need to tighten up the constitutional protections that particular law enjoys. It’s a ticking time bomb, if you ask me.
Who would be your top advisers?
Cute angel on one shoulder, cute devil on the other.
What, if anything, would you censor?
Maybe we could all agree to not bust each other’s chops all cut-dang day.
If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?
Don’t know, banishment might be a little extreme, but I’d sure like to take that Stephen Hawking dude down a notch or two. Right? Are you with me?
What are the rules that you live by?
Basically, “bros before hos”. I feel like if you stay true to that, everything else just kind of falls into place.
Do you love your country?
I love William Faulkner, Dolly Parton, fried chicken, Van Dyke Parks, the Grand Canyon, Topanga Canyon, bacon cheeseburgers with horseradish, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grand Ole Opry, Gary Snyder, Gilda Radner, Radio City Music Hall, Big Sur, Ponderosa pines, Southern BBQ, Highway One, Kris Kristofferson, National Arts Club in New York, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Joni Mitchell, Ernest Hemingway, Harriet Tubman, Hearst Castle, Ansel Adams, Kenneth Jay Lane, Yuba River, South Yuba River Citizens League, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”, “Hired Hand”, “The Jerk”, “The Sting”, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”, clambakes, lobster rolls, s’mores, camping in the Sierra Nevadas, land sailing in the Nevada desert, riding horseback in Canyon de Chelly; Walker Percy, Billie Holiday, Drag City, Chez Panisse/Alice Waters/slow food movement, David Crosby, Ralph Lauren,San Francisco Tape Music Center, Albert Brooks, Utah Phillips, Carol Moseley Braun, Bolinas CA, Ashland OR, Lawrence KS, Austin TX, Bainbridge Island WA, Marilyn Monroe, Mills College, Elizabeth Cotton, Carl Sandburg, the Orange Show in Houston, Toni Morrison, Texas Gladden, California College of Ayurvedic Medicine, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Saturday Night Live, Aaron Copland, Barack Obama, Oscar de la Renta, Alan Lomax, Joyce Carol Oates, Fred Neil, Henry Cowell, Barneys New York, Golden Gate Park, Musee Mechanique, Woody Guthrie, Maxfield Parrish, Malibu, Maui, Napa Valley, Terry Riley, drive-in movies, homemade blackberry ice cream from blackberries picked on my property, Lil Wayne, Walt Whitman, Halston, Lavender Ridge Grenache from Lodi CA, Tony Duquette, Julia Morgan, Lotta Crabtree, Empire Mine, North Columbia Schoolhouse, Disneyland, Nevada County Grandmothers for Peace; Roberta Flack, Randy Newman, Mark Helprin, Larry David, Prince; cooking on Thanksgiving; Shel Siverstein, Lee Hazlewood, Lee Radziwill, Jackie Onassis, E.B. White, William Carlos Williams, Jay Z, Ralph Stanley, Allen Ginsberg, Cesar Chavez, Harvey Milk, RFK, Rosa Parks, Arthur Miller, “The Simpsons”, Julia Child, Henry Miller, Arthur Ashe, Anne Bancroft, The Farm Midwifery Center in TN, Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Clark Gable, Harry Nilsson, Woodstock, and some other stuff. Buuuut, the ol’ U S of A can pull some pretty dick moves. I’m hoping it’ll all come out in the wash...
Are we all doomed?
If we keep our expectations pretty low I think we might be fine. I mean, we’re definitely all dying at some point. There’s no getting around that. But between now and then, things might start looking up!
— Joanna Newsom for The New Statesman, 2008

The Odd one is here hhhhh
This will be more of a post about ideas and concepts I have on Hazbin characters and what I wanted to name them in my version of HH! I made these back in 2020 so sorry if they seem outdated and such.
Husk/Roger Alscher (German)
Nifty/Geneva Uchida (Japanese)
Baxter/Baxter Horvat (Croatian)
Crymini/Aimee Taylor (British)
Cherri Bomb/Cheryl De La Rosa (Dominican)
Vaggie or Polilla/Geraldine Vasquez (Salvadoran)
Dolly or Mimzy(by Alastor)/ Vita Ariti (Greek)
Alastor/Alexander Dubois (Creole)
Vox's/ Kenneth Cyril. (Caucasian-American)
Valentino/ Vincent Valentino (Mixed Mexican and Italian)
Velvet/ Shirley Fahlett (African-American)
(In my version it isn't in hell, it takes place in the 1920s mainly because Viv's hell functions like earth, earth itself has a lot of hellish periods and struggles, I wanna tackle on serious topics in an environment stock-filled with em, and I feel that certain restrictions and obstacles would make more sense in a setting like this! Thoughts?
Sounds promising, and I like the names you went with!

Siobhan Pelletier
Tumblr media
Nombre: Siobhan Pelletier
Nacionalidad: Canadiense
Likes:
Aquí si voy a sonar superficial pero me da igual. Estoy casi permanentemente a dieta.

Just Little Malkavian Things ~
Malkavians these days can do nothing but de-conceptualize, Dement, eat hot chip, and lie.
Since people seemed to enjoy the #JustLittleVentrueThings VTMB adventure, here's a matching Malkavian one. Though I'm gonna be real with ya here, I had less fun D:
I finally figured out why I have such trouble wrapping my head around depictions of Malkavians in VTM media. Books, Storytellers, and fans say it's like having a mental illness and being linked to a massive group chat. But, listen, I've lived around and with mental illness all my life. I've been in massive group chats. Being Malkavian ain't like that.
It IS like being an early-twenties English major in the midst of an existential crisis, over-worked and cross-faded outta your skull and watching horror movies to Cope(TM)
So it's like drugs. It's like you had too much weed and too much wine and are let loose on Los Angeles. Which. My friends and I have and we, coincidentally, also "fought" a stop sign. The Malkavian PC never really seemed like a character to me: she's like a collection of cliches and dude-bros doing blunts while watching slasher movies. I named her Liotta after the Psychic Shop owner, and I'm sad Liotta didn't really get to be a person.
I wasn't surprised by any of the dialog. It's a pattern. Alliteration, allusion, animal joke. Alliteration, allusion, animal joke. It lost its charm.
Often, I didn't know what the FUCK I was saying. Which is the Malkavian Experience(TM), according to Rosa.
Anyway
Nonsense time
Most characters have an extra paragraph of dialog to Acknowledge That You Are A Malkavian. Some get an extra conversation branch. For example, there's lots of new Bertie dialog and he was all impressed Liotta knows about Gehenna and Thin-bloods <3. The Anarchs characters, especially Skelter, get a lot more. Skelter, Ash, and Liotta totally vibe.
If you sneak around the Santa Monica drug house, they talk about Mercurio?? Hello?? Mercurio, you bent Masquerade by not getting beat up real good.
Zero pretense about Voerman. Yes, I have DID; yes, I am making it your problem.
When Liotta talked to Beckett, he said the DID was "something to look forward to." Goddamnit, Beckett. That's not how the Bane or mental illness works! >:-(
I've never sneaked before!!! Did you know that the Tong AND the American gang downtown have fakes in their suitcases??? Like, Full On, "it's just stuffed with newspapers, brah." They were going to kill each other over newspapers. For some reason the Tong brought the REAL suitcase along too, but I'm so past having VTM make any sort of sense. It's fine.
Accidentally pissed off Nines. I meant farmer (affectionate) and Nines thought I meant farmer (derogatory). :(
The Dementation powers are (a) pretty purple loop-de-loops, (b) not as effective as Dominate (reaaaallyyy missed a good AOE attack), and (c) oddly enough, gave more compassionate dialog choices. I mean. In the pen-and-paper version, Dementation isn't conflict-focused, so the devs had to jigger it to use as attacks. But I was touched when Liotta made Hannah believe she was Paul, so Hannah got to say goodbye. Making Samantha believe Liotta was a pet turtle was funny and spared her the pain of her friend vanishing a second time. Heather thinks her entire experience was a dream and returns to her life, more or less unscathed.
Boris?? Asked Liotta to kill Venus for him???? DUDE, WHAT. I didn't know he could counter-offer!! What happens if you take up his offer? Who controls Confession? Does it close down??
Pro Tip: don't trust the pale woman in a cowboy stripper outfit who comes out of your vent and tells you everything's fine.
I went through an ENTIRE Ventrue playthrough without puking and Liotta ate one (1) unhoused person and blew chunks. I didn't realize Diseased Blood was a threat. What happens if you skip the Plague-bearer quest? Should you just never chomp on the Downtown unhoused community?
Strauss called Liotta "young one" and I was like, sir. You're not Beckett, you can't trick me.
A rat dances in the Downtown sewers and tells Liotta that the grass is greener in someone else's asshole.
And also will take you places.
Do you know what it's like for a Capri Sun to suddenly start speaking and offer taxi services.
LaCroix: how did Bach find me??? also LaCroix: [names his company after himself] [lives in Ventrue Tower]
Liotta told Beckett that Kindred are a joke and I got extra EXP for being so sneaky.
DMP produced snuff films even before Andrei???!!!! I thought all the blood was from the lil geo-dudes.
Liotta agreed with Andrei that Caine is here and boot-scooting around in his lil Angst Mobile. :D
As bad as Liotta was in group fights, she repeatedly made bosses cower and stand quietly while she beat them to death. Andrei had a full on lay-on-the-floor temper tantrum in his war form and Liotta just. Smacked him until he exploded. She didn't even take damage!
Imalia's computer password is ALSO "cleopatra." Just like Tawni's! Dual reference to the Embrace type
IDK why I never asked this before, but, um, who does Mitnick share the bunk bed with? Barabus..?
I went back to the Empire Hotel Penthouse suite to fetch the educational book and the Russian mob dudes were still there?? Hello, sirs, your leader is dead. You can leave now.
Liotta heard the real thoughts of the Red Dragon hostess...and also some debate about the Dark Father's presence in LA, heehee.
I thought it was fun that one of the "take me away, Cabbie!" taxi replies mentioned riding in a car like father and child. :D
"Why is the Mandarin giggling at me" is a sentence that came out of my face.
With the different dialog options, sometimes it's impossible to be polite to NPCs. For example: Liotta could only call VV "dolly/doll/toy doll" instead of her preferred names; the Chinatown gun seller felt frightened, thinking we were Police or Immigration.
Some great fourth wall breaks in the dialog: "I don't want to get involved either, but tell that to whoever is playing me!" to Beckett after the Giovanni Mansion.
"You can't spell success without whatever the hell my name is."
"If I cannot win with effort, I will cheat my way to victory. I am gone." Funnily enough, this was my first run where I didn't hack in to boost stats.
"I just want it to end. I feel like I've been playing forever."
Some nice wider lore references: "I devour knowledge like the great worm devours the corpse of society" could refer to how Salout, in tapeworm form, is devouring Tremere's body and destabilizing the Clan and/or Kindred night society.
"They should have a channel devoted to you in my head" to Beckett. In his Diary, Beckett witnesses Malkavians devouring Malkav and may or may not join the Cobweb (PS check out this great fanfic where he does).
This made me stare into space for a minute and question my life choices. During the Sabbat massacre, Liotta didn't snack on any of the blood doll ghouls (ya know, the ones with the eyes gouged out). She had such high Inspection + Finance that she had $4k in her wallet and could buy blood. I wanted to test a rumor that if you don't feed on the blood dolls, you get extra EXP. You do. BUT anywAY, right before the Tremere miniboss, Liotta was sword-fighting some goons and the blood doll...attacked him for her? Like. He moved on his own. When the goon was dead, the blood doll asked if Liotta was all right. This might have been a glitch but...the horrific implications that those men are still conscious, still willful, still feeling. ACK. I hope they got out the next morning.
RIP Ming Xiao. Flamethrower right to the tiddies.
I stole @ryttu3k's idea and noclipped through the werewolf section. Liotta still killed the Garou, but I didn't want the stress.
Caine is very Caine. "Don't you get it? We've already been judged!"
Liotta went Anarch because what little backstory I came up for her was she considered Smiling Jack her sire. Nines complimented her ability to murder.
Sheriff got sooooo dizzy that he fell over right onto Liotta's sword 27 times.
Dancing werewolf ending! Seemed fitting. :D

I really want Dolly Parton to have an anime where she intervenes in peoples lives a la La rosa de Guadalupe. You can't tell me that doesn't sound amazing.

Perfume ♡ Lingerie match: Comme des Garçons x Bully Boy Lingerie
Today’s House and Designer pairing is Comme des Garçons and Bully Boy Lingerie.
Both houses present an urban, experimental, minimalist and editorial approach with a reliable core line of pebble bottles at CdG and sheer, high cut styles with Bully Boy. They are also both priced affordably, otherwise I might have chosen La Fille d’O.
Tumblr media
Viva x Comme des Garçons
CdG’s first fragrance, simply named Comme des Garçons, was an unusual unisex blend of spice with an animalistic purr that goes well with Bully Boy’s assymetrical use of zebra print in its Viva panties.
Tumblr media
Delilah x Hinoki
The pale sheer green colour of the Delilah bodysuit with its clean cut lines echos the sheer wearing Hinoki, a fresh woody cypress scent with a touch of gasoline.
Tumblr media
Rosa x Black
Black’s melange of ambery spicy woods with the house’s characteristic urban feel echos the unexpected romantic heart pattern in a youthful, pared down design with the Rosa top and matching panty.
Tumblr media
Brick and Dolly x Concrete
The contrast between a gentle, greyish blue and white elastic lends the Brick bra and high cut Dolly panty a cool soft vibe that reminds me of Concrete, with its milky, synthetic take on sandalwood.
Tumblr media
Brick and Ridge x Jaisalmer
The different colours of the four quadrants of the Ridge panty paired with the warm terracotta coloured brick bra calls to mind the dry hot spices and smoke of the incense fragrance, Jaisalmer.

Chamem-me simplesmente Ismael. Eu instalo-me tranquilamente num barco.
sou mau. NĂŁo me trato, nunca me tratei, embora respeite os mĂ©dicos e a medicina.
Daí, vieram me chamar. Me disseram; eu não quis avistar.
Salinger
Me chame de Ismael e eu nĂŁo atenderei.

“You Devilish Mummy!”: Mexican Horror in America, 1958-1963
Tumblr media
Rosa Arenas
For some people, Cinqo de Mayo means a nacho party platter, a cooler full of Corona, plastic sombreros and a pinata filled with stale butterscotch discs. For a few of us, though, Cinqo de Mayo means one thing and one thing only: Aztec mummies. The sad part of it is that it might actually make much more sense than the nachos.
After Tod Browning and his crew left the set at the end of the shooting day while working on 1931’s Dracula, they were replaced by director George Melford and a Mexican cast and crew. Using the same sets, the same cameras, and a translated version of the script, they worked all night to shoot the Spanish-language version of the film. Those who have seen both tend to agree that the Spanish version is the superior of the two. The cinematography is more vibrant and less stage-bound than the Browning version, the atmosphere is richer (possibly because they were shooting at night), and most important of all, the Mexican Dracula (Carlos Villar) smolders with a sexual energy and menace Bela Lugosi, great as he is, lacks.
Prior to the mid-’50s, most American audiences would probably be surprised to learn that Mexico even had its own film industry. That’s when low-budget producers from Sam Arkoff on down recognized the economic advantages of snapping up the US distribution rights to existing foreign genre pictures. It made perfect sense. You didn’t need to hire any directors or cameramen or gaffers. There were no actor hissy fits to smooth over. All you needed to do was dub in some English dialogue that more or less made sense, fit the action on the screen, and approximately matched the actors’ lip movements. Or maybe not, whatever. Sometimes you might want to bring in an editor to try and rearrange a few scenes so the picture and dialogue’ll make more sense to the kids at the drive-in, but even that wasn’t always necessary. Come up with a snappy English title, Americanize some of the actors’ names, and you’re good to go. The important thing is these films could be picked up for a song, and minus a few minor expenses everything they brought in was gravy.
Suddenly US theaters were full of sci-fi, horror, and westerns from Italy, Japan, Spain, and yes indeed, Mexico. Low-budget distributor K. Gordon Murray quickly established himself as the king of marketing Mexican horror cheapies to American audiences, handling films like The Man and the Monster, The Brainiac, Curse of the Doll People, and a whole lotta movies with “Aztec Mummy” in the title.  It would be nice to say these films have complex and thought-provoking storylines, that the acting is strong and subtle, that the cinematography is dazzling and the special effects on a par with any major American studio at the time, but that would really be pushing it. A lot of the films were just slapdash, flat-footed remakes of popular American films but with cheaper sets. A few of them do stand out, though, in that even the dubbed and edited versions remain uniquely Mexican, even if they do seem to tell the same story over and over again. And some of them are just plain nuts.
Tumblr media
Genre director Rafael Portillo and screenwriter Alfredo Salazar were best known for their Aztec Mummy and wrestling pictures, and in 1958 topped even Santo Meets Dracula with La momia azteca contra el robot humano, translated as The Aztec Mummy Against the Humanoid Robot or, more simply, The Robot Meets the Aztec Mummy.
As the opening narration assures us, the film is based on an “actual experiment” conducted by two scientists from “The Los Angeles University” and verified by witnesses who “signed sworn statements with a notary public” so “there is no question about this story’s authenticity.”
Please keep that in mind.
The film is told mostly in flashback and through voiceover, which is generally a sure sign you’re watching a heavy-handed bit of editorial butchery. The same sort of thing was done regularly to the US versions of Toho films, usually with a mind toward simplifying the story.
Okay, a psychiatrist (Ramón Gay) is mocked by his colleagues when he presents a paper about past life regression, so he storms home and hypnotizes his wife Flora (Rosa Arenas). We slip into a low budget flashback within a flashback as we learn Flora was once an Aztec maiden on schedule to be sacrificed when she runs off with a warrior. The village priests find them, bring them back, and bury the warrior alive after placing a curse on him. Then they fit the old Flora with a gold bracelet and breastplate inscribed with directions to the location of “the secret Aztec treasure.” Then they cut out her heart, which may say something about the effectiveness of that breastplate.
Returning to the first flashback, we learn the evil Dr. Krupp had spied on the experiment and now wants in on it. Nevertheless the good doctor decides for some reason that the best way to prove his theory is to find the bracelet and breastplate, so they all go looking. Lucky for them they find a secret passage under the pyramid that I guess is in their backyard. Moments later they find the ancient temple, the skeleton of the old Flora, and the breastplate which they take home with them. The fun doesn’t last long, though, as  the warrior’s mummy shows up at the house, grabs the breastplate, grabs Flora, returns to the temple, and prepares to cut out her heart again. At this point we’re about six minutes into the film.
Then it turns out, see, that Dr. Krupp is really a sinister underworld figure known as The Bat, and...oh screw it. Over the course of the rest of the film we get gangsters, a shootout, hypnotism, a mad scientist, a pit full of rattlesnakes, that mummy again, some Aztec rituals, a few vanishing bodies, a police investigation, a stolen corpse, a stolen brain, and a stolen “machine that uses radium,” together with lines of dialogue like, “oh, you devilish mummy!” and “continuing our search we hurried to the snake pit.” Eventually we even get a robot there near the end (though it’s more of a reanimated corpse wearing a metal suit festooned with some blinking lightbulbs),and it has a brief and slow wrestling match with the mummy.
And all of it, believe it or not, is crammed into a zippy 65 minutes. No, it’s not a particularly good film as the term is traditionally used, but it is a fascinating one. As crazy as it all gets, as big as some of the plot holes and lapses in logic may seem, the craziest thing of all is that you can’t really criticize it for any of that given that it’s, y’know, based on a true story.
Robot Meets the Aztec Mummy is a pretty extreme example of what was coming out of Mexico at the time. Other genre pictures were no less strange, maybe, but a little more sane.
Three years after Bert I. Gordon’s Attack of the Puppet People and 25 years after Tod Browning’s The Devil Doll, Benito Alazraki released his 1961 film Muñecos infernales, better known in the States  as Curse of the Doll People.
An archaeologist interested in ancient rights and such and her physician husband (Ramon Gay again) visit an art collector friend who regales them with the exciting tale of his recent trip to Haiti. While there, see, he and two friends witnessed a secret voodoo ritual that included human sacrifice. For all the crazy goings on though, the art collector couldn’t take his eyes off the idol the voodoo priests were worshipping. He thought it would make a fine addition to his collection, so the next day he went back and stole it.
(Given that the story is not told in flashback, just by some guy sitting in an easy chair, I’m tempted to think the whole Haiti angle was an invention of the screenwriter for the American version. Maybe the producer was a little tired of Aztecs by this point.)
It’s not hard to guess that stealing a revered idol from a voodoo temple is not without its repercussions, and sure enough before you know it the children of all the men on the Haiti trip start receiving new dolls in the mail. Real nice, realistic-looking ones too. None of the parents seem a bit concerned by the arrival of anonymous gifts for their children, merely handing the dolls to the tykes and sending them off to bed. After a few cuts to an oddly Mexican-looking Haitian voodoo priest, well you guessed it. the dolls start coming to life and knocking off the parents in ways that can’t easily be traced back as the work of an evil dolly.
The one surprise here is given the budget, the special effects (midgets in doll clothes on oversized sets) are really, really good. Better than Bert Gordon’s, even. It’s just too bad the story around them doesn’t have a bit more zing to it. It’s a little flabby and obvious. Still, you start to get the sense a pattern is developing.
Tumblr media
El baron del terror (released in the States as The Brainiac in 1962), directed by Chano Urueta, marked a bit of a break from the simple revenge plot. Oh wait, no it didn’t. But it was still a break from the standard storyline.
As the film opens it’s 1661, a comet has appeared in the sky, and  an evil baron  (Abel Salazar) is being burned at the stake by Inquisitors for practicing black magic. As evil barons are so wont to do when finding themselves in circumstances like that, he places a curse on all those who condemned him, vowing he would return in 300 years when the comet reappears and kill off all their descendants. The Inquisitors, for some reason, don’t seem terribly concerned by all this and go ahead and burn him anyway.
Cut to three hundred years in the future and true to his word the comet has reappeared and so has the baron, who  starts snuffing people who didn’t even know they were related to Inquisitors. Yes, it’s a plot we’ve seen how many times already? But the Brainiac, as the title might hint, does offer a twist or two. First, before he kills his victims the Baron transforms into a kind of hideous horned demon monster (the doll special effects were better). Then during the murders he sucks out his victims’ brains, which he keeps in a big salad bowl in the kitchen. When he lures someone over to his apartment and confirms their identity, all he needs to do is excuse himself to the kitchen for a moment, have a spoonful of brains, and shazam. No more descendant and more brains for the baron.
Tumblr media
A year later  Ueueta returned to more standard form with La cabeza viviente, aka The Living Head. Here again he opens with a long prologue in which he went to some pains to at least give the illusion of historical accuracy. When a great Aztec general dies, not only is he buried, but so are a few of his servants and a high priestess to help him on his way in the afterlife. That those others weren’t quite dead yet doesn’t seem to matter much. It’s all quite a big to-do.
Cut to 450 years in the future, as an incredibly bad archaeologist and two assistants stumble upon the tomb. First they completely destroy the mummy of the high priestess and shrug it off. Then when he finds the invaluable Ring of Death, the archaeologist immediately announces that he’s going to give it to his daughter, “who likes ugly things like that.” Then after reading aloud the very clear curse that will befall anyone who desecrates the tomb, the trio scurry’s off with the general’s mummified head and the mummy of his servant (the one still clutching the knife). Do they then deliver them to the museum where they can be properly cared for and kept in carefully climate-controlled environments? Well, almost: he brings them back to his apartment and keeps them in the living room.
Yeah, it’s not really hard to see where this is headed. The daughter starts wearing the Ring of Death and gets a little kooky in the head . Then the servant and head come to life and all three of them (the daughter carrying the head) go tracking down the desecrators in order to cut out their hearts.
“I know what you’re thinking,” a police inspector says after the first murder. “But I don’t believe in legends. Or in superstitions either. All I know is that this is a very difficult case.”
That’s the real killer in The Living Head. Even more so than most, the dubbing is miserable, with most of the lines either being non-sequiturs, or so plainly obvious and logical they come out sounding like non-sequiturs. I get the feeling sometimes that the voice actors they brought in were never given scripts, simply shown the film and told to make it up as they went along.
Ah, but this is merely a taste of what’s out there in terms of Mexican horror. We haven’t even considered the Santo pictures yet, and there are hundreds of those. I’m not sure if the likes of Robot Meets the Aztec Mummy would really enrich anyone’s  appreciation or understanding of Mexican independence, but there are doubtless lessons to be learned here. Namely, should you happen to find some neat stuff in a sacred temple next time you’re in Mexico, for godsakes just leave it there, no matter how cool it is. Those Aztecs mean business.

Doctors describe black box of medical care in detention facilities

Doctors describe black box of medical care in detention facilities: 'That is not medical care. That's malpractice'
By Jen Christensen and Michael NEDELMAN | PUBLISHED Jul 3, 2019 | CNN | Posted July 3, 2019 |
(CNN) - Pediatricians who have volunteered to work with migrants in El Paso, Texas, are walled off from any contact with "whoever is providing the medical care to these individuals" in government run migrant detention centers, pediatrician Dr. Carlos Gutierrez said Tuesday.
"That is not medical care. That's malpractice," said Gutierrez, who has helped treat families received by Annunciation House, a nonprofit that runs temporary residential centers that receives migrants released by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement or US Customs and Border Protection.
During a press conference on Tuesday in El Paso, the doctors said they know of dozens of additional doctors that would like to provide care, but the centers aren't allowing any of them in, as they have in the past.
The doctors said migrants report that agents take away their medicines that the migrants lacked proper nutrition.
They "describe a situation no human being should have to go through," said Gutierrez. "This is coming through the mouths of the refugees," not through media reports, he added.
Roughly six to seven weeks ago, Annunciation House was receiving between 600 and 1,000 migrants per day, according to Ruben Garcia, the organization's director. Now, it's about 100 per day -- sometimes less.
"I keep hearing that CBP facilities are overwhelmed ... and we are not seeing that," Garcia said Tuesday.
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan said Friday that it appears there will be a 25% decrease in June in the numbers of migrants crossing at the US-Mexico border, for which McAleenan credited Trump administration initiatives.
Pediatrician Dr. Jose Manuel De la Rosa said that among migrant children seen recently, they're treating problems typical of any children.
There are "no exotic diseases being seen," he said. "We see runny noses and runny bottoms. We see chickenpox, we see other childhood diseases."
In 2014, the doctors said they had access to the government facilities that were clean and well managed at the time, but De la Rosa said CBP has told them this time that "it is not current policy."
That's left Gutierrez "upset" and "angry."
"I don't think they get any of the care," Gutierrez said.
When the children are released, the doctors have no idea what kind of treatment they have had. US agencies told the doctors that they want to "respect the privacy of the refugee." But, Gutierrez said a lack of continuity of care "is piss-poor medical care."
Gutierrez said he has been deeply upset by the government centers' practice of taking away medicines that migrants arrive with, and medicines are not given back when they're released.
Overcrowding at these facilities has also been a public health problem, the doctors said. Dr. Blanca Garcia described seeing a boy about two months ago with a high fever who was eventually hospitalized.
"How could nobody have noticed that this child was so sick?" she asked. "When you have so many people in custody, I'm sure that it's easy to miss something like that.
"Unfortunately, that's how tragedies happen," she said.
Dr. Lisa Ayoub-Rodriguez said she has treated patients who haven't received "basic human needs" inside the facilities. One mother complained that she couldn't keep her child warm with the onesie and plastic blanket she was given.
"Despite her best efforts, her little newborn's fingers and toes were still blue," she said.
The mother's milk supply had dropped and she was dehydrated, Ayoub-Rodriguez said. The doctor asked if she had been given water or had asked for water and the woman told her no.
"I see this often in the population, they are afraid to ask for help," Ayoub-Rodriguez said. "This is a basic example, a very simple case of a family not receiving basic human needs, access to water and warmth. This is why children should not be in a detention centers."
Asked about the government's practice of taking medicines away and if they would allow doctors into the facilities in the future, CBP spokesperson Roger Maier said in an emailed statement:
"Our facilities are secured locations, where the employees and contractors are thoroughly vetted before they are allowed to interact with anyone in our custody. We have [US Department of Homeland Security] personnel and contracted medical staff at several locations throughout our sector who perform initial screenings and provide medical treatment when required. If the determination is made that anyone our custody needs additional medical attention, we will transport them to a local hospital where they receive the necessary attention."
AT LEAST SIX CHILDREN HAVE DIED IN US CUSTODY
Since September, at least six migrant children have died in federal custody, including three that were taken into custody around El Paso.
In June, a team of doctors, lawyers and advocates warned that there were major health and hygiene problems at several US Customs and Border Protection facilities in Texas.
Many of the children lived in what they called "deplorable conditions" and didn't have access to soap to wash their hands or toothbrushes to brush their teeth, according to a legal filing in federal court in which a group of lawyers asked a judge to hold the Trump administration in contempt and to order the immediate improvements to conditions at US facilities where children are being held.
According to the filing, some of the children said they hadn't showered in weeks. They lacked access to adequate nutrition, stayed in cold facilities and slept on the floor.
The team had visited the children because it is monitoring the government's compliance with the law.
An agreement gives children the right to "safe and sanitary conditions of detention." The Flores Agreement, as the 1997 settlement is known, also requires the government to release children from immigration detention without unnecessary delay to their parents, other adults or licensed programs. It's a settlement that the Trump administration has been pushing to end, calling it burdensome.
In addition to a lack of "basic hygiene," cases of flu were reported and lice was an issue. Medical screenings have been criticized as "inadequate."
Last month, a federal judge ordered US Customs and Border Protection to urgently permit health experts into detention facilities holding migrant children to ensure they're "safe and sanitary" and assess the childrens' medical needs.
US District Judge Dolly Gee set a deadline of July 12 for the parties to "file a joint status report regarding their mediation efforts and what has been done to address post haste the conditions described."
The American Academy of Pediatrics has long had an opinion that "children should not be in detention centers," pediatrician De la Rosa said on Tuesday.
"These are not little adults," he said, adding that children need a trained eye to handle their medical conditions.
"This is life and death," Ayoub-Rodriguez said.
