Have a glimpse into the #legacy of the #transatlanticslavetrade in Brent - also seen in #DollisHill via #GladstonePark which is another focus of the By The Cut Of Their Cloth Exhibition that presents the facts on Brent’s links to #ColonialHistory. The park has recently seen calls to be renamed due to its links with #WilliamGladstone, the former #BritishPrimeMinister who helped his father become Britian’s most compensated #plantationowner after the #abolitionofslavery in #1833. Documentary Photography - Journalism Brief Submission
Journalism Brief Part 1
On the 14th November 2017 I was put in a group with Bethan, Chloe, Zainab and Leah, then on Monday 20th November Bethan went to received the brief from the journalism students on behalf of us her team.
Our particular brief was to document a burned down pub in East Dulwhich called 'The Grove Tavern'. The pub had a kitchen fire in 2014 and has been closed ever since. There is a lot of debate in the local area about what will happen to the building, the community want the pub back because the area is big on community events that mean people can interact however the council want to build houses on the land.
We met as a group at London Road at 11am to go a shot the abandoned pub, once we reached the pub we found that the exterior of the pub was quite run down, there was broken windows, graffiti and evidence of people breaking inside the pub and vandalising it. When we got there we also realised that there was a homeless person living in the pub in what looked like a purpose built tarpaulin room in the entrance of the pub. The shoot was interesting and something I have never done before so was a new experience for me I really like the image I was able to create and think it reflected the state of the building effectively. Chloe and Zainab were also able to get into the back garden of the pub and discovered a lot of the furniture that had been left by the pub owners.
Overall I think this part of the shoot went really well, from think brief for the second part of the project I decided that I would go along the subject of abandonment. I initially thought about finding abandoned buildings to photograph but was concerned about the access of these places and finding one within the time constraints I had to work too. I also wanted to choose an important building that had some kind of history or significance surrounding it. I then decided To look for something with those traits. I found a place in North West London called 'The Paddock'. 'The Paddock' is an abandoned World War 2 bunker that was the backup for the Cabinet War Rooms below Whitehall.
Shot Plans
Below I have detailed my shot plans for my shoot at the Abandoned Pub and at The Paddock.
Journalism Part 1 - Shoot Plan/Shot List
Abandoned Pub - The Grove Tavern
Date - 21.11.17
Time - Meeting the Team at 11am at London South Bank University.
Location - The Grove Tavern
520 Lordship Lane
East Dulwich
London
SE22 8LF
Access - The Pub front can be accessed and photographed from the path, however the inside of the pub are fenced off and cannot be accessed easily.
Transport - Bus
Car Parking - N/A
Equipment -
Camera - For this shoot I will be using my Canon 70D as this is a camera I am very familiar with and feel comfortable with, I also have confidence with it and it produces good quality images.
Lenses - For this shoot I will take 2 different Lenses, I will be taking my 10-18mm wide angle lens as a backup in case I need the lens during the shoot. I will also take my standard 18-55mm kit lens to use for the majority of the shoot to photograph to capture different elements of the abandoned pub.
Tripod - I will not be taking my tripod to this shoot as I do not think I will need it.
Shot List -
While shooting at The Paddock I want to produce photographs that create a sense of what remains in the abandoned bunker. I would like to do a mixture of wide images of the corridors of the bunker and well and any details or items that have been left from the past. I feel as though the shoot will be very off the cuff because I have never been to the bunker before so do not know what remain there and what images I will defiantly be able to produce.
Journalism Part 2 - Shoot Plan/Shot List
The Paddock
Date - 2.12.17
Time - Dependant on tour time that is available.
Location - The Paddock
109 Brook Road
London
NW2 7DZ
Access - The bucker can be difficult to access for some people if they have problem with moving around small spaces and using lots of stairs. For me it will be easy to access even with equipment.
Transport - Car
Car Parking - Yes - On Road Parking
Equipment -
Camera - For this shoot I will be using my Canon 70D as this is a camera I am very familiar with and feel comfortable with, I also have confidence with it and it produces good quality images. It is also not too heavy which means I will be able to carry the camera and other equipment for a long period of time,
Lenses - For this shoot I will take 2 different Lenses, I will be taking my 10-18mm wide angle lens to produce some wide angle images that maybe needed to photograph the scale of the bunker. I will also take my standard 18-55mm kit lens to use for the majority of the shoot to photograph different details and most parts of the bunker.
Tripod - I will take a tripod with me and establish during the shoot whether I need to use it, I feel like it is likely it will be needed because of the low light that will probably be in the bunker.
Shot List -
While shooting at The Paddock I want to produce photographs that create a sense of what remains in the abandoned bunker. I would like to do a mixture of wide images of the corridors of the bunker and well and any details or items that have been left from the past. I feel as though the shoot will be very off the cuff because I have never been to the bunker before so do not know what remain there and what images I will defiantly be able to produce.
Journalism Part 2 - Contextual Research
The Paddock
The paddock is the name of a World War 2 bunker in Dollis Hill in North West London. The Paddock was intentionally built as an alternative to the cabinet war rooms in Whitehall, so that in the case the Battle of Britain failed Churchill and the War Cabinet would have a refuge from this.
Ref :http://www.kilburntimes.co.uk/news/heritage/bunker-in-dollis-hill-used-by-sir-winston-churchill-is-opened-to-the-public-1-4584180
The Bunker was constructed in secret in 1939 and was abandoned in 1944. In its 5 year life The Paddock was only used for the war cabinet meetings twice. The bunker was designed with over 40 rooms over 2 floors which could accommodate the entire War Cabinet along with 200 other staff.
Ref: http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/sites/d/dollis_hill/
The Paddock was built underneath ''The Post Office Research Station'. In 1943 Tom Flowers a post office station built Colossus Mark 1 which was the world's first programmable computer which helped to helped break the German Enigma code between 1943 and 1945. Colossus was manufacture by the Post Office Research Station.

Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossus_computer
The Paddock is over 40ft below ground meaning compared to the Cabinet War Rooms in Whitehall the Paddock was deep enough to completely withstand a bomb blast.
The Land was bought from Brent Council by Network Homes in 1997with the condition that the bunker needed to stay open to the public. Network Homes spent £15,000 to make the bunker safe for the public to have tours in. The bunker is only open about twice a year and has free guided tours that are provided volunteers for Subterranean Britannica.

Contact Sheet from The Paddock
From the Contact Sheet I settled on 9 images to edit and while editing I settled on 7 final images that for me reflected the history of the bunker well. I decided to edit the 7 images into black and white along with heightened contrast as I wanted to pull up the texture and make the images feel quite rough so that they reflected the time when the bunker was built.
Final Edited Images
Journalism Evaluation
After taking part in part one of the journalism brief around the abandoned pub in East Dulwhich I decided that I wanted to continue the idea of abandonment onto my next part of the brief. I initially decided to look into abandoned buildings in London but while researching this a lot of questions came up about how easy the access to these places would be and whether they would be accessible for me to get to. I then decided to look into places with some kind of historical significance as I have a keen interest in things like this. Though looking at this I discovered a place called the Paddock, which my father directed me too. I research into what The Paddock was and decided that this would make this the subject of my project.
I went on a guided tour of the bunker which was the only opportunity to shoot there and I think overall the shoot went really well considering the circumstances I had to work within such as the light and other conditions. I think the images came out how I wanted them to and reflected the message and details I wanted to show within the photographs. The only thing I would change about the shoot would be being able to capture some more wide angle shots of the corridors and room and have information about each room or detail shown.
After the shoot I really enjoyed the editing process through the contact sheets and editing in Photoshop as I think the editing came out exactly how I wanted the photographs to look and really impressed myself.
Overall I think this progression from the first part of the project has been successful. The photographs came out exactly how I wanted to and for my perspective worked really well in documenting the bunkers history.
Feedback
During our feedback session with Chloe and the seminar group, the general consensus from people was that they liked images but felt like the images needed more context and have more of a narrative to them. She recommended that I develop the project by looking to what the situation is now if a similar situation arose. Amy in the seminar group also recommend to maybe look into the way things age and deteriorate over time and looking at things like Big Ben or ruins around the country or even exploring urban places that have been abandoned. People also said that I could include the contextual information about the images and the bunker if I was to display the work in a exhibition which I think would be a great addition to displaying the work and maybe even using personal accounts and stories. This could also give me the opportunity to use mixed media with a mixture of sound of video recording or personal experiences.
