#pensamentododia #pensamentos #haveaniceweekend #instadaily #vidaderabiscos #rabiscos #like4likes #sketchbook #like4like #sketch #cartoon #doodles #doodlesofinstagram #SlaveryNeverEnded #slavery #abolitionofslaveryday #abolitionofslavery #internationaldayfortheabolitionofslavery #desenho #desenhos #desenhar #desenharévida #desenhar #bomfimdesemana #reflexion #reflexões #reflexão #pensamentos #pensamentosdodia #pensamentossoltos https://www.instagram.com/p/ClrHQKDMLVh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

12th May 1789, British politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade, William Wilberforce makes his first major speech on abolition in the UK House of Commons. Utlilizing evidence upon the horrors of slavery gathered through interviews and evidence by fellow abolitionist Thomas Clarkson; Wilberforce presented the argument that the slave trade was morally reprehensible and an issue of natural justice. Facing opposition from the slavery trade, and port merchants, Wilberforce presented a anti slavery bill in parliament every year for twenty years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807. Slavery was officially abolished in the British Empire with the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. Wilberforce died just three days after the passage of the Act through Parliament was assured, with 283 votes for and 16 against. William Wilberforce and the fight for abolition is featured in the historically inspired ‘The Industrial Sublime Tarot’, a unique deck featuring the events and historical characters from the years 1760 - 1848. On April 16, 1862, President Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act. This law prohibited slavery in the District, forcing its 900-odd slaveholders to free their slaves, with the government paying owners an average of about $300 (equivalent to $8,000 in 2019) for each. Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on Sept. 22, 1862, declaring “on the first day of January . . . all p’ersons held as slaves within any State, or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free." The proclamation only to states that had seceded from the United States, leaving slavery to remain unchallenged in the border states, according to archives.gov. It would take nearly two-and-half years for Lincoln’s proclamation to be relayed to Texas. June 19 marks a pivotal point in American history. On June 19, 1865, the last slaves in Texas and more broadly the Confederate South were freed. #juneteenth #culturalcommemoration #blackculture #blackhistoryfacts #blackhistory #slavery #abolitionofslavery https://www.instagram.com/p/CBo5A76HYtQ/?igshid=1q3f2fx00l7p4

On International Day for the #AbolitionofSlavery, we are reminded that slavery is not some historical relic. It's a fact of life around the world today: more than 40 million people worldwide are victims of modern slavery, and 150 million children are subject to child labour. Humanist thinkers and activists around the world played a major role in the development of the abolitionist movement. Slavery remains premised on the dehumanisation of other people. It is a practice to be despised and reviled with every fibre of our beings. https://ift.tt/3g013fQ

The history of the New World since Columbus re-discovered it is one of conquest, pillage, exploitation and forced migration of a people. For more than three centuries millions of people were forcibly transported from their homes in Africa, across the perilous Atlantic Ocean to the New World, where they were forced to labour on sugar plantations for the rest of their lives. This enslavement of a people continued until events in Europe changed the fortunes of the West Indian and North American colonies. Humanitarians started questioning the validity of slavery, there was competition from beet sugar producers in Europe, and the advent of the Industrial Revolution spawned the rise of a new group of influential men in the British Parliament who believed that slavery was no longer economically viable. In 1833 Thomas Buxton presented The Emancipation Bill in Parliament. The Act was passed and came into effect on 1 August 1834. On that day, thousands of slaves in the British West Indies became free men and women. One hundred and fifty one years later, on 1 August 1985 the government of Trinidad and Tobago became the first country in the world to declare Emancipation Day a national holiday to commemorate the abolition of slavery. -- Source NALIS Happy Emancipation Day Trinidad &Tobago!!! #Slavery #Abolition #AbolitionOfSlavery #Emancipation #EmancipationDay #TrinidadAndTobago #183YearsEmancipated (at Trinidad and Tobago)
