#doll cleaning

Was gonna wait until tomorrow to talk about my experiences today, but nope. I'll start with the one that has more pictures and less typing.

I'm trying to get my American Girls cleaned up. So I decided to start Marisol because she's my baby. (And because my OG doll is already moved to my home).

I didn't think to take a before before picture, but my girl was a mess. Younger, naive me didn't store them properly.

This is a zoomed in shot I took of all my dolls a while back. And you can see that they aren't in the best shape. Molly really shows how much dust they had on them. All over their clothes, hair, faces, etc. They were also sitting, which I later learned is horrible for their legs.

First step, get all the dusty clothes off (gonna have to figure out how to safely clean them).

Second step, clean her. I researched that dish soap or baby soap would work well, so I washed her hair and face

Third step, comb her hair. It really wasn't that bad, but the ends of her hair are looking kind of rough, so I ordered wig conditioner and I hope that'll help.

Fourth step, get her into some clean clothes

She's back in her meet outfit, minus the cover up. I don't know if her little purple sweater is considered a sweater, but since it has the design of ballet warm ups, I had her wearing it over her practice leotard. So I've swapped it for an old bear Girl Scout Brownies sweater. It's supposed to get cooler tonight, and I don't want her to freeze. I also braided her hair until I can get some conditioner on it.

The only real problem I've noticed she has is her eyes are sticking. So I have to manually open and close them.

But overall, I'm so happy with how she cleaned up. I'm grateful her limbs still work and her hair wasn't terribly matted.

Marisol was my first G.O.T.Y. (actually, my only, now that I think about it) and I loved that she loved dance just as much as I did. So she is so very special to me.

But I'll end by saying, if you have more doll care knowledge than me, throw your tips my way. Because this is one of my girls out of twelve and I know for certain some of the others are going to need a little bit more TLC to restore.

Cleaning day!

It's a nice quiet afternoon here, perfect for cleaning some dolls! Some of my collection have never been cleaned before, and have quite the buildup. You can definitely tell which ones were my favorites by how much paint residue is still stuck on XD

I'm using just a damp rag for a general wipe-down, plus a couple of pipe cleaners to get dust out of their necks and behind wings and such.

Dirtiest zelf award goes to Flamy, who's body is even sticky. He was my little sister's favorite, and grubby little hands make grubby little toys.

A few weeks ago I made the trek to visit one of my dear friends Kate's house so we could crawl up in her attic and see what kind of shit was up there. She believed a Kenner Blythe may be amongst the treasure, which prompted her to invite me. Sadly, no Kenner but we didn't leave empty handed.

And one of the treasures was a Penny Playpal Doll.

I didn't even know these dolls existed until Kate pulled her from one of the piles in the attic. Despite that, as soon as she dragged her huge body out for me to see and asked "do you want her?" How could I say no? She is so charming and reminds me so much of the my size barbie I loved in my own youth, I def wanted to take her home.

But she was SO GROSS. Nearly everything in the attic was covered in a layer of dirt, cob webs, dust, mouse poop, bug corpses, you name it. She was so grimy I had to throw her in the trunk to take her home. This was the first picture I took of her, which is kind of hilarious because it looks like something from a straight up horror movie.

She was so gross that I even had to make a special trip to target to buy her a special containment case to house her until I was ready to clean her lul

Washing her was an experience. It truly did feel like I was cleaning a small child. 🙃 I filled the plastic tub full of water and dish soap and got to work.

Once I had given her body the first scrub I took her to the kitchen to wash her hair. Her hair is pretty gross, very brittle and balding in spots, but it's not horrible. Kate told me when she was little she messed with her hair a few times so I'm not sure if it was ever cut. If it was, baby Kate did a great job keeping it even loooool.

I used baby shampoo for her head. He hair is still pretty stiff, but there are no more bug carcasses so I'm counting it as a win. 😇

She was already looking much better at this point, but this is also where I messed up. 😞 I had been avoiding submerging her because I knew she was hollow and didn't want to fill her water. However her legs were still pretty dirty and I wanted to soak them and her grimy hands a bit longer to help get some of the more stubborn dirt off. In doing so I left her to soak, thinking dipping just her bottom half would not cause a problem. Boy was I wrong!

She was decidedly heavier when I picked her up from her soak, her whole bottom half full of water. I've drained most of it at this point (thank you mommy blogs for giving tips on getting water out of toys) and I think she will be ok. I hope so at least because I would be heart broken if she got moldy. 😭

She did sure look cute sitting in the tub though looooool.

Anyway, I still have some work to do on her. I'm working now on removing the staining on her face and will continue trying to dry her out. All in all, errors and all, I am having a lot of fun cleaning her up. I love you miss Penelope, and I'm glad you are home with me! 💖😘😻

I also did some work on a Barbie and Midge doll Kate asked me to clean up, more on them in the future. ✨

Doll Mindset!! How To Achieve It 🎀

Stay Positive!! One of the biggest parts of becoming a doll, is a positive mindset. Some of our favorite dolls (EX: Barbie) always stay positive. If something goes wrong, try looking for the positive. It’s always best to look on the bright side, rather than the dark. To stay positive, try practice talking highly of yourself. Not only you, but others too. Try encouraging those around you!! Life becomes a lot more fun when you uplift others. Trust me!

Dream big!! One thing about dolls is that they know how to use their imagination. They always shoot for the stars when it comes to their goals and dreams. Also they all truly believe that if they work hard, they can achieve anything. And you should believe the same as well!! If you want to become a lawyer, work hard for it. If you want to become a nurse, work hard for it. All you need is, some imagination, ambition, hard work, and dedication. You can do it, if you put your mind to it! 

Don’t be afraid to be yourself!! The Bratz rarely care if someone disliked their fashion sense. They liked their fashion sense and that’s only what mattered. Not if some stranger gives them a weird look. So, be confident in who you are. If you like something someone else doesn’t, so what?!?! Everyone has their own preferences. We can’t all like the same thing. If we all did, what’s the fun in that?

Take care of yourself!! I will never stop mentioning that everyone should be taking care of themselves. Always, always, always invest in yourself. If you have the time to do a full on spa day for yourself, DO IT!! Because taking anytime to care for yourself, will always be worth it.

Always be up for a challenge!! The Winx Club fairies were never afraid of a challenge. Whatever came at them, they remained fearless and positive. So, when your studies get challenging remain positive. Never let the challenge bring you down!! Instead be ready for the challenge and use it to grow.

Motivate others!! Encourage & compliment others around you. Once I started complimenting people more often, my life changed. I felt more positive and I was able to make others smile. Now, it’s a daily practice in my life to motivate others!
