We are halfway through Turn Back Time 🤯 This has most definitely been the most challenging of the three books to write, simply because I haven't had as much time to spend writing so I very much appreciate those of you who still like/comment/interact with these stories.

Chapter Fifteen is taking shape and is titled For Old Time's Sake...a little sneak peak below the cut if you're interested 😉

Their assessment of their suspect’s evasion techniques was cut short when Trudy appeared in the doorway of the garage. 

“The tap you put on the girlfriend’s phone just payed off. He wants her to meet him at the Red Bridge tonight at ten o’clock.”

It wasn’t a venue Kate was familiar with but, from the knowing look that Trudy shared with Hank, she could only assume that there was a case file somewhere with at least one member of the intelligence unit’s name attached and thankfully she didn't have to wait much longer before Hank confirmed her thoughts.

“Years back, Antonio got into some hot water with a diamond dealer.” Hank explained, casting a withering glare at Ruzek who looked as though Christmas had come early. “Case led us to a sex club called the Red Bridge.”

“A sex club?” Kate clarified, both brows lifting in surprise at the thought of the experienced ex-vice detective managing to get himself tangled in a web of debauchery that, given the nature of his day job, he was all too familiar with. 

“It’s a place where people go to have se-“

“Yeah, gathered that Ruz.” She interrupted with a roll of her eyes. “What I meant was what kind of sex club are we talking here?”

“Membership only.” Jay replied with a casual shrug, confirming her assumption that he had been one of the detectives leading point on the last undercover gig. “Light BDSM, swingers, power play…but mainly just Chicago’s elite paying a small fortune to indulge in their kink for voyuerism.”

It seemed that Chicago was no different to any other city she had policed over the last decade in that it was often the richest and most prominent members of society who deemed themselves important enough that they needn't be concerned with abiding by the law.

“I’m guessing that there’s a number of Chicago dignitaries on that membership list preventing us from getting a warrant?” She asked with a huff of irritation, shaking her head in disbelief when Hank dipped his chin into a nod. 

“Well this girl clearly means somethin’ to him if he’s meeting her instead’a gettin’ his ass  outta town.” Kevin said, folding his arms across his hulking chest and Kate had to admit, the same thought had crossed her own mind the moment Trudy mentioned Dolan’s  contact with his girlfriend. After narrowly avoiding capture on not one but two occasions, there weren’t many people who would chance their luck one more time in the name of a quick screw. 

“Clearly she’s the one if he’ll risk it all to have her with him.” Kim offered, a rosy blush staining her ivory cheeks when Adam glanced over at her with a wry smile, the two of them sharing a moment before Hank cleared his throat and Kim’s eyes dropped back to the floor. 

“That or he’s more of an idiot than we thought.” He grumbled, once again questioning his life choices when he caught Burgess and Ruzek sharing lovelorn looks at one another instead of focusing on the task at hand. “We’re gonna need to get some eyes inside.”

“Yeah but we’ve all been burned.” Jay said, scrubbing an irritated palm over his sweaty forehead. “Dolan’s gonna bolt the second he sets eyes on us.” 

“I haven’t.” 

Kate had been dropping off Alexis at daycare when Kevin, Adam and Kim had pinned Dolan down at a bar in Rogers Park and both she and Kevin had been watching the front of the house earlier when Jay and Hailey barricaded him in his backyard before he’d managed to flee. It wasn’t lost on Hank that this was the first time that Kate had willingly offered to take a UC assignment since the incident with Pulpo but he couldn’t be sure if it was because she was the only member of the unit Dolan wouldn’t recognise or because she genuinely felt ready but, regardless of her intentions, he was quick to dispel any discussion around the prospect of sending her in alone.

“You’re not going in solo.”

“Who said anything about going solo?” She retorted and for a moment he wondered if she was going to suggest drafting in young Torres for the assignment but, from the impish quirk of her lips, it soon became apparent just whom it was that she was suggesting as her UC partner.

A prominent New Hampshire Democrat plans to file a complaint with the state attorney general over an apparent robocall that appears to encourage supporters of President Joe Biden not to vote in Tuesday’s presidential primary.

The voice in the message is familiar — even presidential — as it’s an apparent imitation or digital manipulation of Biden’s voice.

“What a bunch of malarkey,” the voice message begins, echoing a favorite term Biden has uttered before.

The message says that “it’s important that you save your vote for the November election.”

“Voting this Tuesday only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again. Your vote makes a difference in November, not this Tuesday,” it says.

The message concludes with a phone number belonging to Kathy Sullivan, a former New Hampshire Democratic Party chair who is now running a super PAC supporting the campaign to urge New Hampshire Democrats to write in Biden’s name in the primary. 

Biden’s name does not appear on Tuesday’s ballot, a consequence of state elections officials setting the date of the primary ahead of South Carolina’s on Feb. 3, the first sanctioned contest of the 2024 nominating race under new Democratic National Committee rules.

But local supporters launched the late write-in effort as a way to both marshall support for Biden and send a message to the national party about the Granite State’s coveted, century-long tradition of holding the nation’s first primary.

In an interview, Sullivan said she began receiving calls Sunday evening from those who had received the message. One woman she spoke to told her that Biden had called her, though she said she was not a Biden supporter.

“I said, ‘You got a call from Joe Biden, and he gave you my number?’” Sullivan said she responded.

A volunteer for the write-in effort also received the call and recorded it, according to Sullivan, and shared it with organizers of the Biden write-in campaign. One of the organizers then shared it with NBC News.

It’s not clear how many voters received the call or which types of voters were targeted. Lists of voters’ phone numbers can be readily purchased from data brokers.

And Sullivan said while it isn’t clear who is behind the robo-call, “It’s obviously somebody who wants to hurt Joe Biden.”

“I want them to be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible because this is an attack on democracy,” said Sullivan, an attorney, who believes the call could violate several laws. “I’m not going to let it go. I want to know who’s paying for it? Who knew about it? Who benefits?”

She said she also plans to engage federal law enforcement in addition to the state attorney general’s office.

Sullivan served as party chair in 2002, when a so-called phone-jamming effort was carried out during a hotly contested U.S. Senate race. Two Republican officials, including the executive director of the state Republican Party and a Republican National Committee operative, were convicted of using computer-generated phone calls to disrupt Democrats’ get-out-the-vote call center operations.  

The campaign of Dean Phillips, the Minnesota congressman challenging Biden for the nomination, said it was not aware of the calls but called it “wildly concerning.”

“Any effort to discourage voters is disgraceful and an unacceptable affront to democracy,” spokesperson Katie Dolan said. “The potential use of AI to manipulate voters is deeply disturbing.”

The Biden campaign, which says it is not involved in the write-in effort in New Hampshire, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did a spokesperson for former President Donald Trump’s campaign.

Patrick Dolan - another Defender leader, a sort of godfather to Eoin O'Donnell's Defender lodge. He acts as another mediator between the Defenders and the committee, though he stays more in the background than Breen does. He makes his money being a slightly more well off tenant farmer

Samuel "Sammy" Gowan - proud member of the growing urban Catholic middle class originally from Co. Armagh. Over 100 artists including Rage Against the Machine co-founders Tom Morello and Zack de la Rocha, along with Boots Riley and Speedy Ortiz, have announced that they are boycotting any concert venue that uses facial recognition technology, citing concerns that the tech infringes on privacy and increases discrimination. 

The boycott, organized by the digital rights advocacy group Fight for the Future, calls for the ban of face-scanning technology at all live events. Several smaller independent concert venues across the country, including the House of Yes in Brooklyn, the Lyric Hyperion in Los Angeles, and Black Cat in D.C., also pledged to not use facial recognition tech for their shows. “Surveillance tech companies are pitching biometric data tools as ‘innovative’ and helpful for increasing efficiency and security. Not only is this false, it’s morally corrupt,” Leila Nashashibi, campaigner at Fight for the Future, said in a statement. “For starters, this technology is so inaccurate that it actually creates more harm and problems than it solves, through misidentification and other technical faultiness. Even scarier, though, is a world in which all facial recognition technology works 100% perfectly – in other words, a world in which privacy is nonexistent, where we’re identified, watched, and surveilled everywhere we go.”

Facial recognition technology at venues has grown increasingly controversial over the past several months, particularly as Madison Square Garden Entertainment and James Dolan have garnered scrutiny for using the tech to kick out lawyers affiliated with ongoing lawsuits against the company. Several attorneys had been removed last year from events at MSG’s venues including its eponymous arena and Radio City Music Hall. Last October, attorney Barbara Hart was removed from Brandi Carlile’s Madison Square Garden Concert because her law firm was litigating against MSG in a class action lawsuit. A film that holds a special place in your heart Honestly, so many do, and for different reasons. I really relate to/get a lot of pleasure out of films about contentedness in solitary situations or isolation (Nomadland, Leave No Trace, Under the Skin), but I also have some really solid favourites that mean a lot to me, and most of those just happen to be Xavier Dolan and Pedro Almodovar's work: Tom at the Farm and Law of Desire especially. Yum.

A film you love that everyone else hates? Taking a leaf from @sitp-recs here and mentioning The Fountain! Also for some reason a lot of people are very anti-Call Me By Your Name, but I think it's an outstanding piece of art.

It was too frequent to be accidental. Every claim was frivolous, most barred by settled, well-established existing law. These were political grievances masquerading as legal claims."

My beef against James Dolan is personal.

James Dolan is an ultimate nepo baby. He inherited the Madison Square Garden Company (which includes ownership of the NY Knicks and NY Rangers) from his father and is a terrible team owner. He meddles in team operations. He makes decisions that alienate players and enrage fans. He is a hostile asshole, petty and mean. James Dolan voted "no'' on Michael Jordan's sale of the Hornets franchise, for no apparent reason. 

My cable provider dropped MSG Network a few years ago because they couldn’t come to agreeable terms, and due to exclusive TV rights I can’t actually watch any of my local teams: NY Knicks, NY Rangers, NY Islanders, NJ Devils, Buffalo Sabres.

Last year he made the decision to hunt down and kick out attorneys—and their entire law firms—from MSG using facial recognition. If a lawyer represented a plaintiff against Dolan, every employee at the firm would be banned from all MSG properties (including Radio City Music Hall, which one mother discovered while trying to take her child to see the Rockettes).

His permit to operate Madison Square Garden at its current site above Penn Station expired this year, but he continues to operate events there and will make no plans to move the now-50-year-old arena to a new location. Thus preventing any of the much-needed improvements to the major transit hub.

He is a consummate villain.

Same goes for Peter Thiel, founder of Palantir and an early investor/board member at Facebook. Palantir worked with Cambridge Analytica, which improperly harvested data from Facebook users, and worked on the digital aspects of Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign. 

He throws millions of dollars of support behind the most odious far-right political candidates. He provided financial backing for a lawsuit that ultimately bankrupted the news website Gawker. He associated with Jeffrey Epstein. He pops up everywhere money and politics and the tech sector intersect, and it’s never good.

What was their childhood/teenage bedroom like?

He didn't have a bedroom of his own as his family lived in a very small 1 room cabin but he did have a space by his bed where he would line up his rock collection and string back together animal skeletons he had found (which was both an enrichment activity and also useful for the family because he's actually quite skilled at it and can usually sell a reconstructed bird skeleton to some passing naturalist if in need of cash). God's most autistic soldier etc

What’s the worst (in their mind) way their current situation could end up?

Definitely that he dies in some really stupid way without accomplishing anything. Although he definitely understands the idea and appeal of martyrdom and would be fully willing to give his life for his cause, for most of the story he's trying to unite the various reformer + resistance groups under the United Irish banner while maintaining his independence and, for much of it, not making much headway, so his absolute worst nightmare is that he dies of [jane austen voice] a trifling cold and then his idiot (in his eyes) subordinates take over and ruin all of his hard work. Yes and no. The nature of late eighteenth century Irish society means he's close with a great number of people, and while those people would probably look in on him if he had a sore head or something I don't know if he considers them friends per se. Probably his best friend is his neighbour Patrick Dolan, who he has a very shall we say implicitly homoerotic relationship with. He's also close with Seamy's mother Maire, his next door neighbour Jack Lohan, and even though they have an extremely difficult relationship which has involved trying to kill each other before he also counts his lieutenant in the Defenders, Blaise Maguire, among his best friends.
