Work-insanity Imagination

Was speaking the One Ring’s incantation in Black Speech while working and it slowly transited to the Hobbit’s Battle of Dol Guldor (which I enjoyed immensely despite the Nazgul somehow being dead again somehow). Then that - in my ever questionable sanity of monologuing to myself - transferred to a purified Ariel encountering the Hylden Lord and spectres of Nine Daemonic Generals to fiendishly mirror the Guardians in the Spectral Realm.

Surrounded until she is saved by an appearing spectral Malek who managed to endure and shape himself and Mortanius. 

Then my mind slipped into something’s else. Can’t remember.

Album top 20 over 2017

Dit jaar een fijn album jaar, dit was in 1967 en 1977 ook al het geval, Er waren zoveel goede albums dat ik dit jaar zelfs een keer afstap van mijn verrukkelijke 15. Wie zegt dat er tegenwoordig geen goede muziek meer wordt gemaakt kan het onderstaande lijstje gerust doornemen

1) The War on Drugs- a deeper understanding. In het begin van deze band (nog met Kurt Vile) had ik het ondenkbaar gevonden dat deze groep bij zo’n breed publiek zou aanslaan maar na het vorige album uit 2014 lost in a dream waren de contouren van een meesterwerk al zichtbaar. Live ook nog eens geweldig, mijn album van het jaar.

2) LCD Soundsystem- American Dream. Op je hoogtepunt stoppen en dan een aantal jaren daarna besluiten toch weer door te gaan en vervolgens zo’n album afleveren. Petje af. Live een absolute sensatie, a must see.

3) Thundercat- Drunk. Een van de beste bassisten uit onze tijd die al bij vele beroemdheden mee speelde waaronder op het album van Kendrick Lamar, to pimp a butterfly uit 2015. Ik had een paar luisterbeurten nodig maar wat een plaat!

4) King Krule- The Ooz. Voor het eerst gezien in het programma van Jools Holland op BBC2. Engelser dan dit gaat het niet worden. Zijn echte naam is Archy Marshall. Z’n muziek kan het beste omschreven worden als punk jazz met hiphop, darkwave en triphop. Biscuit Town de opener op deze LP is 1 van mn favoriete songs dit jaar. Hij is al gevraagd om samen te werken met Kayne West maar moest direct komen opdraven en daar was deze jonge Londenaar niet van gediend. “ Als ik goed ben, komt hij vast nog wel eens bij me terug” man naar mn hart. Ligt nog geregeld op mn draaitafel.

5) J.Bernardt- Running Days.  Het is het solo project van Jinte Deprez van Balthazar, die een pauze inlaste en zo dit debuut album in 2017 kon afleveren. Live in Maastricht en op lowlands gezien dit jaar een overtuigend debuut.

6) Queen of the Stone Age- Villains. Het nieuwe album van QOTSA met Mark Ronson als producer, iets anders dan normaal maar nog steeds de herkenbare sound. Altijd goed.

7) Foo Fighters- Concrete and Gold. Zeker na Nirvana altijd een zwak gehouden voor de Foo Fighters. Dit album klinkt net wat anders dan de gebruikelijke voorgangers. De verrassing vind ik Sunday Rain waarbij Paul McCartney op de drums te horen is.

8) The XX- I see you. In 2009 hadden ze al een prachtig debuut, nu in 2017 komt er iets meer tempo in dankzij Jamie XX. Die ook een waanzinnige remix maakte van on hold en weer te zien in mn lijst songs van het jaar.

9)  Kendrick Lamar- Damn. Wat een grootheid in de hip hop is deze man toch. Ook dit album uit april van dit jaar mag er wezen.

10) My Baby- Prehistoric Rhythm. Een Nederlandse band in mn top 10 dat gebeurd niet ieder jaar. Deze band is het meer dan waard, live een sensatie. Heb een aantal jaren gelden op het hoofdpodium van Into the Great Wide open rond hun concert mogen draaien en sindsdien ben ik ze blijven volgen met deze fantastische elpee in 2017.

11) The Moonlandingz-  Interplanetary Class Classics.

  Deze band bestaat al sinds 2015 en bracht in 2015 en 2016 een EP uit maar dit is hun eigenlijke debuut album. In samenwerking met oa Sean Lennon (juist de zoon van) in New York opgenomen. Krankzinnige lp waarbij niets te dol is, heel electronisch. 

12) Gorillaz- Humanz. De band van Damon Albarn die naast z’n solo werk en Blur ook dit gewoon uitbrengt. Ik ken eigenlijk geen slecht album van de Gorillaz bedenken en ook dit album (naast het prachtige artwork!) is gewoon weer goed. In november ga ik eindelijk naar hun live optreden in de al uitverkochte ziggodome.

13) Phoenix- Ti Amo. Mn zomer lp en dan ook nog in Italie zijn en laat dit album daar nu net over gaan. De klanken brengen mij weer terug in het zonovergoten Toscane

14) Ariel Pink- Dedicated to Bobby Jameson. Een paar jaar geleden op Le Gues Who? Gezien. Ik hou werl van die maffe expirimentele albums, niet voor iedereen maar daarom niet minder vermakelijk.

15) Millionaire- Sciencing. De Belgische band van Tim Vanhamel. Dit jaar live gezien op Best Kept Secret en Into the great wide open. Fantastisch om live te zien en hun album veel gedraaid dit jaar.

16) Soulwax- from DeeWee. Het is alweer lang gelden dat Soulwax onder die naam een album uitbrachten. De Dewaele broers hadden er weer zin in. Gelukkig is er weer nieuw werk. In december ga ik naar hun live concert in TivoliVredenburg. Als ze dan net zo goed zijn als op Best Kept Secret kan mn jaar helemaal niet meer stuk.

17) Warhaus- Warhaus. Na zijn legendarisch debuut in 2016 ; we fucked a flame into being, waar Balthazar’s (wat een vruchtbare band is dit toch, zie ook nr5) Maarten Devoldere samen met z’n vriendin Sylvie Kreusch, een soort Serge Gainsbourg met Jane Birkin maar dan in 2016 en dus nu ook een tweede album al heel snel in 2017. Niet zo goed als de eerste maar nog altijd zeer de moeite waard.

18) Black Grapes- Pop Voodoo. Na de Happy Mondays ging Shaun Rider verder met deze groep samen met Bez richtte hij de groep op, het bleef lang stil tot dit jaar toen ze kwamen met Pop Voodoo, een heerlijk album met alternative funk rock. Dit keer nam Shaun Rider het samen met Kermit op (nee niet de kikker)

19)  Fleet Foxes- Crack up. Na hun prachtig titelloze debuut  en Helplessness Blues uit alweer 2011 werd eerst een studie afgemaakt voordat dit album het levenslicht zag. Wederom zeer herkenbaar Fleet Foxes, in de donkere maanden een prachtig album bij de open haard.

20) Arcade Fire- Everything Now. Ieder album van deze band staat altijd vast bovenaan in mn lijst. Nu werd er een disco achtig uitstapje gemaakt. Fijn album maar in mijn ogen mist het de diepgang van de vorige albums. Live eindelijk gezien dit jaar op Best Kept Secret met een prachtig concert.

Het einde van de lijst, nee, ik moet toch nog wat tips vermelden zoveel goede albums werden er dit jaar gemaakt. Bubbeling under;

When I was younger, I wanted to be an event planner but my dominant left brainedness which sought out the traditional routes to stability/prestige/money wouldn't allow it.  Now I realize that although the journey may take a little longer, you can attain those things while doing the things you love, which is totally okay as life is about the LONG game. Additionally, what you value in life also changes so there's another case for following your passions.  Even with that said, I'm not making any career changes, but I'm glad that as a new mom, I will have opportunities that will allow my suppressed creativity to shine through occasionally. 

I am super pleased with how Arielle's DOL turned out without spending too much time/money/stress, and I'm so glad that my friend and photographer Julie was able to capture Arielle's special day.  

W/that, I'd like to share a few of my planning tips: 

Decorate w/things you have around your house - which is an excuse to have cute home decor items - and it will help you cut costs significantly. 95% of the things I had at the party were from our home, majority of it from Arielle's nursery (wall decor, playmat, playpen, toys, picture frames, etc.)

Some projects are not worth #diy for the effort but some totally are.  These doljabi containers took 3 minutes to make and they look almost as nice as the photoshopped labels on Etsy. I also made the dolgoims which is debatedly "worth the effort" but after finding out that the cute ones go for nearly $200, I was willing to put in the 3hrs (by cheating w/small cans, large limabeans, and bodyless zodiac animal).  It definitely looked amateur but they served their purpose.  

Try to see if you can combine the functions of some of the things you need, and you will save money.  For example, I needed seating place cards and doljabi raffle tickets so I decided to write names on a leaf that served those functions, in addition to being a pretty accent by the menu.  

Ask friends to see if there are things you can borrow.  All doljabi items courtesy of amigas.  Btw, YAAAAAASSS!!! Arielle picked the spatula!!! She's going to be a chef guys!!!  That’s my feet jumping for joy! ;) 

Prioritize the things you need to do once you get to the venue if you only have a limited time.  I only had one hour to decorate the whole space, and even w/the help of Chris and Jess, I wasn't able to do everything I wanted to.  Actual party logistic items (set place cards, take out cake out of box) must get done first BEFORE decor .  No one will care about the perfect placement of the flowers or the extra pretty balloon but me.

Finally enjoy yourself!  Yeah I wish I could have been able to space out certain things I wanted to or work on a few other decoratons but as soon as my first guests arrived, I dropped the double sided tape, put my host face on, got myself a drink, and truly enjoyed the fact that my little one was turning a whopping ONE!  #TimeFlies #MomToAToddler #HolyCrap

One last thing!  My good friend Sang helped me create this cute little travel map of the places that Arielle has been (Babygirl has already been on 20 flights in her first year)!  The picture doesn’t do it justice but it was a darling project!

I like this song in any fashion for them, but this duet was SO perfect and was actually part of the reason I started making this playlist in the first place.

This is another one of my big defining songs for them, just about... their whole relationship, Ana’s relationship with Dol Arrah, and the feeling of something bittersweet and small in the midst of something much larger.

Wake Me Up // Boyce Ave

I like this song for them just at the end of their relationship. In particular, “feeling my way through the darkness/guided by a beating heart” makes me think of them each being drawn to help Felicia and Ivona after Ana leaves.

The Light // Sara Bareilles

This is kind of my “happy ending/nobody dies” AU, where things were a little different, and they were able to trust in each other and go forward together (and I guess pick up a tiefling along the way? Shhhh don’t worry it works out and they are all a cute family together)

So Close // Jon McLaughlin

Enchanted is a masterpiece and applying this song to them makes me cry.

How // Regina Spektor

I don’t usually like doubling up on artists on a playlist, but I stumbled across this track and loved it too much to give it up. A final song, for Ana, and where she is now. A little sad, a little hopeful.
