Dog for adoption in South/Central Texas. Can transport to AUSTIN TX or San Antonio.

2months ago, a sweet, timid dog showed up at my house. She was thin, but clean, recently had some puppies. Our local shelter has a euthanasia rate of 75%, so instead of taking her to the shelter, I decided to foster her while searching for her owners. A well-behaved houstrained dog like this was so easy to foster. After two months searching, no owners have been located. I named her Sombra (which is Spanish for "shadow") bc she's is always right behind me like a shadow. She has this fantastic personality that is discreet & low-key but also happy-go-lucky. She's up for anything.

A 50lb bully mutt is not easy to re-home here in the Rio Grande Valley, so I'm very open to meeting an adopter in the Austin area. Please share to help find Sombra a companion home where she can flourish.

More About Sombra:

Walks fabulously on the leash with a flat collar, she doesn't pull towards people or other dogs. Sombra will pull towards ducks and is learning to ignore them.

She doesn't bark at people or animals, Sombra is a very quiet dog. I've only heard her boof once to wake me up when someone walked through the backyard in the middle of the night. Sombra is not destructive in the home and has never had any accidents, she only goes potty outdoors.

She adapts to the activity level you want. Sombra happily lounges at home alone during my busy days. Sombra is equally happy hiking for miles. I have trained her to rollerblade with me, she runs next to me easily and has no problem passing other people and dogs on crowded trails. With conditioning, she would be great for distance jogging or rollerjoring.

Sombra is gentle and playful with dogs and cats. She's neutral upon introduction, once she familiarizes she is easygoing and happy to play or chill, she respects thier body language. Sombra is most at-ease & confident when there's another dog around who can set an example.

We are working on obedience and recall, so outdoors she does need to be on a leash unless in fenced area. If there's critters around, she chases but doesn't hyperfocus/hunt critters. Because she is so great with my housecats, I think she could be habituated to other small housepets.

Did I mention she’s fantastic with cats and dogs? It’s especially fun to watch her play with kitties, very cute.

Sombra is neutral with new people, she gives them space and happily observes them from a distance. If you let her observe you giving attention to another dog, she quickly understands you're a friend, and if you give her some treats, instantly she's your best friend. Sombra is very food motivated.

Sombra has been introduced to kids and babies with no issues, but she hasn't spent extended time with them.

Weighing only about 48lbs, this petite girl has had rough start in life. My wish for Ellie is that she finds a best friend. That whoever adopts her wants to have her around. She really wants to be with her person or people. Backyards are nice, they are convenient places to pee and poo and can provide a safe place to play. That said, a dog left in a fenced yard to bark and yip and get frustrated trying to find ways to entertain themselves is a lonely, sad dog. Being chained to a yard alone is Ellie's past. While I'm fostering Ellie I take her with me wherever I can. We did about a 3 mile walk this morning. We are now sitting at an outdoor cafe. There are birds, crumbs on the ground, people coming and going and an occasional dog. Her job, boring as it might seem, hard as it might be for this 2 year old, is to remain relaxed and calm here with me. I want her to be someone's trusted friend. I want her to know when to be calm and when it's okay to play and be silly. I want her to have real world coping skills so that she is welcome to go anywhere with her human. This is my dream for Ellie. She is naturally very chill in a busy city environment. She does get excited to see other potential dog play mates. Echo is a sweet rescue German Shepherd who is available for adoption in Raleigh, NC and surrounding cities and states. We have been fostering Echo for a few months now and have been working with her, but she needs a new forever home now who can give her the one-on-one training and love she needs. Echo is three to four years old and 58lbs. She is gaining weight but needs to definitely continue with the gain until she is at a healthy weight. She is NOT spayed, and will come with a spay contract so she is not used to breed. She is high energy but has somewhat of an off switch. She is crate trained and house trained. Echo can be reactive with other dogs, and has been around my female dogs a majority of the time, including a shih-tzu. She has gotten along with them for the most part, but she is dominant over other dogs and would most likely do better as the only dog or may be able to live with a neutered male dog. she has a high prey drive and should not be around cats. She has been around them before but I do not believe it would be safe to give her free reign around a cat. She has been around young children on leash and did very well, and was very calm, but because of her high energy, I believe it would be better for her to live with older children. She wants to be with you and relax with you, but will lay quietly in her crate while you work. But, like most rescue dogs, she does have her problems. She is heartworm positive, and will come with her heartguard treatment. She needs an EXPERIENCED GSD owner who is familiar with the attitudes and training of German Shepherds. We will be screening potential adopters, and will require a home check. She needs a fenced in yard and must be watched when outside as she digs. She needs someone to give her a lot of time, love, and training to help her with her past neglect.
