Shenanigans
Farm-wise, the last 24 hours have been a little. Fraught.
Last evening I went out around 8:30 to walk dogs and deal with chickens. Then new young hens need to be pinioned, ie have the flight feathers on one wings cut short to keep them from flying into the apple tree every night. I will need to keep them confined to the coop area for a while until they learn to lay their eggs in the nestboxes. A whole flock of hens hiding eggs all over the yard and around the barn would not be useful.
I had trapped two of the white ones in a dog kennel around dusk, so I started with them. I picked up the first one (lovely in the silvery moonlight) and she SCREAMED like she was being murdered. Rose-pup was on a leash standing beside me, very puzzled. I knelt down and carefully clipped the wing feathers, then put the squawking hen into the coop in a nice, clean nestbox full of hay. Enjoy!! The second hen was inside a dogbox in the kennel. I had to get down on my knees and reach w-a-y back to the back of the box to grab her, whereupon she SCREAMED. yada yada. I tried to pull her out, only to find that a lock of my hair near my temple had gotten hooked on a little uneven edge on the dog box. [LOUD SCREAMING] I'm kneeling in dirt, can't let go of the bird, had to contort myself to get my other hand up to disentangle the hair. Rosalie was looking Concerned™, but sticking right next to me. I pinion the bird and put her in the coop. Rosalie is dogging my heels, which is good, but also, a gray dog in low light is very hard to see.
I shook one low limb of the apple tree, dislodging two more hens. They flapped angrily down into the chicken run, and tried like the dickens to get away from me. Cue a bumbling low-speed chase while I pursue horrified hens around and around the chicken run and try to avoid stepping on an invisible dog. There was language. Rosalie decided to wait outside the run.
When I finally had four hens pinioned and settled, I went out of the run and started looking for Rosalie. She was standing in a shadow in the dappled moonlight. Fortunately, she came when I called her. "Here I am!" says the invisible beast.
Then she, Lady, Rocky, and I headed out to the far pasture for a stroll. And a bit of a jog. I Hate Jogging, and never let anyone see me doing it, but in bright moonlight on a crisp fall evening it wasn't so bad. Rosalie seemed to be paying attention to Lady and taking some dog-behavior cues from her, which is a good start. It was lovely, really.
This morning, when I was in town putting up artwork, my husband called me. He had taken her out for a mid-morning potty break, and after puttering around the yard a little, she suddenly bolted for the lane. Gone like a flash. He frantically pursued her, on foot and eventually in his truck. She ran almost a mile south along the road, turned and start back north, let him get n-e-a-r-l-y within touching distance several times, then vanished into thick woods half a mile from our house.
I won't detail all the searching that Husband and I - and Roommate - and Roommate's hound dog - went through during the day. Suffice it to say that when Husband finally located her, taken inside by a neighbor, it was 3 in the afternoon. Everybody's a little shaken and upset. Husband is out buying a very smol halter for her, since her extremely narrow head lets her 'slip' her collar too easily.
This Small Criminal Thought She Could Track Her Girl Down. But the Girl is 80 miles away at College.

This will probably out what state I'm from, but I love being able to say "oi, have you got a ripstick in the dogbox? Old mate next door's is cactus, and he'll probably chip in a slab of tinnys if you can give him a lend of one" and know that I would make sense to most people.

#and yeah. the push for ‘carbon neutral’ development by minimizing parking and creating bike lanes while reducing metro#drives me bonkers mad. why tf would you build more housing like this. making the city more actively hostile to navigate for everyone
Money. It’s literally fucking money. The metro side is handled by the govt (down here at least) so developers hoover up farmland, (sit on it for fuckin’ ever, and parcel it out at premium prices) and go “ah mang not our probs, we don’t do that part” and shove the traffic of 5,000 houses on a single dirt road that was originally built for ol’ mate and his sunday fucking market fruit cart. Meanwhile their apartment division claims “greener initiatives” by putting in less parking when what they really mean is “We can fit more dogbox apartments where those parking spots would have been fucking scoooooooooooooore”
I mean, it's great that the "what about emergency vehicle access?" hack is so effective when pointing out the deficiencies of proposals for walkable communities, but it kind of burns my ass that you need to take that approach in the first place. I don't know how many conversations about communities planning I've seen that go like this:
Walkable communities advocate: Here's a plan for a walkable community in which only public transit will be permitted – no personal vehicles of any kind will be allowed.
Disability advocate: What about access for physically disabled people? If your options are public transit or the sidewalk and literally nothing else, any disabled person whose needs aren't fully served 100% of the time by your favoured public transit framework is fucked, and there's no such thing as a perfect public transit framework.
Walkable communities advocate, whose brain shut down the moment they heard the word "disabled" and didn't process anything past that point: Oh, you silly cripple, the term "walkable community" doesn't mean you're only allowed to walk! How quaint.
I guess pointing out "well, if only public transit is accommodated, how are firefighters and paramedics supposed to access emergencies?" works because now they can imagine themselves being affected!

Little Brown
WELL, things have been dramatic in the chicken run this last week. Thursday night around 3:30 am I heard a frightened squawk. I jumped out of bed already running, collected Lady and a stout walking stick, and charged out the door.
Little Brown was flopped bonelessly in front of the repurposed dogbox she and the chicks sleep in. A possum had climbed up and over the chainlink fence to try to get a chicken dinner. It was IN the box, snarling in a corner, while the chicks were peeping frantically but too frightened to come out. Chickens can't see in the dark at ALL (unlike me) and they are unable to do much to save themselves if something attacks at night.
I folded Little Brown back into chicken shape (first rule for a shocky critter, gently put them back into a comfortable position.) I reached, very unhappily, unto the box, and scooped frightened chicks out. My husband showed up at this point with a 22 and dispatched the possum. A careful check of Little Brown revealed that she had quite a few feathers missing and some scrapes and scratches - but no serious injuries visible. One chick had been killed.
With the box emptied of vermin, I settled her back inside with the chicks. They were all peeping in confusion, but settled back down very quickly.
The next day the chicks were up and about as normal, but she wouldn't leave her nest. Shock, or an internal injury, had left her pretty much ready to lie down and die. I tried setting her in the sun, dipping her beak very gently in the water in her dish, offering delicious strawberries. Nope.
Saturday we asked my son's roommate for help. With all the medical care I've given mammals, I've never had to take care of an injured bird like this. As a falconer, he was able to show us how to gently open her beak, and we got a couple syringes of milk-and-almond-flour gruel into her.
The calories and hydration from that jarred her back into the land of the living. When we tried to give her more on Sunday, she struggled so heartily that we pronounced her able to feed on her own. As any farmer or vet can tell you, a patient that suddenly starts fighting their medical care is beginning to feel better!
There is a tarp securely strapped over the top of the enclosure. She is moving slowly, but eating her feed and taking care of the chicks. Whew.

Good stuff! I'm all for problematizing (in a good way!) the whole diesel vs steamies dynamic. No need to shy away from the fact that the railway powers that be heavily promoted diesel as the way of the future and set up an inter-vehicle conflict that at the moment, didn't seem to matter because the steamies would all be dead and was no longer their problem; the real nettle to grasp is that it didn't go down so neatly for all kinds of reasons, namely that the diesels would soon be disabused of the notion they were tricked into thinking that things were going to be the way they were forever with them in charge... because ultimately, no engine, diesel, steam or electric, is above the human railway powers that ran things.
And its' the railway powers that decide which engines are Really Useful.
So it would really mess with the diesels that only a few short years after intro, many unsuccessful diesels would be withdrawn and replaced...
...and then there's the fact that diesels get scrapped as well, and continue to get scrapped into the present day.
Depending on how you headcanon the personhood, status and preservation of living engines generally in your setting, it may mess with the heads of many diesels that did survive past the withdrawal of certain classes... that they aren't inherently protected from scrapping by virtue of the fact they aren't rare pieces of history or engineering marvels of another time.
It could create resentment, or it could create terrible fear generally, even into preservation; since the steamies may not be willing to forgive the arrogance of an earlier generation of diesels.
Throw in the introduction of electrics into the mix and this turns into an odd sort of deja vu, where diesels feel like they will be eclipsed and replaced en total. Especially if diesels are taken off passenger work in favor of electric trains as lines are electrified.
(Though that can seriously depend on when in your setting they were introduced. Electric engines were introduced onto the VR from 1919 onwards on the surburban rail routes. They did replace steam engines but steam was still used until the introduction of diesels proper. These electrics, the early Tait "dogboxes", were often former wooden rail coaches that were given pantographs and motors. So this can imply a more complicated relationship with steamies than a simple "steam vs spark" conflict suggests.)
OK, time for a Railway Series headcanon
Meme for attention, full headcanon after the break. TL;DR BR diesels and electrics would have been spoonfed anti-steam propaganda and would have very quickly gotten a dose of reality in the 1970s
OK, so, the TTTE/RWS fandom as a whole seems to be ambivelant at best about diesel and electric locomotives, and at worst sees anything that isn't powered by steam as the spawn of satan, and sometimes as someone who's a railfan in general beyond the fandom I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall anytime I wanna info dump about diesel locomotives. personally I find this a huge shame as the history of the modernisation plan and post-68 BR is fascinating in its own right.
the thing that grinds my gears is the perception of the fandom seems to be that all diesels and electrics are evil because reasons, and often completely ignors that the Rev. W. Awdry, god rest his soul, was unashamedly biased against modern traction, which leads to some missed opportunites in further fleshing out the universe whilst also turning modern traction into simply the new generation of engines. It's like this, as soon as 1955 rolled around BR managment was firmly set against steam, just about every bit of media they put out advertising their services used the shiny new diesels and electrics whilst referring to steam negatively, the locomotives own managers saw them as old technology that was dead in the water, and only being kept around until their replacements rolled up.
It's a logical assumption that the diesels would have been spoon fed this anti-steam propaganda before they had even turned a wheel, they would have been elitist and looked down on steam because from the moment of conciousness they would have been told that they were the future. Just think about the sort of superiority complex that would give an engine.
Cue the 1970s.
No sooner had steam been relegated to the history books than BR started the withdrawel of the less succesful pilot scheme locomotives (classes 15, 16, 17, 21, 23, 28), the Western Region diesel hydraulics (classes 14, 22, 35, 42, 52) and the 1500v-DC Woodhead electrics (classes 76 & 77).
just imagine the effect seeing locomotives which ten years earlier been labelled as part of the future being withdrawn en-masswould have on many still relatively young and naive diesel and electric locomotives. I can very easily see the remaining classes shift from an elitist "we are revolutionary" mindset to a jaded "we are just cogs in a machine who will be replaced the moment better comes along", which would be further reenforced not only with the introduction of the class 56 to replace 20s and 37s on the heaviest freight trains, but with the general slipping of standards as trains go for longer between cleaning, and some locomotive even being left out of repaints during the introduction of TOPS.
I see it as a period that has a lot of untapped story pottential for more mature subjects involving regret and greif
A now non-standard diesel being suddenly withdrawn and wondering what they did wrong after being told for so many years that they were the future of the railways
Think about how many surviving 1st gen diesels would back on the late-50s and 1960s with shame at their own arrogance and naivety, and even coming to regret their attitude towards the older steam locomotives and missing out on the chance to be properly shown the ropes as a result.
What about the shiny new class 56s, HSTs, and 58s having any sense of elitism being stomped out by the older first gen diesel locomotives, and being told the story of the beeching cuts and the cull of the 70s to drive some humility into them.
Maybe into the 90s and 2000s the surviving 1st gen diesels would come to view the mainline registered steam locomotives with respect and reverence.
I have a story idea which I may or may not write involving a diesel locomotives which, upon withdrawel and preservation, would by chance be sent to a railway that also had a steam engine that they worked alongside in the 60s. They would seek to make ammends for their attitude when younger, only to find out that the steam engine simple isn't willing to listen to what they would have to say, and the diesel locomotive coming to terms with the fact that an apology given does not mean an apology accepted, and sometimes you simply won't get the closure you were looking for.
