CHIHUAHUA: The Official Dog of Mardi Gras
My name is Boudreaux and I’m a Mardi Gras Chihuahua. I live in Uptown New Orleans and I have friends all over the world. They think that I am lucky to live in New Orleans, because the king cake is tasty and the Mardi Gras season seems to last forever.
My friends come to visit at the same time every year. We like to wear costumes and dress up real crazy. We look so cute and have our pictures taken by people. We play so hard all day then at night we get very sleepy.
My little brother is Thibodaux and he loves to dress up, too. He lives in the Marigny and he likes to dress up for his friends. His friends love to visit and dance to Broadway show tunes. Thibodaux and his buddies love to be in the parades. Their costumes are so glitzy and sparkle in the flambeau lights. They wear lots of boa feathers and even fishnet stockings But Thibodaux is my brother and I love him just the same, even when he tries to eat my food. e can be such a pain. He loves Mardi Gras and to be with all his buddies. Mardi Gras puts a smile on his face and a gleam in his eyes.
I have a sister named Lacey who lives in Mid City. While I am a small Chihuahua, Lacey is really itty bitty. She acts like a princess in her beautiful silk costume. She always makes a grand entrance when arriving in any room. She has dozens of Chihuahuas who lineup for her attention. Lacey loves to be noticed and to be hugged by everyone. She’s always very happy and loves to be held. Mardi Gras is the time of the year Lacey loves the most
All the Mardi Gras Chihuahuas get together on Mardi Gras day. We can’t wait to wear our costumes and be in the Krewe of Barkus parade. We walk along the parade route and all the people cheer. They hand us doggy treats and tell us we look so cute.
Maybe this year I’ll meet some new friends. And we can become best friends only like Chi doggies can be. All of us will have on beautiful costumes with colors so bright. We’ll have fun all Mardi Gras day and then go to sleep late at night.

Mardi Gras Merfolk
Aquatic costumes and parade floats of "Princess and the Frog" (2009)
How does that guy in the octopus costume operate those "tentacles?" The only theories I can offer are:
It's a sophisticated costume, like the "Dancing Pig" of 1907, with a pulley system or something inside.
He's a sideshow performer who actually was born with eight arms
There are other people in that costume with him

Krewe of Barkus
You looking at me? T here really is a Krewe of Barkus, a dog Mardi Gras parade. It usually rolls on the Sunday before MardiGras. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen maybe a thousand dogs milling around in a relatively small location. The play, bark, meet other dogs and pose for treats. I think there are some many dogs that intimidate each other because is very little barking in anger, mostly…

2023 Parade – Barkus
Ok... Mardi Gras just passed on February 21st and for those who don't know, New Orleans is my hometown. I've had to explain that this is a real thing back home to at least a hundred motherfuckers at work, in my circle of idiot friends, etc.. Now I'm putting this in front of the eyes of all y'all simply for shits and giggles... And the Mardi Gras dog costumes are goddamn adorable.

i really want to tie stuff in because it a hundred percent is a rite of conspicuous consumption in my opinion when you bend the rules to fuse conspiuous consumption and conspicuous display into rites that are about owning things and now exactly buying things bc throws are free but it's all tied together. but it's sooo tonally different from everything else. do you think 1 paragraph about capitalism and the environment will look out of place
jstor fetch me a paper about the environmental impacts of mardi gras. im onto something here
#also there were no papers and im using a news article/press release bc i needed a statistic abt trash left from mardi gras#but actually like someone needs to get on with writing a paper abt this. if i ever had a prompt for a class that i could tie to this i woul#write a whole thing for it. i think i could.#idk. i went to mardi gras years ago w my dad's family and brought home like 20 pounds of beads. plus some stuffed animals#and first of all i will never forget that cheap plastic smell#but like. i spent the next 4-5 years trying to get rid of the beads once i realized hey im stuck with all these. what will i use them for#and i still have a few but i like the ones i kept#and like i caught a dog toy at iris and brought it back for my dog who destroyed it in like 2 weeks even though shes not a toy destroyer#it was like the fast fashion of dog toys.#and theres something there that im not sure how to get at (especially in a paper thats supposed to just be abt examples of different types#of rites that occur in festivals) about cheaply made goods that are just meant to be thrown away#that oly exist for the spectacle of catching them#that clog sewers for months afterwards with toxic chemicals#not to mention the labor practices for whoever is making these beads and toys and plastic toilets!#im actually super invested in this now. but i dont know what to do abt it#become an enst major and write a thesis about it???? <- joking#talkin
