The show's international cast includes Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Lucas Lynggaard Tonnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, José Pimentao, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards, Alexandre Willaume and Anton Lesser, among others. All the actors will speak in their mother tongue in the series, which was conceived from the start as a multi-lingual drama.
Emily Beecham Discusses New Mystery Series 1899 From The Creators Of Dark – Exclusive Interview
"On set, all of the actors can speak English, so the predominant language is English," she says. "It’s so amazing to hear the read-through, it sounded quite beautiful and to hear the characters interacting, or struggling to. It brings a really interesting feel to it." Any temptation to dust off language skills of her own? "Alas, I’m quite rubbish! I’ve been learning German, but everybody speaks good English! I'll pretend to myself that I can actually speak it better than I can, but I do really want to put time into learning it."
1899 also offers her the opportunity to work with some very new technology, with the show's creators spearheading the construction of a giant LED Volume of the sort that has been used for series such as The Mandalorian. According to Beecham, it offers a new layer of reality to the job. "We’re shooting on a ship and it gives you seasickness. Well, not that bad, but you get that feeling like you’re moving, which is so useful. It’s like being in a virtual reality world, that stage, like a giant playground, it’s fun!" It's also highly adaptable, and made for a big change in the shooting schedule: "The entire set can rotate. Because to change the camera angle, you can’t move the giant LED screens, so the set moves instead, and it’s very quick, so in between takes normally you wait hours to change everything and here you have none of that, it just moves. The first time I went on it, it felt like a stage, but you soon get rid of that because stage acting is very different. It’s quite nice, it feels like a stage in the best way."
‘1899’ First Interviews: Netflix & The Creators Of ‘Dark’ Talk Building Europe’s Largest Virtual Production Stage To Shoot Ambitious Multilingual Series
The team also shot plenty of footage on the ocean, and have built a significant physical set for their crucial location – the ship – at the Babelsberg facility. It has been an exhaustive prep process.
“You literally take post-production and make it pre-production,” Odar adds. “Everything has to be decided beforehand, you have to create it, build it, so it’s all ready to shoot in camera. You don’t use any green screen, ideally. I hate green screen, you need so much imagination, and the actors do too. Having it [the location] already on set is a big benefit. And then in the editing you already have it all there.”

I’m looking forward to 1899 but also am suspicious of how the show emphasizes how all their actors will be speaking their native language when the actress from Hong Kong is dressed in a kimono.

Do the Volturi sound like the actors/actresses you fancast them as, or do they actually sound different in your head when you write? For some reason, Marcus sounds like Mufasa, Caius sounds like Scar, and good god, Aro unfortunately sounds like Yzma when I read.
Good morning dearest Anonymous. This gave me a good chuckle this wonderful Tuesday, for I instantly got the the image of Caius singing "Be prepared" in my mind while Aro is yelling "Pull the lever Renata!".
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢 & 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬
The Royals
𝐀𝐫𝐨: I have previously described Aro's voice here. In general I believe him to have quite a pleasant voice, though it can be quite threatening when he wants to. I believe it is difficult to pinpoint and accent when it comes to Aro, he sounds like he could be from anywhere in the world.
𝐂𝐚𝐢𝐮𝐬: I have previously described Caius' voice here. In general I do not think my Fancasts voice fits entirely; Caius does not have an English accent. Much like Aro it can be difficult to pin point where he is from, he is quite fond of speaking in his long gone mother tongue to confuse visitors and strangers.
𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐬: I have previously described Marcus' voice here. Honestly the Mufasa comparison from dear Anonymous has the right associations for me; regal, deep and rich. My fancasts tone does not have the correct weight to it, Tamino has a very nice voice though.
𝐒𝐮𝐥𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚: Her voice and tone can come off as quite posh. Sounds like someone who has their affairs in order but still is pleasant to talk to. Like Felix she was Roman and has stayed in Italy the last thousands of years, she has a softer accent derived from her Latin days when she talks; a lot of strong R’s.
𝐀𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐚: Her tone and delivery can almost come off as a bit crass, she is not as political as Sulpicia is; though she still tries to keep a friendly lilt to her voice. I headcanon that Athenodora is from Vučedol culture, which corresponds to areas around the Balkans; Athenodora is specifically from around Croatia. This means she was speaking a form of Proto-Balto-Slavic language, these days people would say Athenodora has a Chakavian accent.
𝐃𝐢𝐝𝐲𝐦𝐞: She had a very sweet voice, that almost could come off as slightly annoying when she was in a bad mood. Very much insisted on speaking her and her brothers language when she wanted to be secretive.
The Guard
𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢: I have previously described Demetri's voice here. Honestly Demetri does not sound like his fancasts voice, Aneurin has a Welsh accent after all. The pitch is similar, but over all Demetri's voice is smoother and he has a distinct Greek accent.
𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐱: I have previously described Felix's voice here. Honestly this is one of the instances where the fancast matches my idea of Felix very well. This is what Matteo Martari sounds like speaking Italian. It is pretty damn close to what I hear in my head.
𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐞: I have previously described Jane's voice here. In general her voice can have a childlike quality to it, but from time to time there is this steel and grit to it; really makes it clear that she is in fact over a thousand years old.
𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐜: Much like his sister he does have that softer tone of childhood, I always imagined him to have just gone through the voice change of puberty so he sounds young but more like a teenager. He has that rasp to it that boys of that age tend to have right before settling into their adult voice.
𝐇𝐞𝐢𝐝𝐢: She sounds almost identical to my fancast, Gemma Chan's voice is just so beautiful and eloquent. While I do think her accent is more neutral and not so English, more of gentle German accent there if anything.
𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐚: I have previously described Renata's voice here. In general I think her fancast is quite spot on actually, its deeper than you might expect; contrasting with her sweet face.
𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧: In fact is from a specific part of The Roman Empire, Roman Gaul where they still spoke Gaulish; a Celtic language. So you will hear certain characteristics from that in her tone of voice, here is a video detailing pronunciation. In general Corin comes off as quite icy when you don't know her well, but when she warms up she sounds quite friendly.
𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐨: Since Santiago hails from Brazil he has a distinct Brazilian-Portuguese flavor to the way he speaks. Specifically he is from the northern parts known for a Sweet and Musical way of speaking. You can still hear this in his voice today, Santiago sounds very easygoing and friendly.
𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐨𝐧: His voice is similar to his fancast Bill Skarsgård's voice, though slightly deeper and rougher. Now Swedish is a pitch language so it goes low, high, low or high, low, high, low. Which is why some might say it sounds like they are singing, Afton very much has a soft Swedish accent.
𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐚: The only way I can describe Chelsea's voice is pleasant and warm. She also has a bit of an accent, having kept some of those unique quirks from the Mycenaean Greek she grew up with. There is something exceptionally feminine about Chelsea, a beautiful voice.

summary :      a  collection  of  the  cultural  influences  on  the  character  of  taliesin  lestrange,  including  a  look  at  the  three  lestrange  bloodlines,  welsh  language,  food,  holidays,  and  and  legends        tagging :        @burialnetwork   (  task 003  )
bloodlines.           there  are  three  primary  bloodlines  of  the  lestrange  family.  the  family  is  originally  from  the  burgundy  region  of  france,  with  the  cyrille  and  corvus  bloodlines  still  calling  the  country  home.  however,  at  some  point  a  portion  of  the  family  migrated  to  wales.  this  line  was  previously  referred  to  simply  as  the  welsh  line,  but  after  taliesin’s  great  grandfather’s  time  as  minister  of  magic  became  known  as  the  radolphus  bloodline.  the  radolphus  bloodline  is,  despite  the  amount  of  time  they  have  been  located  in  wales,  still  close  with  their  french  cousins,  although  culturally  they  are  far  more  welsh  than  french,  as  can  be  seen  in  how  they  pick  their  names.  radolphus  lestrange  children are  often  gifted  traditional  welsh  names.  taliesin’s  own  name  is  a  reflection  of  this  practice,  named  after  a  legendary  wizard  from  wales,  and  his  middle  name,  cadfael,  being  both  the  name  of  his  uncle  and  meaning   battle  prince   in  welsh.
language.           taliesin  grew  up  speaking  both  english  and  welsh,  which  his  father  taught  him.  in  the  lestrange  household,  english  was  the  casual  and  common  language,  partially  due  to  the  fact  that  dorthea  was  not  fluent,  though  she  had  picked  up  aspects  of  it  over  the  years.  welsh  was  often  reserved  for  serious  and  likely  tense  exchanges  between  aneurin  and  taliesin.  in  fact,  it  was  in  welsh  that  taliesin  was  reprimanded  for  the  use  of  the  s-word.  for  this  reason,  welsh  is  a  much  more  emotionally  charged  language  for  him,  and  is  often  what  he’ll  turn  to  to  express  anger  or  frustration.  for  example,  an  exclamation  of  pain  is  more  likely  to  be   cachi   than  fuck.  likewise,  if  he  is  with  someone  who  also  speaks  welsh,  he  will  instinctively  switch  to  welsh  if  the  conversation  grows  tense.
food.          when  taliesin  taught  himself  to  cook,  he  often  turned  to  traditional  recipes.  part  of  this  was  due  to  the  number  of  dishes  he  could  think  of  that  did  not  require  the  delicate  touch  of  steady  hands,  but  also  because  it  provided  a  comfort,  a  piece  of  home  he  could  make  himself  while  he  was  at  the  clinic.  cawl  and  rarebit  are  two  of  his  favorites,  especially  in  the  winter.  he’s  tried  his  hand  at  making  bara  brith  but  has  learned  that  baking  does  require  more  exact  measurements,  though  pice  ar  y  maen  is  something  he  can  manage  if  he  is  careful.
holidays.          instead  of  halloween  or  samhain,  taliesin  grew  up  celebrating  nos  calan  gaeaf  and  calan  gaef  on  october  31st  and  november  1st  respectively.  within  the  lestrange  household,  officially,  it  was  little  more  than  a  time  for  family  to  gather  together  for  a  meal,  with  treats  for  the  children  and  some  caution  extended  due  to  the  fact  that  the  distance  between  life  and  death  was  slimmer.  both  dorthea  and  aneurin  had  little  time  for  what  they  saw  as  the  more  lowbrow  traditions  the  surrounded  the  holiday,  however  that did  not  mean  that  taliesin  never  experienced  them.  a  practice  of  having  a  bonfire  on  nos  calan  gaeaf  is  common  and  is  often  accompanied  with  a  divination  practice  in  which  participants  write  their  name  on  a  stone  and  leave  it  in  the  fire.  if  your  stone  was  not  found  the  next  day,  it  meant  you  would  die  within  the  year.  older  cousins  of  taliesin,  morys,  rhydian,  and  aerona,   saw  this  as  a  perfect  opportunity  to  mess  with  the  younger  boy.  they  snuck  off  to  have  their  own  bonfire  several  years,  over  which  they  would  frighten  him  with  stories  of  yr  hwch  ddu  gwta,  reminding  him  that  they  had  to  get  home  before  the  fire  burned  out  or  the  spirit  would  eat  their  souls.  the  practice  continued  in  secret  among  the  cousins  for  several  years,  until  taliesin  was  nine  and  morys  thought  it  would  be  funny  to  remove  taliesin’s  rock  before  he  was  able  to  check  for  it  the  next  day.  taliesin,  convinced  of  his  own  imminent  death,  spilled  the  secret  of  the  yearly  bonfire  to  his  mother.
legends.           as  a  curious  and  adventurous  child,  it  makes  sense  that  taliesin  grew  up  enjoying  stories  of  the  fantastic.  one  such  story  was  of  the  merlin,  morgan  le  fay,  and  their  involvement  in  the  court  of  king  arthur.  knights  being  aided  by  magic  was  perfect  to  capture  the  young  boy’s  attention.  however,  due  to  growing  up  in  wales,  additional  characters  appeared  in  the  versions  taliesin  was  told  or  read.  besides  that,  tales  of  specifically  welsh  magical  exploits  were  also  his  to  enjoy.  giants  like  ysbaddaden,  the  wizards  gwydion  and  math,  and  others,  all  captured  taliesin’s  imagination.  his  own  namesake  even  appeared  a  few  times.  he  enjoyed  them  to  the  point  of  naming  his  pet,  an  eagle-owl  gifted  to  him  on  his  eleventh  birthday   (   with  the  assumption  that  it  would  help  him  keep  in  touch  from  hogwarts,  but  ended  up  serving  the  same  purpose  from  a  different  location   ),    eliwlod,    after  the  nephew  of  king  arthur  who  was  likely  an  animagus,  as  he  was  known  to  have  the  ability  to  turn  into  a  raptor.

welsh love: aneurin barnard
AN// hello loves!! my first aneurin imagine because i love him so!! i hope you like it!!
TW// none
you awake to sweet wet kisses pressed against your shoulder blades. aneurin is always the first to wake. and he always takes advantage of it. whispering sweet nothings into your ear, kissing you out of your slumber, admiring his idea of perfection while you dream away silently, except for the occasional snore, which he adores.
you decide to try to get some more sleep, almost every night since he’s been home from filming has been spent with your bodies desperate for each other’s touch, making up for lost time while he was away. you assume he understand as you pull the blanket back up to your face. just as your consciousness begins to slip into a place farther away you hear aneurin speaking.
it wasn’t just any words he was saying, he was speaking welsh. and god you loved hear him talk in his native tongue, it’s was like a mystery. you didn’t know what he was saying, but you knew it meant something he couldn’t seem to want to tell you in english. he didn’t speak it much around you since you hadn’t learned much yet. mostly he spoke it in times like these; when he was so overwhelmed with his love for you he poured his heart out in something he knew you didn’t understand verbally, but felt emotionally.
“gallai fy angel, sut i ddymuno geiriau fynegi'r syniadau sydd fi wedi tuag atoch. os i ddweud fi cariad chi, yna y cant yn fwy o fy ngeiriau yn dal unexpressed. Ond wrth gwrs, mae'n rhaid i ddweud rhywbeth … mae fy nghalon yn curo ar eich cyfer chi, ac mae fy nghalon yn hiraethu ar eich cyfer chi.”
he speaks into the air, brushing his fingers through your hair slowly. “what does that mean, love?” you question, pulling your mind back to the real world. “oh, nothing darling. don’t worry yourself, go back to sleep.” he whispers. you turn over and look aneurin deep into his eyes, fingers entangled to the curls at the back of his neck,“please tell me, i want to understand.”
“i said, ‘my angel, how i wish words could express the thoughts that i have towards you. if i should say i love you then the greater percent of my words are still unexpressed. but of course, i must say something … my heart beats for you, and my heart longs for you.’”
his words bring tears to your eyes. “don’t cry, love.. please don’t cry.” he says wiping your tears away pulling you into his chest. the way he is holding you so protectively, guarding you from whatever has fought these tears upon, and the confession of his love is overwhelming and you can’t hold back anymore. “it’s just that, no one has ever said something so endearing to me before. christ, i love you so much aneurin. are these the kind of things you’ve being saying in welsh this whole time?” you ask framing his hair behind his ears. “possibly.” he answers kissing you to change the subject. you could tell he was embarrassed by the tips of his ears turning red and voice becoming quieter.
one thing leads to another and aneurin is on top of you proceeding with your usual precious, slow, and sloppy morning sex. “i can’t get enough of you, Y/N” he whispers into your ear as he gives you everything he’s got. your toes curl in pleasure, your gaze half lidden but never breaking away from those deep brown eyes.
your moans and aneurin’s quick grunts filled the space. “aneurin, i love you” you manage to speak through the pleasure. “i love you to, darling.” his thrusts becoming careless and slower as you both come to your end. pulling each other close, breath still panting, coated with a new layer of sweat. “how did i ever go so long with out this everyday?” he says caressing your back. “i don’t know but let’s not ever push it again.” you press your forehead to his, taking in the moment. “rwy'n dy garu di..” aneurin speaks softly. the only welsh phrase you know, and your favorite by far. “i love you to.”
