Getting back into Sonic has reminded me of how much I love sontails... It's such a cute and fluffy ship, they just warm my heart so much. 

I’ve seen a lot of hate for it lately, though, so I ended up writing a whole essay (aka rambling) about why I think they’re great together. Figured I’d share that here for anyone that might need a pick-me-up :) 

(Or for people interested in learning the perspective of a shipper, ig. I’m open to discussion.)

“What’s so good about them?”

I know plenty of people hate it romantically, but I really adore their bond in any shape or form. The idea of this really cool hero that's just some guy and his nerdy life partner settling together feels so wholesome to me, with how much they appreciate each other.

There's a closeness and mutual understanding in their dynamic that is simply perfect. I can see them casually growing into a relationship once it hits them how much they need each other in their lives — and it'd be the mushiest thing known to man, I tell you. 

To Tails, Sonic is his light and source of inspiration, after saving him from bullies; to Sonic, Tails is the best buddy he could've asked for, someone loyal that will always keep up with him. They mean the world to each other. They're very attached, to the point the other character feels 'wrong' when they're alone (Sonic: Tails... it’s weird without you following me... [Frontiers], Tails' whole disappearance act after Sonic went missing [Forces]).

It isn't hard to imagine the adoration they hold for each other in a romantic light.

They're always together, through thick and thin. They were each other's first friend. Wanting to keep the other safe, wanting to support them… those are emotions just as powerful in friendships than in relationships, and very much present in their case. 

They're literally called the Unbreakable Bond. Their friendship has been put to the test before, but it always stays firm in the end — so how would their closeness work in case either of them developed feelings...? It's pretty cute, it can be drama-free if you want it to, but it can be kinda angsty and interesting all at the same time. 

With how important they are to each other, anything that alters or touches on their bond can make for great character development. That really drew me to them in the first place.

(Here's the point when someone would come in and say "You're a freak, please kys", to which I'd reply, I have to wonder what part of what I described is 'freaky' whatsoever. 

I see them as best friends, and their ship dynamic as an adorable, budding love born out of their dozen adventures together. I've clearly stated as such. If that's gross to you, I got nothing, to be honest.)

“Okay, but they’re brothers. You’re disgusting.”

Of course, I understand why people see it brotherly as well, and respect that vision. But I grew up with them in the 2010s, with them being strictly best friends, and with their bond always getting the spotlight in the titles I was initially familiar with [Colours, Lost World]. 

They complimented each other perfectly back then, and they still do now that I’m familiar with more of the Sonic franchise.

I feel the whole brother thing is prominent in English versions of the media, such as certain scripts having Sonic call him "lil' bro" as a term of endearment, or the old cartoons [AoSTH] where they are actual family. I never got that impression from them while playing the games in Spanish, and I think the fact it's a well-known ship in the fandom overall shows I'm not the only one.

Being "as close as family" is also a very popular trope for people into romances, whether you personally like it or not. It can stay like that, with the characters treating each other like the sibling they never had, or evolve into them seeing each other in a different light as time passes, thanks to their closeness. Both are good, healthy outcomes.

“They also have an age gap.”

Ah, yes, there's the matter of age difference as well. I didn't know about their ages when I was a kid, I found the discourse surrounding them absurd when I was a teenager, and I'm not gonna care about it now that SEGA removed them from their profiles, since it's obvious they didn't ever make much sense. What kind of 8 or 12 year olds drive planes and cars?

In the games I’ve played, Sonic and Tails have been consistently portrayed as best friends, first and foremost, by most writers. That's the media I care the most about, and the one that made me invested in the characters in the first place.

(Also, fun fact, official Sonic designer Naoto Ohshima has occasionally liked and retweeted sontails art. So I don’t think it’s “wrong” to their eyes in current canon.)

In conclusion: I see an endearing friends to lovers narrative in sontails. I see Tails thinking Sonic is the coolest person he's ever met, and Sonic thinking the same about him in return. I see them finding a perfect partner in each other, falling in love with the person that saved them from solitude.

They're cute as best friends, they're cute as bros, and they're also cute as a couple. I just love them. ��💛

People are perfectly within their right to be uncomfortable with the ship or its fans. But if you dislike them and read this far, I hope I could make you understand, even if just a little bit, why they're not bad to my eyes.

Hey so does this mean the Ancients also made the Gaia Temples? They're also conspicuously designed for the Chaos Emeralds and some of the Ancients did manage to escape the Starfall Islands to Angel Island, so who's to say other groups didn't?

One of my favorite things about Sonic as a character is so subtle that a lot of people don't even notice it. He doesn't let anyone see his pain. When Sonic feels shitty, he still smiles through it all when others are around because he's Sonic the Hedgehog- if he can't be witty and jokey about something, the situation is truly hopeless. This is shown excellently in the ending of Sonic Adventure 2 and in Sonic Froniters. Spoilers for both, obviously.

Following the battle with the Project Shadow prototype [BIOLIZARD], when Sonic returns to the ARK's escape pod bay where everyone's waiting for him and Shadow, he's clearly in shock over Shadow's supposed death. He silently walks over and hands Rouge the Limiter Rings that burst off Shadow's wrists when he went Super for the first time, and that explains what happened without having to say anything. As the characters discuss Shadow, Gerald, the ARK, and what they'll do next, there's a shot of Sonic talking to himself about Shadow in a somber tone. When Amy comes over and asks what's wrong, Sonic *immediately* changes his tone to be a bit more upbeat, recommending they all return to Earth. But as soon as everyone else leaves the room, as soon as he knows he's alone and can safely express his grief-

"Adios, Shadow the Hedgehog"

People like to shit on Sonic Frontiers' characterization, but it pulls off this aspect of Sonic's personality expertly. Over the course of the story, as Sonic takes on more and more Cyber energy and becomes corrupted, he's obviously in pain, but any time one of his friends or even Sage is around, he's hiding his pain and downplaying his corruption as "not that bad"

The Final Horizon/Another Story update expands on this further. As Amy, Knuckles, and Tails all work together to gather the Chaos Emeralds, they take on Cyber energy too- and they nearly crumble. With less than a fraction of what Sonic absorbed, they're crying out in pain and falling backwards onto the ground exhausted. Knuckles even points out, "Sonic went through 3 islands' worth of this, no way I'm going down in just one."

This not only shows Sonic's strength, but what his attitude in the face of horrible circumstances does for others. He takes on these gigantic burdens, and most of the time he *can* handle it, but even when he struggles, he still puts on a brave face, so he can still be that shining light of hope for everyone who is counting on and looking up to him.

can you guys think with your brains. it sucks tom sonicmovie is a cop. end of sentence. no "but hes a good cop" or "well hes just a small-town cop!" or "he barely does cop things!" thats copoganda. thats literally. what that is. it sucks period no excuses no well actuallys. presenting a character thats a cop as A Good Guy Actually or as not part of the Bad Side of the system is literally copaganda. the movies are pro-cop. sucks but accept it.

Back again with a little experimental thing! This is just a fragment of something, really; an exploration of thoughts. Since it's based around Frontiers, consider this your spoiler warning!

I used one of the monologues as a springboard of sorts again this time. More importantly, I don't know if I like this one or not.

Fragment #1 Universe: Modern (Frontiers) Word Count: 161

(Amy… I should've made up my mind sooner.)

Amy Rose loves Sonic. That's a fact of the universe, just as the sun rises and sets each day.

His own feelings, though, are more complicated.

It's not that he doesn't love her: she's one of his oldest and closest friends, and while she can be a little overzealous at times he wouldn't hang around if he didn't at least like her.

Even when it's a lot, it's not necessarily bad.

So she loves him, and he likes her. It's simple enough on paper.

But where she's confident, he's shy. Her bold displays of affection are overwhelming, and he doesn't know what to do with himself.

So he runs, because he's Sonic and that's what he does.

He always thought they'd have more time. There was never any rush to express his feelings.

Now everything is wrong, and he's trying to fix it but every day that goal feels further out of reach.

I had two days to think about what Sonic Frontiers did to Eggman. Huge spoilers obviously...

When I heard that they were going to do a father-daughter relationship between them, I wasn’t only hoping they would be doing something like Shinji in Evangelion, I was EXPECTING it, it only makes sense to me that Eggman would care for a child as long as they are useful, and even then, only see them as a tool. And that’s really insteresting to me, as far as I remember, most creations of Eggman with free will don’t see him as a father; Orbot doesn’t even respect him at all, and I’d say the closest Metal ever got to acting as a son for Eggman was in Heroes (I mean, that’s if you count the “angsty teenager who thinks their parents just don’t get it”).

I’m not gonna lie, it was intriguing even when I saw that Egg Memo that mentioned it, because it seemed to make sense to me that Eggman would value a creation that has displayed efficiency... but Metal Sonic is already a thing, and he is NOT Eggman’s “son”... you know, unless you’re reading IDW.

It would make a lot of sense for Eggman to create a child because of a “romanticized” version of family IMO, creating another being that exists only to serve him is something that he already does in the form of his countless robots, and he definetly seems to have at least some interest in creating original personalities, as seen in things like Orbot and Cubot, maybe it’s an extension of him wanting to conquer the world, it makes sense that he would enjoy telling other people what to do.

Anyway, my problem with this development is that it makes Eggman too soft. MAYBE I will change my mind, I really want this to be the case, because I don’t want to stop enjoying one of the most consistent characters in this series. I will give it the benefit of the doubt (even if I think it’s undeserved), I haven’t seen all of Frontiers’ scenes yet, so maybe the execution is better.

Out of curiosity, why does it bothers you that Sega refers to Tails as a sidekick? I mean its pretty much an informed attribute/flaw at this point, since if I remember right, he's never referred as such in game and only a couple of times in the Archie and IDW comics and in Sonic Boom.

The term “sidekick” is just demeaning, imo. A sidekick is a hero’s assistant, a hero’s helper, they’re not a hero in their own right, not really. There’s a reason why the word “sidekick” is often preceded by the word “little,” as in, “your little sidekick.” Sure, sidekicks help. But they very rarely, if ever, go on solo adventures. It’s why the various Robins throughout the years adopted other identities when they went solo (most of the time, anyway). Dick Grayson became Nightwing, Stephanie Brown was Spoiler, Jason Todd was Red Hood, and so on and so forth. Sure, you get instances like Teen Titans where Dick was still Robin even as he led the Titans, but most of the time when sidekicks “graduate” to being heroes in their own right, they take on a new name and hero identity. Sidekicks are assistants, subordinates, tagalongs. It’s a step down from hero.

So for me, “sidekick” is a belittling term, and I’m not a fan of it. But I also feel that it just doesn’t fit Tails anymore! Yes, he helps Sonic—but he also helps the rest of the team with his tools and technology. And more importantly, he has had solo adventures and he has saved the day on his own, multiple times. “Tails’ Sky Patrol” and “Tails Adventure” are both games where he’s the only playable character / hero. The Sonic Adventure games had an entire arc about him stepping into heroism in his own right, with him saving Station Square on his own in SA1 and having numerous successful solo missions / solo battles against Eggman where he came out victorious (on the Hero Side, sure, but still). In the comics, he’s not only held his own in most of his appearances (the only time we saw him cowering was at the very end of the Metal Virus saga), but he was also the one who essentially came up with a cure for the Metal Virus before it was destroyed, managed to talk down his evil clone, saved the day altogether in the most recent issue, etc. At this point, Tails helps Sonic as much as Sonic helps him. It’s not a hero-sidekick/assistant relationship, they’re hero partners.

So it just bugs me. It’s not that I think Tails is some amazing hero with no flaws—actually, part of the reason I like him so much is because he has flaws. I like that he’s not great at lying and can be caught off-guard sometimes (such as when he blurted out “how did you know?!” when Eggman said the Emerald was fake in SA2). I like that he’s not always confident in himself, that he feels afraid in dangerous situations, even as he squares up to do the thing anyway. I like that he can be a little sensitive at times, and have fits of temper like the kid he is. But you can have flaws—you can lack self-confidence at times, you can be afraid in the face of danger, you can be young and inexperienced or naïve—and still be a hero. Hell, in the IDW comics, Cream’s bio calls her “Gentle Heroine,” and she’s never had a solo adventure or saved the day on her own! Keep in mind that I’m not against Cream being called a hero, because she’s definitely on Team Hero and she’s SO brave and I adore her—but if anyone could count as a sidekick (apart from Kit), it would be Cream to Amy’s hero. But . . . she’s not. She gets the bump up to hero/heroine while Tails is just “sidekick.” I wish I could understand what the criteria or thought process is here, but I just don’t. It makes no sense.

So yeah, it bugs me. It’s probably going to always bug me. It’s small potatoes when Tails is otherwise treated very well in the comics (and I can only hope he gets treated well in Frontiers after the Forces debacle), but it’s still an annoyance whenever I look at the descriptive blurbs on the bio page of the comics. It’s just one of those things.
