Hello again! If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that LBHR is one of the most popular treatments for managing excessive hair growth caused by PCOS. But as we dive deeper into this process, it’s important to recognise that booking your consultation is only the first step. Preparation, aftercare, and understanding how to maintain your results are key, especially since, for many of us with PCOS, the typical six sessions recommended for most people will not be enough (Liew, 2002).
Preparation for LBHR: Setting Yourself Up for Success
Avoiding Prolonged/Excessive Sun Exposure: One of the most important pre-session steps is to avoid direct sun exposure. Tanned skin can increase the risk of burns or pigmentation changes due to the laser (Alamri et al., 2023).
Shaving Before Treatment: Make sure to shave the treatment area a day before your session—this allows the laser to effectively target the root of the hair follicle without the hair shaft getting in the way (Mustafa & Jaafar, 2015).
Avoid Waxing or Plucking: It’s crucial not to remove the hair from the root (like with waxing or plucking) before your laser sessions, as the laser needs the follicle intact to adequately target the melanin within the hair follicle.

Moisturise Regularly: Keep the treated area moisturised using a thick, emollient-type moisturiser to help protect the skin from excessive water loss. Avoid any products with ingredients like retinol or AHAs/BHAs for 2-3 days post-treatment, as these can irritate the more sensitive, lasered skin (Vaidya et al., 2023).
Avoid Sun Exposure: Just like before your treatment, protecting your skin from the sun afterward is essential. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ to prevent hyperpigmentation (Hamzavi et al., 2020).
Gentle Cleansing: Stick to mild cleansers, and avoid hot showers, saunas, or strenuous workouts that cause sweating for at least 24-36 hours post-treatment. Sweating can trap moisture in swollen hair follicles, potentially leading to rashes or infections (Arsiwala & Majid, 2019).
Maintaining Results and Understanding the Process
While LBHR offers long-term reduction in hair growth, it’s important to remember that this journey is a process—it’s not an instant fix. For those with PCOS, the typically recommended six sessions are often not enough, and you’ll likely need additional treatments to see significant changes. Here’s why:
Hormonal Impact: With PCOS, fluctuating hormone levels continuously stimulate hair growth, which means more than six sessions are often necessary to achieve lasting results. Each session weakens the hair follicles further, which is why consistency is key. Remember, if you’re waxing between sessions, you’re removing the root that the laser targets, so it’s best to stick with shaving.
Regular Treatments: Consistent treatments, spaced every 4-6 weeks, are essential for targeting hair during its active growth phase. While this may feel frequent at first, patience and consistency are what lead to noticeable results. You’ll likely notice slower hair growth, and the hair that does return will be thinner and sparser. In my experience treating patients with PCOS, most clients start seeing these effects around the 6-7 session mark, with hair shedding naturally after it weakens.
Maximising My Results: What Else Should I Do?
Stay on Top of Hormonal Management: Since PCOS is closely linked to hormone imbalances, working with a healthcare provider to manage your hormones—whether through medication or lifestyle changes—can enhance the effectiveness of your laser treatments. For me personally, hormonal management became much more controllable after I was prescribed Metformin by a specialist. While I can’t recommend specific treatments, I strongly encourage seeing a medical professional to keep your PCOS under control.
Choosing the Right Clinic/Clinician: Not all lasers are created equal. Ensure you select a clinic with advanced technology and experience in treating individuals with PCOS, especially across diverse skin tones. You may have heard that darker hair on lighter skin achieves quicker results, but modern laser modalities can effectively treat all skin types. Regardless of your skin tone, as long as you have dark hair, there’s a suitable laser for you.
LBHR is a powerful tool for managing PCOS-related hair growth, but achieving the best results requires thoughtful preparation, diligent aftercare, and realistic expectations. With consistency and proper support, this journey can lead to significant, long-lasting results. Don’t hesitate to consult with your healthcare provider to tailor your treatment plan, and always be patient with the process. I’ve lost the will to care about my health- here’s a list of things I’m doing to lose weight in 2024 (with pros and cons from research and person experience):
1. Caffeine (Long Black, and if you need laxative and are lactose intolerant: milk but no sugar). Caffeine is know for its stimulation on the nervous system. It sends direct signals to fat cells and breaks it down. Drinking with added syrups or sugars may cause you to gain weight. But, it does taste better with it. It can raise blood pressure, and therefore you need to consider pre-existing conditions. For example: I have POTS, and I’m not supposed to drink large amounts of caffeine or do too much strenuous activity, but I don’t drink it every day.
2. Cold compresses on areas you want to lose fat. Shivering is known to help induce weight loss- as it releases the hormone irisin from muscles and the hormone FGF21 from brown fat stores. It also can increase metabolism as it increases oxidation of both fat and carbohydrates. I usually add wearing loose clothing or shorts and turn on the aircon. Swimming in cold water may help too!! But, obviously don’t do it too much in one go as you may be prone to hypothermia or other conditions like colds.
3. Walking and online workouts. Like I said before, I can’t do too much strenuous activity as it makes me faint or puts my heart rate at an uncomfortable level- but, walking a lot helps me since it doesn’t need to be too hard. You can find online workouts that help target areas of unwanted fat (and you can usually do it from your bed)! It can be uncomfortable, so don’t overwork yourself.
4. N1cot1n3 products. I’m not promoting this to younger audiences (or any audience really)- but, it’s not my business on your age and what you do. This substance helps reduce appetite and therefore food intake. It is also said to increase resting metabolic rate and number of calories the body burns at rest. However, it isn’t good for your lungs, gums, or any other body parts. And, most products within this substance range have a small amount of calories themselves. Some people find that it clears up their skin, others find it doesn’t, and so on, so forth. However, OD is possible, especially in the beginning (throwing up, fainting, and other horrible things), but once I got over that, it’s been amazing (but very addictive).
5. Of course, the most well known way to lose weight is indulging in a calorie deficit. This can get to the point of being severe and would be bad for you (as you probably know)- and unless ending up in the hospital from not eating enough is on your 2024 bucket list, you have to do this in moderation (not super fun, I can tell you that). You can find inspiration pics on Tumblr, TikTok or Pinterest for calorie deficit diets (and I’m more than happy to post some on here as well), but use this one safely if you can. Or hide your symptoms if able- that is a personal choice.
6. This one goes hand in hand with 5. but, cutting out unnecessary fat, salt and sugar. Again, you can find inspiration for these types of meals online, but do it safely. Don’t do what Emily did on Devil Wears Prada, and only eat a cube of cheese when feeling faint- that may actually have you in the hospital being force fed. Following diet and healthy lifestyle videos (some are toxic, so beware) may help with motivation. I’m happy to try and find some for you and put it in comments. But, doing this can also help with skin, hair, and overall health. If you’ve seen people online who go a week without unnecessary sugar, you know what I’m talking about.
7. Okay, this one may be controversial (more than the others), but go off weight gaining medication. Of course, some people physically cannot go off those medications, and that’s okay- but if you have the choice, then go for it. Talk to a G.P about your concerns, and hopefully they can help you out. Again, this may be difficult, but it doesn’t hurt to try. I have been put on multiple medications in the past that made me gain mass amounts of weight, and they told me to just go on a diet and exercise (which of course didn’t work because the medication was so strong). I’m lucky enough to be at an age (no longer considered to be under “Gillick competence” in the medical world) and position in my life where I have the freedom to refuse those medications, but I understand that you may not. I’m not saying you should go off those medications without guidance, but I found that at one point, it was my only option as it had other side effects that threatened my life (and G.P wouldn’t let me go off).
All of these may be hard to accomplish due to money, living, and age restrictions. Practicing self control, and being more assertive (if able) with others can make a big difference. Of course, some families may not allow this, maybe due to cultural (or other) reasons, but as long as you’re safe (I don’t have much concern for myself anymore, but that’s personal preference), and able to live without a hospital. “Some times I feel I’ve got to run away, I’ve got to run away…” Her footfalls are too fast to keep in step with the song’s beat, but it still gives her some comfort to listen. Some, because really, when she’s punishing her body for the mere sake of feeling it scream at her, there’s not much comfort to be found.
“Once I ran to you, now I’ll run from you, this tainted love you’ve given-” She’s so busy concentrating on pushing herself, making herself hurt, that she doesn’t realize there’s anyone in front of her until she runs smack dab into them. “Oof!”
She’s knocked flat on her ass, but it doesn’t keep her down (no, of course not, she’s a damn super soldier now). She hops up immediately, intent on apologizing, making sure the other person is okay, and then getting back to her run, when the person she’s run into grasps her arm.
“I’m so sorry, ma’am are you-” Whoever she ran into stops short (she’s trying not to look him in the face, faces are painful to see now that she knows she’ll never see Barnes’ again), and the hand on her elbow falls away, forcing her to look up. Oh no.
“Steve.” Great. Out of all the people she had to run into, it had to be Steve Rogers. She knows most women would be absolutely thrilled to have knocked Captain America off his feet (he’s now brushing off the back of his pants, which she should probably do as well, but can’t bring herself to care), but not her. Some of my close girlfriends convinced me to go to a new restaurant in town for drinks.
Being a first-time mom, I was struggling with the challenges of motherhood. Despite being a certified personal trainer, finding consistency with my workouts was harder than imagined and my social life was dying a slow painful death.
So naturally, I felt like this was the perfect opportunity to get back out there and reestablish my life post-baby.

The Injury
The new restaurant my friends recommended was lively and crowded. People were standing shoulder to should and all the windows open to help with the airflow. I was rushed to the closest hospital and put in the ICU before my husband and family arrived. They were told that I had suffered from a triple brain hemorrhage, an emergency condition where ruptured blood vessels cause bleeding inside the brain.
Since I was in a coma, doctors weren’t sure of the impact my injury had on my body. They couldn’t even tell if I’d wake up let alone be able to walk, talk or breathe on my own again.
Miraculously, I was one of the lucky ones. After several days of being in a coma, I woke up and my body seemed to be functioning normally.
But my life had changed forever.

The Aftermath
After waking up from the coma, I suffered from serious amnesia and remained in the ICU for 12 days. Even after going home, my memory didn’t improve. I still knew who I and my loved ones were, but for months, I had about a five-minute recall before I’d get confused and flustered by what was going on around me. I also started having nightmares, which is actually a pretty common side-effect of short-term memory loss.
When you lose chunks of memory, your brain works hard trying to remember what happened. But no matter what you try, you just can’t. I’d often dream that I was falling (a common nightmare many people have), but I'd wake up to realize that wasn’t completely imagining things. I had fallen, but I couldn't remember the entire incident, which was both frustrating and confusing.

I also experienced extreme sensitivity to light and sound, and completely lost my sense of taste and smell. (Eventually, my taste came back, but I still can't smell anything.)
Worst of all, my head was in a lot of pain. While I didn’t have to undergo brain surgery, doctors did whatever they could medically to reduce the swelling and bleeding in my brain. Still, it was going to take time for the swelling to subside, and until then, the pain was something I was going to have to learn to live with.
The Physical and Emotional Recovery
To help my mind heal both physically and intellectually, I began cognitive therapy at home. To deal with the emotional repercussions of my injury, I also underwent therapy for PTSD; this was especially important in order to address the nightmares.
Throughout my recovery, I also lost a lot of muscle and overall strength. Without my sense of taste, eating was difficult and it took months before I was able to slowly start exercising again.

The most challenging part of my injury, however, was that it was difficult for others to see what I was going through. When months passed and I wasn't left with any visible scars from the accident—my hair covers the wound on my head and the scar on my right hand is so small no one even notices it—no one could see how the fall changed my life and how I deal with the repercussions of it every. single. day.

Before my accident, if you asked my best friends to describe me, they’d say I was a Type-A, hyper-organized perfectionist. It was so important that I showed everyone how in control I was.
It is, in part, what drove me to develop an eating disorder when I was in high school and become so fixated on people’s perceptions of me. While I overcame my unhealthy eating habits, my need to appear ‘perfect’ in others’ eyes still remained.

But following my injury, no matter how hard I tried, I could never be 100 percent in control. The Ashley everyone knew couldn’t exist in my new reality and coming to terms with that was downright terrifying.
The first few years after my injury, I went through an identity crisis, having to figure out who I was. Being in control and striving for perfection had defined me for so long that I couldn't quite grasp who I was without it. It's taken four years of therapy and self-reflection after my accident to eradicate the word “perfect” from my vocabulary and to realize that perfectionism just isn’t realistic.
Putting that work into myself has helped me live a more positive and optimistic life. It's also better prepared me for recent health struggles I've had to face. Six months ago, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, a condition where your thyroid gland can't make enough thyroid hormone to keep the body running normally. I gained 40 pounds in just two months and given my background in fitness, that was extremely tough for me.
But having been through what I’ve been through I knew that this too was out of my control. As long as I'm doing everything I can to address the problem, and being as healthy as I can be, then that’s good enough. The numbers on the scale and the way my body has changed are just not significant enough to sweat over in the big picture.

How My Injury Changed My Approach to Fitness
Shifting my mindset also transformed how I think about fitness. During my career as a personal trainer, I've always felt the pressure of having to look the part. I thought I had to be a walking, talking billboard for my clients. But my accident forced me to realize that fitness is so much more than that. It’s not always about the six-pack and PRs, it’s about finding out how moving your body fuels you as an individual.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve since refound my groove in the gym and still push myself in ways that are necessary, but I’m so much more cognizant of what really matters long-term. It, unfortunately, took a life-altering experience for me to realize that being good enough is okay; that focusing on the moment is okay; that failing is okay. You have to realize that doing your best isn’t settling.

Now, when I take on clients and have them fill out a goal sheet, they’re required to share an intrinsic goal for every extrinsic goal they want to achieve. Why? Because both are equally important.
Looking ahead, while I’m unsure of the obstacles I’ll have to face, I know to be appreciative of all have and what is in front of me right now because life really can change in the blink of an eye.

When I owned a gym I watched countless people struggle with losing weight. If they did lose it, it was almost a given that they would eventually gain it back. Through my nutrition program, I was able to help countless people gain a healthy lifestyle. Consistently, I saw the same behaviors and problems during those coaching sessions. Here are the top five reasons you can’t lose weight.
I hardly eat anything!
One of the biggest reasons many people struggle with losing weight and staying in top condition is that they are not eating nutritiously. There are many diets out there that encourage people to cut their calories, carbs, fat grams, etc. to ridiculously small levels.
In this case, I have seen people “save” insert one of the above to eat something unhealthy. It’s the very essence of the problem. Instead of eating nutritious foods for lunch and dinner, I’ve saved my calories to binge on Doritos or have an extra bad dinner.
If I had a dollar for every time someone told me, “but I eat barely anything and can’t lose weight” I would be a rich woman. The problem is not the quantity of what you are eating, it’s the quality. Sure, I could boast that I only ate 1200 calories today, but if my breakfast was a 200 calorie unglazed donut and my lunch was 400 calories worth of cheese puffs…you get the point, yikes.
Enter the Paleo way of eating. Paleo eliminates gluten, dairy, and refined sugar. This forces us to think about eating the most healthy and natural foods. Essentially what our bodies were designed to eat. Now the calories I am consuming are meaningful.
Last, be sure that you are writing down what you are actually eating every day. There are many great apps for this like Fitness Pal. You might be surprised about what you are actually consuming.

Insulin to name the biggest culprit in hormone dysregulation may be part of your problem. Insulin is a hormone that is meant to help deal with all of the energy you consume after you eat. You’re either burning it for energy or storing it as fat.
In a healthy body the insulin level spikes immediately after eating. Whether you eat carbs or protein. However, sometimes the body doesn’t regulate the hormone right and your insulin stays high.
When insulin is chronically elevated the body never reverts to burning its storage of energy (aka fat). What does this mean? You may feel like your starving but never lose weight.
The danger is that eventually, chronically elevated insulin can lead to diabetes.
How did you get here? Chronically elevated insulin is typically caused by excess fat specifically the kind stored around the middle of your body. Sleep deprivation, lack of exercise, and smoking can also contribute.

I hate Exercise!
I have seen it all when it comes to exercise done wrong. Here are just a few common mistakes people make when it comes to exercise.
Excessive: It may be in response to our fast-paced, instant gratification lifestyles. We start something new and we go hard so we can see quick results. People come to the gym for the first time in years and just absolutely punish themselves. I mean the running ten miles uphill while stopping to do 25 burpees every 2 minutes kind of punishment. Chillax! How about we start with something sustainable? Maybe walking 20 minutes every day? You can do anything for just 20 minutes, right? Find it boring? Try a book on audible while you walk. If you go so hard that you hate it you won’t do it again. Increase your workouts as you lose weight and gain muscle. Challenge yourself to improve when you are ready.
No Variety: It would be like if you ate the same food every day for the rest of your life. Don’t do the same thing every time. Do something different. Pre-plan your workouts one day a week for the next seven days. Think about what you’re going to do and when. Beach Body has all kinds of workouts on their on-demand program if you are looking for some variety and don’t want to join a gym.
Discipline: It’s a Monday, my legs hurt, my job is stressful, I have friends coming over, my house is a mess, I have split ends… I’ve heard all of the excuses in the book. Pick a time every day that will work for you and do it as if your life depends on it because it does.
Not enough: Matthew McConaughey says to sweat a little every day. Do whatever that looks like for you, note that “I chase my kids around all day” is not actually considered a form of exercise it’s more a form of sleep deprivation.
Consistency: It’s forever, every week, all of the time. The consistency is what makes the difference. It’s like brushing your teeth, you have to brush them for 2 minutes twice a day every day. Brushing them for 2 minutes once per week will likely result in your teeth falling out.

Whether you love dessert or love chips you have a sugar addiction. Sugar can be addictive and may be part of the reason that you struggle to lose weight. Your brain is constantly sending you messages about how you can get your next sugar fix! Listen to me, you can not out “will power” an addiction that you keep feeding. Eventually, it will win. It’s classic addictive behavior, most people can’t imagine giving up gluten because they can’t fathom giving up the sugar. Since the American diet is laced with sugar in just about every processed food item it is hard to avoid. Don’t believe me?
Try this experiment with yourself. Next time you get a craving for a cookie or a chip consider if you are actually hungry. The way I determine this is to think about eating some broccoli or a meat stick as a snack instead. Huh! Not so hungry right, you’re just craving your fix.
Does it mean that if you eat sugar you are destined to be overweight? You know you best. I know some people who can smoke an occasional cigarette but don’t become addicted, rather the exception than the rule. If you know you don’t have that level of discipline, stop tempting yourself beyond what you are capable of enduring.
The “It’s Not Fair” mentality
If you value food, sugar, and lack of exercise in your life more than you value how you look, feel, or a longer life with your loved ones than stop worrying about it!
Embrace you! Be happy in your skin and be comfortable with your decision. What is really important to you? Stop and really think about it. Your body can take a ton of abuse and keep on going. In fact, it probably already has. You do you and stop worrying about what’s important to other people.
If on the other hand how you look, feel, and longer life is more important than its time to give up the “It’s not fair” mentality. It’s just food, it’s not you, it’s not your life, your kids, your friends, your work.
Stop viewing food as a source of happiness. Stop viewing eating healthy as deprivation of enjoyment. Enjoy your life, eat to stay alive. Only eat when you’re hungry and then only eat until you’re satisfied not stuffed.
When you go out for dinner with friends focus on enjoying their company rather than focusing on the food. Focus on the healthy things you are going to eat that will contribute to many more occasions that you can enjoy.

When Does Fasting Cross the Line?
A little while back, Mark posted an article about 14 scenarios in which intermittent fasting (IF) might be just the ticket. We got some requests for a follow-up about times when IF might not be advised.
Mark has already written about cautions for women and athletes specifically. I’ll link those at the bottom. More generally, it’s important that anyone considering IF make sure that they are in a good place physically and mentally to handle the additional stress of IF.
As Mark said:
If you haven’t satisfied the usual IF “pre-reqs,” like being fat-adapted, getting good and sufficient sleep, minimizing or mitigating stress, and exercising well (not too much and not too little), you should not fast. These pre-reqs are absolutely crucial and non-negotiable, in my opinion—especially the fat-adaptation. In fact, I suspect that if an IF study was performed on sugar-burning women versus fat-adapted women, you’d see that the fat-burning beasts would perform better and suffer fewer (if any) maladaptations.
Fasting is generally healthy when done properly. The same goes for exercise and carb restriction. These behaviors help many people; but they can also be unhealthy for certain people or when used too much or in the wrong circumstances.
Today I’d like to wade into potentially controversial waters and talk about when fasting potentially crosses the line into disordered eating territory.
Before You Get Defensive…
If you find yourself feeling defensive already because you enjoy fasting and think that I’m going to suggest that you have a problem, please hold off commenting until the end.
To be clear: I do not think that fasting is inherently disordered. However, its popularity has skyrocketed so rapidly, and its proponents are so enthusiastic, that the potential downsides have been overshadowed. Actually, that’s not entirely fair. I have seen plenty of people in mental health and disordered eating circles voice concerns. The ancestral community tends to be very rah-rah about fasting.
The goal for today is to shine a light on this issue so that we don’t go into fasting with a blind spot.
Eating Disorders vs. Disordered Eating
The prevalence of full-blown eating disorders (ED) is fairly low according to NEDA, the National Eating Disorders Association. Experts believe biological and/or psychological predispositions make certain individuals vulnerable. These predispositions probably interact with environmental factors to trigger ED.
That said, many more people engage in disordered eating behaviors. The behaviors and their effects are not problematic enough to qualify for diagnosis with ED, but they still negatively affect physical and/or mental health and quality of life. Depending on their severity, they might be considered suboptimal to truly unhealthy.
Before going any further, let me be clear: I’m not in any way trying to diagnose readers with ED or disordered eating. That is way beyond my pay grade. Nor should you self-diagnose. If you want to learn more or get help, the best place to start is with NEDA’s Help & Support center. They have an online screening tool and a helpline there.
As I said, I don’t think fasting is inherently bad. However, NEDA lists fasting among the behaviors that can be indicative of ED. Of course, professionals in the ED and mental health worlds are looking at fasting through the lens of restricting and exercising tight control over food intake. We in the ancestral health space tend to look at it through the lens of optimizing health.
Neither perspective is more correct. It’s all about context:
why you’re fasting,
how fasting makes you feel physically and mentally,
whether it takes over your life,
if you are using it in a way that is actually undermining your health,
whether you are taking it “too far” (admittedly a nebulous metric)
As with so many things, deciding if you’ve crossed the line is highly personal. This applies to much more than food. When does worry become anxiety? When does fear become a phobia?
One criteria might be whether fasting causes you distress. Another is whether it interferes with your quality of life, social relationships, and work. This is called the criteria of clinical significance in the DSM-V, the diagnostic tool used by mental health professionals.
It’s often apparent, though not always easy to accept, when a behavior is no longer serving us. Unfortunately, though, it’s not always that simple. When it comes to fasting, it can cross over into problematic territory and still feel good.
Wouldn’t I Know If My Fasting Regime Was Too Much?
Maybe, maybe not. Restricting calories and fasting can lead to elevated mood, increased energy and motivation, and even feelings of euphoria. (Fasting that doesn’t result in a caloric deficit might be less prone to this.)
There are physiological reasons why this might be the case. First, scientists hypothesize that this is an adaptive response. If you were truly starving, this increased energy, drive, and focus would help you redouble your efforts to find food.
There is also some evidence that food restriction affects serotonin and dopamine pathways and can, for some individuals, reduce anxiety. Researchers believe that this is one way anorexic behaviors are reinforced in the brain. Again, fasting and anorexia nervosa are NOT the same animal, but they can share common features. The “high” associated with anorexia nervosa sounds not unlike the profound energy and cognitive benefits that some people report with fasting.
All this is to say, food restriction can feel good. For some people—or more accurately, for some brains—the withholding of food becomes inherently rewarding. In that case, you wouldn’t necessarily recognize when enough is enough.
How Do You Know If You’ve Crossed the Line?
I’m not going to be able to provide a definitive answer here. That said, these seem like potential red flags:
Fasting makes you feel euphoric. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s harmful by any means. Still, take a step back and evaluate whether you are always making healthy choices.
Your fasting regimen causes distress or significantly interferes with your life.
You feel like you have to fast or something bad will happen.
When you eat after a fast, you feel out of control with your food intake or binge.
You’re ignoring symptoms that might be related to too much fasting: adrenal or thyroid issues, fatigue, hair loss, weakness or inability to perform usual workouts, sleep disturbances, too much weight loss, etc.
Again, I am in no way diagnosing anyone here. If you think that perhaps your behavior has crossed into unhealthy territory, you should seek the counsel of someone trained in these issues.
The Bottom Line
Fasting, though it confers certain health benefits, is not good for every person. Experts recommend that individuals at risk for developing ED or with a history of ED refrain from fasting, including intermittent fasting, altogether. Even if you don’t think you’re at risk, it still might not be in your best interest.
Because fasting is so popular right now, some people think they have to fast for optimal health. They worry that they are missing out on tremendous health benefits if they can’t or don’t want to fast. The main reasons people fast are autophagy, glycemic control, and fat loss. You can achieve all of those goals through means other than fasting.
Remember, too, that you need not rigidly adhere to the same eating window every single day. It is fine to fast stochastically, to borrow from Paleo OG Art De Vany. You might also consider doing one longer fast a few times per year instead of daily intermittent fasting.
In any case, if fasting is wrong for you, it’s wrong for you, period. It doesn’t really matter if your neighbor loves it or the lady in the next cubicle lost 60 pounds with IF. If it negatively impacts your physical and/or mental well-being, it’s not worth it.
And in case this isn’t perfectly clear: Enjoying fasting DOES NOT MEAN that you are doing anything wrong. On the contrary, I hope you are enjoying fasting if it’s a tool you’re using regularly. Feeling great is the goal. If it’s not negatively affecting your physical health, psychological well-being, or social relationships, it’s not problematic. Likewise, if you are consuming enough calories when you do eat, and you’re able to be flexible with your fasting schedule when the situation calls for it, you likely don’t have to worry.
This issue can be hard to talk about because so many people feel passionately about defending their way of eating. Those who question whether fasting is always healthy, or who point out that a desire to eat healthfully can sometimes slip into orthorexia, are accused of “fit shaming.”
However, not talking about it isn’t the answer. Our goal should be to bring these issues into the light and try to better understand them. Then we can make informed decisions about which behaviors best serve us now and in the future.
