How do you picture each of the Zelda’s personalities? I feel like some of them, most people agree on like how mostly everyone pictures Fable to be goofy and messes with Legend. Dot (mc! + fs!zelda): kinda rebellious and mischievous tbh 🤔 she does run out the castle to go to four's house for the minish festival without telling anyone and without any guards, four's grandpa is even like "princess please stop doing this" at her lmao she's also super excitable, running around the festival and trying out all the attractions lol she's just this small girl full of energy and whimsy

Lullaby (oot!zelda): i love her tbh i imagine her as this kind and super strong princess, who's a problem solver and would rather do stuff herself than let others do it, resourceful and intelligent, but with a strong air of sadness surrounding her, like no matter how much she smiles the smile doesn't reach her eyes. Very lonely as well, she hangs around the castle gardens a lot.

Dusk (tp!zelda): i love the idea that she's like, super funny and has a very special kind of humor, but her delivery is always monotone and flat, which takes people out and actually makes it even funnier lmao she's like this regal serious beautiful lady who will not hesitate to kill if necessary, but who will make a sarcastic remark out of nowhere or tell a joke with a super serious face, and no one knows if she's being serious or not (which is what amuses her the most tbh) she does this to twilight the moment they're back from the gerudo desert post game and he bursts out laughing so hard he clutches his stomach and she takes it as a lil victory cause seeing him so sad was breaking her heart.

Artemist (hw!zelda): strategic battle genius but also a huge gremlin lmao i like to picture her as a complete opposite to warriors cause it brings me joy, like if it were for her she'd put her hair in a messy bun, put on any armor and go, but she's forced to look "presentable" cause she's a princess and she hates it sm, wars takes like 2 hours to style his hair and put on eyeliner, meanwhile artemist would just wash her face put whatever on and leave for battle, her morning routine is like 5 mins, until impa catches her and forces her to go back and look "decent". She's excellent at politics and diplomacy and knows exactly what to say to manipulate the nobles to do what she wants, but deep down she just wishes she could smack everyone cause why are they all so annoying. Warriors once entered her tent without announcing himself and found her sprawled on the floor eating her food with her hands and her hair all over the place, and immediately left cause what the fuck

Aurora & Dawn (aol!zelda & loz!zelda): honestly haven't thought about them before 🤔 i just like the idea of having 2 zeldas at the same time and the chaos it'll bring, like it'd be super amusing. Aurora absolutely does the "back in my day we would walk miles in the snow to get to school" kinda comments to everything since she's like from 200 years in the past lmao i also see her as like super preppy and completely refusing to sleep, she does all nighters a lot. She slept for so long, she will not sleep until completely necessary!!!! Cue her going to the castle's kitchen for snacks at like 4am every day, the castle staff know her and ignore her at this point lol dawn & aurora are like that one meme with two people stumbling into each other and going "the person who wakes up at 6am vs the person who goes to sleep at 6am" lol

luckily enough he knows not to blame himself for things that are entirely out of his control - i.e. someone getting injured on a job when he's not there. obviously it's not his fault, he wasnt there to change anything. people get injured sometimes. it's just a part of life. he's not going to waste time carrying the weight of it all on his shoulders, he's gonna shut up and HELP. patch them up. do some stitches if necessary. get an ice pack. his brain kind of disconnects a bit, ESPECIALLY if it's a loved one, bc otherwise he would not get anything done. he would be too busy shaking and crying. he Has to get all the important stuff done first [stopping bleeding, cleaning them up, whatever], and THEN!! he can have an insane screaming crying throwing up moment. bc they are always the priority, not him. he needs to focus on their needs before he can focus on himself.

Down in the streets of some unidentified crumbling city, Ochako was approached by a sweet old lady and was all “I better help this sweet old lady who is definitely not leading me into a trap”, which unfortunately turned out to be poor decision-making on her part. Anyway so now she and Toga are going to throw down. AND ALSO, P.S., BEST JEANIST IS STILL ALIVE, and that doesn’t really have anything to do with anything right now, but BY GOLLY I JUST HAD TO SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS.

Trip to the store with Tom and Harry

*This is actually part of a chapter of something I've been writing for myself, just for fun. Basically, the reader is staying with them for the weekend, things are still pretty recent with Tom, she's famous too, whatever, whatever... there are 15 chapters tho (48k + words)! This blurp doesn't contain smut, but the others do, so let me know if you like this, and I might post the full series.

Minor warning: people taking unsolicited pictures, panic attack foreshadowing. Also, this is in a world pre-pandemic (the series happens in June 2019) that's why no maks. But you live in 2021, so please wear yours!

Overall, just pure fluffiness and brother's bickering. Enjoy and please, please give me your feedback!

“Just leave it, baby” Tom calls out when I get up from the breakfast table taking the dishes to the sink to wash them.

“It’s fine, just a couple plates” I say already washing them. “You wanna go to the store now or later?”

“Let’s go now” Tom says.

“I call shotgun!” Harry announces.

“Absolutely not! I’m driving and(y/n)'s my-” I keep my ear open for the end of that sentence, which apparently won’t be coming out because Harry starts to laugh and I can tell Tom wants to kill him for that. I just shake my head and keep washing the plates, pretending I didn’t hear anything.

We go back to his room to brush our teeth before heading out and I consider changing my clothes, but decide this is fine (out of laziness). Tom changes into a pair of joggers and shirt, he looks like he’s going to work out, but handsome as always. I wonder if he’s going to wear the cap and sunglasses that he keeps on his car for quick disguise. He grabs his wallet and the car keys and we’re heading out when I remember my wallet.

“Hold on, forgot my wallet” I say going back the hallway.

“What you need your wallet for?” He asks when I get back, he was waiting for me at the end of the corridor. We go down the stairs, Harry is already there waiting, flipping through his phone.

“You see, a wallet is where you keep your money and these plastic card thingies, which are like money, but virtual. Money is something you need to give the people at the store-”

“Alright smart ass, I get it. You won’t need to buy anything, it’s what I’m saying”

“Please don’t get him started” Harry pleads with me when we get outside the door.

“What?” I laugh. Tom unlocks the car and I go straight to the backseat, trying to avoid another awkward sitting discussion.

“Tom insists he pays for everything around the house. Part of the reason why we go grocery shopping without him” Harry says from the front seat. “He’s pretty good at making money, got admit. But terrible at managing it, the lads don’t even pay rent!”

“Would you like to pay rent?” Tom asks, reversing the car and taking a glance at me, winking.

“I’m your brother! Dealing with you IS my rent” I laugh the whole way to the store at their banter about money, the radio, the car temperature. I catch glances at Tom through the rear mirror, smiling every time he sees me watching him.

“Why are we here? I though it was only food” Harry asks with an annoyed voice when Tom turned to get in a parking lot.

“We’re getting other stuff too” Tom explains, parking and getting out of the car, taking my hand. He didn’t get his cap and sunglasses. We left the car at a parking lot and walked to a discreet door that read ‘collect by car’, was this some kind of celebrity special entrance? We take an elevator and when it opens it’s like a mall, or a department store. A fancy Target, I’d say. ‘Marks & Spencer’. Uh…very British. Harry takes a cart and Tom gets another. I follow Tom but notice that Harry goes solo on his shopping trip. Tom’s still holding my hand and I look around to see if anyone’s watching but apparently not. “Let’s look at the blown dryers first, huh?” He says and I nod, following his lead.

When we get to the beauty tools section (is that what they call it?) Tom reaches for the fancy, expensive blow dryer models and I reach for the travel-sized ones. I look at him smiling. “You were thinking about getting a blown dryer for the house, weren’t you?”

“Weren’t you?”

“Tom, you’re seriously buying a blown dryer just because I asked to borrow one?” I laugh at him.

“I could use one too, you know? It’s not just for when you come around” He says in a tone that gives away he was thinking exactly the opposite.

“Okay then. Not that brand, though. This one” I put back the travel size and step closer to him to look at the models, reading the boxes and considering the options. When we settle for one he puts it on the cart and we keep walking through the store, reaching the products section. “Shampoo” I indicate, walking towards the shelf with all the options.

“Hi, can I help you guys?” A store attendant asks approaching us.

“Hi” I say smiling at her. “Just looking for some shampoo and conditioner”

“Something specific?”

“Not rubbish” Tom jokes. And she looks confused.

“He uses Head & Shoulders and is offended I called it rubbish” I explain to her laughing.

“Oh…that’s not good” She grimaces and Tom shakes his head.

“I know! Thank you! It doesn’t have to be anything fancy…I don’t know any of these brands though…” Me and the attendant start talking about shampoo and Tom zones out, looking around. When I finally pick one, along with conditioner, hair mask and styling gel I put it all in the cart and thank her. Tom was looking at a shelf with bath products, bath salts and bombs.

“Hi” I step to his side.

“Bath bomb? Doesn’t sound very relaxing” I laugh at that. Boys. When I was going to explain it to him two girls approach us.

“Hi, Tom!” One of them says, blushing furiously.

“Uh…hi!” He answers, slightly startled. “How’s it going?” He recovers his composure.

“Fine…Uh, is it ok if we ask you for a selfie?”

“Sure, no problem” He smiles. They look in between him and I.

“Could you take one, (y/n)?” Does she mean with me, or she want’s me to take the picture?

“Sure, give me your phone” I say reaching for her phone. And they laugh nervously.

“We meant with us”

“Oh, yeah” I laugh. “Course” Tom is watching and laughing at me. “But do you want me to take one of you guys with him too? So you don’t have only selfies”

“Oh would you? Thank you!” They say giving me their phones and posing along him. He keeps staring at you the whole time. I snap multiple pics with both phones and give them back to them.

“See what you think” I gave their phones back.

“Oh it’s great! Thank you”

“You didn’t even look at it. What if she’s a shitty photographer?” Tom laughs.

“Excuse me? I’m a great photographer” I answered him. “I bet the one’s you take won’t look so great” I said posing with the girls, who were just staring at the two of us in awe. I smiled while Tom snapped the pics and then he gave their phones back.

“Thank you!” One of them smiled.

“Yeah thank you!” They were walking away when one of them looked back and shouted. “You guys are really cute together!” And they sprinted away laughing.

“Teenagers” Tom says shaking his head and laughing.

“Don’t know, we ARE really cute together” You tease him, poking his side.

“I know, wasn’t disagreeing” He says defensively. “You can’t make every fan encounter this long though, or else you’re never gonna get anything done”

“Okay grandpa” You laugh. “Common, it didn’t even take that long”

“Not this time. Probably made their day, though” He says. “Just don’t get frustrated if every fan isn’t this nice”

“I don’t expect them to be. It’s just, they liked whatever we do and it’s part of their lives. Doesn’t cost anything to be nice, and besides, it’s a positive reinforcement. Next time they need courage to do something, it’ll be easier for them. People make too much fuss about celebrities, but like, asking a date out is way scarier and more common” Tom just smiled and shakes his head. “What?”

“I really love your mind, you know?”

“What did I said?”

“The positive reinforcement thing. I though you were going to say we’re leaving a good impression” You scoff.

“Bath bombs” I say trying to change the subject. “It’s like aspirin, for your bath. They’re really nice, wanna pick some?” He nods picking one up and trying to smell them. You guys joke around and pick some bath bombs as well as some bubbles and shower gel. “We got so much stuff” I say looking at the cart.

“Only essentials” He says and kiss me on the cheek. “I like this, get used to it”

“What?”

“Spoiling you. I’m like a sugar daddy”

“Oh my god, you didn’t just say that” I laugh. “That makes me a toiletries sugar baby” He laughs and pushes the cart along the corridor. We find Harry on the beverages section, picking up some beer boxes.

“So much for groceries” Tom says looking at his cart. Chips, candy, beer and milk. We get a few more items like some fruits and vegetables, yogurt, eggs and of course a bunch of ready meals, which seem to be a must for them.

“You guys don’t cook much, do you?” I joke.

“Only when Sam’s around. Which then he cook’s for us, of course” Harry answers and I laugh.

“Is he at school?” I ask.

“Cooking school. In Paris” Harry tells me, putting the groceries on the cashier belt.

“That’s so cool” I look at Tom. “That’s really cool”

“I know. Wait, are you really more impressed by my younger-chef-brother than my acting career?” He laughs.

“I mean…” I shrug and Harry laughs at us. We see a flash and turn our heads at the same time to the woman on the line behind us, who had her phone pointed to us. I look down and Tom puts his arm around me. “She’s taking pics” I whisper to him getting out of his embrace.

“So?” He says and puts his hand on my back, standing with his back to her in front of me. Harry hurries up and finishes putting the groceries on the belt, bagging everything up. I go to help him while Tom pays for our shopping. We put the stuff back on a cart and get out of the store. When we get out of the elevator and in the parking lot again, I hear Tom saying to Harry ‘Ride on the back now, yeah?’. We put everything on the trunk and Harry gets on the backseat, so I get on the passenger seat. Tom starts to drive and takes my hand laying on my thigh, he rubs his thumb over the back of my hand and I’m glad he’s being mindful because these encounters with paparazzi and random people taking pics really stress me out.

“I don’t really mind taking photos” I say out of the blue. “When they introduce themselves and ask for it”

“It’s so disrespectful, pisses me off” Harry agrees. “Like, you want a photo? Fine, just ask for it. You don’t simply snap photos of random people on the street, what makes you think you have the right to do it if you saw the person on a movie before?”

“We only saw that because the flash was on too. Makes me think of all the times I never see it. Like you’re always being watched. It’s…” Scary? Stressful? An invasion of privacy? All of the above?

“I’m sorry” Tom says, tightening his grip on my hand.

“It’s not your fault” I say.

“I’m still sorry” I give him a half smile. Nothing we can do about it, is there?

“Nice record Tom, where did you get it?” Harry asked lifting the Lime Cordiale record I bought Tom at Camden.

“That’s (y/n)'s” He says.

“I bought it for you” I smile.

“What? Did you?” I bit my lip smiling and nod. “I’m an idiot, sorry”

“That you are. An ungrateful idiot apparently” Harry says.

“It’s ok” I give Harry a glare. “It’s ok, really” I repeat looking over at Tom. “As long as you listen to them now”

“I will, promise” He smiles and lifts my hand to kiss it. Harry makes a gaging sound and I just laugh.

You mentioned that you've come to have more empathy for Yoday but still wouldn't recommend him as a direct master for anyone. What were/are your biggest issues with him? There are several I could guess, and probably some I agree with, but I don't want to assume.

Ahahahaha. I’m in a ranty mood this week, so it’s a great time to tackle this ask! Here’s more than anyone ever wanted to know about my Yoda Feels. 

My problems with Yoda come down to a couple things. 

We have entirely different learning/teaching styles. 

I have zero tolerance for cryptic shavit when there’s *actual communication* that needs to happen. 

A lot of Yoda’s behaviors make sense when viewed in the context of the PT but I formed most of my opinions based on the OT before the PT was a Thing. 

I don’t agree with the approach Yoda took in swanning off to Dagobah post RotS. AT ALL. 

Different Learning/Teaching Styles

(In ESB) Yoda very much follows the Greek and Buddhist styles of teaching where masters ask questions that don’t necessarily have solid answers. This is a valid style and something @atamascolily consistently captures gorgeously in her fics. It also absolutely makes me want to stab people. 

I’m like Mara Jade: a task-oriented learner. I want to know what I’m supposed to learning/mastering, why, how I’ll demonstrate success, and what the checkpoints are along the way. Meandering philosophical debates as part of an ill-defined training process are maddening. As noted, as I get older I am more accepting of this as a legit style and just not for me; this makes Yoda more sympathetic as a character but not any less annoying. 

Also, when Luke asks honest and reasonable questions in ESB (like “why”) Yoda shuts him down flat and I’m extremely not okay with that. Luke is being genuine and respectful despite his own frustrations and as someone who is committing his life to the Jedi path he has both a right and a need to know things. Demanding blind faith when there are or should be reasonable answers of some kind is Not Okay. 

Just Communicate Dammit!

With Ben Kenobi and Bail Organa gone, Yoda was the only person around holding a lot of key information. Did he share that information? Nope. He wandered around being a cryptic little troll “because Luke wasn’t ready” despite knowing full well that his health was failing. He gave Luke none of the information he actually needed to make informed decisions and didn’t even freaking write anything down!!  

From a Doylist perspective, this is obviously largely because George Lucas et al hadn’t figured out any of the backstory yet. From a Watsonian perspective, this is unforgivable. 

If your time is short (as his time with Luke was destined to be no matter how things went), it is critically important to be clear and use your time well. Yoda just didn’t. 

Obnoxious Troll vs Grandpa Frog

The PT very much sets Yoda up as Grandpa Frog, a beloved grandfather figure who teaches the younglings regularly and who everyone understands as mischievous but loving. Viewed in that sense, a lot of how he treats Luke in ESB makes sense… but it doesn’t make it okay. 

The younglings at the Temple literally grew up around the Force and Yoda. Luke did not. Luke didn’t even know WTF the Force was until he was almost 20. He got like 24 hours of introduction to it before Ben died. Compliments of Palpatine and the Purge and the war, there is almost no information available to him between ANH and ESB except what he figures out himself. Yet Yoda treats him like a disappointment and a failure for not understanding the scope of the Force and having doubts about its power. 

Guess what? If Luke had grown up in the Temple, yeah, he’d be all about raising X-wings out of swamps. But he didn’t. He grew on repressed for his own safety on a farm in the middle of nowhere without a hint of a clue. 

Now, through the lens of the PT, I can see Luke being a frustrating student for Yoda. He’s used to getting younglings who have been exposed to and trained in the Force by a range of other Jedi. Starting with an older student suffering from a ton of trauma and without any of the basics that he has to train in less than a fraction of the time shaping a Jedi would normally take is a massive undertaking and he’s old and tired besides. The whole family history with Vader wouldn’t make it any easier. 

But you know what? Luke is young. He left his found family in the middle of a war and is undergoing hugely stressful training in the middle of a swamp so that he can shoulder even bigger burdens. Yoda has had 20 years of (mostly) downtime to deal with his own trauma and at least several hundred years of practice being a teacher and a leader. He’s the one in a position to improve things and accommodate and he doesn’t. I’m not okay with that. 

Let’s Talk About That Downtime BTW

Again, from a Doylist perspective, I get why Yoda was hanging out on Dagobah, why he used things like visions to communicate with people like Kanan, Ezra, etc. periodically, and why he was Luke’s mentor in ESB/RotJ. 

From a Watsonian view, though, I’m not freaking impressed. He was the Grandmaster. He was heartbroken over the Jedi and Padawans he couldn’t save. But what did he do for the remaining ones spread across the galaxy? Shavit, that’s what. Kanan, Cal Kestis, Feris Olan, all the Jedi/Padawans who got kidnapped and twisted into Inquisitors — they were on their freaking own while Yoda swanned off to Dagobah. 

Oh, sure, he’d pop up in a vision here or there or whatever, but he had a safe place. And, apparently, the ability to reach at least some of them some of the time (see: visions and his connections to people like Bail Organa). Do I think any of those people probably wanted to live on Dagobah? Not particularly. But I think they’d have appreciated the safety and the chance to reconnect with what remained of their Jedi family, even if only briefly. 

But no. Yoda hangs out, waiting for the day the twins are old enough to take on the responsibility to kill Vader/Palpatine and then… does nothing?! He just keeps hanging out even after both Luke and Leia have lost everything, lets them get all settled into the Rebellion without a word, and THEN has the nerve to be cranky and disgruntled when he actually does get one of them to train!! 

YOU MADE CHOICES YOU LITTLE FROG TROLL. DON’T TAKE THEM OUT ON THE PEOPLE YOU DENIED CHOICES FOR 20 YEARS. 

I’m Not Entirely Without Compassion, I Swear

*sigh* I have seen a lot of Yoda meta in recent years that makes me appreciate Yoda for what he was during the PT. He really *was* everybody’s loving Grandpa who worked for centuries to love on the Jedi, protect them, and take care of them well. He legit wanted all of them to be happy and safe… and his suffering when the Purge happened must have been unimaginable. Like Luke and Leia, he lost everything. 

Unlike the twins, he didn’t get to rebuild or find a new family. While I believe what we have in the EU suggests he found peace and solace and a new home of Dagobah that was genuinely soothing to his wounded soul, he was alone and (whether he was or not) he did feel mostly helpless to do anything for his few scattered Jedi grandchildren who remained and suffered across the galaxy. He did face decisions in which there *weren’t* good, clear-cut answers. 

I think if I’d met him first in the PT or meta I might have liked him better. But I still wouldn’t ever recc him as a Master for any character I like because I can’t imagine learning under him being an experience I would ever wish on anyone simply based on my own vehement loathing for his personal teaching style. I know there are people in the world who would thrive on that approach and I like to think I’ve got a good imagination, but I simply can’t conceptualize it as a positive, productive experience.

But my biological brother (just gonna call him bb if I refer to him again) is not white, we have different dads. I’m very much white and he’s black? I don’t really know, never asked and didn’t really see it as something important. I love him for him, his skin color never mattered in that. But if I had to describe it he’s a lighter black, maybe Arabic or Cuban? And most of my friends throughout my whole time living where I do, most of my friends are black, or Hispanic. So, as you can assume, I have lots of sympathy for POC. I have no idea what it’s like and try to support my friend any time they are put down for their skin color. (I may or may not have punch a kid once cause he said a friend of mine was disgusting and should “go back to her sick country” cause she’s a Muslim, apparently the kids grandpa died in 9/11 so liek I guess I can see where it’s from but like, dude……)

So, when all the protests started at the begging of quarantine, my family talked a bit about it cause we had nothing else to do.

Twisted Fate/Graves thoughts 2 Electric Boogaloo because none of you can stop me

and I just have a lot of feelings okay

- t.f. taking an entire paragraph mid-fall during a harrowing life or death chase to give you the context for how much the imminent destruction of his boots is a  tragedy is the funniest and most endearing character detail and also irrefutable proof that despite appearances he, too, really does only have that half a brain cell, it simply pingpongs around in there much more than graves’ half (which instead finds one idea and GOES HARD for it no matter what lol bless him)   

also his pov is basically just a flippant ‘well this is a goddamn bitch of an unsatisfactory situation’ until graves literally forces him to have an honest emotion at gunpoint, and y’know... that be what love feels like sometimes when you’re like that as a person, extremely relatable, I feel for him so much

- I’m still just quietly astounded by the hmmm... implied intimacy? I guess? in the argument they’re having once they’re actually talking in burning tides. let’s look at what they’re actually saying to each other:     

T.F.: “Are you ever gonna learn? . . . Every time I try to help you, I-” and “ I tried to get us out. The rest of us saw the job was going south . . . But you wouldn’t back down. You never do.”

vs.

Graves: “You’ll run again. That’s all you’ve ever done.” and “You made out alright, though . . . You know why? It’s because you’re a coward. And nothing you’ll ever say can change that.” 

like them’s the sort of fraught fighting words you have with a spouse right towards the end of an ugly divorce, the full fruitless ‘why do you always have to --’ and ‘but you never listen to me!!!’ deal, especially from graves’ side lol. it’s the sort of hurtful you can really only be with someone you’ve been very, very close to, someone you know incredibly well. considering the whole backstory what graves is essentially saying here is ‘It’s your own fault people have left you; you deserve to be alone’.

(interestingly, in twisted fate’s pov it seems that what’s really messing with him is the part of not being listened to. he tried to plead with his family and they refused to listen, he tried to convince graves to run away with the rest of them and he didn’t listen, and here they are again and graves isn’t listening  a g a i n  and at that point t.f. clearly just sort of. gives up on actually being heard, in a slightly heartbreaking way. and from how graves reacts to seeing that I really think he’s not naturally cruel like that at all, he’s just in too much pain to think until this startles him out of it and then he does actually listen)

- through both stories graves is so desperately, enduringly horny for t.f. to be emotionally present and engaged with him without slipping away into his ~*cool magic gambler*~ persona and I find it weirdly sweet 

- graves immediately getting fond of this leaky battered old rowboat... hfsadkjfhasd he’s sort of adorable in a way? it’s also really cute how he’s got this really tight focus on tf and his mannerisms and how genuine he’s being at any given moment. it’s such a neat way to show what he’s feeling and thinking about, which must be hard with a character who’s so massively oblivious to the finer points of his own inner life lol  

ALSO can we talk about how tf literally winks at him at one point, right after they’ve sort of had a little moment of regained trust... like my good sir that is so deeply unnecessarily saucy of you, please control yourself (though in his defense graves somehow still isn’t picking up what he’s putting down so y’know maybe subtle isn’t the way to go here anyway haha)

- I wonder if t.f. used to go by his initials even before he changed his name -- graves calls him by it straight off the bat in burning tides and t.f. seems to consider his real name mildly embarrassing lol. (also intriguing that he does appear to think of it as his ‘real name’, and not ‘old name’ or something like that. it’s why I feel like we’ve got more of a dual identity going on here than a deadname situation, it feels more like two distinct levels of emotional vulnerability/availability to me. and so ‘tobias’ stops being relevant when there’s no one left to know him as that. ow.)    

- from reading his bio it seems like twisted fate has had to figure out a lot of the magic stuff on his own (except for the mention of his grandpa teaching him the fortune telling part of it -- seems like they had a bit of a special connection, really, if him leaving his old cards with the kid before they left is anything to go by). what I’m saying is that I would read thousands upon thousands of words of him experimenting with it when they were younger and graves hurriedly having to topple a table over and pull them both behind it for cover before they both explode lol 

(and then t.f. popping his head up afterwards like ‘hAH see I TOLD you I could do it!’ and graves disconsolately lighting a cigar from the burning rubble b/c the things one does for love partnerships huh)

- I’ve been looking over burning tides with a writing eye a few times to figure out what makes it work so well for me, and one of the things I really like is that there are a lot of small comments/details that are there or are framed in a certain way specifically to emphasize the familiarity and history between the characters. Just small details like He moves fast for a big man. I’d forgotten that and graves mentioning he’s never liked standing too close when t.f. does the teleporting thing -- not to mention t.f.’s name reveal, which if I understand this correctly was actually new information to the readers when burning tides was going on. (and yes it is still very funny to me that his actual name is tobias. the duality of man)   

(I also feel like there are HUGE differences in writing quality between the different POV sections -- I guess different people wrote for the different characters? Well, both of the first person sections are gold and that’s what matters to me in this story so I don’t really mind. Sadly the Miss Fortune parts read the weirdest and stiffest to me, which is unfortunate b/c I love her lore concept a lot and she’s so cool in double double-cross. WHO the fuck let an unironic ‘the crimson-haired siren’ slip through the edit, is what I really want to know. please, narrator, tell me about her cerulean orbs while you’re at it) 

- The man I used to know seems lost under years of hatred.

I don’t try to say anything else. I can see it in his eyes, now. Something’s broken inside of him.

still makes me SO SAD and I’m incredibly happy it turns out not to be true in the end thank GOD

- this might just be me reading into stuff too much, but I really like this sense that in moments of high emotion/genuine vulnerability, graves tends to sound older and more tired while t.f. sounds younger than he actually is, more frightened and hurt

- if his mind hadn’t been completely focused on partner-rescuing and open murder were in any way his style, t.f. totally could have killed gangplank right there and then before miss fortune even got to blow the fucker up haha. then again if that were the sort of guy he were he’d be dead along with all the rest of them

- it’s so good that graves tries to save miss fortune’s guy before they leave the cave but also isn’t broken up about it when it turns out he can’t, that feels like such a correct encapsulation of his moral character haha

- I really do enjoy graves’ POV so much not just because there’s something immensely comforting about how he refuses to be scared even in the face of death because he’s too damn grouchy and won’t give the world the satisfaction, but also because the language/cadence is so satisfying. he does have a way with words, in a gruff non-flashy sort of way.

It smells like the end of everything – sulfur and ash and death; cooked hair and melting skin -- the rhythm of that is so gooood and that whole section conveys the horror and destruction but also the awe of the scene so well. (I’m telling you graves isn’t actually dumb at all, just astoundingly unbendingly single minded once he’s got an idea in his head lol) 

- I keep thinking about the fact that the last two things twisted fate thinks about before he passes out from drowning is if graves is scared and ‘What would Malcolm do?’ and I’m feeling real 😭😭😭 about it

- I’m still so disproportionately intrigued by graves mentioning his mom in burning tides. considering how early and seemingly easily he left home (...not to mention that he brings her up in connection with someone punching him in the face) it might be a safe bet that they weren’t that close but like. she also seems to be one of the very very few non-revengy things he’s checked up on after getting out of prison. did he send money home sometimes? would he visit whenever they came back to bilgewater? did she ever meet t.f. and if so did she approve or was this a bit of a uncharmable mother in law from hell situation? I um. I want to know these things pls riot it’s for science

Japan Sinks: 2020 freaking sucked, but in a way that was almost good, which is arguably even more frustrating than it being straight-up awful.  Like, there was this good show struggling to get out, but it just couldn’t quite break free of all the crap.  Sorry, has to get that off my chest.  I’m done now.

...Never mind, I’m not done.  Spoilers below the cut.

Here’s a list of my major grievances with the series (there are more, but this got kind of long):

There was almost no chemistry between the characters.  A lot of the story centers around this family and a handful of tagalongs, but you hardly get the sense that they care about each other at all.  Emotional crises about character death (of which there is a LOT; more on that later) go barely-addressed, if they indeed happen at all.  One of the earliest deaths involves the father getting literally blown to bits in front of his family, and then they skip ahead to them moving on in the next episode.  The only one who still seems even remotely upset is the teenage girl.  Not even the little boy seems bothered; I don’t think I can remember him crying a single time in the entire series.  I get what they were TRYING to go for - the mother is upset, but she’s trying to stay strong for her children because she knows that stopping to mourn could get them killed - but instead it just comes across as all of the characters being robots except for the teenager.  I think one of the problems was that there’s not much depth of emotion in the facial expressions.  Almost nothing is expressed through animation that isn’t expressed in words, so if the characters aren’t talking about how sad they are, you have no idea.  Another character dies pretty unceremoniously in a way that’s clearly intended to make the teenager feel guilty despite her not technically being responsible, but they just leave her body behind, and she’s practically never brought up again.  Speaking of...

There aren’t any long-term consequences for any of the things they build up.  Early on, the teenage girl offers to share some of her water with an elderly couple, who proceed to take the whole bottle.  It was a really good, realistic scene, and it leaves you thinking, “Shit, that’s gonna come back to bite them in the ass later!” and it never does.  They find more water almost immediately.  Additionally, throughout the series, there’s also this looming threat posed by a cut on the teenage girl’s leg that’s clearly becoming more and more infected over time - the camera is constantly lingering on this injury like it’s gonna be a big deal - and it doesn’t become a real issue until after they’re rescued.  And even then, you think you’re in for some real emotional drama when the doctor says they have to amputate - the teenager is a relay racer, so losing her leg is a big fucking deal - but the next time you see her, we’ve already skipped ahead to the part where she’s running relay races with a prosthetic.  Like, that’s great and all, but come ON!  You spent the WHOLE SERIES building to this, and you can’t spare a couple minutes to let us feel anything?

We get almost zero insight into the backgrounds of most of the characters.  Like, we already know most of the family’s deal from their introductions in episode 1, but then they give us all these tagalongs who seem like they COULD be interesting people (an older girl who seems to be a friend of the family, a stoic former athlete, a paragliding Youtuber, an old man who does archery, and an obnoxious magician), but they almost never expand on any of it!  The older girl?  She dies unceremoniously and is mentioned maybe one time after that a few episodes later.  The stoic former athlete?  He finally breaks down in tears at one point about how he watched his mother die in front of him only for the rest of these seemingly heartless assholes to continue on with their dinnertime conversation without giving this dude so much as a comforting pat on the shoulder.  The Youtuber?  It’s briefly hinted at the end that he’s a trans guy in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment of his younger self in a skirt (from a distance, so it’s hard to notice) with longer hair, but other than that, we have almost no insight into who he is as a person, what got him interested in flying and Youtube, etc.  Speaking of which...

The Youtuber is basically a living deus ex machina who exists only to occasionally disappear and inexplicably reappear with no explanation and some supplies to save the day.  His habit of constantly saving the day combined with the fact that in a cast of characters with realistic hair colors, he’s the only one whose hair is white (and it seems to be natural, not dye; his younger self also has white hair, and at no point in the series do his roots start to show) makes him feel more like somebody’s self-insert OC than a real person.  He even pulls a heroic sacrifice to save the characters at the end only to mysteriously wind up alive in the stadium to watch the teenage girl do relay post-amputation with zero explanation.  Like, don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the trans guy survived to the end, but could you please tell us HOW?

The time that could have been spent on character development is instead spent on a pointless cult subplot that lasts way too many episodes, accomplishes almost nothing except letting us trade in the racist archery grandpa and the annoying magician for the paralyzed savant who saw the disaster coming (again, these brief character descriptions make them sound much more interesting than they ultimately wind up being).  In yet another plot point with lots of build-up and no follow-through, we wind up in a peaceful, too-good-to-be-true cult where they put weed in everything and worship a lady claiming to be able to speak with the dead.  Are they using the drugs to manipulate people?  Is this some kind of cannibal cult where they use pot to cover up the taste of people?  Nope!  The twist is that the cult was genuinely a nice place, the leader’s powers are 100% real, and the drug stuff is completely inconsequential.  The final episode of this arc winds up being unintentionally hilarious as a bunch of characters get killed off in ways that are either overly anime for what was previously a relatively grounded show, or die in a realistic manner that’s nonetheless animated in a way that makes it completely hilarious.  I literally laughed out at the death of the cult leader’s child.  Like, I understood it was SUPPOSED to be sad, but it’s just so sudden that it winds up being hilarious.  One minute he’s standing there, and the next, BONK!  Death by ceiling chunk to the head.  (This is why most deaths by crushing/impact from above tend to be animated in a way that obscures the character’s face, BTW.)

There are too many character deaths.  There’s a big difference between “anyone CAN die” and “almost everyone WILL die.”  The first creates genuine tension, because you truly never know whether or not a character will survive a dangerous situation.  Allowing you to feel hope that a character could pull through makes it all the more impactful if they don’t.  Unfortunately, Japan Sinks: 2020 goes too far by practically killing off one character an episode, which winds up ruining the tension by ensuring that you never get attached to these characters (which you were already struggling to get attached to due to their complete lack of emotion).  Dangerous situations are no longer tense because you already know from the time the character enters them that they’re probably gonna die.  (Unless they’re the Youtuber guy, in which case a nuclear bomb could go off, and they’d just reappear two episodes later with no explanation.)

The show just doesn’t know what it wants to be.  It starts out really grounded and realistic, and it leads you to believe that this is going to be something truly incredible, but after about four episodes, you start to realize that this is just The Walking Dead without zombies.  Worst of all, it’s Telltale’s Walking Dead (the sequels, not the first one) where almost none of the choices the characters make actually matter.  They try really hard to salvage it at the end, and it NEARLY works.  Episode 8 (where they’re stuck in a life raft without any food or water for the first half) was almost worth the previous 7, but it’s just not enough.  You still know exactly when characters are gonna die, and it’s too late to get invested.

With Kindom Hearts being officialy released in japan I thought it would be nice to share my old messy wishlist for the game:

- Japanese dub

- Playable worlds: Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Tangled, Shibuya, Destiny Island, Illusiopolis

- Playable characters: Riku, Kairi, maybe Axel?

- A new outfit for Axel.

- Some backstory for Demyx, Luxord, Marluxia and Larxene. (I was really hoping 358/2 would give us that) especialy for Demyx cause he’s a loveable lazy dork.

- For Pat to carry Maleficent bridal style and run away from the comic relief life they suffer since KH2. I’m sorry Maleficent you’re just a big joke.

- Final Fantasy: FF9 characters! But not Vivi, that thing never existed, it wasn’t Vivi. Plus some resolution regarding Cloud and Zack.

- Consequences and actual characters death though I know I will regret this if it happens. I CHANGED MY MIND PLEASE DON’T KILL ANYONE JUST GIVE US A HAPPY DISNEY ENDING WHERE ONLY THE EVIL GRANDPA DIES PLEASE I LOVE THEM DON’T KILL THEM!!

- For Kairi to have a nice character arc or something, just let her be useful and not just a (very unbelievable btw) love interest. Please SE. I just. Please, let the girl be a good character, let me love her.

- Actual bonding time between Kairi and other characters that are not Sora. Especially Axel and Riku.

- Same for Riku.

- And let’s be crazy, a true believable relationship between Sora and Kairi.

- If the first game ended with Kairi drawing a paopu, and the second with Sora seeing it, does that mean the third should end with Sora sharing a paopu with Riku? ...what do you mean I wrote the wrong name

- FOR THIS GAME TO BE THE LAST ONE! Come on I don't want to turn 40 and still be waiting to know how this story end...

Pretty sure I forgot a few things but well, we already know lot of those things won’t come true anyway.

First: I wanted to just write a short notice, but then I ended up deciding to write in more detail... so this is gonna be long... 

Some/A few of you know this already, and some/a few knew of this impending event. But most do not/did not, because I don’t actually post that many personal details. (because I don’t want to, and I will most likely not post about it in the future either) 

My dad died last Friday (Jan 27th, 2017) at the age of 64 from complications of his cancer. (that’s why THIS post) The funeral is on Thursday February 2nd. It will be a traditional caskett funeral. And it’ll be in the countryside - the only cemetery in the county  - it’s just 10km from the house/village, as per wish/request. 

Please DO NOT write me any comments, replies, messages with any “positive thoughts” or “condol...”, thank you. That is my personal request for this post.

Yes, it is a sad event, but we’ve all known that this was his last year, as he had end stage cancer and the past month (last 3 weeks especially) his life was not what I personally consider living. While he was not in a vegetative state, and while he was also not bed-bound (he still moved around... but in his own pace and way and who knows with how much pain, really) So while it was “sudden” it was expected. 

And he got 5 "extra years ”, because the event that lead to his diagnosis (cause “tough men from countryside” don’t go to the doc for checkups... and that’s why our neighbour/my childhood friends dad died of cancer in 2014...just 5 months after his diagnosis... ) was the last emergency that landed him to a hospital. He would’ve died back then, but because our modern medicine brings back everyone (anyone, who does not have a very specific request in place - DNR, etc), so when he “died” on the operation table back then, he was revived, but since he was too weak (his body/brain would’ve not ben able to take it) he was put to medical coma, but he also survived that as the third attempt (after about a week in coma) was successful and he woke up. And interestingly his brain did not have any damage...and his mind was clear (til the end...til now). But he did  age ~20 years (in looks) after that... Either way... that event lead to finding the tumor, so after several weeks in ICU and some more in hospital...and rehabilitation... his cancer treatments started.

As anyone who knows anything about cancer knows, cancer is not a specific “illness”, it is many things (a combination of diseases). And you don’t actually die from “cancer”, but other things and complications of cancer.  Same with my dad. It was a combination of things. In kiddie terms what finally did it was: “one of his internal organs broke” and that was the specific reason. 

He was diagnosed 5 years ago, in 2011... with stage 3 lung cancer. The eventual result of being a life-time (chain) smoker. Yes, smoking (often) kills you...even if it takes 40 years. Plus he had a separate cancer form, too (not met). And he wasn’t in good health otherwise either - he walked around with a cane because one of his legs didn’t work (he only used the crutches rarely, and wheelchair was a no-no... in his opinion.)  And he went through all the possible treatments - chemo, radiation, surgery. And he survived those, but it was never about cure in his case, but more managing it. Palliative care as it is known in medical terms. 

In 2016 he got worse and by the end of the year his stage 4 cancer had “spread” and the bone mets (bone metastasis..in his case to the spine) got so bad that trying to lift a 5kg bag of potatoes landed him in hospital a few months ago. Basically his last few months he was very weak and moving was exhausting for his body. Also...bone mets means bone pain. I have no idea how bad his pains must’ve been (I’ve injured my lower back - muscle/ligaments strain and that felt like I was cut in two and I couldn’t move, or stand or sit or anything... but my experience probably was nothing compared to his back/bone pain...)

He chose to stay at home til the end, but he did choose to take all the meds and treatments. He refused staying in the hospital, as many older people do. So the needed “medical equipment” had to be brought home to him...for the last 2 months (ever since his last hospital stay) Hence THIS post. Same with work... ever since his retirement he has still worked...from home. As an accountant (my dad was a math and numbers guy, his degrees are in math and economics), and he continued working til the end, he still had one client and he was working on this months things...

He died in a hospital, where he was taken on Friday due to an emergency, and this time his body was too weak to take it. He was gone the same evening. (I did not make it to the hospital this time, most of us didn’t, but I already did all that 5 years ago, when he was in ICU - in coma)

PS. I myself am a supporter of DNR and I personally also support the medical aid to end sufferings (that is legal in some countries and states), and so on. You do not have to agree with me. This is just my personal take on this issue. Because I believe it to be more humane. And I have also decided on those options for myself (and while I do understand the oaths that medical staff take I sincerely hope that when it’s my day those personal preferences are taken into consideration). So as sad as death is, in this case, for example, I am glad he did not suffer any longer. (it was really bad since early December, so it was for about 8 weeks...). It was known since December that he has an average of 6 months left. So yes, we all knew the day was close.  

PPS. The kids also know... they were told on Saturday, and so far so good. (young kids don’t know yet how to process death, so they may need a bit “help” with their “grief”). But then again...they only knew the sick grandpa - they didn’t know him before. We will see how they react on Thursday. I remember my own grandpas funeral (my mom’s dad) - he died young, too, at age 66, and I was a kid, but I was ~10 already, but my cousin was only 5, and I remember her reaction - she was “ok” until the box went into the ground (and since everyone reacts and grieves differently, it’s all ok. But thanks to remembering my cousin I know what possibly to expect). My grandfathers funeral, btw, is one of the first times I truly realized that my brain is not like others. Cause I had the opportunity to observe humans and their emotions and reactions, and without going into details I learned a lot about how I process things vs how “normals” process things that day.
