BIG EMPHASIS ON THE NOTION THAT HEARING AIDS RESTORE HEARING TO 100%. THEY DO NOT literally theres only so much sound that can be amplified before it just becomes uncomfortable or useless.

the way that this show has absolutely refused to accommodate matt is infuriating.

I am not Deaf/HOH but know a lot of folks who are and in knowing them have come to learn a lot, which I’m really grateful for! I realize that not everyone has had that opportunity, but at the very least on the production side, it is unacceptable not to have preemptively done the work to avoid certain unnecessary situations. By refusing to provide things like live closed captioning BB is directly contributing to the misguided idea that an accommodation=an advantage (not true) when in fact they are creating a MORE unfair situation by doing so.

And these houseguests are not entirely blameless either. It is understandable that when you’re getting used to a new way of communicating that you might slip up and forget sometimes which, imo, can be forgiven. I also think a lot of folks are under the impression that a hearing aid provides 100% hearing or even some kind of “superhuman” hearing, and that’s just not accurate. Like I said though, it’s a learning experience for most people and I get that, and I would hope that most people are open to that. And while a lack of prior knowledge is understandable, at this point to just not even TRY to remember to look at a person when you’re speaking to them when you have been told they CANNOT HEAR YOU unless you do so it just so ????

Hi there!! I hope that this is okay to ask, but could you talk about what hearing aids assist you with? I'm questioning if they might help me, but idk if I should bring it up with my doctor yet cause I'm still doing research.

How do hearing aids benefit you and your audio processing disorder? :)

Great question! As a brief rundown, for those unfamiliar, auditory processing disorder (APD) is a disorder where the ears hear sounds fine (sometimes better than fine!) but the brain scrambles the auditory information, which can cause a person to mishear words (e.g last week at jujitsu, Sensei said, “Everybody on the mats” and I heard, “Everybody um the nuts”. I figured out what he meant by watching everyone else, because I knew that what I heard didn’t make sense as a thing for him to say!)

APD can also include sensory overload from auditory input, and often makes being in crowded public spaces super overwhelming. Trying to understand more than one person talking at a time, or listening to someone with noise in the background, are also really hard!

These days, there are special hearing aids called low-gain hearing aids, that a person with APD can use to filter out certain sounds, and enhance others. Most hearing aids connect to an app on your phone, and can be adjusted via Bluetooth to increase or decrease the volume and sharpness of certain sounds. The “low gain” means the volume amplification is minimal, for people who don’t have hearing loss. They clarify sounds without just making them unnecessarily louder.

I got low-gain hearing aids about a year ago. I had to go to an audiology specialist to diagnose my APD, since most typical audiologists don’t know much about it and can’t test for it.

When I got the diagnosis, I spoke to a regular audiologist, who set me up with low gain hearing aids. Mine are Phonak. I’ll admit that I don’t wear them as often as I should, because I have sensory difficulties with the wires in my ears, and the part that hooks over the backs of my ears makes them sore. When I do wear them however, they definitely make it easier to understand what people are saying, and I don’t misinterpret them as talking randomly about nuts!

so, i found out yesterday at my doctors appointment that i:

1. most likely have POTS

2. have moderate to mild hearing loss

3. will need to see someone about my chronic pain as it's pretty severe

before the appointment, i wrote down all my symptoms that indicate POTS, and the list ended up being roughly 4 pages long

the doctor read through every single symptom i had, asked more thorough questions, then gave me referrals to cardiology! she said it sounds very likely that i have POTS, and that i should definitely see someone soon as my symptoms/chronic pain are really severe

she also listened to me and gave me referrals to audiology when i told her about my hearing problems! she actually had me take a hearing test right there at the office, and my hearing loss was between moderate and mild, at 35 decibels (some sources say thats only mild, while others say its between moderate and mild). not the worst, but definitely enough that it impacts me on a daily basis. im going to get otc hearing aids for now until i can see an audiologist and see if those help at all!

and!! i got referrals for neurology, as my fainting/migraines/possible dissociative seizures are definitely something worth looking into!

overall, the appointment was absolutely wonderful! the staff was amazing and listened patiently to all my problems and took me very seriously! i was so happy that i wasn't dismissed this time!!

i can't wait to see cardiology and audiology, those are the ones im most excited to get answers from

so yeah! hopefully i can get appointments in this year and see everyone i need to!

Got out of urgent care about as fast as I could, which was nice. The doctor that saw me had to call the on-call ENT because she didn't see any inflammation or fluid build up in my ear. They said it could be a nerve inflammation so they're giving me steroids, but I also got urgent referrals to ENT and Audiology. Which means they'll call me within 3 business days to get in.

Currently waiting at the pharmacy and then going home.
