Following TDH13, Claire and Norma set out to find the people in her dream she had whilst under a seizure. First up: Brooklynn. Now, this is placed strangely as it's requiring both brooklynn and darius reunited and is loosely tied in, and a buyer ended up dead in a very terrible way. They step through a rift into a room in which the jurassic duo were returning from a walk, which sparks a conservation about breaking in, without breaking anything. Eventually, everyone calms down, and they speak about what's been happening. Norma begins by saying what she saw as well as brooklynn being present in some of them, and claire backs up the claim by experimental shadow magic and shows the dreams and knowledge she learned in Lloyd's head.

Brooklynn confirms she was present in 2008 and was in the outer huddle when the daleks "exterminated them" but remembers how they survived, confused the daleks themselves as not even the doctor could fully. Well, they did black out temporarily for a nice huddle on the floor, used in a video of hers for a how to make a good story video, and no-one knew anything: not darius, sammy nor roxie. Lloyd helped with the actual videos behind the scenes and left unlisted videos of his reach and life. When he arrived in dec 2014, which was 2 years earlier for him, he had a lovely Christmas with her family, but rather focused on making her happy - something her parents didn't fully understand yet. He showed her a video, which was dated on the same day, Nemesis talked to him, in which he started to lose control of his powers already. He quoted after the events of the camp: "sinkholes make friendships. She finally opened up and was able to make friends, so he may have flipped her father, who said it couldn't be done. Roxie would've made claire go uncanny, yaz's determination, ben's upgrade, the park needed better advisors, cardboard cutouts save lives, neochrome, somehow got her out of jail time for insulting the queen with dropping a scone at a tea party. Could be seen in the k-pop video and being a very good assistant who actually cared about the band. People underthink things. Referenced vorkuta steps but used steps they took instead (darius chuckles) badass gyrosphereing etc." Claire is shocked at how much she doesn't know about Lloyd, to which brooklynn remarks she doesn't know the half of it.

A shrill sound starts a panic as darius tells them what killed one of the buyers: hybrid humans. Norma knows they were featured in HHN12, but they surely couldn't be real, even after encountering oddfellow at dead end park. But it's confirmed as they begin to chase them, and claire loses her Papa skull jacket, which makes her mad enough to hold them back for a minute whilst darius adapts his dinosaur knowledge and defeats them by combining them. Brooklynn finds her old pink jacket, but briefly is feeling taunted by the dual sleeve, but darius helps to confide her enough to put it on, and grew a chromatic hand whilst wearing the jacket. They are offered to follow them to their next destination in which after notifying their squad, follow after them.

One last bit to round out here: Lloyd trusted brooklynn more due to her social isolation which helped when he sent a series of worrying audio and video recordings between 2017-2019. Apparently she heard Lloyd's accounts of camp redwood, losing his love to the demon headmaster, and something that confirms the car norma saw on fire holds very important significance and could hear such emotional pain. The last time he contacted her, he sent a recording of a strange place where he did something before collapsing and hearing two days of sadness, especially that of a particular adventurer...

As Hollywood contemplates the risks and uncertainties around going back into production in the coming months after coronavirus-imposed shutdowns, strategies for scaled-back sets are beginning to emerge. Producers Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Chris Ferguson — from the companies Automatik (“Honey Boy,” “Bad Education”) and Oddfellows (“Child’s Play”), respectively — have created a proposal titled “Isolation Based Production Plan,” which Variety has obtained.

They began working on it weeks ago, sending versions of the multi-page document to colleagues and industry friends asking for feedback about what in the plan would and would not work. It would be most directly applicable to lower-to-mid-budget movies, but elements of it could be used for other types of productions. The proposal — surely one of many being worked on at studios and production companies in the entertainment industry — sheds light on what types of precautions will need to be taken, and what sacrifices might have to be made for Hollywood to get back to work after the production shutdown that occurred en masse in mid-March.

Kavanaugh-Jones and Ferguson spoke with Variety reluctantly about the plan, because of the sensitivities around scaled-down sets, particularly with unions. They also expressed qualms about speaking out in the current environment, when the idea of going back to work has been politicized, becoming yet another toxic division in the United States. “I wouldn’t want to be misconstrued as advocating for the reopening of production,” Ferguson said. “We’re just building ideas around maybe what could happen when it feels like the right thing.”

They emphasized that their two companies have no timetables to get back into production, and said that the copy of the plan was the fourth or fifth draft of it. Ferguson called it “a living, breathing document.”

The document, as it stands, would require entire production teams to follow stringent rules to minimize the spread of the coronavirus. The entire cast and crew would be in a two-week quarantine before they would begin production, and would be tested. It’s not laid out in the plan, but Kavanaugh-Jones said he envisions treating the production like one in a “distant location,” where “a small crew takes over a hotel that has been aggressively cleaned, and they live there full-time completely quarantined.”

After they complete their quarantine, the proposal lays out that they will be divided into three pods: Pod 1 would be the on-set cast and crew, Pod 2 is base camp (makeup and hair, catering) and Pod 3 is set design/prep. Pod 1 would be a minimum of 17 people, plus the cast — including a director, cinematographer and one on-set producer. Any stunts or VFX supervisors would be additional members of the on-set crew. “I think what we tried to do was apply the indie model to this document,” Kavanaugh-Jones said.

He acknowledged that many actors, directors and other members of production would not want to do it. But others might: “I think there are going to be some people that say, ‘Yeah, I’m up for it. I’ll go self-isolate in a hotel room for 14 days, and have my food delivered by a specific delivery service and wipe everything down and be really aggressive about that, so that on day 15, I can go shoot something with my coworker-slash-castmate who’s done the same.”

In the proposal, costumes, props and sets would also be put in quarantine. Locations and sets would be dressed, and then sealed for three days (or whatever the most conservative estimate is) “to allow viruses on surfaces to die.”

Each pod would have a position called a “quarantine supervisor.” The document contains a job description: “They will each be responsible for supervising and enforcing quarantine and disinfecting protocols. They will also be regularly disinfecting and cleaning common surfaces throughout the day. The Quarantine Supervisor will also check in with each crew member in their pod and check their temperatures.”

The job of quarantine supervisor is, Kavanaugh-Jones said, a “made-up role.” They don’t expect doctors or nurses to take on those responsibilities: “Those folks need to be working at hospitals right now,” he said. Ideally, they said, quarantine supervisors would be unionized health-related specialists with extra training specific to COVID-19.

The production, according to this plan, would also have remote staff, such as the line producer, production manager, buyers and post-production staff (editor, composer, sound mixer).

The changes to production in this plan would be profound, and aesthetics would be affected as well. Hair and makeup, usually a department working on multiple actors at once, would be a single person working on one actor at a time — and not on set. “Makeup application tools & supplies will be purchased per cast member and used only on that individual cast member,” the plan states. “These supplies will be kept in individual cast bags. Cast will remove their own makeup to limit contact at the end of the day.”

Throughout the interview, Kavanaugh-Jones and Ferguson mentioned the types of movies that could be made under these strictures. “Could you go make ‘Avengers’ on this kind of production plan? No,” Kavanaugh-Jones said. “Could you go make ‘127 Hours’? Yes.” Ferguson added that a movie like “300,” Zack Snyder’s effects-heavy 2007 film, something that put “a lot more weight onto post production rather than physical production” could also be produced within these rules.

One dictate of the proposal is that “scripts must be developed and modified to minimize day players” because “there will be no day players” — which would be a huge change for the industry, if implemented widely. The iconic Australian soap opera “Neighbours,” produced by Fremantle Australia, is starting up again next week, without extras and day players. According to the Deadline report about “Neighbours,” the show will use “crew members already on set doubling as background performers,” inflaming several readers in the comments section, who cited SAG-AFTRA’s rules against such things. (SAG-AFTRA does not have jurisdiction over Australian productions. Without seeing this plan’s specifics, David P. White, national executive director, SAG-AFTRA, told Variety: “We have deep concerns about any premature effort to commence production without appropriate safety protocols in place. We will continue our collaboration with industry representatives to develop a responsible plan for a safe return to work, and will aggressively protect SAG-AFTRA’s jurisdiction.”

Additionally, the plan’s proposed bare-bones crew will surely agitate IATSE, the union that represents below-the-line workers — nearly all of whom are out of work right now. But Ferguson and Kavanaugh-Jones emphasize they want to adhere to union rules, and the proposal has a provision to make sure that’s clear: “The production will have to budget for additional days of crew members who will not actually be called to work in order to comply with their jurisdiction’s regulations around minimum hire,” it reads. (IATSE did not immediately respond to a request for comment.)

Additionally, the plan proposes that “shoot days” will be limited to “10-hour days.” Ferguson said that aspect is crucial, because with long days “it’s just going to be impossible to not get sloppy.”

Yes, these things — the 10-hour days, paying crew members not to work — would cost more, Kavanaugh-Jones said: “Everything in that document, everything we’re thinking about is how to prioritize safety over everything else. And if that means that things are going to cost a little bit more or extend a little longer, we’ll just have to decide if that’s possible or not.” Productions in France, he added, have worked 9 1/2-hour days for years.

Whether insurance companies will take a chance on any productions is an open question, and whether financiers would still back a film insured except for a COVID-19 cutout is also a huge question mark. “So how much collective risk are we willing to take as a community?” Kavanaugh-Jones wondered. “That’s going to be the question over the next coming months.”

As for when production might begin again, every answer is imaginary. Whether it’s July, like the TV networks hope it can be, or August or September — no one knows. “Neighbours” starting up again, and film and television production resuming in Sweden and Denmark recently will certainly provide test cases — not cautionary tales, one hopes.

“There is going to be real change and upheaval through all of this, and people are going to have to get really creative and smart,” Kavanaugh-Jones said. “It’s so devastating for so many people. And ultimately that’s the goal of the document — to start the conversation about getting people back to work.”

Custom dead end episode 8/9: The 30th Cycle

Today's the big day. Dead end nights 30 begins, and everyone's on hand to finalise the set designs and all. Amongst them, badyah's etching the symbol secretly on some props, making a presence looming greater. Barborah is greeting the media, as is norma (to the best of her abilities) with barney as a mascot promoting the new additions. On a bench, someone's reading the leaflet, noticing the symbol etched in, putting it down, revealing that Lloyd's reading it.

As the park prepares to open the event, an event helper is trying to get all guests to the opening ceremony, when the person notes in a shadowed area an Injured guest, when in reality, harmony's there and takes the person's fear. Shortly after, the gates open as Lloyd sneaks in, and the house calls norma into unexplored areas. When logs notices Lloyd, he hesitates on calling security until he says everyone's in danger as that symbol means he's near. Norma enters a new area of the house that's been long forgotten, with cobwebs and a low light candle that flickers to glow bonapart's necklacey thing (I think it's a choker) as if it wants norma to wear it. Hours pass, and the event's going well with the absence of badyah, which logs decides to check. Logs follows badyah to a nearby alley whilst everyone's in one place, so Lloyd begins making his mark on a nearby television and seemingly pulling through the static for something.

Logs sees badyah, Harmony, and Dr oddfellow as they prepare to strike, asking her if the props needed have his symbol, which she confirms. Harmony tells her to grab his gift to Oddfellow. To remain safe, he decides to hide in a barrel and send Lloyd a text as suddenly Oddfellow and Harmony strike the crowd, and badyah rushes norma to a 'safe space'. From the lamppost, Lloyd summons light projectiles to try splitting them apart, before deciding shadow magic is needed, summoning a portal that sends several tourists to a safe area before Harmony gets a hold of him, the other large group of tourists and the other staff, except barney and norma. Badyah lets norma feel safe until harmony arrives to grab her and drag her out in view of everyone, and oddfellow is pleased with him enough he hands harmony a knife saying he can finally take revenge on them and with massive shock, harmony stabs norma once and she's starting to die. Still possesed, badyah holds her back as she loses consciousness and begins to float with a ghostish aura around her body.

A most peculiar thing happens as we end episode 8. As soon as norma was killed, Lloyd began building a massive amount of pink fushia energy and laughing maniacally as he references the eleventh doctor's iconic trap speech. He releases it, sending barney and everyone nearby flying before he blasts off towards the house.

Episode 9 opens up with the fallout of the blast. Badyah hits her head but is freed from control. Barney is with logs, with Lloyd entering the house's large window with force, breaking it. Oddfellow is furious as he commands harmony to grab them whilst he tries to take norma's soul. Barney sees the spirit of Hugo as in the house, Audrey's trying to contact Hugo. Since 2010, she's spent a decade falling into the mystic arts and spiritology. He then gets an idea...

Harmony's hunting barney and logs whilst barney's certain he's hearing pugsley again, which causes them to try fighting back, to no avail.

Meanwhile, oddfellow notes Norma's soul is resisting him. He precedes to yell at harmony to find Lloyd as he believes he knows the location of his cane of souls.

Lloyd's idea is risky. It involves Audrey astral projecting and Lloyd channelling senergy as a weapon. He hides Audrey in a side extension before he flies back to the centre as everything's about to go down. As everyone gathers, oddfellow makes his demands clear: the location of his cane, or everyone dies. For once, barney leads a counter, saying his power is if they sell or willingly give it to him and with norma, he's broke his own rules already: he's in no position to make demands. Harmony grabs logs and threatens barney that he'll kill him if he doesn't retract being the lead negotiator. He agrees, and logs is thrown into barney, and Lloyd takes centre stage. He offers oddfellow one chance to back away, to which he says Norma's not cooperating, so Audrey weighs an option. Hugo sees her as she says that the choker she's wearing only activates on death, but she's not fully dead because of the vampire blood addition. He knows Audrey's going to do something stupid, and she says she's been lost without her friend by her side, and Norma and barney are a lot like them. Audrey talks to Norma's soul, saying she'll be okay as she sacrifices her ghost form to revive norma and activate bonapart's choker. The wound clears, and the choker activates, bringing her fully back, causing panic as harmony charges at Patrick, and barney takes the blow. Lloyd says the plan can't work without a spirit's energy, so Hugo decides to give his, and he accepts as norma gets back on her feet, asking Lloyd what she needs to do. As Hugo gives his energy, the pair conjure a senergy beam and aim it towards oddfellow who takes it head on. The force tumbles harmony, and everyone else. Oddfellows hat is gone, and his forehead now bears his own symbol as they say that his pursuit of immortality will follow him, but he knows the location of the cane by accepting his fate. Pissed, oddfellow precedes to take Harmony's soul before leaving, whistling his tune. Norma now actually looks different, like claire (corrupted timeline ep12), and Barborah asks for the event to be cancelled as badyah comes around, but norma doesn't want a hug from her anymore. Audrey's spiritless body sits in an astral state, in an isolated area. Somewhere, Audrey and Hugo embrace each other.

At morning, Lloyd leaves as he's going to discworld with the visitor, but he'll be at the charity event. Badyah tries explaining things, but norma just lashes out at her, as if she genuinely believes the betrayal was really her. Barney helps console badyah. It's like a whole new Norma's appeared...

Marcella arrives shortly after, checking for problems shocked that Pugsley's back...

The Not-So-Secret Secret Society of Dumfries

Visitors often ask about the origin of our town’s name noting it seems odd until we discuss our connections to Scotland. However, the name of the town was not the only odd feature of our community – the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) instituted a Grand Lodge on 02/22/1901, membership attracting people throughout NOVA and from Quantico. So, what is an odd fellow?

The American Independent Order of Odd Fellows trace their origins to the Seven Stars Tavern in Baltimore and credit Thomas Wildey and his affiliation with the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity. These early unincorporated lodges generally modeled the European Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, but never incorporated, objecting to black member chapters. Peter Ogden secured membership with the English Grand United Order of Odd Fellows and promoted affiliation with them as the English welcomed men of any color. The official affiliated group opened the Philomathean Lodge and eventually the Hamilton Lodge in New York as membership grew and the Order expanded. In Virginia, Alexandria hosted the Odd Fellows Hall built by George Seaton, funding provided partly through the Freedman’s Bureau, providing a place for community and social events, particularly crucial during the Jim Crow era. While the official organization continued to affiliate with their international family, the American Independent Order also expanded although membership declined during the Civil War. Industrialization and the need for social and worker reforms revived the order and by the 1930s, you could find a lodge in every state. We should note that the IOOF formed a branch known as the “Daughters of Rebekah”, which evolved to “The Rebekahs”, originally for females only, founded in September 1851. The Grand United Order of Odd Fellows established the “Household of Ruth” – a separate organization for women, forming around 1857.

The current purpose of the organization is to “visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead, and educate the orphan,” with a mission to “improve and elevate the character of mankind.” In order to do this, the organization committed itself to promoting principles such as friendship and truth, aiding each other and those less fortunate in their communities, and promoting “good will and harmony through principle of universal fraternity, all men and women regardless of race, nationality, religion, social order, gender, rank, and station are brothers and sisters”. The name’s origins are still unclear. Two theories noted by the IOOF reflect the character and jobs of the members. Was it odd to be so dedicated to assisting the community in the 1700s? Or perhaps the early members worked many “odd jobs”? We will not even attempt to answer this question as it would mean determining everything from societal perceptions to expressions (example: when did the phrase “odd jobs” even become a thing and does it mean something different today?)

Based on interviews with Dumfries Lodge Members, such as James Williams, the Dumfries order sponsored square dances and dinners with proceeds supporting orphanages and elderly assisted living facilities. Williams noted, “Today [1971] if someone is sick or injured he is taken by the rescue squad to the hospital, but in the old days the nearest doctor was in Occoquan and someone had to ride a horse there to get him. Members would take turns staying up throughout the night with the sick and doing chores for him. Sometimes they would get together and cut the corn or do the haying for him.”

The original R.E. Lee Lodge burned in the 1927 Dumfries blaze (spoilers if you have not read that blog…), but the members, including many marines, decided to rebuild. In 1990, William F. Keys, one of the three original Odd Fellows still alive stated, “…so when the building was layed off the ground was found to be of pretty nice white sand and as there was no back hoes and heavy equipment picks shovels and wheel barrows were put to use and Will Gallahan was hired to make the cement blocks from the sand out of the basement…all of the cement blocks were made on the lot”. He recalled the building’s need for a sewer line and septic field, with members purchasing the cement blocks for $1.00 to help raise funds. He concluded, “Another way of raising money was by Square Dances but that put such a strain on the building by the swaying of the dancers that it had to be stopped and a wooden floor laid in the basement and a second entrance and exit made to the basement…”

In August of 1990, HDVI and the Town of Dumfries contacted the Virginia Department of Historic Resources regarding placing the Dumfries Odd Fellows Lodge Hall Building on the National and Virginia Register. While ultimately the initiative failed, this unique and eclectic building remains standing in Dumfries on Main Street. One almost wonders if you could still hear pounding feet and laughter as the wooden floor and walls are witness to a very odd time in Dumfries history.

“Better Leave Soon” is the last song off the new Ocean Party LP “The Oddfellows’ Hall” on Spunk (AUS) and Emotional Response (US).  I chose this song to mark the untimely passing of Zac Denton, one of six members of The Ocean Party.  Zac was only 24, yet he’s been a part of over 10 releases (Ciggie Witch and Pregnancy have been posted here in the past).  He had a migraine, and was admitted to the hospital last Sunday.  Doctors found a cyst that was not allowing his brain to drain properly, but by then the swelling in the brain was too much.

Zac leaves an abundance of music to remember him by, but he also leaves a gaping hole by his absence.  One of his bandmates was his brother Lachlan.  I know they all miss him.

“Better Leave Soon” is now a bittersweet title, but the last 3 minutes are such a nice beautiful send off.
