Okay apologies for hopping on tag trending train but I have an important request.

If you don't know about the history of Aboriginal genocide in Australia, watch this program.

It's a very very hard watch but one that is important.

If you're outside of Australia, make sure to set your VPN to Aus. You may also need to set an acount for SBS but it's free viewing.

I would also recomend most of SBS's docos through NITV, as they're the National Indigenous broadcast station.

A little update on the warnings before I forget. I'm a little pressed for time so this is from my DM's with someone I've shared with.

I just wanted to give a heads up that the show contains footage of a mourning ceremony (with the grievers's permission from what I remember). There is also a segment where stolen remains are returned to their families but there is no appearence of the remains themselves on screen. From what I can tell/remember these scenes are treated with care and gravitas but I don't think I can be the one to say whether they were treated appropriately. Anything on colonialism is a hard watch, but this doco particularly follows on the unglamourised brutality of the frontier wars as well the lack of recognition on the wars from the Australian government/military and from the wider Australian public. That's on me for not disclosing that properly in the post.

Just finished watching a documentary, (Tricky Dick & the Man in Black), where Richard Nixon invited Johnny Cash to play country music in front of a party of conservative politicians at the White House. Johnny Cash was an icon for rebelling youth, but was also fiercely patriotic, famously "apolitical" and believed the US could do no wrong. He penned a new song, rolled up on cue to the stage and sang:

' A little boy of three sittin' on the floor Looks up and says, "Daddy, what is war?" "Son, that's when people fight and die" The little boy of three says "Daddy, why?" Nixon bombed Cambodia two weeks later. At a hearing for one of the witnesses for Watergate, Johnny met up with one of the politicians that was at the performance. The politician apologised for not listening.

7/04/2023 - RHYAH, a short documentary

"It can be frustrating at times to know that people kind of judge you based off your gender and that you're a female rather than just your hockey abilities but I think if you just kind of like, put that to the back of your mind and just go out and play, then I guess you can prove them wrong. I definitely know in the back of my mind there has been like, a limit in the ceiling that female athletes can reach, but hopefully that'll change in the near future."

7/10/2024 - Stewart continues to smash barriers

When the Steamers signed Stewart in late August, the team already knew what the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women's World Championship bronze medalist was capable of. Having also scouted her at tournaments like the Monctonian last fall and Ice Jam this past January, they saw something special in her. “Rhyah is a smaller-sized goalie, but she reads the play so well,” said Steamers GM and head coach Olivier Filion. “She's so athletic and quick that her size doesn’t matter. She's a gamer. She wants to go out there and prove to people that she belongs there. She wants to get better every day. How quick she is and how much she battles makes her a good goalie in our league.” Stewart is only the second female goalie to play in league history.
